ER omslag Nr. 0018 T he Snows of Kilimanjaro and Other Stories Ernest Hemingway CONTEMPORARY C This volume contains three of Hemingway’s early short stories. THE SNOWS OF KILIMANJARO relates the story of a rootless expatriate, Harry, who is awaiting death in a safari camp at the foot of the snow-capped Kilimanjaro. Harry, who is honest to his own standards, sincere and courageous, is looking back upon his life: the violent experiences in World War I in Austria and Italy and the horrors of the Greco- Turkish war. In SOLDIER’s HOME Hemingway describes the estrange- ment from society of a young American soldier and in MY OLD MAN he tells the story of a warm and affectionate relationship between father and son, travelling in Europe from one race course to the other. Hemingway’s style is tough, simple and colloquial, full of understatements, revealing tenderness of feeling underneath descriptions of brutality.
