    Roxy, May 16th!

    By: Zak St. John

For a good part of my life,I listened to a narrow spec-trum of music. I really likedhow it made me feel andhow fun it was to playalong with on the drums.

Sitting in my room on mykit, I would learn Zeppelinand other classic rock songsverbatim. Every fill, changeor stop would be perfect. And dont get me wrong, Iowe a lot to the approachJohn Bonham made on thekit. He incorporated everystyle of music into his parts.Jazz, big band, blues, rock,

    R&B andcountry.

T h e nduring the 90s, Nirvanahit, along with othergrunge type bands and I just didnt dig it. It mademe not listen to anything

lumped into the newMTV category of mu-sic. Oh, and dont get mestarted on how much Idisliked rap.

Luckily for me, goingto college and then mov-ing to L.A., opened myeyes to artists I had nevereven heard of. I met and

had the opportu-nity to talk with other peo- ple who had different in-fluences than me and I

touched every audibletemptation I could. Alsomeeting successful drum-mers who really under-stood the make up of asong and how the flow of amusical arrangement reallyworks, guided me to anu n d e r s t an d i n g ev engreater.

    I stumbledupon a small

    pilbchq walk-ing downSunset blvd

    last week.

    It hadfour teeth leftwith long

green eyes that stuttered as the lightfrom the buildings glistened. Iknew about cops being taller thanmost doors, so I figured I'd take mychances. The balloons were filled

with delight as I suppled my

Chrolchq over my head to get a bet-ter view. It was hot and spicy with-

out any clounchq prepared. Thessoochq figured I was disabled be-cause of my long brow that flutteredin the wind. This would soon allowme to fuggle anyone's blork down

    past San Vicente blvd.

Being a musician, I have defi-nitely noticed that people who havePPD NEVER stop cooking thesame meal at the same time thegrass upstairs dies. In conclusion, Iwill never allow Jose and Rhonda to

finish my seared ahi tuna without

bringing over a glass of Pino

    Noir to share.

This aptitudes a tangible fore-closure of the toughest kind. Itold them over and over again thatonce the fish dies in the pond, you never get a better chance atredirecting your healthcare bene-

    fits with AETNA.

All in all, it takes three toscrew in a light bulb, one to holdthe bulb, one to call the vet, andtwo to make sure that the tire

    doesn't hit the curb!

Listen to it All (Continued from page one)Most musicians DONT listen to

music out of their personal box.Sure, they hear it on the radio, butdo they sit down and play thesongs; learn the musicality or

appreciate the hours of thought putinto a Dr. Dre, KISS or Prodigysong? NO. My challenge to you:Go to ITunes and download a songfrom your least favorite artist. Then

learn it!! FYI, the SmashingPumpkins was one of the many bands from whom I learned thislesson.

    As humanbeings in the 21st

century, onething many of ustend to overlookis our health. Itsan easy thing toforget about, especially if, likeme, youre rela-

tively young and can get awaywith the neglect. Or if, like most, your schedule is so busy you barely have time to pay attentionto what goes in your mouth (stopthinking dirty, you perverts!) Re-cently, I was hanging out at Omarand Sturbas house. At one pointin the evening, Omar went to thekitchen to eat some salad, and heoffered me some. No thanksman I replied, as my stomach wasstill trying to process the Taco Bellcheese quesadillas I had eaten anhour before. A short time later,Sturba was cutting up a canta-

loupe, and he offered me some.Well, I replied in embarrassment,

it has been a few days since Iveeaten any fruit. He handed mesome of the orange earth candy andI dove in. Its good, isnt it?Sturba asked me with a grin. As aresult, my mouth, stomach, and in-testines were quite pleased with thissatisfying snack. With this in mind,I feel the urge to share with you abit of knowledge I try to keep in theforefront of my mind on a dailybasis: the following list of 8 foods

    you should eat every day.

Spinach (high in iron, enhancessex, muscle growth, helps build

    bones, heart healthy)

Yogurt (immunity booster, fightscancer, helps build bones; makesure label says live and active

    cultures)

    Tomatoes (immunity booster,

    fights cancer, heart healthy)

    Carrots (immunity booster, fights

The monthly cheese By: Seth Romanocancer, eyesight enhancer)

    Blueberries (stimulates the brain,

    immunity booster, fights cancer,heart healthy)

    Beans (muscle growth/high protein,

    stimulates the brain, heart healthy)

Walnuts or Almonds (musclegrowth/high protein, immunitybooster, fights cancer, heart healthy,

    stimulates the brain)

    Oats or Flaxseed (heart healthy,

    muscle growth, stimulates the brain)

How can I eat all 8 foods in oneday? you ask. Well, its simple, really. For breakfast, eat granola(oats) with yogurt and blueberries allmixed together. For lunch or dinner, make yourself a salad using freshspinach instead of lettuce, and addtomatoes, carrots, black beans, andalmonds. You will feel better physi-cally, mentally, and know that in theprocess, youll have a longer, health-

    ier, and happier life.

Last years SunsetStrip Music Festivalwas amazing! TheStrip overflowedwith people and thestages were gracedby local and nationalacts alike. I couldnthelp but reminisceabout the hey-day of

live music in LA. Locals often talkabout The Troubadour in the early70s, where The Eagles were weeklyregulars; and of course, the friend-ship and rivalry between MotleyCrue and Guns N Roses in the mid-80s. What happened to Holly-woods glory days when thousandsof people filtered The Strip on aweekly basis just to get a glimpse oftheir favorite local bands?

    What Happened to Live Music?

    [email protected]

The Shrill BandMany factors come to mind. The

immense focus placed on modern technol-ogy often distracts people from activitiesoutside the home. Besides this sedentarytendency, our societys fixation withself has helped spread the idea that eve-ryone can be a star. One has to look nofurther than the surge of performance- based reality shows and karaoke bars towitness this trend. Last but not least, some blame has to be placed on actual bands. Nirvana, despite their great song-writing and true emotion, implanted theidea that anyone who plays 3 chords canbe in a band. The result has been an on-slaught of subpar bands that largely drive people away. I only hope that todaysSunset Strip bands can usher in a new eraand help refocus peoples attention on livemusic.
