Hey Division 11/18c!

I am extremely excited to be your

Lieutenant Governor for the 2014-2015 year. I am a

grade eleven student at Abbotsford Senior

Secondary School. I served as Club President last

year which was when I developed my love for Key

Club. I enjoy playing video games, rugby and

football. Serving is my passion because I truly

believe that if one of my actions can make

someone’s day better or even make them smile, it

was worthwhile.

I am looking forward to meeting each of you

during the course of this year. I hope to see you all

at the DCMs and Canada Rally (more information

to come). I am so lucky to be a part of such an

outgoing and enthusiastic division. The passion for

service I see in your eyes continues to inspire me.

I hope I will be able to serve you all well this year. If

you ever need to express concern, discuss ideas or

just talk about Key Club, do not hesitate to

contact me.

My first month as Lieutenant Governor has been

extraordinary and I feel extremely lucky to be a

part of such a dedicated and hard-working

division

In Caring and Service,

Can MNT be stopped?

Yes! MNT is highly preventable. Just three doses of

a 60-cent immunization protect mothers, who

then pass on the immunity to their future babies.

Together, Kiwanis and UNICEF can stop this

disease.

This year’s District Project is….ELIMINATING MNT!

What is MNT?

In 30 countries around the world, maternal and

neonatal tetanus (MNT) can quickly turn the joy

of childbirth into tragedy. MNT kills one baby

every nine minutes. Its effects are excruciating —

tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions

and extreme sensitivity to light and touch. There is

little hope of survival. And tetanus kills mothers

too.

Who suffers from MNT?

MNT is caused when tetanus spores, found in soil

everywhere, come into contact with open cuts

during childbirth. The disease strikes the poorest of

the poor, the geographically hard to reach and

those without health care.

Why hasn't MNT been eliminated

already?

UNICEF has helped to successfully eliminate MNT

in many countries. But in 30 countries in Africa,

Asia, Europe and North America, it still strikes

babies and mothers who have little or no access

to health care — either because they are poor,

live in remote areas or are caught in

humanitarian emergencies. More funds and

resources are needed to reach all babies and

mothers at risk.

Daffodil Fundraiser This month, the Bateman Key

Club spearheaded a fundraiser

in which they, with the help of

the entire division sold daffodils

around the community for

KCCP. Over the duration of the

fundraiser, $3800 was raised for

KCCP! Well done Bateman Key

Club and all other members

that helped!

Structure

Individual Key Clubs belong to divisions, which belong to

districts, which comprise Key Club International.

Districts

There are 33 organized districts. Each district, normally defined

by state or nation, tends to match a similar Kiwanis district and is

led by a governor, who is elected by delegates at the annual

district convention.

Divisions

Districts are divided into divisions and each division has a

lieutenant governor, a student leader who carries out the

district’s policies and provides support to the clubs.

Clubs

Key Clubs are established in a high school or equivalent

institution. A community-based club also may be chartered.

Elected officers can include president, one or more vice

presidents, secretary, treasurer, editor and one director from

each class.

Presidents’ Reports

Abby Senior

So far at Abby, we have been busy planning the school wide event

30 Hour Famine! The event is happening on May 23rd and we are so

excited to unite as a school to bring awareness for the cause! All the

money we raise will go towards the Free the Children Adopt a Village

program. We are planning to go to We day through Free the Children

next year as a club! Our club has also made bows and we are selling

them for $3 to students and teachers to support the Adopt a Village

program. We are planning to take the bows door to door to sell

them! We are planning an event for June to bring awareness about Key

Club and K.C.C.P. , most likely “Key Club Candy Grams”. A really neat

idea which a member in our club came up with!

Maegan Mckay

Solh

This past month Solh Key Club of G.W. Graham organized the finalities of

the 30 hour famine and coffee house events. The coffee house function

has been moved to May 22nd during lunch in order to have a better

turnout and maximize donations for the Rice Raiser charity. There will be

a bake sale and entertainment provided by students during the event.

The 30 hour famine will be overnight May 9th-10th if we have enough

participants. All participants are required to pay a $20 donation going

towards the Eliminate project. The event is from 5pm Friday to 10am

Saturday. We will be putting on a variety of activities, including a movie

and “The Amazing Race” scavenger hunt, as well as a pancake

breakfast in the morning. The new executives have now been fully

integrated! The outgoing executives are assisting us in learning our new

positions and are demonstrating excellent mentorship.

Bateman

“Hey Key Clubbers! How do you feel?” Hi everyone, for those of you that

don’t know me, my name is Anthony Miyagi and I’ll be taking Yujin Song’s

place as RBSS Key Club President for the 2014/2015 year! I am looking

forward to working with my executive team.

April has been an incredible month for our club! Both DCON and Key

Leader were great experiences for our club members and there has been a

noticeable increase in our club pride and spirit! Immediately after DCON,

our executive team went hard to work organizing our first project for our

term. It was a huge success with over half of our club members

participating! For the door-to-door fundraiser, close to 35 Key Clubbers

showed up from various clubs to help raise money for KCCP! Bateman Key

Club would like to thank Abby, Yale, ATSS members, as well the Kiwanis

advisors for helping us out! Together, we raised a grand total of $3821.50. For

every $3 raised, Kiwanis will donate an additional $1 towards the cause; this

will bring our total to over $5000! An estimated of 150-200 volunteer hours

were served during the fundraiser’s duration! Thanks everybody for your

support!

I would like to introduce you to our member of the month, Tina Lin for

outstanding service. For the Daffodil Fundraiser, Tina volunteered over 11

hours in one day as well as helped out at other events. Outstanding job!

Finally, I would to thank all the outgoing executives on behalf of Bateman

for their tremendous service to our club and community, as well as for being

such outstanding role models. Yujin and her team grew our club extensively

during her term; it is now our turn to carry on the torch! Bateman Key Club

will miss you all <3.

Yale

April was a very fun month for the Yale key clubbers! Our members volunteered at the

Walk for the Rice Reason, and despite the rainy weather, they happily cheered on

contestants. Additionally, several members attended the District Convention in Seattle

and Key Leader in Hope and gained multiple leadership skills and more knowledge

about Kiwanis. We also sold and delivered daffodil grams at our school to support KCCP.

Furthermore, a few of our active members participated in Anthony’s door to door

daffodil sale. Moreover, our vice president, Sung Il asked our members to write a letter of

encouragement to the surviving students from the ferry incident in South Korea. The ferry

sunk with hundreds of high school students, with still approximately 100 bodies remaining

in the ship. We are hoping that our prayers and letters will provide some support to these

surviving students. We additionally held our election and I am excited to introduce the

incoming executives: Jane Kim, Angela Li, Laura Egolf, Eugenia Long, Kourtnie Sohl, and

James Chooi. It has been an amazing year and journey as member and President, and I

hope our key club will continue to grow and serve our community!

Rachel Lee

Garabaldi

The Spring time for Garibaldi Key Club has been a very successful, and eventful one to

say the least! On May 1st, the club had a big dinner, where we celebrated the

induction of the new executive board, and honored those that moved on! The club

would also like to thank both Key Club and Kiwanis Lieutenant Governor’s, Ann Penner

and Pranav Arya for attending the dinner, and everyone else who came to celebrate

Key Club, and our new board. Furthermore, Garibaldi’s Key Club participated in a food

drive, working out of the Pitt Meadows food bank to raise more than thirty thousand

pounds of food. The same food bank also hosted an easter egg hunt that many Key

Clubbers and Kiwanis Members helped with. The most recent and largest of our events

was the Rebels for a Cause Water walk that was organized by Key Clubber and former

Editor, Sara Stanley. The event was a huge success, with a lot of fun and help from

many Key Clubbers, Rebels for a Cause members, and helpful students! The Key Club

has a lot planned for the remainder of the school year, and as of now are currently

helping the local Kiwanis Club with their hanging basket sales – which seems to be

going fantastically. Either way, with this being my last Presidents report, despite the fact

that I am no longer President, I Nick Nichols, want to thank all my dedicated members

for their loyalty to Key Club over the past year and a half; I would also like to thank The

Kiwanis Club of Golden Ears for all their help with everything Key Club. Thank you to

Ann Penner and Pranav Arya for being fantastic Lieutenant Governors.

I look forward to seeing the direction of Key Club at Garibaldi as I move on to

university, and I hope to see all of you Key Clubbers later on, as I hope to be an active

member of Circle K at UBC.

Thank you!

Nick Nichols
