MINIMUM WAGE HIKE PASSES ASSEMBLY On May 24, the Assembly passed A-2162 (Oliver/Greenwald/Spencer/Green/Johnson/Prieto/ Wisniewski) by a vote of 46-33-0 after two hours of debate on the bill. The bill increases the minimum wage from $7.25 to $8.50 per hour starting July 1, 2012, with future annual increases tied to the Consumer Price Index starting in 2013. Every Republican voted against the bill, and every Democrat voted for the bill, except for District 1 Assemblyman Matthew Milam. We extend our gratitude to Assemblyman Milam for supporting the business community on this very important

Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver said that she did not believe that businesses would shut down overnight or would flee the state because of the minimum wage increase. “This is economic stimulus and a recognition that thousands of households in New Jersey are struggling to subsist on minimum wage jobs that do not allow them to support their families,” Speaker Oliver stated. Republicans argued that the increase would hurt the economic recovery. The Chamber has been working since January to oppose this bill, including testifying before both the Assembly and Senate Labor

Committees and joining a coalition of business organizations that presented a united front against the increase. Click here to view the desk letter sent by business groups to members of the Assembly. The Chamber also formed a focus group comprised of Chamber members most impacted by a minimum wage increase. The focus group consisted of a supermarket, restaurant, manufacturing, service and retail businesses. Members of the focus group met with Majority Leader Greenwald and Senate President Sweeney to outline their concerns and how the minimum wage increase will impact their business. It was clear that the increased labor cost, in addition

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE CONT’D FROM PG. 2. to the other high costs of doing business in our state, will make the state less attractive to businesses looking to locate or expand. Further, increasing the minimum wage will not create jobs, which the state so desperately needs; rather, it will result in fewer hours and less jobs. The Chamber also shared with the legislative leaders that, in a survey of our members, the number one reason identified for opposing a minimum wage increase was the impact on the cost to the customer. The focus group members agreed that an increase in labor costs will force them to pass on the increase to customers, making them less competitive. They also confirmed that wages of other employees now paid above the minimum wage would also have to be increased. The State Senate will likely take up the minimum wage increase in the coming weeks.
