What do you think?
1. Breathing and respiration are the same.
Breathing is the movement of air in and out of the lungs. Cellular respiration is a series of reactions that converts energy in food molecules to usable energy for cells.
2. Lungs are the only part of the body that use oxygen.
All cells throughout the body need oxygen.
PARTS OF THE RESPIRATORY
SYSTEM
1. Pharynx: a tube-like passageway at the top of the throat that receives air, food, and
liquids from the mouth or nose.
2. Epiglottis: a flap of tissue at the lower end of the pharynx that keeps food and liquid
from entering the rest of the respiratory system.
3. Larynx: triangle-shaped area connected to the pharynx; voice box
4. Trachea: tube connected to the larynx and held open by C-shaped rings of cartilage
5. Bronchi: two tubes that branch off of the trachea and lead to the lungs
6. Lungs: main organs of the respiratory system
7. Alveoli: microscopic sacs within the lungs where gas exchange occurs
8. Diaphragm: large muscle below the lungs that contracts and relaxes as you breathe
Cilia: short, hair-like structures that can move a cell or move molecules away from a cell.
