Continuation from page 1 (Iran)

In the year 2002 it turned out that Iran had m a i n t a i n e d n u c l e a r reactors of which the IAEA (Internat ional Atomic Energy Agency) was not informed about. In March 2004 the IAEA asked Iran to publish all t h e i r p l a n s f o r t h e nuclear program. The I r a n d i d n o t a c c o m m o d a t e t h e request in the following time.

W h e n P r e s i d e n t M a h m u d A h m a d i -nedschad was elected in 2005 the Iranian nuclear politics changed again. Ahmadinedschad fired a lot of high officials and rep laced them wi th people having the same attitude as he did. In D e c e m b e r 2 0 0 5 h e p a s s e d a l a w t h a t allowed him to stop international inspections at every time.

T h a t w a s w h e n t h e conflict started. The Iran wanted the US to cancel the contract from 1968. It accused the US that

their aim would be to e n s u r e t h e I s r a e l i nuclear monopoly in the Mid-East. When Israel admitted to own nuclear bombs the situation got worse because they had joined the IAEA but d i d n ’ t s i g n t h e international contract.

The Iran had always asserted that it was not t h e i r a i m t o b u i l d nuclear bombs. They w o u l d j u s t w a n t t o increase the program because they didn’t want to run out of electricity in case of an oil-lack. Especially the US was s t r i c t l y a g a i n s t t h e Iranian plans. They said there was enough oil in the country and they should focus on that.

The most important reason that nobody w a n t s I r a n t o o w n nuclear technology is that it would totally c h a n g e t h e p o w e r conditions in the Mid-East. Also the Iran has s o m e v e r y f u n d a m e n t a l i s t s t r u c t u r e s a n d t h e government cooperates o w i t h m i l i t a n t

organizations such as t h e H e z b o l l a h i n Teheran. Ironically states that are included in the contract, which Iran is, usually have the right to get help from other states who are included in the contract for enriching uranium. Iran uses this a s a n o t h e r f o r m o f pressure.

In 2006 the conflict reached its climax when t h e I r a n o p e n e d u r a n i u m - p i t s a g a i n which were sealed by the IAEA before. At that point, the UN-Security Council threatened to cancel all negotiations1 w i t h t h e I r a n . T h e negotiations had reached a “dead point”. France and other countr ies didn’t want to continue the negotiations unless Iran totally stopped their nuclear program.

S i n c e t h e n t h e negotiations went very badly. No Party wanted to give in at any point and so the situation didn’t really change in the last four years. According to CIA Chief Leon Panetta it got even worse in the last few years. He says that the CIA has got information that Iran would right now be able to build at least two atom bombs. He warns not to forget the problem there and to work hard on finding a solution.

South Africa, also called the Rainbow Nation, is a country with a lot of different sides. On one hand, there is this amazing nature, the big variety of animals and the beautiful land coasts. On the other hand the country still has to deal with problems like HIV, poverty and their dark political past, the Apartheid.

For tourists the country has to offer a lot of interesting places to visit. The most important and famous attraction are the national parks with their stunning nature and the famous animals like lions, z e b r a s , e l e p h a n t s , buffalos, giraffes, leopards and rhinoceroses. People can go on safari tours to make photos. Hunting is not allowed anymore since most of the animals living there are threatened by extinction. But for most people living in South Africa life is not as easy as for all the tourists. A lot of people still suffer under their p o l i t i c a l p a s t , t h e a p a r t h e i d s y s t e m (1948-1994). Since 1652, when the Dutch settled in South Africa, it has always

b e e n g o v e r n e d b y Europeans (first Dutch s e t t l e r s t h a n B r i t i s h colonists). They oppressed the black Africans over a long time. The apartheid has been the hardest time f o r t h e m . T h e w h i t e minority oppressed the black majority with acts which made the Black move out of the cities and into townships (almost no hot water or electricity), made them carry their passports with them all the time, made them live in completely separated places and parted them in different ethnic groups, white, coloured, native and Indian.

In 1942 Nelson Mandela stood up for the rights of the Black and fought against apartheid. 1994 he has been elected first black President of South Africa and the apartheid ended. Nelson Mandela is still fighting for human rights and also against HIV,

which is really far spread in South Africa.T o d a y , t h e W h i t e s apologised for doing cruel things, but the Blacks cannot forget that fast. They are still trying to deal with their past and trying to reconcile with the Whites. Other problems are the huge level of poverty and high crime rate in big cities like J o h a n n e s b u r g a n d Pretoria (the capital). Despite all these issues South Africa is one of the most developed countries. T h e i r e c o n o m y i s developing really fast and they are step by step catching up with the global economy system. South Africa is currently hosting the soccer World C u p . T h i s e v e n t i s important for the economy as well as for the people. The people who gave South Africa the chance to host the soccer World Cup did so in the hope that the event would help nation-b u i l d i n g a n d reconciliation.

Kurdistan – A Country Which is not a Country?Kurdistan is a region in Asia as big as France. But it’s wrong to call it a real state. The Kurdish people have an own culture and an own language, but they don’t have their official country. Parts of Kurdistan are in Turkey, Iraq, Iran and Syria. These countries want to keep their land. They want to settle some of their people there. But there is another thing which is important. In Kurdistan there is a lot of o i l . A n d t h a t ‘ s w h y e v e r y o n e w a n t s t h e i r country.

The Kurdish flag

They don’t get help from other countries and are very poor. The nationalistic people in Kurdistan try to get their own country. They were fighting for that, but without much success. There are much weapon conflicts with the other countries. One of the depressors was called Saddam Hussein.

He even attacked Kurdish people with poisoned gas. After his death, the Kurdish people began to create parties which are similar to the European ones. They also fight back the Iraqis now. T h e y a l s o h a d problems with Turkey. But now the Turkey wants to join the EU, and so they gave the Kurdish people some rights like an own Television channel and schools. In our opinion the Kurdish people are a people with many problems, and they should get more help from outside.By Jan Schäfer, Raphael Börger

The main character Slevin has a really bad day. His girlfriend has left him, on the way to his friend Nick he got robbed and when he finally arrives, Nick isn’t there and seems to have disappeared. But then things get even worse, when two guys arrive and take him to “The Boss”. His friend Nick Fisher has big debts1 there and The Boss wants him to repay them. But The Boss has mistaken Slevin for Nick, and Slevin can’t prove that he isn’t his friend. As an alternative to payment, he offers Slevin the option of murdering the son of his rival, “The Rabbi”. When Slevin finally arrives back at the house of his friend, it only takes a few minutes until the next guys arrive, but this time they take him to The Rabbi. Apparently his friend Nick has got even bigger debts there and, just like The Boss did, The Rabbi thinks he is his friend Nick Fisher and wants his money back. Because of this mistaken identity, Slevin now finds himself in the middle of a war being plotted by the two biggest and most rival crime bosses of the city. He now has to hatch2 his own clever plan to get them before they get him. But it is never clear who is on which side.

The things which make the movie so great are the little twists in the story, which make the movie unpredictable and exciting.

The film starts without any introduction, and you’re directly thrown into the story. At the beginning there are many unanswered questions, but throughout the film you (think to) slowly understand the plot3...wouldn’t there be the big twist in the end. The ending is really amazing. It is unexpected, but it fits perfectly and is the big surprise of the film. The dialogs are entertaining and extraordinarily well acted. But this is to be expected, because of the great cast. There are many world class actors playing, such as Morgan Freeman. Especially Josh Hartnett, the main character, fits perfectly into his role and gives the movie a special touch.

We think it’s a great movie for anyone who likes action films or who likes movies with an unpredictable ending. In some way the movie is funny, but it is still thrilling and gripping. ____________1: debts- when you owe somebody money, 2: hatch- to think of something/ to make up a plan,3: plot- the main things which happen in a film/book

The beginning of the game is in the year 2012. You’re Desmond Miles who was abducted by the company “Abstergo Industries”. They practice ancestry research and searching for rare relicts. Abstergo Industries uses a m a c h i n e w h i c h i s c a l l e d “Animus”. It puts yourself into the position of your ancestor. Desmond Miles is the descendant of the famous assassin Altair. Now the main story of the game begins. You’re Altair in the year 1191 AD and you have to fight against the people who promote the third crusade1. Before the story starts, Altair has lost all his weapons because he had failed to finish a job. You have to get them back while achieving your missions. It is your job to assassin nine people in three different cities. Before you can assassin somebody, there’re lots of things to prepare. You have to observe people, to

In the game you visit the cities A k k o n , D a m a s k u s a n d Jerusalem. These cities really exist and Ubisoft did lots of researches to make these cities as real ist ic as possible. They designed 200 different people from every class of population and a very big and exact map, in- and outside of the cities.

The story is very well conceived. It is not a typical role play, but an interesting adventure through the history of the third crusade. In this game the player has a lot of liberties. There’s a main story line which you have to follow, but you’re not supposed to follow it step by step. Often you can choose what to do and in which order you want to do it. But if you have to assassin somebody, it’s always in the same order: prepare yourself, kill, run away. The whole world of the game is completely free. You can climb on every building, visit every street and ride to every place. The control is made for diverse actions, but is not too difficult.

Theatre group of local school enchants audience with interpretation of Duerrenmatt’s classic “Der Besuch der alten Dame” ( => The old lady’s visit)

This Friday, the 25th and Saturday, the 26th of June, the theatre group of the KGN performed “Der Besuch der alten Dame”, a play of Friedrich Duerrenmatt’s.

The famous play is about Claire Zachanassian (Kathrin Sichler) who visits her small hometown of Guellen and forces the audience as well as the residents to face guilt and regret, bitterness and revenge, dishonesty and corruption.

Guellen is economically running on empty1 and hopes for financial support by Claire, who left Guellen 45 years ago and became a billionaire2 since then. When she arrives in the town, people have to notice that nothing about the old lady still reminds of the young Klaeri Waescher that they used to know. She has become exalted, emotionless and cunning. Although she offers Guellen her economical help, one billion, she connects her support with a horrible condition. The residents only get the money, if one of them kills Alfred Ill (Felix Gerbig), her former lover, who once refused to admit being her child’s father and labeled her a whore3 to prove that everyone could be the father. Even though the habitants of Guellen reject her offer, everyone in the town starts spending more money, buying more expensive tobacco, whiskey, food, new shoes and so on, everything on credit. Everyone is expecting someone else to fulfill the lady’s condition and thus expecting her money. People more and more blame Ill for all the trouble, even expect him to “do the job” for them and to commit suicide. There is no mercy, no compassion4.

The background music has been composed and performed on the grand piano by Fabian Kummer, a KGN student.

Rehearsing since October, the theatre group practiced the famous play under the artistic direction of theatre educator Uwe Froehlich, who is head of the school’s theatre project since 2006/2007. As a result of their hard work and continuous improvement, the KGN’s theatre project has become famous in the whole region.

The theatre group consists of 16 students, most of them 10th and 11th graders. “Der Besuch der alten Dame” was the first finished piece they rehearsed, before, they always wrote own pieces in teamwork. Therefore it is obvious, that this year’s theatre project has been a totally new challenge and experience and has, according to public voices, made the participants grow and improve a lot.

Due to the great performance this weekend and the group’s growing popularity, people are looking forward to another two performances of “Der Besuch der alten Dame” this September and October.

Internet/ Media

A website where you can listen to your favourite music and discover new bands or artists at the same time – for free! The idea already exists with Last.fm, but the big difference is that Jango is completely free for everyone. The only thing required is a quick registration with your nickname and your e-mail address. After that, you can enter the name of an artist you want to hear in this moment, and Jango will save this “station” you created in that moment and will play music of that artist and similar music of other artists. If you have created a station, you will get a list of the artists Jango will play in your created playlist. But if you want, you can delete some of these artists if you don’t like them. That way, you discover new groups and new music so that Jango doesn’t get boring.

The website of course isn’t illegal, because it’s an internet radio. That means that you can’t download the songs you like from the web page; there are only links to other websites like the iTunes Store.

But Jango isn’t only a special internet radio, it also works as a social network, where you create a profile and add new friends of yours. Jango will make suggestions for you with users who listen to the same music as you do. If you have added them to your buddylist, you can listen to the playlists of your friends. Jango also includes other things like a shoutbox, the possibility of uploading photos, sending messages to other users or commenting on music.

Sometimes you will hear new bands of which you probably never heard of. That’s because there are many new bands that still aren’t that popular but show their music in Jango. When you have listened to such a track, you will have to choose whether you like this band or not. If you like the band, it’s a good support because like this, more users will get to know the new band.

In our opinion, Jango is a webpage which is worth testing. Listening to music couldn’t be easier. In combination with a social network it’s a good idea, so we think that every music fan who wants to get to know new bands should at least visit Jango.com.

As we can see, this World Cup is full of surprises. The last World Champion, Italy, had to leave after the Group Stage as well as the Vice-Champion France. Ghana is the only African team which is still present. And South America convinces the most with its fabulous players. But this World Cup, the referees are more discussed than the players. Are they too strict? A host of yellow and red cards have been distributed yet and probably there will be more following. The referees have also been criticised because of some big mistakes, for example the goal in the game England – Germany that wasn’t accepted or the obvious off-side goal that was counted in the game Argentina-Mexico. We’ll see how the World Championship continues. There’s only one thing we can be sure about: It is and it will remain a wonderful World Cup full of emotions and surprises.__________________1) a.e.t.: after extra time 2)PSO: penalty shoot-out

Sports/ Entertainment

Most of the students in the 10b think that Germany could win the World Championship but some of the 10th graders think a bit pessimistic about Germany as a winner. A big amount of 32% thinks that Argentina will win. Just 5% believe that the Spanish national team will hold the cup in their hands.

ZMF 8th -25th July 2010

A big festival with internationally and nationally known artists, parties and fun

ZMF-AreaFreiburg

It depends, from 5 € to 40 €

These are just the biggest events, but there are some little parties, too, which shouldn’t be forgotten. In Neuenburg there are the so called ‘Summer garden’ - events. There are bands from all around the region playing music for young and old. There you can eat, relax, chill or dance to the rhythms.

In July there are many wine festivals where viticulturists present there new wines. Good mood is “preprogrammed.“

If you need a cooling from the heat, just pick your swimming things, grab the hand of your best friends, go to a quarry pond and have fun. The best: It is for free!

But finally, there is no better thing, then sit together with your friends and do your own great party. How about having a nice barbecue? We wish you an unforgettable summer...
