The New Mel Brooks Musical Young Frankenstein, a new musical come-dy from the creative team of the 12-time Tony Award-winning smash TheProducers, opened on Broadway November 8th 2007 at the Hilton The-atre and began the national tour in September of 2009.
Young Frankenstein features a book by three-time Tony Award winnerMel Brooks and three-time Tony Award winner Thomas Meehan and mu-sic and lyrics by Brooks. Young Frankenstein is directed and choreo-graphed by five-time Tony Award winner Susan Stroman. Musical su-pervision is by Glen Kelly.
Young Frankenstein was named Best Broadway Musical of 2008 by theOuter Critics Circle Award and won five Broadway.com AudienceAwards, including Favorite New Broadway Musical.
Clive Barnes of the New York Post called Young Frankenstein, “theBroadway musical at its dizziest, glitziest and funniest” while Pat Collinsof MY 9 News declared Young Frankenstein “a monster hit.” JeffreyLyons of WNBC TV said “this riotously funny musical will knock youclear across 42nd Street” and Roger Friedman of Fox News called it sim-ply, “utter genius.”
Young Frankenstein played its pre-Broadway engagement at Seattle’sParamount Theatre during August and September of 2007.
Based on the Oscar-nominated smash hit 1974 film, Young Frankensteinis the wickedly inspired re-imagining of the Mary Shelley classic from thecomic genius of Mel Brooks. When Frederick Frankenstein, an esteemedNew York brain surgeon and professor, inherits a castle and laboratory inTransylvania from his grandfather, deranged genius Victor Von Franken-stein, he faces a dilemma. Does he continue to run from his family’s tor-tured past or does he stay in Transylvania to carry on his grandfather’smad experiments reanimating the dead and, in the process, fall in lovewith his sexy lab assistant, Inga?
Unfolding in the forbidding Castle Frankenstein and the foggy moors ofTransylvania Heights, the show’s raucous score includes “The Transylva-nia Mania,” “He Vas My Boyfriend” and the unforgettable treatment ofIrving Berlin’s “Puttin’ On the Ritz.”
Released in 1974 to unani-mous critical acclaim, thefilm received two AcademyAward nominations, includ-ing one for Mel Brooks andGene Wilder’s script, alsonominated for a Writer’sGuild of America Award forBest Adapted Screenplay.Young Frankenstein was al-so the recipient of the twohighest honors accordedfilms of science fiction: win-ning The Hugo Award forBest Dramatic Presentationand The Nebula Award, given by The Science Fiction& Fantasy Writers of Ameri-ca, for Best Dramatic Writ-ing. Since its release, thefilm has become part of thenational consciousness: in2000, it was selected as #13on AFI’s 100 FunniestAmerican Movies of AllTime, and in 2003 Young Frankenstein was chosen for preservation in theLibrary of Congress National Film Registry.
The production team includes three Tony Award-winning designers ofThe Producers: three-time Tony Award-winning set designer Robin Wag-ner, five-time Tony Award-winning costume designer William Ivey Longand Tony Award-winning lighting designer Peter Kaczorowski. JonathanDeans is the sound designer. Two other Producers alumni complete themusic department: Tony Award-winning orchestrator Doug Bestermanand musical director Patrick Brady.
