Tim VanLandingham home: 229-377-4786 cell phone: 229-327-6733 email: [email protected] Dear Pavo Baptist Church Family and Friends: Have you wondered why Easter is on different dates each year? Sometime it is as early as March 22nd (which hasn’t happened since 1818 and not again until 2285), and as late as April 25 (which last happened in 1943 and won’t happen again until 2038). The date for Easter changes each year because the date is dependent on the Jewish Festival of Passover. According to Scripture, Passover is to be held on the first full moon following the vernal equinox. The Council of Nicaea in 325 AD set the precedent that Easter would be on the first full moon following the vernal equinox. When that occurred on a Sunday, Easter would be delayed another week. The word “Easter” comes from the Germanic word “Eostre” who was a goddess in Germanic paganism. The month of April was dedicated to feasts in remembrance of Eostre, but those had long died out by the 700’s AD. It was replaced by the “Paschal Month” which of course is the Christian celebration of the death, burial and resurrection of Christ. Without the death, burial and resurrection of Christ, there is no reason to celebrate anything! Without the Resurrection, there is no hope for anyone. The History Channel will be presenting, beginning Sunday, March 3rd, their production “The Bible”, one 2-hour episode which will center on Christ. In an interview with Diogo Morgado who plays Jesus, Morgado spoke of how emotional the crucifixion was and that it was the high point of the life of Christ and the Bible. Wow! How wrong he is. The Resurrection is the height point of Christ and of the Bible. On it hinges eternal life. I look forward to the Passion Week opportunities at PBC! Please sign up for the Passover Supper on that Thursday (drop-ins cannot happen), the Good Friday Service, Easter Sunrise at the ball field, Sunday School and Morning Worship, and the Quiet Lord’s Supper that Sunday night! We need to ponder Christ’s great gift. Remember what Jesus said: “ Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13). Thank you Jesus for dying for me, and for rising again. One final thought! We are thankful for those brave men and women who died on the battlefields of the world that this great land the Lord has given us might remain free. We celebrate those brave ones on the last Monday of May. They in part help us to under- stand what it means to give a life that others might live, while Jesus fully shows the depth of that great love. Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dis- mayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest. ” Joshua 1:9 MAY “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. ” John 15:13 P.O.
