Grade One

Literacy/ Soundwaves focus: This week in soundwaves we have been focusing on ’’ch” as in beach

and “sh” as in shark. In reading we have been learning about the meaning of words in different

contexts as our comprehension strategy.

Writing focus: This week the students have been working on completing their information reports

that they began last week. Some students have begun to write information reports about water,

using the knowledge we have learned as part of our integrated studies.

Maths focus: This week we have been revisiting our addition and subtraction knowledge and

skills. We have also revisited capacity this week with students determining how much different

containers hold.

Chinese: This week we practiced the language used for like/dislike and have/don’t have.

Students had to use this language to form sentences about themselves and tell another student

these sentences.

Integrated: This week we began our focus on water. Students completed their own investigation to

find out what water tasted, smelt, sounded, looked and felt like. They then had to write about

what they found.

Other things: The grade one’s had a fantastic time at their afternoon tea last Thursday.

Some children have some library books that are overdue. If you could please have a look to see if

they are at home that would be great.

Have a great weekend,

Miss Jones

Prep news!

Literacy/soundwaves focus: This week in Soundwaves we learnt about the sound ‘ir’ made with the

letters ‘ir’ and ‘ur’ in words such as ’bird’ and ’turn’. The second sound was ‘or’ made with the letters

‘or’ and ‘a’, in words such as ‘for’ and ‘all’. In literacy rotations students played Wahoo to revise the

‘ar’ sound, they also played a carpark sight word game and made silly sentences. We read the big

book “Meanies” and completed some writing about what the meanies did.

Writing: This week students began to record information for their animal report. Students used their

library books and the internet to find facts about their animal. The students were shown how to

safely use google to type in their specific animal name and access a website to collect facts from.

Maths: In maths this week we continued to develop our understanding of numbers to 20, ordering

them and writing them. Students have begun to write these numbers in word from also. We have

finished of our unit on statistics, making a graph on class data we collected.

Integrated studies: We have been discussing the seasons and the various weather we experience in

each season. We have also discussed what impact the weather has on our day to day lives, such as

clothing and activities we can do.

Next weeks news topic: Next week for news students are required to present two facts about their

chosen animal. This has been completed in class, however you can find further information if you

would like to do some additional research at home.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Mrs Hallyburton.

Grade 2 News

Another great working week was had. The children especially enjoyed writing about the Grade 2 Sleep over and having a visit by Rosie and Marley. Ask your child who Rosie and Marley are. A big thanks to Nerissa. Literacy/Soundwaves focus: This week our graphemes were ch and sh. Sh was tricky as it was made up of sh, ch, ti, and ci. We have also looked at alphabetical order and knowing that if two words start with the same letter we then need to look at the next letter in each word. Writing focus: This week we have reflected on our sleep over. We have learnt how to incorporate the 5 w’s into our paragraphs. Most of the children have written three paragraphs and then worked on their introduction and conclusion. We have started report writing and are currently learning how to write factual information. Reading: We are concentrating on word meaning in our texts. Maths focus: Revision of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division as well as graphing. Integrated Studies: Our water topic was started this week in our Literacy groups. We are learning tricky words such as precipitation, condensation, evaporation, vapour, condensation and essential. Have a great weekend relaxing. Cheers Mrs Lacanaria

Grade 3

Literacy: Our literacy rotations are in full swing. Reading focus was cause and effect. The students had fun playing Rags to Riches and won the million dollars on the game by correctly identifying the causes and effects of different scenarios. Students are making great progress with their reading with all students that have been assessed recently gaining 2 levels in their reading. Lit Circles have continued and students are becoming more familiar with the process and they are able to work independently and then sharing their work with their groups. Our writing theme has had us focus on writing a report about Australian animals. We have reinforced the need to have a topic sentence, detail sentences and an example sentence in each paragraph. Numeracy: We have finished off our vertical subtraction with a mnemonic device to help us remember the process of subtracting from a zero when completing vertical subtraction. We learnt that if you can’t subtract from the top because it is smaller, then we borrow from the next place value that we can borrow from. We trade them into the place value we are working with. We learnt the cup game that uses the ‘Cup Song’ to help us remember to borrow from the next place value. Science: In our lesson this week we looked at the relative sizes of the earth, moon and the sun and how far away from each other they are. If we were to work in a rough scale with the sun being the size of an exercise ball (approx. 1m diameter) then the earth would be approximately the size of a marble (9mm) and the moon was the size of a pepper corn (we used a small Lego piece). The sun would be roughly 109m away from the earth and the moon would be 27cm from the earth. We also used models to explain how we know the sun and the moon are different sizes by learning about perspective and distance. Unfortunately Mrs Anthony was unwell this week. We hope she gets better soon. Mr Horton

Grade 5 News

This week we studied the graphemes “ou, ow in cloud and flower In addition to our usual word study activities,

the class have been given a daily four word jumble challenge which involves the children applying their knowledge of sound combinations to come up with the correct solutions. The class has found this activity both challenging and rewarding. Writing focus: This week our writing focus has been looking at the structure to write a biography. We looked at a Walt Disney You Tube biography and discussed what information was included and what made it interesting to watch. The class has begun working on writing the first section of their biography on their notable’s early life Maths focus: This week in Maths we revised the area of measurement particularly length. We measured in millimetres and centimetres and converted millimetres, centimetres, metres and kilometres using the correct decimal notation. We also continued with our daily mental arithmetic activities and revised our knowledge of angles. We also revised our final refinement of subtraction through our pick a box activity. Other things to know: The class has been working wonderfully well on their notables assignment and I have been very pleased with the standard of work that has been produced. As usual the grade has been a pleasure to teach this week.

Jim Leicester

Grade Four

Literacy/ Soundwaves focus: This week we still working on out Literacy circles. It’s been great to see majority of the

students doing their best work and being proactive in their reading. We have focused on cause and effect relationships

and have done this using a labelled map. We have looked at various cause and effect relationships that happen at school

and in our everyday lives to make these connections.

Our Soundwaves focus sound is th and th. These two graphemes make different sounds and it’s been tricky trying to

identify these. Words include anthem, throw, athletic and thoughtless. Words for the other sound include they’re, their,

there and weather.

Writing focus: This week we have focused on information reports and how to introduce sub-

heading. The students have been working in their rotations beautifully and each have chosen

their own animal to research and write a report on. Next week we will be looking at how we can

put our research and facts into our own words, not just copying from the website.

Maths focus: We have been revising vertical addition and subtraction with money this week.

The students have also been working on how we can have different combinations of coins and

notes to make the same money totals. The students got to plan a party with a budget

and certain things they needed to provide the party with. They really enjoyed this

and found it tricky to stick to a budget. We have also started looking at angles and the names

we use to identify them. Next week we will be measuring angles using a protractor.

Science: In science this week, we learnt about how far the sun and moon are from Earth and

why they look the same to our human eye, even though they are different sizes. We did this

outside by using basketballs, tennis balls and marbles.

Other things to know: Homework will now go home on a Wednesday. This is due to the special-

ist timetable changing. Have a great weekend.

Music

This week in music we have had a great time reviewing the dance from last week (Heel and Toe Polka) which all the students were really great at remembering. This week’s dance was the Queensland Backstep. It is an easy dance to learn and the students had fun with this one. Our theory this week was around music for different purposes. Prep and Grade 1 learnt about ballet and performed two songs and dances involving different animals. Grades 2, 3 and 4 looked learnt about a song written by slaves which is considered a spiritual song and then identified other music for different purposes such as opera that tells a story and rhyming songs used in games. Grades 5 and 6 continued to learn more about Blues music and used the Bo Diddley beat in a call and response song and then learnt about adding harmonies to the song.

Health

Prep: This week, the preps continued to write their class health and wellbeing pledges and then went on to identify each others favourite food which will be used to complete a simple class graph.

Grade 1 & 2: This week the grade one and two students finished their ’Feeling Good’ work-sheet and then shared varies words that describe how they feel when they eat healthy foods and are active. Students then thought about what their favourite foods are and went around the class to find out each others favourite foods which will be used in a graph.

Grade 3 & 4: The grade three and four students finished working on their health and well-being presentations. A presentation that aims to educate and encourage others to maintain their health and wellbeing.

Grade 5 & 6: This week in health, grade five and six students continued working on their presentations based on promoting health and being.

Mrs Drew

Physical Education

Grade Prep, 1 & 2: This week the grade prep to two students continued to work on their

skipping skills. Students practiced individual skipping, pair skipping and finished with some group

skipping skills using the long ropes.

Grade 3-6: This week, the grade three to six students have continued to develop their individual, pair and

group skipping skills and then began or continued developing their knowledge and skills of cricket.

This week’s waste-free warrior award goes to Mr L and the grade 5 students, well done! Grade

5 had 12 out of 13 students waste-free! All other grades did an amazing job with only a few

children in each grade bringing plastic in their lunch box. Even grade 6 had more waste-free

lunches this week! It is so exciting to see so many families thinking about the environment

and making these simple changes to their lunch box. As the

weather warms up students will be reminded to use water wisely. Some children are using

the bubble taps to wash their hands and face, or cool themselves down by wetting their hats

or hair. This is not efficient use of our water, and students are reminded that the bubble taps

are for drinking water only. Students can also bring a water bottle to school, which can be re-

filled throughout the day if needed.

You will receive unbiased advice, stories of what worked, what didn’t and various alternative solutions as you move through the house and surrounds. It’s a chance to see how all the refusing, reducing, reusing, recycling, and composting fit together under one roof. The number of participants will be kept small to allow for in-depth discus-

sion and meaningful outcomes for all participants.

Tammy is offering Poowong Consolidated School parents this opportunity for the reduced price of $50 (down from

$80).
