Page 17: The Pewter Society · The Pewter Society . Auction No.19 . Autumn meeting, 29 - 30th September 2012 . Angel Hotel, Abergavenny . Lot 1: Britannia metal jug 5ins Estimate £10 - £15

Lot 75: An extremely scarce early seventeenth century pottel baluster measure with a hammerhead thumbpiece, of one Henry VII ale pint capacity, with an unrecorded maker’s mark, and a nice sharp hR verification mark, ownership initials W R M in the form of a triad on the top of the lid and repeated at the top of the handle. 6¾” 18 fl oz. c 1620 -1650.. Nice linen mark where the handle joins at the top and the underside of the lid has nice lathe turning. Estimate £1150 – 1400

Capacity, is 18 fl oz. Homer and Shemmell in ‘A Handbook of Selected Tudor and Stuart Pieces’ show that this capacity was referred to as a pottel and was a division of the Henry VII ale gallon. Law (J. Pewter Society, Autumn 1994, 154-5) illustrates four hammerhead baluster measures from quart to gill all based upon the 18 fl oz pottel.

The hR verification stamp was used to indicate compliance with the standard of Henry VII. The initials are for Henricius Rex. It was unclear for many years why a lower case ‘h’ was used, but Angus McInnes (J Pewter Society, Spring 1991, 28-31) showed that this was the lombardic lettering form of ‘H’. He postulated that this verification stamp continued in use for the duration of use of the pottel capacity, being changed only in the second half of the seventeenth century. After this time the form of the mark changed to one using the more familiar capital ‘H’.

It appears that this piece was buried soon after manufacture, and this would explain the sharpness of the initials on the lid, the verification mark, the linen mark inside, and the makers mark.
