But many scientists areexposed to much higher magnetic fields during the course of their work.Rolex’s solution was the Milgauss, created in 1956, the first watch of itskind. Hence the name of the watch, mille being French for thousand.

In a mechanical watch, the oscillator is the guardian oftime. Conventional oscillator hairsprings are made offerromagnetic alloys, leaving them vulnerable tomagnetic fields, temperature variations and shocks thatinterfere with their precision. After years of research,Rolex created the blue Parachrom hairspring, which isfiner than a human hair.

Crafted from a highly stable paramagnetic alloy thatincludes niobium and zirconium, it is insensitive tomagnetic fields and up to 10 times more resistant toshocks. Historically, the unique blue color of thehairspring has been a sign of prestige reserved for onlythe most accurate timepieces.

3131 MOVEMENTThe Milgauss is equipped with calibre 3131, a self-winding mechanicalmovement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex. It incorporatesstate-of-the-art technologies patented by the brand that ensureexceptional resistance to magnetic fields.

Like all Rolex Perpetual movements, the 3131 is a certified Swisschronometer, a designation reserved for high-precision watches that havesuccessfully passed the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute(COSC) tests.
