The Oyster Perpetual MILGAUSS
Oyster, 40 mm, Oystersteel
MILGAUSSThe Milgauss, introduced in 1956, was designed to meet thedemands of the scientific community and is capable ofwithstanding magnetic fields of up to 1,000 gauss. It becameknown notably as the watch worn by scientists at the EuropeanOrganization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva. The new-generation Milgauss, introduced in 2007, features severalinnovative components that enhance protection from magneticinterference.

Style of the Milgauss
INSTANTLYRECOGNISABLEThe Milgauss has remained faithful to its scientific heritage and uniqueidentity as it has evolved. With its clean lines and evocative orangeseconds hand, shaped like a lightning bolt to echo the original model, theMilgauss is recognisable at a glance.

Function of the Milgauss
AN EFFICIENTSHIELDING SYSTEMThe first innovation at the heart of the Milgauss' resistance to magneticinterference is the shield inside the Oyster case. Made of ferromagneticalloys selected by Rolex, it surrounds and protects the movement. The symbol for magnetic flux density – the capital letter 'B' with an arrow –is engraved in this magnetic shield, but only Rolex-certified watchmakerswill ever see it.
5
Function of the Milgauss
PARAMAGNETICCOMPONENTSSeveral key components in the movement of the new‑generation Milgaussare made of innovative paramagnetic materials, including the blueParachrom hairspring. They were developed and are made in-house withadvanced technology thanks to Rolex’s unique command of the wholewatchmaking process.

Spirit of the Milgauss
HISTORY OFTHE MILGAUSSThe reliability and precision of an ordinary mechanical watch can beaffected by a magnetic field of 50 to 100 gauss. But many scientists areexposed to much higher magnetic fields during the course of their work.Rolex’s solution was the Milgauss, created in 1956, the first watch of itskind. Hence the name of the watch, mille being French for thousand.

Spirit of the Milgauss
THE LARGEST LABORATORY,THE TINIEST PARTICLEThe European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), the world's pre-eminent particle physics laboratory, is at the cutting edge of scientificresearch into the fundamental secrets of the universe.
It hosts the world's highest-energy particle accelerator. In the 1950s,CERN was also one of the first scientific institutions to confirm that theMilgauss watch could indeed resist magnetic fields of up to 1,000 gauss.

Features
OYSTERSTEEL
Rolex uses Oystersteel for its steel watch cases.Specially developed by the brand, Oystersteel belongsto the 904L steel family, superalloys most commonlyused in high-technology and in the aerospace andchemical industries, where maximum resistance tocorrosion is essential. Oystersteel is extremely resistant, offers an exceptional finish once polished andmaintains its beauty even in the harshest environments.Oystersteel also provides a perfect complement to theprecious metals used by Rolex.

Features
THE PARACHROMHAIRSPRING
In a mechanical watch, the oscillator is the guardian oftime. Conventional oscillator hairsprings are made offerromagnetic alloys, leaving them vulnerable tomagnetic fields, temperature variations and shocks thatinterfere with their precision. After years of research,Rolex created the blue Parachrom hairspring, which isfiner than a human hair.
Crafted from a highly stable paramagnetic alloy thatincludes niobium and zirconium, it is insensitive tomagnetic fields and up to 10 times more resistant toshocks. Historically, the unique blue color of thehairspring has been a sign of prestige reserved for onlythe most accurate timepieces.

Features
OYSTER BRACELET
The Oyster bracelet is a perfect alchemy of form andfunction, aesthetics and technology. First introduced inthe late 1930s, this particularly robust and comfortablemetal bracelet with its broad, flat three-piece linksremains the most universal bracelet in the Oystercollection.

Features
3131 MOVEMENTThe Milgauss is equipped with calibre 3131, a self-winding mechanicalmovement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex. It incorporatesstate-of-the-art technologies patented by the brand that ensureexceptional resistance to magnetic fields.
Like all Rolex Perpetual movements, the 3131 is a certified Swisschronometer, a designation reserved for high-precision watches that havesuccessfully passed the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute(COSC) tests. Its architecture, in common with all Oyster watchmovements, makes it singularly reliable.

Features
SUPERLATIVECHRONOMETERThe green seal accompanying every Rolex watch is a symbol of its statusas a Superlative Chronometer. This exclusive designation attests that ithas successfully undergone a series of specific final controls by Rolex inits own laboratories according to its own criteria, in addition to the officialCOSC certification of its movement. This unique testing of thechronometric precision of the cased-up movement, as well as of thewatch’s waterproofness, self-winding and power reserve, pushes backthe boundaries of performance and makes Rolex the benchmark forexcellence in mechanical watches. The green seal is coupled with afive‑year guarantee which applies to all Rolex models.
