    NEW MEMBERS

A letter from the Bishop… September 18, 2012 Rev. John Moore District Superintendent New Albany District Mississippi Area of the United Methodist Church PO Box 686 New Albany, MS 38652 Dear Rev. Moore,

I regret that I was not able to be present for the fiftieth anniversary of the integration of the University of Mississippi by Mr. James Howard Meredith. Unfortunately, an event previously scheduled, before being assigned as the Resident Bishop of the Mississippi Area of the United Methodist Church, prevented me from being present at this celebration.

I was twelve years old when Mr. Meredith took his historic walk to declare that he was an equal citizen of the United States and of the state of Mississippi, and I had no idea at that time that I would some 50 years later be assigned as the first African American to serve as the Bishop of the United Methodist churches in Mississippi. Therefore, I was directly affected by Mr. Meredith’s decision to fulfill what he described as his ”… Divine Responsibility…” what James Meredith did in fighting for the right to be educated at the University of Mississippi not only made higher education in Mississippi accessible to African Americans but also paved the way for Anglo Americans to be liberated from their need to feel superior to other races. His courage exposed the ugly sin of racism not just in Mississippi but in America. I realize that the South in general, and Mississippi in particu-lar, continue to be places where we seek to root out the vestiges of racism, but we are aware that this need to feel superior to others is not simply a southern or Mississippi challenge. It is a sin that takes root and grows wherever people are not inoculated with the truth that all people are created in the image and likeness of God.

In a recent Pew Research Report, Mississippi was ranked as the most religious state in the United States. We are first in the importance of religion in people’s lives, first in frequency of attendance at worship services, first in frequency of prayer and first in absolute certainty of belief in God. Now wouldn’t it be great on this fiftieth anniversary if we Christians in Mississippi flexed our collective muscles and worked to move Mississippi to first in racial inclusivity and opportunity for all people regardless of race.

Mr. Meredith, this would be a great way to celebrate your courage and God standing with you. thank you Mississippi Christian community for leading this celebration.

Blessings, Bishop James E. Swanson, Jr.

Taylor Ivy, Tanner, Janie, and Trace Turner 662-404-0459 The Turner family joined OU-UMC on September 30 by trans-ferring their letter from First United Methodist Church in Batesville. Janie teaches fourth

grade at Lawndale Elementary in Tupelo. Taylor Ivy is a recent graduate of Ole Miss. Tanner is a freshman at Ole Miss, and Trace is in the fourth grade.

Sept. 30, 2012 many from OU worshiped at Burns UMC celebrating 50 years of integration at The Univ. of MS. At this service, OU member Lloyd Hewitt was recognized for teaching Sunday school at Burns for 2 1/2 years. In appreciation for his service Burns gave him a plaque with the following inscription:

Certificate of Recognition Burns United Methodist Church

    acknowledges and honors

    Lloyd Hewitt

as an essential piece in God's work of revealing His truth through the use of his gift from God to lead

and teach here at Burns United Methodist Church. We celebrate our partnership with Burns UMC and the entire UM Connection!

In recent days, the town of Oxford has been mourning the death of Pat Lamar and remembering her many gifts given through her leadership. But she also gave a special gift to our church which many of you may not know about.

In the early 80s, Pat researched the history of Oxford and Lafayette county and commissioned a needle-work designer in Memphis to paint on a series of canvases some of the historical facts Pat had acquired. When finished, the pillow designs reflect the first little Methodist church in Oxford, the signing of the treaty with the Indians, establishing Lafayette county, and another shows the marching away of the University Grays to the Civil War where they suffered almost 100 casualties.

A number of the women in the church worked on these pillows for months and, from time to time, Pat would gather us all at her house to see how the work was progressing. I can’t remember who all worked other than Mrs. Kazar, Marion

Bruce’s mother, Jenny Arnold, Carolyn Pegram, and me. When the needlework was finally finished, Pat took them all and had them made into cushions which you kneel on when you come to the altar. They are beautiful, valuable, and represent a loving gift to our church from Pat Lamar.

    COLLEGE MINISTRIES

    College Ministries Host Family Luncheon

This past Sunday, the College Ministry Team hosted a lunch to connect OU families with students. We have 20 OU families

who will be serving as hosts for around 25 local college students. What does this mean? This simply means OU families have

committed to be intentional about making students feel welcome at OU through inviting them to sitting with them in church,

including them in a meal now and then, sending them texts or e-mail, calling to see how they can pray for the students, etc.

Thank you to ALL who have volunteered thus far. We have already received feedback from the students that they are

thrilled about and very appreciative of their OU Hosts!

We will continue to add new students throughout the year, so if you are interested in being a Host Family, it is not too late! Just

contact Allyson Willis (662-231-9929; [email protected]).

    Missionary Visit

Members of OU’s Mission and Outreach Team, Jean Shaw and Sloan Hunter (chair) and Alex and Brenda Awad, missionaries at Bethlehem Bible College.

On Thursday, September 20, missionaries Alex and Brenda Awad gave a brief presentation on their time at Bethlehem Bible College. They presented OU with a hand-stitched banner as a show of appreciation for our continued financial support.
