Things are Heating Up!
What an exciting time of the year and in our lodge. As the trees
and flowers bloom out I am looking forward to seeing our members do
the same. There are many activities to attend and enjoy. Try bocce,
or plan a trip with either the Kamper Caravan or the Travel
Committee. As you see events on the calendar choose one or two you
could help with. Volunteers arer needed at ALL of our events and it
is great fun to be involved in the planning and execution of events
that so many people enjoy.
Elks National Foundation – We are starting fresh with our per
capita goal within our lodge, we have set our goal high as ENF is
responsible for funding so many things in our state and across the
country. The percentage of funds returned to Colorado from donated
dollars has been as high as 200+ %. How can you lose on this? See
Betty Moore for more information
Veterans Committee has many events scheduled throughout the
summer. Find a way to attend and / or assist!
Things at the Lakewood Elks are red hot because we are moving so
fast, get involved!

Lodge BPOE #1777
This event will bring Elks from many parts of Colorado into our
Lodge and is a great opportunity for Lodge members to offer their
support for the home team as they compete with other lodges. It
will be an ALL DAY event and we are required to serve three meals.
We need many volunteers of all sorts to make this day a success.
Please consider offering a few volunteer hours to what will be a
showcase day for our lodge.
Are you ready to join us?
Go to LAKEWOODELKS . COM/ to find the link for Signup Genius and

Lodge Room.
We hold a cash drawing each meeting starting at $50 and
increasing by $50 each time a Member number is drawn that is not
present.

John & Venita Collier sponsor Catch–a-Calf
Amada shown with her parents and the
Colliers
Since 1935,the Colorado Elks Association, member Lodges, The
Wyoming Elks and others sponsor the Catch-a-Calf Program held in
conjunction with the National Western Stock Show each year. This is
the story of John & Venita’s adventure.
John and Venita Collier, PER's from Lakewood Elks 1777 have
turned a new leaf to venture out and sponsor a Catch-a-Calf
participant this year. Saturday, May 5th, we started the day at the
Stock Show grounds with a very delicious breakfast, meeting Amanda
Hartzell, an 8th grader from Bennett, our girl that we are
sponsoring and her mother, Rose and father, Phil. We are sponsoring
1/3 and Arvada Lodge is sponsoring the other 2/3rd's.
Representatives from Arvada were Bob Denning, Joey Cusimano and
Ryan Andersen.
This is a National competition. In our group there are 40 kids
from Colorado, Nebraska, Wyoming, and Kansas. This requires a daily
dedication by the participant in car-ing, grooming, feeding, and
taking care of their steer for the January judging Catch-a Calf at
the Stock Show. Amanda named her steer Maximus. Many requirements
are part of their commitment and we will be cheering her along the
way, visiting her and Maximus and of course wishing her the best.
Her steer weighed 669 pounds and by January who knows? Let's give
her our support and pray she wins. She is a very delightful, polite
girl; very active in school, plays sax in the band and is 1st in
Tae kwon do.
As I said this is a new venture for us and we are very proud to
be part of this. Submitted by Venita Collier

Severe Weather Shelter Network is done sheltering for the
season. We look forward to partnering with all of you again next
fall!
We celebrate that we registered 399 individuals over the course
of the season. You helped us do that! We sheltered 45 nights. It
was a mild winter again this year, but we are so glad that we were
able to provide shelter when it was needed most. I am learning the
num-ber of individuals that were housed this season. The count
right now stands at 8. I am hoping it will be more than that as we
connect with each of our partners over the spring and summer
months. Stay tuned! We have two more suburban communities asking
about the possibility of sheltering in their area. Wow! We will see
how that plays out
as well. This summer is going to be a busy one!
Thank you again for the support, and your partnership over this
last season. We could not have done it with out you!

VETERANS CORNER WITH TOM KELLY
PAGE 5 THE BUGLE
Hi! My name is Tom Kelly, and I’m the new Chairman of the
Lodge’s Veterans Committee. I thought I’d use my first col-
umn to say a few ‘Thank You’ s’
First, – a ‘shout-out’ to Steve Patterson, who has been writing
this column for a very long time; and what a fine job he has
done. Thanks Steve for all your efforts over the years, and for
all the positive things the committee has accomplished while
you were Chairman. The Vets Committee is very lucky that Steve
is going to stay involved with the committee, providing
historical perspective, helping with current initiatives, and
just being his positive self.
Next – another ‘shout-out’, this one to Venita Collier and Bill
Fava. Their efforts have caused the 50/50 drawings at the
Thursday evening dances to be reinstated. The feedback I’ve
received is that many of the dancers enjoy the drawing, be-
cause they can win some money, (they get 50%), but in large part
because our 50% will be used to help vets. Bill and Veni-
ta spent a bunch of time gathering and presenting info regarding
funds likely to be collected from the drawings, and poten-
tial uses for those funds to help Vets. After committee review,
they presented their work to the Board and received approval
to go ahead. Thanks Venita and Bill for your work on this; and
special thanks to Bill for conducting these drawings each
Thursday.
An additional ‘shout-out’ goes to Will Webb and Venita Collier
for agreeing to be, respectively, Deputy Chairman and Sec-
retary/Treasurer of the committee. Venita’s efforts of keeping
track of money and capturing the minutes of our meetings .
And the final ‘shout-out’ is to all the members of the
committee, both who make good things happen for our military
veteran
brothers and sisters.
Upcoming (or recent) Events:
Tuesday, May 15 – Vets’ Committee Meeting
Friday – Sunday, June 1 – 3 - CEA Veteran’s Committee Training
Summit
Sunday, June 3rd, Lodge Military Veterans’ Patio Party
Saturday, June 30, The Vets Committee hosts the Jefferson County
Platoon; and;
The Americanism Committee Reading of the U.S. Constitution
The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks is celebrating 150
years of Elkdom. We have an extraordinary history of con-tribution,
from medical units in France during WW1 to giving hospitals to the
Federal Government after the War. We, as Elks, give millions of
dollars each year to Veterans, Children, and the Communi-ty, plus
the many hours we volunteer to accomplish these benevolent
activities that help so many. This does not take into account all
the social activities we enjoy as Members
How do we make all of this happen? Let me answer this with one
word, MEM-BERS. I need your help bringing in new members. I am
looking for anyone that wants to see our Lodge membership con-tinue
to grow.
Please contact me at (720)231-5338 or [email protected]

Americanism Robert Laster
Trying Men’s Souls
There have been so many patriots who have con-tributed to the
making of America. Many individuals have become famous, others
haven’t received the attention they deserve. During Colonial Times
Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Hamilton and Franklin were the
headliners but other colonists also added their talents to
America’s inde-pendence.
Edmund Randolph presented to the Philadelphia Convention the
Virginia Plan which called for executive, judicial and legislative
branches of government: Roger Sherman introduced the four year
terms for President and Vice President; John Jay advocated a strong
central-ized government; John Dickinson stood firmly against
taxation without representation; Archibald MacNeal Willard painted
the famous picture of a young drummer, a white haired drummer and
the flute player marching side by side into battle; Gilbert Stuart
painted the picture of President Washington that appeared every day
for years in classrooms across America; Elbridge Gerry advo-cated
for the addition of a Bill of Rights to the U.S. Consti-tution;
John Trumbull painted the historic moment when, after the Battle of
Saratoga, British General John Bur-goyne surrendered to American
General Horatio Gates; Nathanael Greene rose from Private to
General in one year because of his heroic actions against British
forces; General Daniel Morgan proved to be one of the brilliant
tacticians of the Revolution; Francis Marion was called the ”Swamp
Fox” because of his lightning fast raids on British camps, and was
never caught by British hunters; Richard Henry Lee introduced a
strongly worded resolution for independence to the Continental
Congress.
Thomas Paine, a noted author of the day, wrote “These are the
times that try men’s souls.”

The 2017-2018 dart season ended April 25 with a delicious
banquet catered by Scratch Catering.
We had six fun teams this year with several new players and we
are looking forward to next season with even more teams and people
to share a good time with.
The team of Cox’s Corner was the highest scoring team this year
with members Bette Cox, Larry Snell, Randy Rogers and Sylvia
Trujillo throwing.
We had a nice long list of substitutes to draw from when a
person couldn’t make it on Wednesday night and we were lucky with
the weather so there were no snow cancellations.
It was a great season which starts in October, so there will be
an announcement in the September Bugle of a meeting date. Please
watch for it. Sylvia Trujillo
