Daniel J. ZimmermanSecretary of the

Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs

Dear King Members,

Over the past couple of months, I have enjoyed spending my time here at King getting to know you, your families, and many of the King staff. Before becoming Secretary, I had heard many good things about King. I have now seen firsthand the dedication of our staff and the strong commitment our many volunteers make to all of you who live here. This, along with the many conversations I have had with many of you, is truly invigorating.

One of the things I heard when I first started working from here is that people – both members and staff - wanted more say in what happens here. And so in the spirit of maintaining a culture that is open, transparent and forthright, I have worked to gather input and have more discussion with you and staff to identify items that you would like to see changed.

Some of you have expressed to me that the coffee shop is an area of concern that you would like to see changed. So I have decided to change it to reflect what the members want. This is your home and I want you to be comfortable and enjoy living here. And, while there were budgetary reasons for the changes that were made to the coffee shop last year, the coffee shop has other qualities beneficial to the quality of life that can’t be measured in dollars and cents. We always strive to be good stewards of the resources we have, but we can also be good stewards while continuing to provide amenities like the coffee shop.

We will be gathering more feedback in the coming weeks, but the coffee shop format will be changing to something our you and your families want that isn’t currently being provided. You want your coffee shop back to the way it was and that’s something we can do while still making improvements to the way it is run.

Thank you to all who have taken the time to speak with me about your concerns. I’m here to serve you and look forward to working to make King an even better place for Veterans and their families.

Attention King MembersLast October the small knitting group I belong to was approached by Jeff Welch, a volunteer at the Veterans Home in King, who asked if we’d consider coming to King to teach/knit with the residents there. We agreed, and have been coming to King twice a month since then. We meet at Marden Hall from 10 to 11 a.m. the first and third Monday of every month.

At first, we had no idea of what the needs were. Would we get individuals who had never knit before and wanted to learn? Would we have people who just wanted help with the projects they were working on? Or maybe we’d just have a group who were interested in gathering with others with the same interest – namely, knitting.

Now, several months into it I realize we have had a variety – pretty much all of the above. Some were avid knitters who just came to be with others who also enjoyed this craft. Some knit at one time but hadn’t in years and wanted a refresher – a little help and guidance to get them going again. Others had never knit but were interested in learning. All were welcomed and we certainly have enjoyed spending time with and getting to know these wonderful ladies!

However, I would love to see our small group grow. We welcome both men and women – anyone interested in learning to knit or crochet, or anyone just interested in seeing what it’s all about. No pressure! Just come and check it out.

There are so many benefits to using your hands to produce something beautiful and useful. Keeping your hands and fingers flexible, keeping your mind sharp are two that come to mind, but also just remaining social and enjoying each other’s company and conversation.

Perhaps you’ve been hesitant to join us because you do not own a pair of knitting needles or yarn, but let me assure you that we have plenty of what you’d need. We have yarn, patterns, needles

galore! These are all located in Marden Hall where we meet.

We’d love your input into how we can better meet your needs regarding our group. Would you be more likely to

attend if we held it in your hall? Do you need more information? Come to our next session, ask your

questions and share your thoughts.

TREASUREI gave you a treasure map,to a land of hidden sails.and waterfalls and gaps. That lie along its trails.

This treasure map you now possess even though you do not see…

But it’s there any less.I tucked it in your pocket.

Where my soul to you I bare.

That map is such a curious thing, the paper old and stained.

And yet the writing is clear and fresh,as if written yesterday.

Look close you’ll see some older marks. The lines are faint and dim.

As if the thing was washed and wrung, and left to dry in the wind.

Should all the world be sent to search. For the treasures I describe.

Not one would find them there, though they search the world wide.

For this treasure map is… to my heart. The prize… our love secured.

Its directions marked with loving care.To ensure our love endures.

“Death, Burial, and Resurrection” Part 1

WISCONSIN VETERANS HOME AT KINGChaplain’s Column

11

continued on page 17

As I am writing this month’s Chaplain Column, I realize that this article’s printing will come to you during the Lenten Season and before the celebration of three of history’s most significant events…the death, the burial, and the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Most will say that we can certainly celebrate the resurrection of Jesus, but to celebrate His death and burial? Why would we call the day that we reflect on Jesus’ death on the cross, “Good Friday? Let’s go on a journey and you be the one to answer this question.

John 11: 17-26(NIV): On his arrival, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days. Bethany was less than two miles from Jerusalem, and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them on the loss of their brother. When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home. Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.” Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again. “Martha answered, “I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day. “Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” What a question for us today from Jesus, “Do you believe this?”

Jesus had these “words of comfort”, to share with his good friend Martha, on his way to raise Lazarus from the dead. Martha and Mary were experiencing great pain and grief in the death and burial of their brother, Lazarus. We too have experienced the death and burial of a loved

one. We have felt the pain and grief that comes with the loss.

How can this possibly be a time of celebration?

When Jesus heard Lazarus’ need for help, he said: “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.” (John 11:4 NIV)

Jesus had in mind, the “bigger picture.” He knew that Lazarus would experience a resurrection from the tomb. Jesus also knew that Lazarus’ physical death and burial would need to take place before Lazarus’ resurrection would be available.

Jesus knows our need as well…Romans 6:23(NIV) For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Jesus came to this earth for reason, so eloquently spoken by John the Baptist in John 1:29(NIV). The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” Have you spent time reflecting this Lenten and Easter season about the suffering that Jesus did on your behalf….about the shedding of His blood to cover your sin, His death on the Cross for you, about His burial, and about His powerful resurrection from the dead…gaining victory over death…over the grave…for you? Could this be the very reason we call the day of Jesus’ death and burial, “Good Friday?” Could this be cause for celebration over the death and burial of a loved one who is in Christ?

National Women’s History Month - March 1st through March 31st.

National Women’s History month is a relatively new celebration, and originally, was only celebrated for one week in March. In 1978, ‘The Education Task Force of the Sonoma County Commission on the Status of Women had their first “Women’s History Week” celebration. The celebration grew rapidly, and in 1980, President Carter issued a Presidential Proclamation declaring the week of March 8, 1980 National Women’s History Week.

As more states and schools celebrated National Women’s History Month, the effort to lobby for celebrations the week of March 8th (that changes from year to year) became an issue. In 1986 Congress declared the entire month of March, 1987 as National Women’s History Month going forward.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of National Women’s History Month.

Over the past months, I have had to say, “so long” to a number of our members at the Veterans Home at King, who have passed on into eternity. How about you? I have been reflecting about Jesus’ resurrection power and the significance it holds for me, for our deceased members…..for you.

I have been reflecting on the words that Jesus spoke…the powerful truth and promise that he spoke to Martha over 2000 years ago. The certainty that Jesus truly is…the resurrection and the life…powerfully displayed in His own resurrection!

But before Jesus experienced His own Resurrection, He had a message to give...a miracle to perform…in the resurrection of His good friend Lazarus.

Jesus’ love motivated His message which needed to be expressed to Martha, Mary, and all of the Jewish folks who had come to grieve with the sisters. Jesus’ message: that He is the resurrection and the life, he

who believes in me will live, even though he dies; whoever lives and believes in me will never die…a statement with a question to follow for Martha; “Do you believe this?”

So many years later, Jesus still asks this same question to me…to you; “Do you believe this?”

Jesus wanted to know IF Martha believed what He said, about Himself…Jesus today desires to know IF you believe what He said, about Himself.

For this month’s Chaplain Column we will end herePart 2 will continue next month, as we will look for Martha’s response and the powerfull Resurrection of Lazarus and Jesus.

May you have a blessed Lenten Season and Easter Sunday!

A Smile for a Pair of Shoes

This morning the privilege of seeing a big smile on the face of a veteran over a new pair of shoes was observed at the KX. As staff watched this man try on the shoes, he was not reluctant to share his happiness by exclaiming, “They’re perfect!” That statement alone was music to our ears.

This occurrence is only a small part of what we experience on a daily basis in the KX. There are days when members and members of their families are in disbelief over what we have and are able to provide for the men and women who reside here.

In addition, it thrills our hearts to meet the clothing needs of men and women who come in with literally nothing but what they are wearing.

To our donors: Please accept our heartfelt THANKS! You are the unsung heroes!

The Dog Who Knew Too Much by Spencer Quinn This story is told from the perspective of a dog named Chet. Chet belongs to Bernie Little, and the pair is hired to find a kid (Devin) who has gone missing from a wilderness camp. The hiking guide insists that Devin wandered away from the group; some speculate that Devin was hounded by bullies and driven away from the campsite during the night; Devin’s mother thinks her ex-husband has snatched the boy! Chet, with his trusty sniffing skills, will solve the mystery. Reading this doggy world-view “reminds us of what we love best about canines: the unconditional love they show their humans, and the boundless enthusiasm they feel for life, every single day.”

The Widow of the South by Robert Hicks It is 1894, and Carrie McGavock is still tending to the 1500 Confederate dead that are buried in her back yard. Three decades ago, the Battle of Franklin, one of the bloodiest of the Civil War, took place on Carrie’s land, and these graves were the result. During the war, Carrie’s home was used as a hospital for the wounded and dying. At that time, Carrie met and fell in love with a man named Zachariah. The two were drawn together by the torment of the war, but Carrie was a married woman. Now, 30 years later, Zachariah shows up on her doorstep again. This novel is particularly interesting because much of it is true. Carrie McGavock was one of the unsung heroes of the Civil War. She “persevered in the most hellish of circumstances. Yet from all this carnage emerges a love story that transcends time.”

Paradise Lost by J. A. Jance Joanna Brady, sheriff of Cochise County in Arizona, has a very innocent 13-year-old daughter named Jennifer. A Girl Scout Memorial Day weekend camping trip finds Jennifer sharing her tent with wild child Dora Matthews. (Dora is a pregnant, fatherless waif with a missing junkie mother!) At Dora’s prodding, the 2 girls slip away in the desert night. Their unauthorized hike leads them to a gruesome discovery: the body of a murdered Phoenix heiress. Sheriff Brady, while concerned about the trauma this discovery may have caused her daughter, sets out to find the murderer. She begins by trying to track down the woman’s husband, who cleaned out their accounts before he vanished. It isn’t long, however, until Joanna realizes that the 2 girls may be in danger. Does someone consider them “loose ends” who were snooping around where they had no business hiking that night?

Delivering Death by Julie Kramer “Be careful what you open….” TV reporter Riley Spartz is a star investigative journalist for Channel 3 in Minneapolis. One day, she receives a package of human teeth in the mail at work! Riley becomes embroiled in one of the odder homicide cases the local police force has ever seen. Bottom line is – it seems that the killer wants the crime publicized! Follow Riley as she investigates a lucrative identity-theft ring that links low-life crooks to white-collar opportunists.

The Assassin by Clive Cussler and Justin Scott Here is “historical action-adventure fiction at its rip-roaring best!” The year is 1905, and Isaac Bell, a Van Dorn private detective, wants to get a government contract to investigate John D. Rockefeller’s Standard Oil monopoly. Now a sniper has begun murdering opponents of Standard Oil! This assassin shoots with extraordinary accuracy and at seemingly impossible long range. The intensity climbs when Bell’s best witness is assassinated. Then the shooter detonates a terrible explosion that sets the victim’s independent refinery ablaze.

Critical by Robin Cook Doctor Angela Dawson seems to have it all! At the young age of 37, she owns a great apartment in New York City AND a stunning seaside house on Nantucket. She enjoys her prosperous lifestyle in spite of the remnants of a troubled childhood, failed marriage, and even an episode of bankruptcy. She now has a new degree (MBA), and is launching Angels Healthcare. Her future looks very bright, with a controlling interest in 3 busy New York City hospitals and plans for others in Miami and Los Angeles! But suddenly, a surge of drug-resistant staph infections at all 3 hospitals turns Angela’s world upside down. With patients dying and her business in jeopardy, Angela works around the clock to try to save what she’s built.

Death Song by Michael McGarrity A double homicide investigation finds Police Chief Kevin Kerney and his son Sergeant Clayton Istee working together to solve the crimes. They soon discover that the deaths of a deputy sheriff in Lincoln County and of his wife in Santa Fe are linked to a major drug trafficking scheme. The investigation turns into a search for the slain deputy’s son who left Santa Fe under suspicious circumstances before his father’s death. A real page-turner!
