"The Victoriangovernment has anassistance package inplace that will be rolledout immediately for thosepeople who have lost theirhomes."

More than 70 fires areburning across Victoriaand 15 emergencywarnings are in effect.Emergency crews are alsofighting blazes in SouthAustralia and New SouthWales.

Global warming

Vast wildfires arecommon in Australia'sDecember-Februarysummer months, and lastyear's fanned a globalwarming debate.

According to Australia'sBureau of Meteorology, they followed the country'shottest year on record, which gave the firesa political edge.Environmentalists havereferred to Australia asthe Petri dish of climatechange, a place wherethe global warming"experiment" is actualitybeing tested out in reality.

Australia's newconservative PrimeMinister Tony Abbott wasreluctant to accept thatview. A volunteerfirefighter himself whogave up his day job to manthe hoses on occasion, oncedescribed the sciencebehind human-inducedclimate change as"absolute crap".

Bushfires sweep across south-east Australia

The ruling PartidoPopular (PP) standsalone in its attempt toseverely restrict theapplication of universaljustice in Spain. Allother political groups inParliament oppose thisinitiative, and madethat quite clearduring Tuesday’s plenarysession.

The government wantsto curtail this legalprinciple, which allowsSpanish courts to tryforeigners for crimescommitted abroad, inorder to end the diplomaticconflicts it has created. It is especially keento appease Chineseauthorities – Spain's High

Court has beguninvestigating topCommunist Party officials, including former presidentJiang Zemin, for crimesagainst humanity inTibet.

This past Monday, thecourt issued aninternational arrestwarrant against Zemin. The opposition claims thatthe PP’s initiative is sorestrictive that it will alsolimit the ability of lawenforcers to seize drugshipments out at sea, fight female genitalmutilation and pursuepaedophiles.

It will also lead to thedismissal of the

investigation into theApril 2003 death of aSpanish cameraman inIraq, José Couso, afterUS soldiers fired atthe hotel he was stayingin.

The plans have alsobeen criticised by asignificant number ofSpanish judges andinternational organisationssuch as Human RightsWatch and AmnestyInternational which haveissued statementsreminding Spain of theagreements it has signedwith other countries, andlamenting what they seeas political interferencewith the independence ofthe justice system.

Ruling party alonein bid to eliminateuniversal justice

Mr Abbott saidfire had alwaysbeen part of theAustralianexperience andlisted a whole hostof major firesacross the countrystretching backmore than acentury. Hiscomments drewthe ire ofenvironmentalists.

The former US vicepresident and climatechange campaigner, Al

Gore, said denying thelink between the fires andglobal warming was likeclaiming smoking didn'tcause lung cancer.

Mr Abbot has sincerefined his opinions andnow accepts globalwarming is happening.

Prosecutor seeks 19 yearsfor princess’s husbandAfter Princess Cristina’sappearance in court inPalma de Mallorca onSaturday, the anticorruptionprosecutor in the Nóosinvestigation, PedroHorrach, said she shouldnot be implicated in thebusiness dealings of herhusband, former Olympichandball medalist IñakiUrdangarin, and that overhalf of the 40 officialsuspects in the case shouldnot face charges.

But he went on toask for a prison sentenceof 19 years for Urdangarinand 15 years for hisformer business partnerDiego Torres. They areboth charged withembezzlement, falsifyingdocuments, tax fraud andother financial crimes. Asfor Princess Christina,Horrach said he willrecommend she pays€600,000 in civil liabilityfor being co-owner of thereal estate firm Aizoon, one of the companies usedby Urdangarin and intowhich he pumped €1.7million of illicit money.

Horrach said CarlosGarcía Revenga, the royalsecretary to PrincessCristina and her eldersister, Elena, should faceno charges, and neithershould Torres’ wife, AnaMaría Tejeiro.

Trusted her husband

Cristina arrived at thePalma de Mallorcacourthouse just before 10on Saturday, smiling andnodding at a barrageof photographers keptbehind a rail by police asshe got out of the car thatdelivered her to theback entrance of thecourthouse. At the frontentrance to the court, around 200 protestersyelling insults andcarrying Republican flagsand signs calling for theabolition of the monarchy, were held back by police.

During the ensuing sixhours of testimony,

Princess Cristina declinedto answer most of thequestions put to her byJudge José Castro abouther expenses and theincome she received from areal estate business. Hespecifically asked theprincess about herhusband’s financial affairsand her role at the defunctNóos Institute, which isthe subject of an ongoinginquiry into an allegedscheme to divert publicfunds paid out by tworegional governments forsports and tourism events.

Although the sessionwas held behind closeddoors, lawyers who wereinside the courtroom latertold reporters thatCristina had avoided mostof the judge’s questions, saying “I don’t know” and“I have no knowledgeabout that.” She also toldJudge Castro that sheknew nothing about theday-to-day operationsat Urdangarin’s NóosInstitute, even though shewas on the board ofdirectors, or at the Aizoonreal estate firm. “I trustedmy husband,” the princesssaid, referring to decisionsmade in both enterprises, and denied anywrongdoing.

It is the first time amember of the royalfamily has beensubpoenaed by a judge in acriminal inquiry, butsources inside the RoyalHousehold have said they

are confident that afterhearing her testimony,Judge Castro will removethe princess as an officialtarget in the investigation.

Leaked footage“unspeakable”

The princess'stestimony was supposed tohave been held in a closedsession, and all the peopleallowed into the court hadto leave mobile phones, laptops, tablets and otherrecording devices with thepolice at the entrance atthe courthouse.

However, El Mundo onSunday published animage of the king’sdaughter during her six-hour appearance takenfrom a video posted on theinternet. The chief judgein Palma de Mallorca,Francisco González, expressed his “indignation”at the breach of protocoland opened aninvestigation to find thesource of the leakedfootage. “Either they didn’tgo through the metaldetectors or the device wasa ridiculous size,” he said.

On Monday JudgeCastro called the leak“unspeakable” and said hehad “an idea of who mighthave been behind it,” butthat he could not revealanything further at thisstage. The princess'shusband had asked thePalma de Mallorca courtnot to videotape histestimony last Februaryprecisely because hefeared it would be leakedto the media.

End in sight

Now that he has heard

the princess's testimony,Judge Castro is expectedto close the case – which

has dragged on for morethan two years – inApril.

Immigrant deathtoll reaches 15

At least 15 people drownedin last Thursday’s tragicattempt by a large groupof migrants to reach theSpanish enclave of Ceuta. The search for bodiescontinued on Tuesday asthe Guardia Civil cameunder fire for allegedlyshooting at the dozens ofmigrants trying to swimfrom Morocco.

The victims eitherdrowned or died afterheavy waves slammedthem against the six-metre high wall thatextends some distanceout to the Mediterranean

and acts as a barrierthat divides Ceutaand Morocco. TheGuardia have denied theallegation.

The incident occurredafter Guardia securitycameras along the 8.2kilometre perimetercaptured images of alarge group of migrantsdescending from a fieldnear the Tangier highwayand closing in on theMoroccan security post atBab Septa. Moroccansecurity forces alerted theGuardia that they wereapproaching. The Spanish

government’s delegate inCeuta, Francisco AntonioGonzález, said thatthe migrants were“aggressive” and beganthrowing rocks and otherobjects at authorities.Guardia officials said thatthey used their anti-riotgear “to dissuade” themigrants from rushing theborder, which was closedoff for 30 minutes.

As they reached thehighway, about 200 triedto swim around theseawall as the Moroccanauthorities begancontrolling the situation.

There is a deep dividebetween what the CatholicChurch says and what itsfollowers believe, a newinternational poll byBendixen & Amandi forthe Spanish-languageUS television networkUnivisión has revealed. Itshowed a huge gapbetween Church doctrineand many Spaniards’views on issues such assame-sex marriage, abortion, divorce andcontraception.

Only eight percent ofthe 1,000 respondents saidthey were against abortionin all cases, compared with88 per cent who support itin all or some situations. The Spanish EpiscopalConference recently saidthat “nobody has the right,in any circumstance, totake away the life of aninnocent human being.Any abortion law, nomatter how restrictive, would still be unfair.”

Evaristo Villar,spokesman for the

association RedesCristianas (ChristianNetworks), said he wasnot surprised: “Thebeginning of life is ascientific matter and therehas been no particularproblem with the currentlaw. We are in favour ofkeeping it, and againstthe proposed reform byJustice Minister Alberto

Ruiz Gallardón. TheChurch should get closerto today’s society and jointhe modern world.”

The survey also showedthat 64 per cent of SpanishCatholics approve of same-sex marriage, whichChurch leaders oppose.

In an interview with ElPais newspaper, Statesecretary for energyAlberto Nadal said thatthe auctions which setthe price of electricityfor homeowners willdisappear in April, to giveway to a “simpler” system.

Nadal explained thatthe variable part ofthe utility bill, whichrepresents 45 per cent ofthe total price to be paid

by consumers, with therest being a fixed rate, willbe set in accordance withthe average price on thewholesale market. He saidthis will “allow significantsavings for residentialconsumers”.

Under the previoussystem, the price of energywas established by anauction system that set aconstant price for threemonths. He said it was

"very complex, with lotsof intermediaries, and itgenerated significantsurcharges forconsumers”.

The public reactedangrily last December, when the auction lookedas if it would forceconsumer rates up by atleast 11 per cent forJanuary this year. Inresponse, the governmentopened an investigation

to determine whetherpower companies werecolluding to raise theprice of electricity butfound no evidence ofwrongdoing. However, thegovernment decreed thatthe price hike in Januarycould not exceed 2.3 percent.

The cost of electricityrose an average 4.5 percent last year, and hasgone up by nearly 80 per

cent in the past decade.Electricity bills in Spainare among the highest inEurope, with only the

people of Ireland andCyprus having to paymore.

The US is to make changes to the justice system to give greater legalrecognition to same-sex marriages. in a speech on Saturday at aHuman Rights Campaign dinner in new York, Attorney General ericHolder said the Justice Department had a role in "confrontingdiscrimination". Benefits will include couples being exempt fromhaving to testify against each other in court, and having equal rightsto visits in federal prisons. Same-sex marriages are currently legal in17 US states and in Washington DC. Other states grant some maritalbenefits to gay couples, while others have banned gay marriageoutright.

However, the new ruling will apply to federal matters in all states, whether or not they recognise gay unions, as long as the couplemarried legally in a state which does. Chad Griffin, president of theHuman Rights Campaign, said the announcement would "change thelives of countless committed gay and lesbian couples for the better".

Fast-food giant McDonald's has opened its first restaurant incommunist-controlled Vietnam. Hundreds of people queued for theopening in Ho Chi Minh, known as Saigon during the Vietnam War,where the US-backed government was based until it fell tocommunist forces 38 years ago. its owner, Henry nguyen, who ismarried to the daughter of Prime Minister nguyen Tan Dung, flippedburgers at a McDonald's restaurant while a teenager growing up inthe United States, where his family fled at the end of the war. He saidthat it had been his dream to open a McDonald's since returning toVietnam more than a decade ago. The move underlines Vietnam'shunger for Western consumer brands, Despite the Vietnameseeconomy's recent slowdown, foreign brands are popular among theyouthful population whose parents had few of the food and lifestyleoptions now available in the country. Starbucks, Subway, Burger King, and KFC all have a presence there.

The initiative to holdthe referendum wasspearheaded by the right-wing Swiss People's Party(SVP), amid increasingdebate across Europeabout migration and theimpact of free movementof people. Observers saidthe vote had shown uptraditional divisions, with

Vigilante groups paraded on Sunday through a stronghold of theKnights Templar drug cartel, Apatzingan in Michoacan state, backedby armoured vehicles and troops and shouting slogans beforeconvening at the city's main square. The groups began an offensivelast month aimed at ending the drug gang's activities in Michoacan. The government recently reached a pact with the groups, grantingthem temporary legal status by redefining them as Rural DefenceCorps. The Knights Templar cartel controls much of the drugtrafficking in the area, carrying out killings and kidnappings andextorting money from local people. Members of the patrols metgovernment forces on the outskirts of the city to discuss their nextsteps following Sunday's action. Vigilante leaders, joined by theofficial security forces and the army, have been searching house byhouse for leaders of the Knights Templar. More than 70,000 peoplehave died in drug related violence across Mexico in the past six years.

During the first three-dayceasefire in Homs, hundreds of civilians wereallowed to leave. Theevacuations took placeamid mortar fire andshooting, which both sidesblamed on each other.Activists say severalpeople were killed. The Syrian government

has acknowledged thatsome of those evacuatedfrom Homs on Sundaywere detained after theyleft. A Syrian informationministry spokesman toldreporters that 103"militants" had beendetained for securitychecks, and had sincebeen released. But otherreports suggest the menhave not been released, and are still beingdetained with theirfamilies. Meanwhile, government

and opposition negotiatorshave resumed peace talks

in Geneva. Analysts saythat little progress isexpected. The first roundof talks ended last monthwith no firm agreementsand both sides tradinginsults. French Foreign

Minister Laurent Fabiussaid France and othercountries would present aresolution at the UNcalling for greater accessfor humanitarian aid. Hetold French radio: "Itis absolutely scandalousthat there have been

discussions for quite awhile and that people arestill being starved everyday, and so along with anumber of other countrieswe will present aresolution at the UN alongthose lines." China andRussia did not turn up topreliminary discussions onthe draft. Syria's civil conflict has

claimed more than100,000 lives since 2011and has driven 9.5million people from theirhomes.

European Union tonegotiate with Cuba

The talks, which couldbegin as soon as nextmonth, will try to increasetrade and investment, andinclude a dialogue onhuman rights, officialssaid. EU foreign policychief Catherine Ashtonstressed that humanrights remained "at thecore" of its dealings withCuba.

The announcementcomes with Cuba engagedin an economic and socialreform process launchedby President Raul Castro.

In 1996, the EU agreedon a set of rules governingits relations with Cuba, called the CommonPosition, which states thatthe EU's objective is "toencourage a process oftransition to a pluralistdemocracy and respect forhuman rights and

fundamental freedoms, aswell as sustainablerecovery and improvementin the living standards ofthe Cuban people".

Despite the policy, morethan half of EU memberstates have bilateralagreements with Cuba.Cuba has rejected theCommon Position, arguingthat it constitutes aninterference in its internalaffairs.

The EU ambassadorto Havana, HermanPortocarero, said the talkscame in response to"serious" changes in Cuba, but he added that the EUhad a number of "redlines" in order for therelations to be normalised. These included such issuesas human rights and thepossibility for civil societygroups to have legal status.

The move indicates themost important diplomaticshift since the EU liftedsanctions against Cuba in2008.

The EU is Cuba'ssecond-biggest tradingpartner after Venezuela. Itrepresents a major sourceof investment, andhundreds of thousands ofEuropean tourists visit theisland every year.

Some 300 Syrians have fled Homs after both sides agreed toextend a three-day truce in the Old City, which has been undersiege for 18 months.

The EU has agreed to launch negotiations with Cuba aimed atrestoring full bilateral relations with the Communist-run island.

Rail links broken asUK is battered bymore storms Our television screenshave been filled withpictures of waves theheight of three storyhouses, destruction of seadefences and, particularlygraphic, both tracks of theWestcountry mainlinerailway suspended in mid-air in Dawlish, Devon,(pictured) for 30 metreswhere the sea has tornthrough the sea wall andtaken away the track bed.

The problem of floodingremains and where thewaters had receded theyhave risen yet again andthere remain seriousproblems in many partsof the country withnew flood warnings inplace.

At one stage there wereno railway services toExeter in the South Westof England because of

flooding on thetrack, and alandslip on anothertrack blocked analternative route.

And thereremain no servicesto Plymouth, alarge city which recentlyclosed its airport. It islinked to the rest ofBritain by a dualcarriageway road with aparticularly poor safetyrecord.

The Prince of Wales andPrime Minister DavidCameron have both beenon the Somerset Levels toview the damage anddiscuss the issues. Itappears that there is nowa consensus of opinionthat the levels will infuture have to be managedin the old way, whichinvolves dredging the

rivers, to allow a greatervolume of water to escapeto the sea. Unfortunatelywork cannot begin untilthe waters recede and itwill take some time.

Meanwhile theemergency services aredoing all they can inextremely difficultcircumstances. RoyalMarines from 40Commando are involved inthe operation, but thewater has nowhere to goand there is tangible senseof exasperation at thenews that there is morerain on the way.

Should wesmoke withkids in the car?I suspect many readerswill share my experienceof the prevalence of lungdisease resulting fromsmoking. I have peopleclose to me whose mobilityhas been seriouslycompromised.

And I recently bumpedinto a woman I workedwith in a newspaper officefor several years who toldme her specialist hadexplained to her thatalthough she did notsmoke her health had beenaffected by her husband’ssmoking.

I see Mayor of LondonBoris Johnson has now

teamed up with medicalprofessionals to urgeMembers of Parliament tovote to outlaw smoking incars carrying children.

The MPs are to be givena free vote on the issue. There are those whobelieve it will beunenforceable, and thecontinuing use of mobiletelephones in carssuggests they may have acase, but the ban is backedby cancer charities and itwould send a message toparents who smoke. If agood number of adults fallin line, then campaignerswill feel that a ban is fullyjustified.

Diabetesaffects six percent of adultsThe number of people withdiabetes in the UK nowstands at six per cent ofthe adult population. Alarge increase in type 2diabetes has been linkedto obesity and lack ofexercise.

Some of the increasecould be down to improveddiagnosis. Even so, it isrecognised that many

people still have thedisease without knowingit.

According to CardiffUniversity researchers theuse of insulin to controlthe disease has trebledover the last 20 years. The disease accounts for10p in every pound theNational Health Servicespends.

Britain’s waron wastedtax receiptsOne of Britain’s mostinfluential lobbying groupsin the UK is theTaxPayers’ Alliance, which campaigns for lowertaxes and generally hasthe ear of the coalitiongovernment.

It is interesting to notethat the organisation isnow suggesting that asmuch as one pound inevery six of public moneyspent is unwarranted, enough to wipe out the

country’s deficit withmoney to spare, it says.

In its latest pressrelease the alliance hasproduced a catalogue offailures to controlspending that makesembarrassing reading.

The great thing is thatGovernment really islistening. Last year itmade savings of £10 billionand is determined to domuch more to cut down onwaste in Whitehall.

“Water World”: That’s what they’re callingthe south of England nowCalls were being madeon Tuesday for theGovernment to divertsome of its £11 billionforeign aid budget to thosepeople in the UK hit by therecent floods. Parts of theThames Valley have beendeclared a “major incident”area by police.

Those hit by floods inthe West Country andThames Valley inparticular are saying thatif money was diverted evenfor a couple of months fromthe foreign aid budget, much could be done forthose whose homes havebeen wrecked by flooding.

People are angry thatdredging of rivers hasn’tbeen carried out “for years”and it is barely in livingmemory that people havehad to leave their homes –the last time there wassevere flooding to theregion was in the 1940s.Dredging of rivers andcanals was regularlycarried out in past yearsbut councils have

repeatedly blamed a lackof funds for not carrying onthese very necessaryworks.

Politicians

And the invasion of seniorpoliticians into flood-hitareas has started tobackfire, with localcommunities accusingthem of being little morethan 'flood tourists' insearch of a photoopportunity. Tory Memberof Parliament for ReadingWest, which is on theThames, Alok Sharmaaccused Labour leader EdMiliband of “failing to dohis homework” as he stoodin his wellingtons whileposing for photographs in astreet in Purley,Berkshire. He asked Mr.Miliband: “Why are youactually here? What I amhearing from localresidents is they are notactually interested inpeople just coming for aphoto opportunity talkingabout local issues when

they don't know what isgoing on locally. I wish youhad done a bit ofhomework before youturned up here.”

Residents in all areashave complained thatthere is not enough helpbeing sent to them andDefence Secretary PhilipHammond was beratedlive on TV by angryvolunteers demanding toknow why troops had notbeen sent in to help floodcommunities. The DefenceSecretary’s attempts toreassure people near theThames that he had putthe military on standby didlittle to reassure people inWraysbury.

During uncomfortableexchanges on television,Miss Burrows, a localvolunteer, said just eightpolice officers had been onduty to provide helpovernight.”We had eightpeople last night, eight. Weneed men. We needsandbags, we needsandbags, just let me

finish. We had sandbagsbeing delivered last nightthat were hijacked,” shesaid.

Mr Hammond tried tointerject that he had beentold an hour ago thatcombined police andmilitary team wascollecting sandbags fordistribution.

But she hit back: ‘That’sthe first we’ve heard of it.Who is unloading themwhen they get here? Whois co-ordinating them, there is nobody here co-ordinating those efforts, apart from us and we arenot being communicatedwith,” adding the entireoperation to close roadsand redirect traffic wasbeing run by volunteerswith little or no help fromthe emergency services.

“We are directing peoplewhere they need to go notthe police, we are directingthe police. We are directingthe parking officers of theroyal borough where theyneed to go to managetraffic. We are telling themwhere they need to closethe roads. We have gotrotas at the end of everysingle road managingtraffic telling them wherethey can and cannot go.Why are the military notdoing this, why is the EAnot doing this? These guyshave not slept… we aretired. We need people.”

Soldiers

On Tuesday at just after1pm it was reported thatsoldiers and firefighterswere rescuing people fromflooded homes on the

banks of the River Thamesfollowing the televisedinterview on Monday, andtroops have now beendeployed in Chertsey,Surrey, and in Wraysbury,Berkshire. Emergencyservices are going fromstreet to street, helpingpeople whose homes areunder threat from recordwater levels.

Stacks of sandbags –described as "like golddust" by one shopkeeper –have been brought in toshore up defences, whilepolice in Surrey havereleased £10m to tacklethe crisis.

There are fears up to4,000 more propertiescould be inundated, withfurther severe weatherforecast for the rest of theweek.

Evacuated

Residents have beenevacuated this week fromthe Surrey and Berkshireregions of Egham,Shepperton, Bourne Endand Wraysbury amongothers, including some ofthe Queen’s servants. HerPage, Paul Whybrew, 56,known as “Tall Paul” whowas seen in the spooffootage of Her Majestywalking along a corridorwith “James Bond” for theOlympics, and HeadHousekeeper, RachelGordon, 40, whose house isbuilt on a bridge close tothe Windsor Farm Shop, have both seen theirhistoric turreted grace andfavour houses in WindsorHome Park engulfed bythe rapidly rising watersand have had to de-campinto Windsor Castle until

the waters recede. Otherroyal staff who live on theestate had their road cutoff on Monday by the risingwaters. The castle itself ishighly unlikely to beaffected as it is built on ahill above the water.

People have beenblaming the bursting of thebanks of the Thames insome areas on authoritieswho have diverted waterinto the Jubilee River andthen into the Thames toalleviate rivers in otherareas. The Jubilee riverprotects 3000 propertiesand 500 businesses fromflooding when the riverThames rises by divertingwater along an elevenkilometre channel but it isbeing said that the sluicegates were opened despitethe Thames being in flooditself.

The Thames barrier, erected to stop centralLondon flooding, has beenclosed 29 times since thebeginning of the year.January was the wettestrecorded since 1766.

Memo fromMadridMartin DelfínWrites for the English language version of

The LocalVoice

Muriel Pilkington

The media was hyping it as themost important event since theexpulsion of Adam and Eve

from Eden but it turned out to be thebiggest non-event of the century. I'mreferring to Princess Cristina's longawaited appearance in court lastSaturday. Since the beginning of theweek, the newspapers and TVstations had it on the top of theirhype list – would she walk down the"alley of shame" – so-called becauseprotesters would be able to vent theirfrustration on her – or would shearrive by car, as the judge said shecould. Millions of Republicans, anti-monarchists, anti-system groups andanarchists were expected to turn upto make it a day the princess wouldnever forget. The media even toldhow all the stepladders in localhardware stores had sold out – tophotographers trying to get a betterview. (As it happened, they wastedtheir money.) The hype reached sucha pitch that I awaited the event withdread. Would she be assassinated, would I end up being ashamed – onceagain – of being a journalist?

Iusually work in the A.I.D. charityshop on Saturday mornings so Iwasn't able to watch it all live on

TV, but I knew I wouldn't be able toescape the riotous scenes completelybecause they would dominate thenews for the rest of the weekend. Ineedn't have worried. Cristinaarrived by car, which left her 11 stepsshort of the courthouse door (onejournalist kept count). Smilingbroadly, she nodded at thejournalists corralled behind barriersby a number of policemen – wholooked as if they were just waiting foran excuse to start wielding theirtruncheons.

However, the protesters – all200 or so of them – were keptwell away from the court on

the main street, although you couldvaguely hear them chanting theirslogans in the background. This wasjust before 10 am, and the day passedvery slowly until the princess madeher exit just after 6 pm, smiling andnodding at the journalists who bynow were almost dropping off tosleep. It had been a long and verybooooring day.

Now they're speculating abouthow many years her husbandwith the unpronounceable

name will get – one paper said theprosecutor was asking for a 40-yearjail sentence. Most of the otherpapers put it at 7 to 17 or 19 years.I'm sure King Juan Carlos hasalready told his daughter herhusband will have to spend time in

jail – throwing the wolf to the wolves– to stop the monarchy frombecoming even more unpopular.Whether Cristina's marriage willsurvive is another matter. However, now that the case is nearing its endthe media are suddenly discoveringaspects of the princess's characterwhich seem to have been kept underwraps. One online newspaper, ElConfidencial Digital, now says it wasCristina who set her cap at he withthe unpronounceable name, not theother way round. And others arehinting that her disarming smilemasks an arrogant, wilful nature.Whatever. The judge is expected towrap up the case by as early as April,so we'll just have to wait and see howthis little drama ends.

‘Democratic freedom'

AMadrid court has ruled that aprotest against home evictionsheld outside the home of

Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Sáenzde Santamaría in April of last yearshould be seen as a “commonmechanism of democraticparticipation of civil society and anexpression of the pluralism of thepublic ." The judges said that whileno warning of the hastily arrangedprotest in the capital – a practiceknown as an escrache, a word coinedin Argentina – had been given, it wasalso true that there were no violentincidents during the 20-minutedemonstration. They said the protestcould not be considered as a threat tothe minister because there were noindications that the protestersintended to harm her or her family, consisting of a mother who looksafter her two year old son while sheand her husband are at work. I can'thelp wondering if the ruling wouldhave been different if the escrachemob had belonged to the PartidoPopular and the victim had belongedto the Socialist Party or the UnitedLeft.

This was what the Mayor ofValladolid, Francisco JavierLeón de la Riva, wanted to ask

Isabel Valledecabres, one of the threejudges who issued the ruling. In thepast, she has been adviser to threeSocialist ministers and she was putforward for a position a substitutejudge on the General JudiciaryCouncil – by the Socialist Party. Shealso helped draw up the Socialist'sabortion law. How can you take anyruling by such an obviously sectarianjudge seriously? Unfortunately thereare too many of them in Spain.

Royal painsBiggest non-show on earth

Not since President RonaldReagan uttered his celebrated“I don’t remember” statement

when he was asked in 1986 about theapproval of an illegal arm sale to Iranhas there been such a famous memorylapse as we saw with Princess Cristinaon Saturday. No one actually believesthat she didn’t know where herhusband, Iñaki Urdangarin, wasgetting all his money – she definitelyhasn’t been sleeping with the enemy.

But then again the outcome of thecourt hearing was no shocker. Itwasn’t really expected that

Princess Cristina would be upfrontabout her personal finances when shetestified before a Palma de Mallorcajudge, who has opened a preliminarytax fraud and money-launderinginvestigation against her. The sixhours she spent in a closed-door sessiondid nothing to clear up the battery ofquestions Judge José Castro fired atKing Juan Carlos’s youngest daughterduring an historic courtroomappearance. (It was the first time thata member of the royal family had goneto court for a criminal inquiry.) Thishearing only served two purposes: ithelped to demonstrate how theprincess insists on keeping up herstubborn arrogance, and it providedfodder for local and internationaljournalists who huddled outsidewaiting for real courtroom drama thatnever unfolded.

After initially fighting thesubpoena to appear before thejudge, who has been honing in

on the business dealings of herhusband, the Infanta decided – withmuch pressure from the royal family –to come forward and answer all thecirculating questions concerningwhether she took advantage of publicmoney that was allegedly diverted toher spouse’s businesses. For nearlythree years, Castro has been lookinginto allegations that Urdangarinembezzled some €6 million he receivedfrom the regional governments ofBalearic Islands and Valencia toorganise a series of tourismconferences and sports events through

a non-profit entity he set up with hispartner, Diego Torres. The NóosInstitute had actually been conceivedby Torres in 1999, but didn’t take offuntil Urdangarin, his former studentat Madrid’s ESADE business school, used his royal connections to attractinterest. The regional governmentsgave Nóos large chunks of moneywithout formalising bids. Prosecutorsbelieve that Urdangarin commingledthe public funds given to his non-profitNGO with his private businessaccounts including Aizoon, the realestate firm he co-owned with his wife.

After subsequent police and taxinspector enquiries, JudgeCastro decided to call in the

princess when he was given evidencethat she had purportedly charged awide-range of personal expenses to theAizoon accounts. These included billsfor communion receptions, birthdayparties and dance classes. Her taxstatements purportedly show that shedidn’t report all the income she mayhave received from Aizoon. Castro’sfirst attempt to call her in to testify lastApril was overruled by a Mallorcaprovincial court panel, which left openthe door for the judge to continue tolook at her tax records. When askedabout her spending, Cristina said shecouldn’t remember submitting any ofthe bills to Aizoon and stated that shetrusted her husband’s handling of allthe accounts.

It took her more than a week toprepare for her testimony withlawyers from a very influential

buffet in Barcelona. Those attorneys nodoubt received a generous windfall fortheir advice in telling her to play dumb.No doubt, however, the preparationwas geared on the psychological factor;the lawyers didn’t want her to breakdown or lose her cool with the toughquestions she faced.

Royal household sources have saidthat it was Cristina who hadbeen adamant throughout all

this time not to take the stand. Thisnever set well with her family andcreated a lot of tension with herbrother Prince Felipe and his wifeLetizia. The king was also convincedthat Judge Castro would remove theprincess from the list of about 40official targets in the Nóos inquiry afterthe royal daughter’s appearance. Butthe judge left the courtroom moreconfused than ever while the princessdid nothing to help clear up the matteror take a load off her family’s backs.

Author Marion Leigh donatesantique Erard harp to the MuseoInteractivo de la Música de Málaga

After a long journey thatbegan in London on 3rdNovember 1819, theantique harp arrived earlythis month at Málaga’sMuseo Interactivo de laMúsica. The magnificentinstrument made bySebastian Erard inOctober 1819, is the latestaddition to the museumthanks to a donation madeby author and harpistMarion Leigh. Prior to thiskind gift, the museum hadthree pianos also from thehouse of Erard in itscollection.

There are many detailsthat make this animportant piece with animpressive provenance: onone side there is theinscription: “TO THEROYAL FAMILY. HisMost Christian Majestythe King of France andH.I.M. the Emperor of allthe Russias”, which leadsexperts to think that theinstrument was dedicatedto royalty. This theory isfurther strengthened bythe fact that SebastiánErard’s relationship withthe royal house before theFrench Revolution was

well known, as well as bythe intricacy of thedetailed engraving of birdson the noble wood.

The harp was given toMarion Leigh as abirthday present in 1995,when she was living inBaltimore. It had beenfound in poor condition ina barn in Pennsylvania,U.S.A., and partiallyrestored by a colleague ofMarion’s husband. It stillhas a lovely sound, although only the topthree octaves can beplayed because tighteningthe bass strings would puttoo much stress on theharp’s very old neck.

Information aboutMarion Leigh

To date, theyhave covered nearly fortythousand kilometresexploring the Great Lakesand the Eastern Seaboardof the United States andCanada.

Marion’s first novel,The Politician’s Daughter, was released in Spain inJune 2011. It is anadventure thrillerfeaturing Marine UnitSergeant Petra Minx ofthe Royal CanadianMounted Police.

Petra is called in toinvestigate when EmilyMortlake, the daughter ofa high-flying Torontopolitician, goes missingafter taking a summer jobaboard megayacht Titaniain the Mediterranean.Despite the misgivings ofher mentor, Tom Gilmore,Petra poses as a studentand joins the crew of theyacht. She is quickly

drawn into the glamorousworld of Titania’s owner, the ruthless andcharismatic Don León. Asshe follows Emily’s trailfrom Monte Carlo toMallorca and on to theCosta del Sol and Morocco,Petra struggles withconflicting emotions in herrelentless quest to uncover

the truth before it is toolate.

Nazli says: A walk onthe beach is one of thejoys of having a dog inthe Costa del Sol. But becareful if your dog tendsto eat things he finds. After every storm fishhooks may wash up onthe beach. If they stillcontain bait the dog willpick it up and swallowthe hook. You will seethe fish line hanging outof the mouth. DO NOTpull the line! Attach theline to the dog’s collarand seek veterinaryhelp. Prevent thishappening by putting amuzzle on your dog.

Anna says: Whenchoosing a dog school, choose wisely! Go andvisit the school and talkto the trainer and otherstudents before youdecide. When training adog it is very importantthat you believe in whatyou are doing and feelcomfortable during theclasses. Training issupposed to be fun forboth you and your dog.

Celia says: Is your catgoing bald? It could befleas. Some cats are soallergic to a single fleabite that they pull ornibble their fur in thisarea. Cats also do this ifthey have a painful area,if they are allergic tosome forms of food, or ifthey are ill. Some catseven pull their fur out ofstress. So take your catto the vet and discuss theproblem.

On this week’s show wediscussed stress – ‘Doesyour pet follow youaround the home andeven to the toilet?’ If yesif you’re honest (bigsmile) simply startclosing doors behind you.

Our pets suffer when weleave them andespecially when they gointo kennels. My adviceis to put your puppy intokennels for the day oncea month for the first 6months – this way yourpet will suffer very littlestress. If you can whynot put a video on whenyou go out, that will tellall!

I noticed that Boy Boykept nibbling his rearend near his tail. I brushhim every day using aZoom Groom and keptsearching the area andcould see it was getting alittle red, in fact hestarted to cry whennibbling it but I couldsee nothing. Nazlirecommended a fleatreatment and within 24hours he stopped biting. Now I recommend a fleatreatment even if yourdog does not have fleas,as a preventative. Moreabout fleas on mywebsite.

Another smart animateddelight from Dreamworks, which offers plenty ofaction for the kids and lotsof gags aimed at keepingthe grown-ups amused, somark this one down asperfect family fun.

Mr Peabody (Burrell) isa talking dog who is thecleverest being on theplanet who happens tohave a human adopted sonSherman (Charles). MrPeabody has used his owninvention, the WABACtime travel machine, totake Sherman on trips tolearn about the past in aWayne’s World/Back toThe Future riff but thingsget out of hand whenSherman, making amendsfor fighting at school withclassmate Penny, showsoff the WABAC and beforeyou can say space-timecontinuum the pair are offon a trip through time.

But of course it’s notthat simple and theuniverse is threatened bytheir actions so MrPeabody and the kids findthemselves in AncientEgypt, the Trojan War,the Renaissance andRevolutionary France, as

they try to put order backinto the world.

It’s all great fun, withthe usual impeccableDreamworks standard ofanimation and a wittyscript, and has wonplaudits from the critics.

Sometimes your heart just can’t take it, you are pushed until you reach your limitof what you feel you want to emotionally endure. You are possibly experiencingextreme diversity in your life when the pendulum seems to swing from oneextreme to another, emotionally you can feel as though you are on a roller coasterride. Massive changes usually occur under these conditions but rest assured thata gap is on its way where you will be able to settle and recuperate.

Your head has had to turn and face the things that you do not wish to deal withbut now that your ruler is moving direct again you are some more able to singwith the fairies. A sense of optimism and enthusiasm for the future inspires youto look with joy at the horizon. Take some time to heal the past, with someonewho means a great deal to you, as there is no real moving forward until ithappens.

There is support around you right now not only from those who are physicallythere but from the intangible levels too. You may be able to either seesomething or someone clearly for the first time, in a way that you haveoverlooked, or an aspect of your health may come to your attention. At thispoint you could slip into moments of deep thought as your mind is processingall the information it has been collecting over the past few months.

Let the tears flow Cancer, let it go. You are feeling sensitive on these days, evenmore so than usual and you feel like you could cry at a drop of a hat. What youreally need is some peace and quiet; people may be tugging at you from alldirections and demanding your attention. Take some well needed space, a bitof time out from it all, and this will restore some sense of internal balance andstrengthen your resources.

A wave of intense feeling is running through your veins and this will tell you allyou need to know to proceed in a certain direction. However, if you are lookingexternally for feedback or validation from others it will be a waste of time. All youneed to know is inside of you. You are about to enter a brand new life cycle thatwill prove to be very different from all the others, there will be hesitancy on yourpart as you know there will be no turning back once you begin down this road.

This week ahead can be full of ups and downs, if there has been a repeatingtheme in your life, then this theme is likely to occur again but this time you havea chance to rewrite the outcome if you wish and take control of the cycle. Getsome well needed rest when you can as this can be a strange but amusing time, having its tragic moments and its humorous ones. Once things start moving thenthey are likely to really take off so make the most of any quiet times you get.

Significant personal advancements start to happen and life seems to moveprogressively onwards. Everything seems to fall into place automatically, thebarriers have lifted and it is time to really step things up and get it all moving.Others are likely to sense your energy and look to you for leadership andguidance as you appear to be able to weigh up the odds and make decisionsbased on common sense and a logical approach.

Love is on your mind and is a serious business, perhaps there is someone in your lifethat you can trust for the long haul and somewhere inside you, you know this is true.Perhaps you are thinking of allowing yourself to commit and take this relationshipto another level of trust. You hold the cards at the moment and the timing anddeliverance is all down to you. You have passed through the valley of darkness latelyand now you are emerging stronger and more determined than ever.

This can be an unusually nostalgic time and you will want to dig deep into yourpast and the memories of something significant loom larger than usual in yourmind. Emotionally you could feel all over the place and you will want to indulgeyourself in these feelings for now. Everything seems to have slowed down andprogress can look as though it has groundto a halt, use this time to consideryour options and choices very carefully.

Relationship dynamics are the theme of the week and you wish to clear thedecks in order to eliminate all that does not serve you in your life. Everyonehas their limits and you have nearly reached yours, in one key area, you knowthings have to change. This week prepare yourself for the changes that areabout to begin as they are likely to be beneficial once they kick in. You will bepushing the re-set button and setting the criteria back on track.

Commitments and career are the areas that are highlighted for you this week, there is likely to be some sort of recovery either on the practical level as in debtsdue to you come forth, or on a deeper level where you feel that you get a senseof identity back. There are opportunities to recover a more sustainable basethat reflects a more natural expression of you. Demand what you are worth,be more self reliant and get those personal talents working for you.

With any challenging experience, there is always a way through, this week youmay need to ask yourself why you were put in a certain position in the firstplace. Events are likely to get interesting and you could hear people say thingsthat you did not expect, powerful personal temptations are likely too; however, this is a perfect time for helping and assisting others. Pay close attention to thedetails, then you will not overlook anything important.

I'm assuming by now you all know your numbers. Or are some of you still craning yournecks to read the till at the check-out? With numbers, like everything else, it is just amatter of practise, practise, practise. Try saying prices to yourself as you go about yourshopping.

So with the cardinal (normal) numbers under our belts it is now time to tackle the ordinals (the ones that tell you the order/sequence of things.) They come in masculineand feminine forms Primero/a - First, Segundo/a - Second, Tercero/a - Third, Cuarto/a- Fourth, Quinto/a - Fifth, Sexto/a - Sixth, Septimo/a - Seventh, Octavo/a - Eighth,Noveno/a - Ninth, Decimo/a - Tenth.

It is worth remembering that speaking about dates, people use the normal, cardinalnumbers. So, the seventh of February is el siete de febrero, 17th March - el diecisiete demarzo, 9th May - el nueve de mayo, 4th December - el cuatro de diciembre and so on.However, there are many times that it is useful to know the ordinals at least up to 10.

Nearly a decade ago, researchers in Bostondecided to find out if oldermen who were not in goodshape could benefit fromdaily doses of testosterone. They recruited severalhundred volunteers andgave them the hormone ora placebo.

Those takingtestosterone got stronger, compared with those

Since then studies oftestosterone treatmenthave produced mixedresults. A 2012 study ofveterans aged 40 and over

Testosterone’s benefits and risks

High-dose vitamin C canboost the cancer-killingeffect of chemotherapyin the lab and in mice, researchers at theUniversity of Kansas havesuggested, after tests withmice and patients withadvanced ovarian cancer.

They said that given byinjection, it couldpotentially be a safe, effective and low-costtreatment for ovarian andother cancers, and calledfor large-scale governmentclinical trials. Thelarge pharmaceuticalcompanies are unlikely torun trials, as vitaminscannot be patented.Vitamin C has long beenused as an alternativetherapy for cancer.

In the 1970s, chemistLinus Pauling reportedthat vitamin C givenintravenously waseffective in treatingcancer. However, clinicaltrials of vitamin C givenby mouth failed to

replicate the effect, andresearch was abandoned. It is now known that thehuman body quicklyexcretes vitamin C when itis taken by mouth.

However, theresearchers said thatwhen given by injectionvitamin C is absorbed intothe body, and can killcancer cells withoutharming normal ones. After injecting vitamin Cinto human ovarian cancercells in the lab and intomice, they found ovariancancer cells were sensitiveto vitamin C treatment, but normal cells wereunharmed.

The treatment workedin tandem with standardchemotherapy drugs toslow tumour growthin mouse studies.Meanwhile, a small groupof patients reported fewerside-effects when givenvitamin C alongsidechemotherapy.

indicated for men withabnormally lowtestosterone levels, acondition calledhypogonadism, doctorshave been prescribing it tomany men with normallevels.

The researchers foundthat for people with trulylow testosterone levels, thebenefits outweigh therisks "but for millions ofothers, it’s in the samecategory as snake oil”.

With the loss of satellite UKterrestrial channels inSpain, many people will belooking at the variouspossibilities of getting themback.

The most popular methodwill be IPTV which willenable the various televisionchannels to be downloadedvia the Internet.

If one has a “smart”television, then the Internetcan be either directlyconnected by cable to thetelevision or wirelessly viaWIFI.

However, if a householddoes not have a smart TVbut has a TV that has anHDMI connection, then it ispossible to buy a set-top boxthat will connect to theInternet and output to theTV via the HDMIconnection.

This will probably be themost common method andthere will be manycompanies trying to sellthese set-top boxes.

Whatever method is chosenit will now cost money to

obtain the UKTV channels. It will be necessary to buy aset-top box and pay a“content provider” amonthly or yearlysubscription to provide theUKTV channels. This willbe in addition to paying foran Internet that is ofsufficient speed to ensure agood quality of service andpicture.

However, there is a muchcheaper way of obtaining theUKTV channels and will notnecessitate using a contentprovider and that is by useof a very small computercalled a Raspberry PI whichwas originally developed forschools to allow students tolearn about computers andcomputer programming.

Since its inception, theRaspberry PI has proved sopopular that it is now usedfor a whole multitude of usesand one only has to “Google”Raspberry PI or look onYouTube to discover moreabout this excellentcomputer, which is fullycapable of high qualityvideo.

It is about the size of a credit

card, and costs around £35from Amazon or Ebay. Its“operating system” is calledXBMC and allows the userto not only watch literallyhundreds of movies, including new releases, forfree, (which other set-topboxes will not) but alsoenables all UKTV channelsand radio stations to bedownloaded for free.

It connects to the Internet, either by cable or wirelesslyand its output is via anHDMI connecter to thehome television. (Like allInternet services the qualityis dependent upon the speedof the Internet and theservice provided by theISP, Telefonica, Telitec,Wifinetspain, Mowitel etc.).

At the moment I amwatching BBC news andlast night I watched a newrelease film called The BookThief.

Editor says: This sounds likea good idea but PLEASEcheck with a reputableprovider what will and willnot work for you in the areawhere you live – beforepaying out any money.

What a shame. With the BBC and ITV allgoing off and not so muchchoice about what to watchon the telly you’d think

that we would allappreciate the localentertainers a bit more. There were a few of uswent to see a singer in alocal bar last week and it

was such a shame to seepeople at the bar behavinglike morons. At times we could hardlyhear the singer over themshouting theirconversations to each otherand, why they would thinkthe rest of us would wantto hear what they had tosay is utterly beyond me.Perhaps the people makingall the noise will find overthe coming weeks andmonths a way toappreciate what theseartistes do and learn a fewmanners when it comes toruining other people’snights out.The artiste in questioncarried on through it alllike the true trouper he isbut at the end of theevening, all those that hadtravelled to see his showwere very disappointed. So please, if there’s a showon and people areobviously wanting to enjoyit, shut up and have somemanners in future.

Orion dominates thewinter sky with his ‘bowtie’ or ‘butterfly’ shape of

stars that are some of thebrightest stars in the sky. Atthis time of year Orion can beseen rising in the east at duskand during the night he standsupright passing right acrossthe southern part of the sky.He is one of the moreinteresting constellations andeach star has its own story totell.

Starting with the brightred coloured star in theupper left-hand corner –

this is Betelgeuse a super-sized red giant. Betelgeuse is sohuge that if it were placedwhere our Sun is then its outer edgewould reach almost to the planet Saturn.Betelgeuse is a ‘live fast die young’ typeof star. It is only about 10 million yearsold compared to the Sun’s six billionyears, but its massive size has caused itto use up much of its fuel and it isexpected to explode as a supernova anytime between now and one million yearshence. It may have already exploded andas it is 640 light years away we aresimply waiting for the image to get here.

Move to the top right-hand starBellatrix; a blue/white colouredstar about 250 light years away

and over eight times bigger than thesun. Continue clockwise to the bottomright hand star, this is Rigel a superbright star almost 900 light years away.Rigel is possibly 100 thousand timesmore luminous than the Sun and about75 times the radius. It is the sixthbrightest star in the night sky. Itsdazzling blue/white colour tellsastronomers that it is a very hot starwith a surface temperature of more than12,0000 C.

The faint star in the bottom lefthand corner is called Saith thatcomes from an Arabic name

meaning sword of the giant. Saith isabout 650 light years away, which isalmost the same distance as Betelgeuse. From Saith Betelgeuse must be anamazing sight at only 10 light yearsaway from it.

Now look at the three stars in aperfect straight line crossing thecentre of Orion. From left to right

they are called Alnitak, Alnilam andMintaka. Although these three starsappear to be equal in brightness anddistance they are massively different insize, brightness and distance from us, itis merely a line of sight effect thatcauses them to appear as Orion’s belt.

If you look very carefully belowOrion’s belt where his sword wouldbe hanging you will notice that the

stars here seem a little fuzzy round the

edges. This is the famous M42 OrionNebula, a huge gas cloud where newstars are being formed. Throughbinoculars the nebula is quite clear butwith a telescope it is a splendid sightwith hundreds of stars shining throughthe cloud. The Orion nebula is 1500 lightyears away and about 24 light yearsacross. It is the closest star formingregion to us and probably one of themost studied and photographed deep skyobjects by amateur and professionalastronomers alike.

Now that you can recognise Orionyou can use his figure to guideyou to other stars and

constellations. Follow the three stars inhis belt downward to the left and youwill come across the brightest star in thenight sky, Sirius in the constellation ofCanis Major, the great dog of Orion.Sirius is one of the closest stars to us atonly 8.6 light years away it also happensto be twice the size of the Sun and 25times brighter. Sirius was a veryimportant star to the ancient Egyptiansas its first appearance before sunriseheralded the annual flooding of the Nile. The season following the star'sappearance came to be known as theDog Days of summer.

Follow the stars of Orion’s beltupward this time to find Aldebranthe red eye of Taurus the Bull

bearing down on Orion. Use yourbinoculars to scan the area aroundAldebran to see the Hyades cluster ofhundreds of stars an amazingsight!

Can I say a big thank you to thestaff and pupils of Swans Schooland the English International

College for a lovely two days spent lastweek talking to the children. See youagain next year.

Happy Stargazing.

StargazingBy Ken Campbell

Orion, e Hunter Of all the constellations in the night sky the most easilyrecognised must be Orion, The Hunter.

The 2014 Bathurst 12Hours took place inAustralia last weekend atthe Mount PanoramaCircuit. Ferrari took thewin with a thrilling finishin what was a side-by-siderace to the finish lineagainst a Mercedes-BenzSLS AMG GT3 belongingto HTP Motorsports.

The team of CraigLowndes, Peter Edwards,John Bowe and Mika Saloin the Ferrari 458 GT3were the victors. Theoutcome though was notresolved coming to the lastcorner, but the second-

placed HTP Mercedes-Benz SLS of MaximilianBuhk, Thomas Jaeger andHarold Primat missed outby just 0.4 of a second.

Three seconds coveredthe first four places. Thirdwas another Mercedes, theErebus car of WillDavison, Jack Le Brocqand Greg Crick, which justheld out the surprisepacket McLaren MP4-12Cof pet-food magnate TonyQuinn, his son Klark, ScotAndrew Kirkaldy and thenew Mount Panorama laprecord-holder, Kiwi Shanevan Gisbergen with a time

of 2.03.85 – a touch fasterthan the pole time.

Lowndes has fiveBathurst 1000 trophiesalready on top of the 2014Bathurst 12-Hour trophyhe won on Sunday. Thesecond placed HTPMotorsports team made ita great spectacle with animpressive performance, especially from theiryoung driver Buhk. Thirdin this Class A was alsoanother Mercedes-BenzSLS AMG GT of ErebusMotorsports. They foughtback several laps to thetop after suffering damagedue to a contact. Thedamage resulted in the carbeing faster on thestraights and slower at thetops which was consideredan advantage.

The race continuedfrom dawn to dusk withcrashes and incidents inabundance, and anunwanted appearance by asuicidal kangaroo. The

kangaroo was hit afterjust 15 minutes of the6.15am start time, bythe Erebus Mercedesdriven by Brocq, andthen the followingLamborghini Gallardo, which was damagedbeyond repair and outof the contest.

The young GermanBuhk made a couple ofadventurous lunges atLowndes in the finalminutes, but the wilyAustralian, winner of fiveBathurst 1000s, didn'tfalter.

''I was running theinside lines, and makingthe Merc take the longway around,'' saidLowndes of the tense lastfew minutes. It was hisfourth 12 Hour start, andfirst win.

There was a scarymoment for the winningteam mid-race when vanGisbergen fired the

McLaren under the Salo-driven Ferrari enteringthe sweeper at theMcPhillamy Park bend. The two slapped panels atabout 200km/h. Duringthe third hour of the race, the Clearwater Ferrariof Hiroshi Hamaguchiclipped a wall, broke itsradiator, and then spun onits own fluid at the super-fast McPhillamy Parkbend.

The much fanciedNISMO Nissan GTRdriven by Katsumasa

Chiyo (and earlier putamong the top three by V8Supercars driver RickKelly) hit the same patchof fluid and careeredheavily into the Ferrari. Itwas turned into anunrecognisable pile ofscrap metal. The teamthough made it clear thatthey will be back nextyear. The feeling was, thiswas one of the mostexciting Bathurst's formany years, and nextyear’s dates have alreadybeen fixed 6-8th Feb 2015.One for the diary.

Ferrari snatch a thrilling Bathurst 12 Hour

Aston Martinrecall will cost£1.5 millionAston Martin estimatesthat its expanded recall ofaccelerator pedals in 17,590sports cars will result in amaterial added cost of 1.5million pounds. The firstrecall for the problem wasannounced last May andwas expanded in Octoberand expanded again lastWednesday to include mostof the sports cars built byAston Martin since late2007.

Aston Martin said in astatement last week that itdetermined the cost of therecall in late November2013. The estimate does notinclude the potential cost ofmoving production of thepedal. Their spokeswomanSarah Calam said thecompany plans to shiftproduction of the pedalarms from China to the UK"as soon as possible" in2014.

The cost of the recall is ofgreat interest because AstonMartin has struggled tofund the development of arange of new vehicles whilerivals like Bentley, ownedby Volkswagen Group, and

Rolls-Royce, owned byBMW Group, have theability to draw on theresources of their parentfirms. Of the Aston Martincars affected in the recall,7,271 are in Europe and5,001 in the United States,Calam said. The companysells cars in 41 countries.

The cars are beingrecalled from model years2008 through 2014,according to documentsfrom the U.S. NationalHighway Traffic SafetyAdministration.

Aston Martin found thatShenzhen Kexiang MouldTool Co. Ltd., a Chinesesubcontractor that moldsthe affected acceleratorpedal arms, was usingcounterfeit plastic materialsupplied by SyntheticPlastic Raw Material Co.Ltd. of Dongguan, accordingto documents filed with theNHTSA.

Calam said there hadbeen no reports of accidentsor injuries related to theissue, adding that 22 failedparts had been reported.

SepangMotoGPtest:Crutchlow‘no-one isnearMarquez’

Casting his eye overthe Sepang MotoGPtimesheets, new Ducatisigning Cal Crutchlow wasclear that world championMarc Marquez holds asignificant advantage overthe other riders.

Honda star Marquezleft the test with a best laptime just 0.194s ahead ofYamaha's Valentino Rossi, with the top four riders allbreaking the two-minutebarrier. However it was

Marquez's final day racesimulation that revealedhis true advantage.“Everyone says how closeit is at the top. Vale, Jorge,Dani – everyone is close toMarc as such (over onelap),” said Crutchlow. “Buthis race simulation, theyare 20 seconds off. I cantell you that now.”

Even taking intoaccount factors such as thedifferent time of day wheneach rider completed their

long run: “At the end of therace they would be at leastten seconds off. It putseverything in perspective.Marc is just going so well,”said Crutchlow.

At Ducati, Crutchlow'steam-mate AndreaDovizioso led the way withseventh place courtesy of a2m 0.370s lap time. Thatwas 0.8s slower thanMarquez, but is thought tobe Ducati's best everSepang lap.

Continued from last week

VarianceIf there’s one reason I hearmore than any other for notplaying 6-max holdem, it’sthat the variance is toohigh. Some people simplydon’t want to endure thedownswings associatedwith a higher variancegame of poker.

While it is true that yourstandard deviation per 100hands will be higher in 6-max than full ring, thisshould not be a factor inwhether you play the gameor not. We are supposed tobe playing for the long term!If you are adequatelybankrolled, then you will dobetter playing in the gamewhich earns you the mostmoney per hour, regardlessof the variance. Remember, variance doesn’t alter yourmean winrate, just yourspread of results aroundthat winrate. This meansabove it too! Most playersforget this. When you havea monster session andfinish up 6 – 8 buyins, doyou put it all down toplaying well? Or are youaware enough to be able tosay “In that session I ranway above my averagewinrate due to variance.”

Do not limp preflopThis is the only hard and

fast rule I am going to giveyou in this article. Whileit’s possible to employa profitable strategyinvolving preflop limping,it’s extremely difficult tobalance and relies on expert

post flop play. For the vastmajority of players, it’ssimply better to raise anypot you want to enter first.Three or four times the bigblind will do it. If you limp, not only will you be isolatedout of position a lot, it willbe more difficult to build bigpots with your monsters. Italso makes hand reading anightmare, especially if youlet the blinds in for free.

C – BettingC-betting is the bread

and butter of 6-maxholdem. If you raisedpreflop and get one or twocallers, you will be bettingmost flops whether you hitor miss. These bets shouldbe somewhere between halfand full pot size. How tochoose what size in thisrange depends on a numberof things:Flop textureNumber of opponentsOpponents’ tendenciesBalanceOwn hand strength

C-betting is a topic thatrequires an article in itselfto cover properly, so I won’tattempt to reproduce thathere. Just be aware thatpart of the reason you areraising so much preflop is totake the pot down oftenwith a c-bet on the flop.

PositionMost players know that

position is to youradvantage in NL Holdem, but they simply don’t use itas relentlessly as theyshould. When you haveposition, especially on the

button, you should beraising a lot of pots. Ona tight/weak table, it’sdifficult to go too far withthis. Raise any limped orunopened pot on the buttonwith all but the trashiest ofhands.

Position can be used toexploit different opponenttypes in various ways. Ifyou have a weak TAG onyour left who calls from theblinds too much but givesup too easily post flop, youcan raise all sorts of handsfrom the button and cutoff. You can then applypressure and 2 or 3 barrelhim depending on thesituation, making him laydown the vast majority ofhis range. If you are playingwith a loose passive fish onyour right, you can alsoisolate with a wide range.Unless he picks up a bighand, he’ll mostly becheck/calling to the river, allowing you to choosewhere to value bet, andwhere to check behind. These are the sorts ofsituation where positiongives you a huge advantage,so make sure most of yourhands are played inposition.

Away-day blues for MalagaAfter the great result lastweekend over Sevilla,Malaga travelled toMadrid in search ofanother vital 3 points.

Malaga had a muchchanged team withAngeleri, Samu, Perezand Morales all in thestarting line-up. Thegame started with Rayodominating play withMalaga showing little upfront, and it was nosurprise to see Malaga fallone behind after 25minutes. A great run byFalque who beat twoMalaga defenders withconsumate ease ended inhim slotting home frominside the box.

Three minutes later itwent from bad to worse asa hopeful shot fromArbilla outside the boxtook a wicked deflection toleave Caballero rooted tothe spot.

The first half ended

with Malagathree downand a mandown, asSanchez washarshlypenalised forpullingLarriveydown in thebox. A secondyellow for theMalaga defender andLarrivey stepped up andscored from the resultingspot kick, (pictured withteam mate Falque right).

Malaga made changesat half time, Casado on forhis debut with Darderand that gave a littleimprovement.

Arambat had a chancefor Malaga but it was wellsaved by Ruben. On 65minutes it was four forRayo as bad defendingled to Falque skippingthrough to slot home.Iakovenko coming on forhis debut at the expense

of Juanmi gave Malaga aconsolation goal with 15minutes to go firing homefrom outside the box. Butit was too little too late asMalaga were thoroughlyhammered by the teamwho sit 2nd bottom in LaLiga. This result leavesMalaga anxiously lookingover their shoulder at therelegation places.

Next game is onMonday at 10pm againstReal Sociedad, anothermust win game.

Snowboarding commentarydraws complaints but othersthought it excitingMore than 300 peoplecomplained to the BBCover the quality ofcommentary during thesnowboardingslopestyle finalat the WinterOlympics. Itwas thanks tosome kind localswho had posted onFacebook that you could getBBC channel RB2 showingthe Olympics that I waseven watching it. And Ihave to say I thoroughlyenjoyed the wholeexperience. Slopestyle is anew and relatively youngsport even though GreatBritain's first Olympicmedal on the snow was wonby 33 year old Jenny Jones(pictured) at the event inSochi on Sunday, whereshe took the bronze.

Friend and fellow Britishsnowboarder Aimee Fullerhad joined Ed Leigh andTim Warwood in thecommentary box. Fullerhad takenpart inthe

earlystagesof theeventbutfailedto make the final, afterwhich she was invited intothe presentation booth.Viewers complained that

they cheered when Jones'scompetitors fell, and thatthe commentary was of alow standard. Fuller was

heard cheering when thefinal competitor, Austria'sAnna Gasser, fell, meaningthat Jones would clinch the

bronze medal. (NowI have to admit sodid I! )Fuller then said:

"Are we supposedto do that?Probably not."All three

commentatorsbegan crying whenit became clear thatJones had won amedal. There were many

parts of the commentarythat the wife and I didn'tunderstand, but theenthusiasm was infectiousand the pair of us werewhooping along with them.
