Words To Know

Turning point – is a specific, very important moment when something begins to change.

Neolithic Revolution – the change from a nomadic lifestyle

of hunting and gathering to farming and living in a village.

Domestication – the act of changing a wild plant or animal so it can be grown or raised by humans.

Permanent Settlements – places where people live for long periods of time, possibly for their whole lives.

Subsistence farming – growing enough food just to feed your family.

Words To Know

Surplus farming – when farmers sell any extra crops they

grew after their families have enough to eat.

Social Classes – dividing people into classes based on status or importance (rich vs poor).

Specialization of Labor – when everyone has a different job.

Let’s Set The Stage…

The Neolithic Revolution was a turning point in history that changed the way people lived their lives. People went from hunting and gathering for food to agriculture (farming). Instead of living as nomads, people settled down in permanent settlements (villages). The Neolithic Revolution had a great impact on the lives of the people during this time period.

We learned in the previous lesson that the Neolithic Revolution led to farming for the first time.

As a result of the Neolithic Revolution, people settled in permanent settlements (villages).

During the Neolithic Revolution people learned to grow crops on a farm.This is called the domestication of plants.

During the Neolithic Revolution people learned to raise animals on farms.

Agricultural (farming) communities had to work together to clear land and create the water control systems needed to grow crops.

Ancient civilizations in many parts of the world used irrigation. The earliest form of irrigation probably involved people carrying buckets of water from wells or rivers to pour on their crops.

As better techniques developed, societies in Egypt and China built irrigation canals which brought water to their crops.
