The Village of Marsaskala Malta has been amember of the Douzelage Town Twinning

Organisation since May 2009.

In May 2010, Mayor Mario Calleja wasunanimously elected Vice President of the

Douzelage in the last Annual General Meetingwhich was held in Susice, Czeck Republic.

He immediately commenced his duties onseveral issues and fixed several meetings bothlocally and abroad in connection with the

organisation.

A 3 day official visit to the BulgarianMunicipality of Tryvana, where he was

warmly welcomed by the Mayor Mr. Nikolov.He visited schools, factories, tourist facilities,cultural centres and industrial sites.Negotiations were held with the President ofthe Douzelage organisation so that Tryvanawill join Douzelage in the next AGM which isdue to be held in Granville, France in May2011.

In April 2010, three students from Marsaskalaparticipated in a EU mini-parliament project in

Bellagio, Italy. They participated in various dramawork-shops with other countries. The group was ledby Councillor Daniel Spiteri and Principle JosephineMifsud from St. Thomas More College. A big thankyou goes to Co-ordinator Donatella in Bellagio.

In July 2010, another group of Maltesestudents from Marsaskala visited

Judenburg. During the five day stay, theyparticipated with other municipalitieswithin the Douzelage where theydiscussed the climate change and global

warming. Group was led by Councillor JohnBaptist Camilleri and a big thank youshould go as well to Co-ordinator AndreaKober of Judenburg.

Marsaskala was in constant contact withSiguldas Mayor Ugis Mitrevich from Latvia

and Inga Barisa Head of Investments andDouzelage co-ordinator within the SiguldaMunicipality. Marsaskala and Siguldatempted to organize a musical concert in

Malta. Unfortunately this event had to becancelled due to lack of attendance.Despite the fact that event wasnt asuccess, Siguldas Mayor Ugis Mitrevichtogether with his delegation visited Malta.Meetings with government entities werealso fixed and took place.

An official visit was also made by herExcellency the Latvian Ambassador for Russia.

She happened to be on a cruise liner in theMediterranean and requested for an officialmeeting in Marsaskala. Iveta Sers is theGeneral Consult for the Republic of St

Pietersburg in Russia.

In July 2010, Marsaskala welcomed and hostedthe Douzelage President Mr. Januz CesarySalamonczyk and his wife in Marsaskala. Severaldiscussions and meetings had taken place.

A monument will be erected onMarsaskalas promenade to mark the 20thAnniversary of the founding of Douzelage.This stainless steel monument will have thecoat-of-arms of all the member

municipalities embossed. This will beofficially inaugurated by the President. Forthis occasion the council will invitemembers from the Douzelage.

The President and Vice President Mario Calleja

discussed an EU project namely Leonardo daVinci to bring over to Marsaskala Malta a numberof student cooks from the Polish Municipality ofChojna to train and gather work experience inMaltese cuisine. This will take place in the whole

month of August.

The Municipality of Marsaskala has acquired theservices of a professional consultant to advise on

EU funds earmarked for local administrations. Mr.Mark Causon has been given specificinstructions to concentrate on EU Funds and totry and involve other municipalities when applyingfor such funds. Inga Barisa from SiguldaMunicipality will give a helping hand in his tasks.

Marsaskala has also become a member of ECAD(European Cities against Drugs). A three day

seminar on the subject was held in Gozo, wheredelicate questions regarding the subject werediscussed. Mayor Mario Calleja is stressing theimportance of Douzelage members to join theECAD, since their membership is more than vital.Vice President is also attending a conference inVarna Bulgaria to gather further information.

Mayor Mario Calleja also visited Chojna inPoland where he attended and participatedin the Programme Comenius Regios EUprogramme. He also visited schools andeducational and cultural buildings thatonce where the barracks of the Red Army.He also had discussions with the Mayor ofChojna Mr. Adam Redorowiez and Mr.Wojciech Konarski the Governor of Gryfino

District.
