("ABATE") recently was asked to shut down its annual fundraiser, Too Broke for Sturgis ("TBFS"), after a shooting at the event campground left three people dead and one critically injured. Although many details may not be entirely clear at this point, it is obvious that the tragedy had nothing to do with bikers in general or ABATE in particular. As many commentators have already explained, it was something that could have happened any- where. In the wake of the shooting, the first incident of its kind in 20 years of TBFS, ABATE faced very difficult decisions. First, it had to decide whether to continue TBFS despite the shooting and secondly had to address ques- tions regarding refunds. Although ABATE was in no way responsible for what happened, ABATE agreed with Mormon Lake Lodge (“MLL”) personnel to shut down the event. Ultimately, ABATE's decisions were influenced by respect for the deceased and their families, concern for the safety of the participants and its legal rights and responsibilities. Also considered was the fact that ABATE is not an event promoter, but rather a non-profit corporation whose ability to achieve its intended purposes depends heavily on its credibility and legiti- macy as an organization. ABATE had in no way violated any of the terms of its agreement with MLL and had every right to remain on the property. However, respecting the points made by MLL, but without conceding anything with regard to its legal obligations, ABATE did not physically resist its removal from the premises and fully surrendered the property to MLL on Saturday, July 23, 2011. Initially, everyone in attendance was asked to leave by MLL. After ABATE had surrendered the property to MLL control, MLL decided to let the campers stay. People who chose to remain in the event campground that night, did so of their own volition and as guests of MLL. ABATE's decision regarding refunds has been similarly difficult as the situation is complex. Many attendees arrived late on Friday, July 23, 2011 and experienced very little of the event. Many people demanded refunds though relatively few were among the last to register. Many of those requesting refunds had been at TBFS from the beginning and stayed on the grounds until Sunday, July 24, 2011. It is impossible for ABATE to verify each attendee's arrival and departure times. Additionally, many attendees asking for refunds signed in under aliases or entered the event without paying. The logistics of issu- ing refunds and the potential for fraud fac- tored heavily in ABATE's decision regarding refunds. Moreover, the flyer for TBFS explic- itly stated that there would be "no refunds." In light of these facts, ABATE will not be issuing refunds. ABATE acknowledges that many vendors undertook significant effort and expense to travel to TBFS, but inherent in any business endeavor is a certain amount of risk. ABATE surely would not have issued refunds had weather prevented vendors from operating at TBFS and there is no reason why this unforeseen circum- stance, not caused by ABATE, should be treated any differently. While ABATE understands that many atten- dees paid for an event they were not able to fully enjoy, the tragic events at TBFS affect- ed all those in attendance as well as ABATE as a whole. Any money paid to ABATE for TBFS will not profit any individual, but will go to support a cause that should be of great importance to all attendees – MOTORCY- CLISTS’ RIGHTS. ABATE has done its best to react to the situation in a way that is consistent with its intended purpose and that will enable it to continue serving that pur- pose for years to come. ABATE offers it deepest condolences to the victims' families and friends involved in this tragic chain of events and wishes a speedy and complete recovery to the survivor.

A.B.A.T.E. of Arizona, Inc. President’s Report

State Officer Meeting Minutes

Normally, this is the month that Iwould still be totally pumped overTBFS, but as we all know thingsdidn't go quite as planned this year.I will start by saying that my heartgoes out to the friends and family ofEd & Trina, and I pray for a speedyrecovery for the victim still in thehospital. I would also like to com-mend the TBFS committee for han-dling the situation in such a calm, professional manner. What hap-pened this year could have hap-pened anywhere and is no reflectionon ABATE. TBFS will continue on,in fact we will be back bigger, betterand stronger than ever next year.

I arrived at Morman Lake onWednesday to find probably around100 or more people already there.By the time Friday night arrivedthere were well over 1,600 peoplesigned in. I have to say as I wentaround to all the campsites I metpeople from all walks of life, allcamping side by side in the name ofmotorcycle rights. As I'm sure mostof you have heard me say numeroustimes, the motorcycle laws affectevery motorcyclist the same no mat-ter what you wear on your back orwhat you ride. This year’s TBFSshowed that we can all put our dif-ferences aside to work togethertowards a common goal. It's hard toexplain how I felt as I stood on thestage and told people what ABATEdoes for motorcyclists, watching thehuge 20th anniversary cake, made tofeed 650 people, being brought intothe arena by a camouflage truckwith its siren blasting, and listeningto Carey Slade sing the song shewrote called Too Broke For Sturgis. It was an overwhelming feeling see-ing everyone peacefully gatheredtogether and most of all everyonepartying together, and believe me

when I say everyone was having agreat time. Even after the tragedy, people supported and helped eachother understand what had hap-pened. The attendance at TBFS thisyear was just an indicator of thedirection our organization is movingin, everyone working, uniting, andpartying together to protect ourrights and freedoms. I guess mypoint is this, if we can party togeth-er we can work together to makesure we don't lose the right to exer-cise our rights.

I would like to take a moment tosay goodbye to my friend Rick“Animal” Henry, a huge advocatefor motorcycle rights. Rick was amember of our East Valley chapter,as well as their BOD Rep, a mem-ber of MMA and MMAA, and hadrecently been appointed our statesMRF Rep. Sadly, Rick lost his bat-tle with cancer this month and willbe sorely missed by all. Ride freemy brother!

Mormon Lake Lodge’s Letter to ABATEABATE of Arizona Board and Too BrokeCommittee Members.

July 27, 2011

We are all very saddened by the unfortu-nate loss of life that occurred during theToo Broke for Sturgis Event this pastFriday night. We must all remember andto keep in our hearts that this was a cata-strophic domestic incident. This was notbiker related or an event problem. It justhappened to occur at the time of thisevent. The sheriffs department made thestatement to me that this can happen inany backyard, and has.

We understand that this horrific eventaffected many, not only with the deceasedfamilies, but many lives especially thosethat were present at the scene and theABATE event coordinators and the staffof Mormon Lake Lodge. It is very diffi-

cult to not somehow feel somewhatresponsible for this occurrence becausewe are human and it happened at thisevent, but this incident was not in any-one’s control. That would be the same assaying that the tragic murders in Norwaywere due to a youth camp event.

Besides the emotions that I was dealingwith personally during the incident, Iobserved many others struggling with thistragedy. We cannot control the actions ofsomeone that takes such drastic measuresand creates such devastation.

I made the call to stop the event out ofrespect for the deceased and their familiesand to initiate immediate damage controlwith regards to local community andpress. The party could not go on the nextnight. I believe that it was a good call andheard from many of the ABATE, TooBroke Committee members that they

agreed with this course. Actually I don’tbelieve any of us could have functionedin any type of capacity the following day.

I understand that this event has causedchallenges with regards to guests/ ven-dors requesting refunds. I cannot adviseyou as how to manage that situation otherthan to tell you that we have experiencedthe same with early departures requestingrefunds, inventory, product and just thenegative fallout with regards to the inci-dent.

The incident is behind us but not forgot-ten. We must forge on in a positive direc-tion.

The future course of The Too Broke forSturgis event at Mormon Lake is not atend or final as of this time. Believe it ornot we are not just looking at the finan-cial or reputation aspects but that of the

long term successful relationship that wehave held with ABATE and the attendeeswhich have grown to call this home atleast that one weekend a year. I wouldlook forward to meeting with the commit-tee or board sometime 30 days or moreout to discuss. I feel that 30 days or morewill give the dust time to settle, the inci-dent will not be in the limelight and wecan think clearly. If we need to speak viatelephone or in person prior to thenplease give me a call. You have my num-bers.

My heartfelt thoughts go out to all of theABATE board and Too Broke Committeemembers as I know that you are all strug-gling with this.

Respectfully,Scott I. GoldGeneral ManagerMormon Lake Lodge

The outcome of the spaghetti feed wasgreat. A concern about the left handarrow lights were brought to attention. That left turners to be a victim of yel-low light runners. Another proposal tobe brought to the board would be theidea to have each chapter given allottedmoney for Motorcycle awareness andsafety events and activities each year. This in thought would help better andgive us the chance to promote it more, than just on an allotted time each year.

Mohave Chapter

Hello everyone,

With the tragic incident at Too Broke, this has been an interesting start of ourtenure. Our condolences go out to thefamilies and friends of the victims ofthis senseless act. All of us here hopethat this will not jeopardize futureTBFS events.

It’s been two months since we pickedup the pieces of what was the MohaveChapter. I would like to thank RodneyRich and Lonnie for their help in thetransition. Rodney turned over all theABATE merchandise he had, andLonnie helped our new Treasurer getthe bank account and secretarial materi-als etc. in our hands.

We held our second meeting SundayAugust 7th, and I’m a bit disappointedin turnout. The meeting place wasmoved from Golden Valley to BullheadCity, and I’m sure that is going to makeit a bit harder for Kingman members toget here, but on the same token, it helpsout Lake Havasu members as it is a bitcloser.

The meetings are held at the BHCMoose Lodge #1860 on Miracle Milethe 1st Sunday of each month at 12noon. The Lodge does a killer breakfaston Sundays for $5.00 between 9am andnoon. So if ABATE members get therea little early they can chow downbefore the meeting. What a deal !!

Our focus for the next couple of monthswill be promoting the Gun Raffle beingheld on Oct. 1st, as well as kicking offa membership drive. When I took thisposition, I was surprised to find outwhat a small percentage of fellow bik-ers actually belong to ABATE in thisstate. We are going to try and changethat, at least in Mohave County. Themajority of our board members areBHC Moose Riders including myself asPresident. I’m hoping our relationshipwith MC’s in our area will bring newblood into the organization. We willsee.

Ride safe,Joe MonfredoCoordinator, Mohave Chapter

Phoenix/ShadowMountain Chapter

Thanks to all of you that came to thechapter meeting at the Cave CreekCafé, we had a great turn out, and aspecial shout out to Joe, Kandy andstaff for letting us be their first “ban-quet“. I hope we see that many mem-bers and more next month. We have 2new business memberships that signedup, Eagle Wings Carriages andTailwinds Hauling.

It is that time when we nominate nextyears state officers. As for our chapterhere are our nominations:

Until next month,

Casey YatesPhoenix-Shadow Mountain Chapter

Southern Arizona Chapter

It looks more and more like the SAChapter members prefer meeting onSaturdays. We had 34 sitting tall, wellmost of them, last meeting July 16.Many enjoyed breakfast and an infofilled meeting.

This was my first Saturday meetingbecause of road trips, fire evacuationand a wedding anniversary. It was greatto see so many folks show up. Glad Iwas there.

Mark your calendars for our next high-way cleanup on September 10th. Onceagain, September 10th. Ron will lead aride from I-10 and Wilmot to ourcleanup area on State Highway 82.We’ll park at Buddy’s Bar, clean up ourmile and then have lunch on theChapter. Beverages will be available.Remember, the more the merrier andthe quicker we get done.

Some of our members attended anEmergency Accident Scene Care class.Everyone came out of the class with anexcellent understanding of how to takecharge of an accident scene, motorcycleor cage, and provide sustaining care thatdoesn’t endanger you or the victim. The Chapter chipped in part of the costand will continue to do so as the classesare held. Keep in touch with Ron orJim Clark for the class schedules. Jimwas very excited about the class andsaid another one would be held inTucson.

Dawn is still working (fighting!) thetransfers for our proposed Chapter shirt. It seems like transfers are close to beinga thing of the past and it’s very, veryhard to please

Everyone as to size, shape and color.Bottom line: She’s still working on it.Thanks to Dawn’s efforts we may endup with a neat Chapter shirt.

Ron reported that we have 121 membersand six business members. Biker’s Bayhas been dropped from the active roles.

The State Board of Directors decided tosupport each Chapter with $1,500 in Statefunds to support awareness. A motionwas made and seconded to ask for thefunds. As a Chapter, we’ll figure outhow to use those monies, i.e., billboards, advertising on busses, etc. That will bediscussed at a future meeting. Please puton your thinking hats and give us someideas as to how you feel the moneyshould be spent. All ideas accepted.Sean said the State will do an analysis onChapter budgets. Some in the meetingfelt like “big brother” would be watchingus but Sean said that isn’t the case. Healso reported that Carole O’Reilly, ourlobbyist, was pushing Right of Way withthe Legislature. She is also having ourelected folks look at longer yellow lightsand put arrows on left turn signals. Oneof our Senators is sponsoring a bill tostandardize yellow light times throughoutthe State. There is also a possibility ofstopping photo enforcement and elimina-tion of long and short form accidentreports. The Right to Repair case is on aFederal level. MRF and other rightsgroups are working on elimination ofmotorcycle only check points. What’s itall mean: A lot is going on in theMotorcycle Rights arena.

Word on the street is we’ll have a newChapter in Yuma soon. We wish them allthe best in getting started.

I have also seen some email on the sub-ject of Too Broke for Sturgis merchan-dise. There is a lot of it left over and itwill be offered for sale at our Chaptermeetings. Bring a couple of bucks andpick up a shirt or two.

I lucked out and won $26 bucks in the50/50 and Rich Millinovitch won $43 inthe dollar jar and donated it back to theChapter.

Due to another road trip (Colorado,Glacier Nat. Park and the Bonneville Salt

Flats for the BUB Motorcycle speed tri-als) I’ll miss the August 21st meeting.See you folks at the September 17th gettogether and I’ll be leading an after meet-ing ride to Sierra Vista for Rally in theAlley.

In the meantime, ride hard, Rich Montgomery

Yavapai Chapter

The Yavapai Chapter held a meeting onAugust 14th. Even with the threat ofmonsoon rain, our members showed upin force. There were 36 members inattendance. Thanks to all of the ridersthat showed up for a very informativemeeting. In our officers meeting all thecurrent officers pledged to run for theirchapter offices for 2012. All agreed wehave started something in the area thatwill benefit all riders and A.B.A.T.E. ofArizona. We all want to keep the organi-zation's message going in our area. Safety Report

I was wondering what to write about thismonth when it came to me at the Phoenix–Shadow Mountain meeting today. Therewas a long list of great runs that are com-ing up. Safety is always a concern espe-cially when we ride in groups.

The weather is soon going to be cool andrefreshing and the call of the road will bestrong. The camaraderie that we feelwhen we ride with our friends, old andnew, is great. It an opportunity to sharesomething you love to do with otherswho feel the same. It is also an opportu-nity to practice safe group riding skills. Here are some tips that I have learnedthrough the years:

The leaders of the group should besure that everyone is familiarized with theriding etiquette of the group, for example, speed, frequency of stops, formation ofriders.

Share cell phone numbers of severalriders and passengers in the group.

If it’s a formal/planned ride make sureseveral riders have a map of the route. Ifit’s an informal ride be sure everyoneknows the destination, approximate routeand expected arrival time.

RIDE YOUR OWN RIDE. Do not gofaster than you feel comfortable.

When picking the length of the rideand distance between stops, consider thestamina of the group, experience level ofthe group, limits of the motorcycles (sizeof gas tanks, size of bikes) in the group.

Make sure everyone knows the signals/communication in the group.

Generally, the most experienced riderslead and take up the rear with the lessexperienced riders in the middle. The lastrider should have a working cell phone tocall for help or communicate with theleaders of the group.

While riding in the group, do not fixateon the bike in front of you. Ride yourown ride, look beyond the bike in front ofyou, and look through a turn to whereyou want to go. (Remember that fromyour basic riding course?)

Be sure your machine is in goodmechanical condition before the start,

remember T-CLOCS. You do not wantparts falling off and hitting the rider fol-lowing you.

There should be at least a 2 secondcushion between you and bike in front ofyou. Consider riding staggered forma-tion. (Riding side-by-side leaves noescape room)

If riding on windy mountain roads it isbest to ride single file.

In traffic, the first bike on the left pro-ceeds through the intersection first.

Share the road. It is illegal to block anintersection without prior authorization, such as in a parade.

When parking, try to get the group offthe road as quickly as possible.

HAVE A SAFE RIDE, HAVE AGREAT RIDE!

PAC Report

Hello to all my Brothers and Sisters;

Here it is September already. Hopefullythe weather will be cooling down for ushere in the valley. I know I’m really tiredof the heat and am ready for some coolerriding weather.

Finally some good news!!! This pastmonth the United States House ofRepresentatives and Senate, voted on thesame day, August 1, 2011, and passedHR2715. The House passed the bill 421 –2. The Senate voted unanimous in pass-ing the bill. President Obama signed thelead law-exemption bill for kids’ OffHighway Vehicles into law on August 12,2011.

Please take a few minutes and call oremail your U.S. House Rep’s, Senators, and President Obama and thank them forall their hard work they put forward inpassing HR2715.

August was chapter nominations forchapter officers. If your chapter still hasofficer vacancies now is the time forYOU to seriously think about supportingyour chapter in filling those vacancies.Becoming a chapter officer is the firststep in supporting, ABATE of Arizona. An organization is only as strong as itsmembership. Occasionally it may be nec-essary for one person to hold more thanone officers’ position for the chapter, butthis should not be an ongoing situation.

ABATE of Arizona has approximately1000 members. Currently we have 6Chapters throughout Arizona. EachChapter potentially has; ChapterCoordinator, Vice Coordinator, Secretary,Treasurer, Sergeant-at-Arms, RunCoordinator, Safety Coordinator,Communications Officer, Political ActionCoordinator (PAC Officer), MembershipOfficer, Board of DirectorsRepresentative and Merchandise Officer. That’s 12 positions each Chapter needsfilled. Chapter Officer, positions are for1 year and many of these chapters havehad the same officers in various positionsyear after year. When this happens peopleget burned out. Many chapters’ officersare holding more than one officer posi-tion, while some have never held an offi-cer position within their chapter, why?

When members take on more than oneposition those people have to work twiceas hard to fulfill their obligations. Beinga chapter officer places you directly in

the planning stage for your chapter’sevents and decisions concerning chapterbusiness. I personally have found itrewarding and usually fun. If you haven’tvolunteered for a chapter officer positiongive it some thought. The best way is tocontact your Chapter Coordinator at yournext meeting, and volunteer for an openposition. I can almost guarantee an openposition in your chapter for next year.

Additionally, this year is State Officerelections. Every State Officer position isopen. State Officer positions are 2 yearcommitments. The only qualification isthat one must have held a Chapter posi-tion for at least 1 year. State Officerpositions, are no different than ChapterOfficer positions. No one should have tohold more than one officer position at onetime. If you have the minimum qualifica-tions get involved in supporting yourMotorcycle Rights Organization by run-ning for an Officer position.

Democracy begins with you, andDemocracy only works when you getinvolved!!!

Lobbyist Report

Well, the lobbyists are getting ready forthe next legislative session and hopingthat it is more productive this year. I’vebeen a lobbyist for about five years nowand the last year was the most frustrating.

In general, it was non-productive andconcentrated on one issue only, and eventhat hasn’t been settled. But that was thepast…the coming year will be better, andif it doesn’t seem to be happening, weneed to let them (the people we’ve elect-ed) know that we aren’t happy with whatis going on at the Dome and that we’ll doeverything we can to make sure that onlythose that truly have our best interest ontheir agenda will have our vote.

One of the most important items on ouragenda will be enhancement to the cur-rent Right of Way Bill. It should include‘left turn arrows’ or a lagging green lightthat will give those vehicles executing aleft turn the time to safely complete theturn, we must have a way to reduce thehorrendous accidents. If we can get legis-lation that is tough, but sensible, it willprotect us from the “I didn’t see them!”

defense and we will have won.

It would be great if more members of themotorcycling community were interestedin legislation and how or if our electedrepresentatives really represent us. Ifyou’d like to join the lobbyists as a guestobserver when the session reconvenes, letme know. A lot of our work is done onshort notice, but it can be very rewardingand almost always interesting and enlight-ening to experience it up close. It does-n’t hurt to get to know your representa-tives; they’re mostly just regular peoplewho are glad to see their constituents.Once you meet them you’re more likelyto call or email them with your concerns.Wouldn’t you rather say you tried tochange something you didn’t like insteadof just complaining?

HamstertimeGood Morning America. As most, ifnot all, of the editors for the variouspublications I write for will attest,I'm not good at meeting deadlines. It's not because I'm lazy or not inter-ested in this column, quite the con-trary but life has it's own way ofthrowing up roadblocks. Many times,I'm so busy living my life to thefullest, I simply don't have time to sitdown long enough to write about it.

Well, today is the 18th straight day of90 plus degree weather and as I sithere in this sweltering heat, I thankthe Good Lord for air conditioning.Yes, I know this is a motorcyclerelated publication and I should bewriting another amazing article aboutone of my recent adventures on backof my Harley but....... I can't writeand ride at the same time. So for thenext couple of hours, I'll kick back inmy "mentally palatial" 2 bedroomestate and suck up all the A/C that Ican. So open a cold one and take a

load off while I try to relate somestories from the road that have hap-pened the last couple months.

My life is anything but boring ! Ihave a good friend from Kentuckynamed Greg Puckett. About 2 yearsago after attending the V-Twin Expoin Cincinnati, Greg decided that hewanted to do "something big" and hewanted it to be something involvingmotorcycles. He did but I can'tdivulge what he's doing yet becauseit could ruin the surprise !!

Now, fast forward a couple months ,my cell phone rings;(Me) Hello?(Greg) Hamster, this is GregPuckett. Hey listen, Jesse and theBoys are playin' tonight at the oldBlack Stallion out on Kellogg Ave.Would you like to come out and havedinner with the band and hang outback stage ?( Me) OK, sure Greg, why not hang

out with a big time rock and rollband and did you say there was foodinvolved ?... For the record, I couldcare less about meeting another rockband but I'm a sucker for free food. This was the first time Greg had metthese guys and I think he was a littlenervous. Me on the other hand? Ohhell no, I just headed for the coolerand opened a PBR in a can. Comeon, it was beer, it was cold and it wasfree.

The band Greg was referring to is theband Jackyl and Jessie is one JesseJames Dupree. Jesse is a very gooddude and he's all business when itcomes to his band. As I was to cometo find out, he is also one hell of anentertainer and a big part of the TVshow Full Throttle Saloon on the FXNetwork. You know, that show shotduring bike week in Sturgis

If you watched the show last season, you've seen my friend Greg Pucketton there a lot also. I tuned in once tosee Greg and the rap star DMCstanding arm and arm. IF someonehad bet me a hundred dollars thatLess than a year later I'd be seeingmy friend Greg Puckett standing onnational TV with a world famousRapper, I would have lost that bet.

If your over 50 years old from theGreater Cincinnati area, you remem-ber the old Black Stallion. It'schanged names about 20 times since

then but ,my oh my, when the BlackStallion was happening, it was one ofthe hottest joints in town.

Well, that night was a blast !!!Jessie's band mates are some of thenicest most down to earth guys I'veever encountered. They were farfrom the Rock Star Prima Donaimage that some big name bandsthink they are entitled to be. Just acouple good ol' southern boys fromGeorgia. We drank PBR in a can andshared a couple shots of CrownRoyal. I came away with a very goodlesson that night also; if ya want real-ly good service at Arlens Bar, walkin with a rock band. Those waitresseswere coming out of the woodwork. And yes, Jessie bought my supperthat night.

Were there any super hot chicks there? Come on now, this is Jackyl we'retalking about here. There were abunch of good looking woman hang-ing around. They weren't looking forno middle aged balding Biker guysbut, they were there and I guess that'sanother story for another day . Manythanks to my good friend GregPuckett and the guys from the bandJackyl for a hell of a great night.Peace.

ATTENTION - ALL RIDERS:

=======================

It has come to our attention that business establishments in Arizona may still be

discriminating against motorcyclists. Please carry copies of this form with you

at all times. Discrimination can range from a sign stating "No Colors" or "No

Motorcycle Parking" or "No Motorcycle Attire" etc., to simply being asked to

leave a place of business, just because you are on a motorcycle or because of

your riding apparel. If anything like this happens to you, PLEASE fill out this

form in its entirety and send it to the address noted. Your lobbyists cannot get

sponsorship for "equal access" legislation, without evidence

of this type of discrimination.

Too Broke for SturgisBy Charity Stuart

Boy, it sure was nice to get out of theheat for a few days! Up in the cool pinesthe scenic ridin country, motorcycleenthusiasts and friends looking forwardto enjoying AZ’s largest MRO fundrais-ing event Abate of AZ’s annual TooBroke for Sturgis. We as a communitycelebrated a grand kick off to the 20thanniversary, with cake to commemoratethe milestone, people games, band with aspecial guest, tattoo and of course theMiss Too Broke contest. Unfortunately, this year only lasted one day, but neverthe less, attendance has grown to nearly2000 registered. The event’s largestattendance yet and only day one!

Amazing participation for being an eventthat is run privately by a single (NOTFOR PROFIT) MRO, ABATE of AZ.Usually such attendance shows at majorevents run by successful promotion com-panies, hired personnel and intended tobring in lots of revenue! On the con-trary, this event is run solely on the goodnature of volunteers and no profits arepocketed. This event, from day one, hasbeen ABATE’s (and only ABATE’s) pri-mary fundraiser. Moneys are used tofight legislation, allowing motorcycleenthusiasts the right to ride the way theychoose. Lobbyists in the organization donot get paid for their time or effortexcept in the passion shared.

Membership comes with perks, as withany community sharing a passion, webenefit from family type camaraderie, lifetime friendships, uplifting morale andexcellent networking, Oh don’t forget!Just recently introduced, members alsoreceive life insurance. Free!

Personally, I feel privileged to be a mem-ber and to have had such wonderfulexperience with the ABATE community.Just like a family, we have good timesand bad. But no matter how extreme theexperience, it bestows upon us memoriesand experiences to share and learn from. This annual event for many is a breath offresh air; a time to let the hair down, torelax with those not seen in a while, andto show off skills in a few ways such asin the bike/people games. Even theunpaid volunteers have fun and takepride in having a hand in the fundraiser’ssuccess. Attendees find this occasion tobe a highlight of the year, satisfying apersonal desire to vacation, yet give backto the community.

Vivid images of the very first ABATEToo Broke for Sturgis pop in from timeto time, such as, when the other kids andI went exploring, happening to find thefollowing year’s location, the memorabletaco bite, or so little traffic the gatheringcould take place just off the shoulder ofthe highway. ABATE’s community andefforts have made tremendous strides, overcoming so many obstacles over theyears. The entire TBFS committee andvolunteers deserve commendation andthank you for such an outstanding jobthat’s been done, all the hard work, thesweat and tears put into long hours, fortaking on this task and asking nothing inreturn. People and actions such as theseare what keep a community alive andstrong. I look forward next year the 21stannual Too Broke for Sturgis, may itbring our community together evenstronger than ever.

Thank you ABATE for allowing me thefreedom to ride the way I want!

To Bling or Not to Bling, That is the Question. They say that your ride is an extension ofyour personality. This must be truebecause rarely do you see 2 bikes thesame! Unless it's stock, off the showroomfloor or the "his and hers" editions eachbike is different. That is one of the bestthings about owning a bike, you can stripthem down, murder them out, give it awicked paint job, change the handlebars, chrome 'em, fringe, bags, bling, morebling, more lights, more leather,Conchos, beads, drop them to the ground, chopper them out or make it a rat bikethe choice is yours. That is why the ven-dors love us so much, bikers at a bikeshow are like kids in a candy store, somuch to see, but not enough money tobuy it all.

I guess it could be said a bike is muchlike a woman, we have a need to acces-sorize. Bikers take pride in their ride, thatis obvious especially when you ride in agroup, you can tell that the bikes arewashed, waxed and dried, the chromepolished so well you can see yourself. With the roar of the engines it's like aparade, when you look around people aresmiling and staring, just wishing theywere riding too!

One thing is certain, know matter howyou customize or bling your ride, it issure to be one of a kind, just like it's rider

May’s Guest Safety Articleby Stacey “Ax” Axmaker

Director - Idaho STAR Motorcycle Safety

Program

Curse the Darkness, or Light a Candle?

FACT: Car drivers often do not see us intraffic.FACT: Many crashes involve a car driverviolating a motorcyclist’s right of way(turning left in front of us, for example).FACT: When there is a crash, we aremuch more likely to get hurt. These are the facts. The STAR programis developing a motorist awareness cam-paign for 2007 to help with this, but as

individual riders in traffic, there is littlewe can do to change these facts. Thequestion to ask ourselves is “What canwe do – given these facts?”Many riders say “Drivers SHOULD seeus!” And I have to agree. However, there are a lot of things that SHOULD be:

I SHOULD be 25 pounds lighter than Iam

The Seahawks really SHOULD havewon the Superbowl last year

My dog SHOULD pee outside, and noton the carpet

Wishing it were different doesn’t change

anything. So, what can we do?#1. Expect them NOT to see you. Thismeans being prepared for the oncomingcar to turn in front of you. This meansbeing prepared for the car to change lanesinto your space. This means taking actionby adjusting your speed, adjusting yourposition, and communicating with trafficas needed to make yourself less vulnera-ble and give you more time to react.#2. Take steps to be more visible. Nowyou might think, “Why should I have todo that – they are the ones that should seeme!” True enough. But who suffers ifthey don’t see you? Take a look at yourriding gear and your bike – how visible

are you? If you are all in dark colors, you can be difficult to see. Light colors, extra lights, and retro-reflective materialon your jacket, helmet, and/or bike canreally help you stand out.#3. Try not to get emotionally involved. If someone cuts you off, turns in front ofyou, or tries to change lanes into you –give them the benefit of the doubt thatthey didn’t do it on purpose. The mainreason for this is that when we get mad,we make bad decisions. Let’s face it –racing up beside them and flipping themoff really doesn’t accomplish anythingexcept maybe make THEM mad, too.
