Dear Neighbours,

I hope the 17th issue of the Lossie Local finds you well

and enjoying the winter season. Have you guessed

the location of the front cover gates? The answer is at

the bottom of page 38 if you’re really stumped. Many

thanks to Jan Harrison for allowing me to use her

photo.

And thanks too to the Senior Citizens Bus Trust

Walking Group who have braved the winter weather

to deliver your magazine. A £300 donation has been

made to their funds. And 10% of this issue’s profits

will go to the Ladybird Group. A keen supporter of

theirs is Donnie Stewart - you can read an interview

with him on pages 11 & 12. Other articles to point

out are the Moray Sea Cadets on page 24 and

Hythehill Primary P6 on page 34.

I hate to say it but it’s not going to be long now until

Christmas. Why not get the Scouts to deliver all your

local Christmas cards? See their advert on page 29.

As ever there are a few new advertisers to spot,

starting with Abi and her pre-school singing group on

page 7. The Bothy is on page 13, Mary Jean Skincare

Products on page 17 and Rizzas on page 23.

Highland Caterham Hire is on page 24 and VIE at

Home is overleaf on page 25. D&K Refrigeration, The

House of Automata and Wiltshire Farm Foods are all

on page 27. Moray IT is on page 29 and Grahams

Natural Elements on page 35. Please try to support

our local businesses this Christmas and Shop Local,

Shop Lossie wherever you can. And when you do be

sure to mention that you saw their ad in The Lossie

Local please. Their valued support of the magazine is

what keeps it going and allows community and

charity groups either free or reduced cost advertising.

Please get in touch if you have any community news

and events for the Spring Issue (Mar/Apr/May). Take

a look under the ‘community’ tab at

Donnie Stewart‟s final photo exhibition took place in the Town Hall on 3 & 4 November. I went to speak to him about the exhibition, but

came away from our talk buzzing with information about Lossiemouth‟s past, previously unaware of its rich and varied history. Understandable perhaps from someone who

moved to the town less than ten years ago, but how much of this history is known today and what will be remembered in years to come? As Donnie himself pointed out, his generation will

soon pass, and instead of first hand accounts we‟ll have to rely on archives and photographs. It‟s these archives and photographs which Donnie is so good at collecting and preserving.

The title, „Lossiemouth‟s Unofficial Historian‟ was given to Donnie by Gary Imlach in his book ‟My Father and other Working Class Football

Heroes‟. First surprise (at least for me anyway) was that Lossiemouth is birthplace and childhood home of one of football‟s premier players in days gone by: Stewart Imlach. At the

pinnacle of his career he represented Scotland in the 1958 World Cup and was Man of the Match for Nottingham Forest in the 1959 FA Cup Final. Much of Chapter Two, which describes

Stewart‟s early years growing up in Lossie, is based on Donnie‟s recollections, playing „three and in‟ where Donnie would take Stewart‟s turn to go in goal, or watching Stewart dribbling a

tennis ball to school and back to improve his control. So worthy are Donnie‟s accounts that the author‟s handwritten inscription states, „Co-author of Chapter 2. Thanks for Everything.‟ A

fitting tribute for a man dedicated to preserving Lossiemouth‟s heritage.

And it‟s preserving such heritage that‟s important

to Donnie. Born in Union Street in 1931, Donnie grew up when Lossiemouth‟s fishing industry was thriving. He lived in the town until leaving

for university, gaining a BSc in Chemistry, before being called up for active service in the Royal Artillery. Later he was awarded a Caird Fellowship at Manchester University completing

a Masters in Corrosion Science. A varied career in both industry and university lecturing followed, in fields such as environmental engineering and corrosion science. Some of you with knowledge

of this area may even have studied from his textbook ‟Principles of Corrosion and Protection‟. I wonder if Donnie was aware then that this wasn‟t to be his last foray into publishing …

As reported earlier Donnie is passionate that Lossiemouth‟s heritage isn‟t forgotten, and if

something isn‟t documented Donnie is sure to get on the case. Donnie‟s older brother was killed in the Second World War (Donnie himself was 8 when it started), and when a trip to the

library revealed that no written record had been compiled detailing all the men and women

An Interview with Donnie Stewart ‘Lossiemouth’s Unofficial Historian’

Lossiemouth lost, an indignant Donnie set about correcting the matter. You can find the booklet, ‟Lossie War Memorial - Book of Remembrance

1939 - 1945‟ in the library today, a legacy left by Donnie ensuring that the faces and details of Lossie folk who gave their lives in the 2nd WW do not go forgotten and unrecorded.

Donnie isn‟t one to do things by halves, and research into his family tree resulted in him

tracing many of the main Lossie families, all of which he painstakingly recorded. This information can be found under the genealogy link at www.lossiefowk.co.uk. Much of Donnie‟s

exceptional local knowledge is captured in his book „Old Lossiemouth‟. First published in 1999 (and reprinted in 2002 and 2007), it contains many interesting photographs Donnie has

collected over the years. Lossie‟s fishing heritage obviously plays a big part, but there are other not so obvious points of interest. The Queen arriving on board the Royal Yacht

Britannia whilst Prince Charles was at Gordonstoun, the cave dwellings at Covesea, and Miss Asquith, daughter of the Prime Minister, presenting the trophy at the 1913

Moray Open are to name but a few. Stenlake

Publishing (www.stenlake.co.uk) have copies of the book to purchase.

Old photographs bring me back to where I originally started chatting with Donnie; his annual photo exhibition in the Town Hall. This,

Donnie tells me, started accidentally when he saw a similar exhibition in Rothes and hit upon the idea of doing something in Lossie. Together with Catherine Wood and a few dedicated

helpers about 10 shows have been staged so far, raising funds for the Town Hall and the Ladybird Group. This most recent exhibition marked not only Donnie‟s last show, but also his

80th birthday, when he celebrated after the show with friends and colleagues.

Although Donnie‟s last exhibition he trusts it won‟t be the last for the Town Hall, and is hoping that a successor will carry on with the tradition. And will Donnie be „retiring‟ from all

this information gathering and research? Somehow I doubt it. Even as I was getting ready to leave he was telling me about his plans to research and document the formation of

Lossiemouth. He will also remain busy as active member of the Elgin and District Cancer Support Group. Previously Chair of the group it‟s a cause close to his own heart, having sadly

lost his wife, sister and sister-in-law to the illness. He is also a busy Grandad and looks forward to visits from his Grandson. What a lucky boy to have a Grandad with so many

interesting stories and tales to tell.

It was a pleasure to meet with Donnie,

and I‟ve only been able to convey a fraction of the material he shared

with me. Keep an eye out in future editions for some of Donnie‟s poems,

and extracts from Lossie‟s 1894 „community magazine‟ of the

past „The Bulger‟.

LOSSIEMOUTH FOOTBALL CLUB A strong August showing saw Lossie head into September near the top of the table, and two big wins kept the Coasters in touch with the leaders. Big spending Formartine United visited Grant Park and

were taken apart by a fine team performance capped by goals in either half from Colin Charlesworth and Nikki Smith.

The following week, Lossie headed east to face city slickers Cove Rangers. Lossie were without a win at Allan Park in several years but raced into a two goal lead thanks to Nikki Smith and Martin McMullan. Cove pulled one back but in the second half

Lossie extended their lead before Cove lost their discipline completely and had three players sent off, with others lucky to stay on the park.

Taking a break from challenging for the title, Lossiemouth welcomed junior cracks Auchinleck Talbot to Grant Park for the side’s first round tie in the William Hill

Scottish Cup. Auchinleck took upwards of 300 fans north with them, and both sets of supporters were entertained by a game that was far from as one-sided as the bookies predicted. Lossie were ahead in the first half courtesy of a Nikki Smith goal,

but the visitors equalised in the second half before Lossie were reduced to ten men following the dismissal of Bryan Bell. Auchinleck

took advantage of the sending off and dominated the closing stages, before scoring the winner in the last minute to save Lossie a long trek south for a replay.

October began with the short trip east to

reigning champions Buckie Thistle. The Jags were in the midst of a poor run of form going into the game but had splashed out on Mark Chisholm in a bid to shore to up their leaky defence. That plan lasted less than five minutes, as Martin McMullan coasted through to open the scoring.

Zander Sutherland equalised for Buckie almost immediately, but Lossie were ahead again in the first half when Nikki Smith pounced on a defensive calamity to score from long range. Buckie pressed hard for an equaliser in the second half but Lossie stood firm and at times

looked like extending their lead as they recorded a famous win.

Lossie followed up the win at Buckie with two home games against lesser opposition.

Although stuck near the bottom of the league, Brora Rangers came to Lossie with cause for

optimism, having beaten Lossie on their last visit

to Grant Park and been minutes away from doing the double at home before a last gasp goal salvaged a point for Lossie earlier this year. Brora provided stiff opposition for the bulk of the first half but were undone just before the interval by a Nikki Smith goal, and Smith went on to

dismantle the visitors with a second half hat-trick. Liam Archibald also scored to give Lossie a 5-0 win, their biggest of the season so far.

15

Page 16: The Lossie Local Winter 2011

16 To advertise in The Lossie Local please call 01343 815328

Next up were Fort William, who were bottom of the league and without a point on the day of their trip north.

Much like Brora, they put in a performance which belied their lowly league position, and Lossie

needed a penalty to open the scoring midway through the second half. Ross Archibald bagged a second goal soon after to secure the points for Lossie, who rose to third place in the league after the win.

Lossie began November with a tricky trip to Bellslea to face Fraserburgh. The hosts had won their four home league games so far and two first half goals put them on their way to a fifth. Lossie were transformed following the interval and a Nikki Smith penalty hauled the Coasters back into the game, and Smith was on

target for a second time soon after to equalise. Fraserburgh were back in front late on thanks to a controversial penalty which left the visitors furious, and despite sustained pressure towards the end of the game

Lossie could not force a second equaliser and were forced to taste defeat for the first time in four games.

The club’s supporters now have their own internet forum, which is used for

discussions on all matters relating to the club and the Scot-Ads Highland League. The forum has become very popular with fans throughout the Highland League and contains information on all levels of local

football, including local junior and welfare clubs and leagues. To sign up and have your say, visit www.fitbanorth.com.

As I prepare to depart RAF Lossiemouth as Station Commander after a very busy 2 years of supporting operations in Afghanistan and Libya, I would like to offer 3 thank-yous. First to Group Captain 'JJ' Johnston and his team at RAF

Kinloss, who have had a torrid time over the past year; I have the utmost respect for the dignified way in which they have gone about the unenviable task of drawing down this famous RAF Station (for a handover to the British Army), whilst providing us with continued support in many ways. Second, my thanks to

the people of RAF Lossiemouth for their outstanding efforts during my time in post - they have been utterly professional, committed and loyal in the face of significant adversity and uncertainty, and they have delivered everything asked of them. Very fortunately, RAF Lossiemouth has a bright future with the arrival of Typhoon in 2013 to

replace the Tornado at some stage thereafter. And above all, I thank you wholeheartedly as the people of Moray for the wonderful support that you have so freely given to the RAF in this beautiful part of the world over the last seven decades and most especially during the past

year - there can be no doubt that your actions were decisive.

I wish you all every success and happiness for the future and I am

certain that my successor, Group Captain Ian Gale, is set to receive equally fantastic support in his time as Station Commander. I hope he and his wife, Sally, enjoy their time as much as we have as a family.

Most Sincerely,

Andy Hine

Today I would like to be a little bit politically incorrect. The politically correct diet gurus tell us

that polyunsaturated fats are good for us and saturated fats bad. Therefore today most of the fats in our diet are polyunsaturated, primarily from vegetable oils derived from soy, as well as corn,

safflower, sunflower and canola oil. Modern diets contain as much as 30% of calories from polyunsaturated fats. Scientific research indicates that this is too much and should be no greater than

4% of total caloric intake.

Excess consumption of polyunsaturated oils has been

shown to contribute to a large number of health problems including damage to organs, immune system dysfunction, digestive disorders and weight gain. One reason polyunsaturates cause so many

health issues is that they tend to become oxidised or rancid when subjected to heat, oxygen and moisture as in cooking, food processing and when refined oil is manufactured. Rancid oil is characterised by free

radicals - compounds that are extremely reactive chemically. Free radicals attack cell membranes and red blood cells and cause damage to blood vessels and organ tissue. They also damage your skin

causing wrinkles. Incidentally, I attended a so-called healthy cooking class last winter and suffered from a terrible cough, which got better when we had a week off and got worse again when the course restarted. It

only cleared completely after the course was finished - they used lots of polyunsaturated sunflower oil for stir frying, but apart from this plenty of healthy vegetables - interesting, isn't it?

Polyunsaturated oils are very important for our health, but they should be cold pressed, unrefined and never used in cooking, especially frying. So

what can we use for frying or stir frying instead? Best are all the saturated fats such as butter, ghee, goose or duck fat and for vegetarians coconut oil or palm oil from sustainable resources. Saturated fats

don't get damaged when heating and don't release free radicals when frying. Apart from this they’re made of short and medium chain fatty acids which have antimicrobial properties protecting us against

viruses, yeasts and pathogenic bacteria. But what about high cholesterol from saturated fats? I will go into this in more detail next time. In the

meanwhile, be politically incorrect and roast your potatoes on Christmas Day the traditional way with

goose or duck fats. You could even try using Ghee. Ghee is clarified butter with the milk solids removed

and can be made easily at home. Removing the milk solids stops the butter from burning and turning brown.

Making Ghee Use organic butter - toxins get easily trapped in fat (that's one reason why some of us find it difficult to

loose weight; we first have to loose the toxins in the body fat before we loose weight). The idea is to get impurities

and water out of the butter so you are left with pure fat. The points to remember are to never stir the butter while it is cooking, and to

keep a close eye on the colour so that the ghee doesn't burn.

Melt one pound of unsalted butter in a sauce pan on medium heat. Remember, the better the butter, the better the ghee, so use organic butter if you can. As the butter melts it will begin to boil and separate

(white froth on top with sediment settling to the bottom of the pan). Keep the butter boiling steadily. Do not stir. Allow the butter to continue to cook until the bubbling noise quietens down and

the sediment at the bottom of the pan starts to turn golden brown (you can check the colour of the sediment by gently tilting the pan), and the liquid under the froth begins to turn an amber colour (it

usually takes about 20 minutes). The smell will also change to that of freshly baked croissants. All these signs indicate that all the water has evaporated, and that you must turn off the flame immediately or the ghee will burn quickly. Leave the cooked ghee to

cool a little, then line a strainer with some cheese cloth and strain the ghee into jars. Discard the sediment. The ghee will turn hard when cooled and look yellow in colour - it melts quickly when

exposed to heat. If it is properly made, ghee will keep for over a year, even outside the fridge.

Established in 1856 the Sea Cadets was created by communities wanting to give young people instruction on a naval theme.

Sea Cadets are the largest UK maritime youth charity and offer young people between 10 -18 the chance to learn new things, experience new

challenges and make friends. We aim to inspire young people to reach their potential by developing valuable, personal attributes like team working, independence and

communication skills through nautical based adventure.

Moray Sea Cadets welcomes girls and boys from

the age of 10 to join their organisation

and encourages and supports them to become well-respected young citizens. The Moray branch currently has 8 junior cadets aged 10 -

12, and 12 cadets aged between 12 and 18.

A dedicated team of staff and unit assistants

teach the cadets sailing, rowing, powerboating and kayaking amongst others. Our water based area of operation is at Lossiemouth Harbour.

Cadets have great fun with adventure training, going on expeditions, hill walking and treks that test navigation and

endurance skills. Cadets learn about campcraft and some expeditions offer rock

climbing, abseiling, mountain biking and kayaking. There's also training in weapon

handling and safety which takes place on military sites and is supervised by highly skilled Instructors. Drill and Piping are traditional activities which cadets take pride in

and there are competitions and ceremonial events across the country, which range from local fetes, carnivals and fundraising events. We also offer the chance to study

Marine Engineering at BTEC level, First Aid, Seamanship, Meteorology, Radio Communication and Cookery. Another exciting opportunity is the Offshore Training Program,

giving adults and cadets the chance to travel and sail around the UK in one of 5 ships. (bursaries are available). You can find out more about our organization via the weblink:

Micro-Renewables - Solar Thermal Systems

„The timing couldn‟t be worse' I hear you say. An article about solar systems at a time when there‟s hardly any sun out there. But trust me, there‟s method in the madness.

Although cheaper than a solar PV system (as discussed in the last edition of the Lossie

Local), the installation of a solar thermal system requires a lot more thought and planning. That‟s why I provide you with some information now so you can think about it and get one

installed in the spring of 2012 if it‟s right for you. The big question is how do you know whether a solar thermal system is right for you or not?

Generally speaking, if you have a well-insulated house a solar thermal system may well be a

sensible thing to have, especially if you‟re not connected to mains gas. This is because if the house is well-insulated and you have a solar thermal system your central heating boiler can

be left switched off for longer, in some cases for more than six months. This not only saves fuel, it also means the boiler will last longer. A lot longer.

So, how does a solar thermal system work? In

simple terms a liquid is pumped through solar panels (also called collectors). The liquid „collects‟ heat from sunlight and passes this heat on to the water in your hot water tank. A solar thermal system consists of one or more

solar panels, which are typically installed on your roof, a pump station with a controller to circulate the liquid only when there is heat to be gained, and a hot water cylinder with a solar

coil.

There are many different solar panels available on the market. Manufactured from as far afield as China to as close as Moray. Evacuated tube systems and flat plate systems. Cheap and

cheerful or well-designed with quality components. How do you choose, which one is right for you? There are two product certification schemes out there for solar panels:

MCS (only valid in the UK) and the European Solar Keymark. I‟d only use products with the Solar Keymark certificate because their criteria

are a lot tougher than the ones for MCS. I‟d also choose a product that has been developed and certified fairly recently; the industry has

come a long way in the past five years and any product that has been around for longer just doesn‟t benefit from the latest innovations. And finally, I‟d choose a flat plate system. Evacuated

tubes can be a bit more efficient per square metre, but firstly roof area is generally not a problem and secondly flat plate systems tend to be more reliable in the long term.

Another choice you have is whether you prefer the solar panel(s) to be mounted on top of your

slate or tile roof, or integrated like a roof window. It‟s a question of preference but I‟d prefer a neat roof integrated panel over a much more „in-your-face‟ box sitting on top of my roof.

The next big consideration is the hot water tank. If you don‟t have one yet you‟ll need one. So where do you have space for it? And if you do have one does it already have a solar coil built

in?

At this point you should contact an accredited installer who will check what you‟ve got, what you need and advise you on everything else. And finally, the money side of things. A

complete system, including installation, typically costs between £4,000 and £6,000. There is currently a small grant of £300 available but there are some strings attached. This grant

scheme is called the Renewable Heat Premium Payment (RHPP) and is only available until 31 March 2012.

There is also the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) in the pipeline. This is a UK Government scheme that is meant to pay people to generate

their heat from a renewable source. It is scheduled to go live in October 2012, but there are no details available yet. And, as we have just seen a few weeks ago with the Feed-in-

Tariffs for photovoltaic systems, things can change rather rapidly and dramatically.

As always, feel free to contact us if you have any questions about any of the domestic renewable energy technologies and we will do

our best to provide you with the information you need. Our contact details are:

Jesus, the Reason for the Season This phrase, which has now become something of a slogan,

appears on everything from cards to websites and lots of other types of merchandise. You would think that after nearly 2000 years since the night of the Lord Jesus‟ birth, that we would hardly need reminding.

For Christians there may be no need to be reminded, although we enjoy how it allows our thoughts to centre particularly on the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. But for many

others, isn‟t it amazing how forgetful we seem to be? Of course some might take exception to this reminder, preferring simply to enjoy the tinsel and the gifts. The fact remains, however we view the

matter, that there is a Christ in Christmas. Focusing in on the events described in the Gospel by Luke, Chapter 2, it‟s sometimes difficult not to see the

scene from the perspective of those who design Christmas cards. Sadly this is something of a misconception, the reality of the situation was altogether more stark. The song of the Angels, though

„resounding clear and long‟, would fade; the breathless shepherds rushing to see the baby would not be met with a scene of soft candlelight and tinsel. These

images, while clearly being a good marketing ploy, have given a somewhat distorted view of the reality.

But however impoverished the circumstances might have been, the Bible leaves us in no doubt about who was born and laid in the manger. The prophets had foretold

of the one who would be born, (Isaiah 9:6) and his credentials were impeccable and everlasting. Prior to His birth, a privilege often enjoyed by prospective parents was

entrusted to angels who revealed the infant‟s name, Jesus. Sending an angel, God said, „Thou shalt call his name JESUS, for he shall save His people from their sins‟ (Matthew Ch1 v21). This little baby? How?

Clearly like most baby boys, he would develop and grow into manhood, when the purpose of His coming would be seen. Yes, He is the „Reason for the

Season‟, but unlike the present season which will pass, the

Gospel Hall, James Street

Page 31: The Lossie Local Winter 2011

everlasting effects of His life and death will remain. That He was born, there‟s no doubt, that He lived, there‟s no doubt, and in His dying

God had a plan and purpose that men and women might be saved. When we‟re caused to think of the circumstances surrounding His birth and contemplate the „Reason for the

Season‟, let us not forget the reason for his coming. ‟ . . . He shall save His people from their sins,‟(Matthew Ch1 v21). Just as we don‟t often like to change our „Christmas card‟ perception of Christmas, neither do

we like to think of the „sins‟ that He came to save us from. And yet that is the reason why he came, and that we sinners might be reconciled to God.

According to the angel, salvation is unto „all people‟, but it is a personal matter and demands a personal decision. It demands a clear and frank acceptance of where we stand before God. At this time of year, a

season of ‟ . .good tidings, of great joy‟ (Luke Ch2 v10), it would indeed be a joyful one for you if you were to accept this Saviour as your own.

Hythehill Primary P6 Poetry Writers head for the Library

Primary 6 poetry writers from Hythehill

visited Lossiemouth library on the 6th

October for Scottish National Poetry Day.

As they walked over there was a feeling of eager anticipation.

A few weeks before they went Mr. Leitch,

the librarian, had popped into the school and

extended an invitation to P6 to visit the

library. He suggested that they might even

like to write their own poems about games they like to play. He is always keen to display

the children's work in the library. 'Games'

was the theme for National Poetry Day this

year.

On arriving at the library Mr. Leitch gathered

the children onto the carpet and read them some poems. He read a variety of poems - one

was about a female pirate and one poem

included a spell to make your Head Teacher's

trousers fall down!

One of the pupils said, "The trip was inspiring

and all of the poems Mr. Leitch read were

great, I couldn't pick a favourite."

Armed with their membership cards the boys

and girls eagerly explored the library shelves

for books which appealed to their individual

interests. Mr. Leitch and the P6 teacher set

about displaying the children's poems as the

pupils searched.

A member of the general public exclaimed to

their teacher, "They are very well behaved

even though there are so many of them."

Their teacher was proud of them and was

grateful to the nice man for his comment.

Many books were taken out that day. Those

of the class who were decisive about their

book choices even had time to set up and play

their board games in the comfortable and

welcoming setting of the local library.

There was a mad dash back to school as it was

feared that the school cook would be tapping

her toes, waiting for the class.

On leaving the library Mr. Leitch took a photograph of the children and their poetry

display. He also offered the children National

Poetry Day postcards. The children wrote out

their postcards back at school and some sent

them to their friends and relatives to tell

them the highlights of their visit.

All agreed that it was a fantastic and fun trip

and one boy suggested that it was a brilliant

learning day. Some children are even thinking

of experimenting with the spell to make the

head teacher's trousers fall down.

Everyone is looking forward to future trips.

The next plan is to drop off filled shoeboxes

at the Blythwood lorry in St. James Square

with a heat up at the Baptist Church coffee

morning first and a renewal of library books

after. Perhaps the boys and girls will write up that trip to share with the readers of the

Lossie Local. Thank you for reading our

article, your interest is very much

appreciated.

25 years of friendly efficient service

from the Medical Centre

In the beginning God covered the earth with broccoli, kale, cauliflower and spinach and all kinds of red, green and yellow vegetables so that Man and Woman would

live long and healthy lives.

Then, using God‟s bountiful gifts, Satan

created Baileys, Magnums and mince pies. And Satan said, “You want brandy butter with these?” Man said “yes please” and woman said “I‟d like some too….. And with chocolate chips.” And lo….they gained ten pounds.

And God created healthy yoghurt that woman might keep her figure that man

found so fair. And Satan brought forth white flour from the wheat and sugar and rum from the cane and combined them to make luscious Christmas pudding. And woman went from size 12 to size 20.

So God said “try my fresh green salad”. And Satan whipped up a blue cheese dressing with garlic bread on the side. And

Man and Woman loosened their belts a further three notches.

God said, “I have ordained healthy vegetables and olive oil in which to cook them”. Satan bought forth deep fried coconut king prawns, butter dipped lobster chunks and bacon wrapped chipolatas. Man‟s cholesterol hit 7.5.

On Boxing Day God brought forth running shoes that his children might lose those

extra pounds. Satan sniggered and invented the remote control so that Man would not have to toil to change channels. And Man and Woman laughed and cried

before the flickering light and started wearing stretch jogging suits……all day.

Then God gave them turkey breast so that Man might consume fewer calories and still satisfy his appetite. Satan chuckled,

created the 99p double cheeseburger and asked “You want fries with that?” Woman said “Yes please” and Man said “and supersize them”. Satan said “it is good”. And Man and Woman went into cardiac arrest. God sighed and developed triple

bypass surgery.

Satan sniggered and created the NHS

waiting list.

Happy Christmas!!

“As a local tradesman I have found it invaluable to advertise in this publication. It appears to me that many potential customers hold on to their copies of The Lossie Local, and refer

to the information in it for a much longer period than they would, say, a newspaper.” (Jeffrey Lee Roofing Services 815343)

“Just to say I was in Lossiemouth on holiday recently and found several past copies of your magazine in my self-catering accommodation. I thought the contents were brilliant and

gave me lots of insight into the town and its local businesses and services.” (email received from holidaymaker)

The Lossie Local - Why Advertise?

About The Lossie Local

The Lossie Local was established in May

2008, home produced by a Lossie resident, with the aim of disseminating community information and providing an affordable way for local businesses to promote themselves.

Community Focus

All of the community news, events and editorials included in the magazine is done so free of charge, a great way for local organisations to promote

themselves and normally only available

at great expense in other publications. Local groups deliver the magazine for a £300 donation, and 10% of profits each issue are given to local charities.

Affordable Advertising

The Lossie Local has deliberately kept prices low so local businesses can afford to advertise. Where else can you get a

quarter page advert from as little as £26!

It’s Win Win All Round!

Charity & community groups get great exposure and local businesses get

effective, affordable advertising.

“I’m always impressed with the quality and content of The Lossie Local. There’s actually something to read about within it which is rare nowadays! Our company has definitely

benefited from advertising.” (C Mackay MD, CM Design 540020)
