THE LITTLE BOOK OF ONLINEshop

R ecently, i decided to splash my hard-earned dollars (a whole lot of them, at that) on

a fancy new bag. Considering it was a sizeable investment, i did a fair bit of in-store recon trying to decide who to take home. i even took a friend for a second opinion, but like a typical Libra, i wasn’t ready to commit. i needed to sleep on it. By next morning, i’d made a decision: that bag was mine.

i strolled into the store feeling like a total viP and patiently waited at the counter, plastic at the ready. the 18-odd staffers were all preoccupied with other customers so i waited my turn, making sure i caught the eye of every single one, dressed in their head-to-toe black ensemble (i’m not giving it away, am i?). then i waited and waited and waited for tHe NeXt 45 MiNutes without a single nod of recognition. the only thing that stopped me from falling into a micro-sleep, in a store that would rival times square for eerily calm chaos, was the sight of a space that had opened up on one of their plush couches. i lunged for it (not a very viP thing to do, but hey… desperate times), but the moment i hit the cushion, my invisibility cape fell off and someone scooted me away – apparently that seat had been “reserved” for another customer. and then no one sat there. Literally, no one. this was about the time i started to tear up. Yes, i cried like a baby in a store that i can never show my face in ever again.

Long story short, i got my bag but left my dignity on their polished-wood floor. as i trudged down the street in search of salted caramel ice cream to start my pity party (my usual instinct when i’m sad, like a lot of people, is retail therapy, but you couldn’t have paid me to walk in another store), i thought how nice it would have been to open my laptop, pick out a bag online and then kick back and await its arrival on my doorstep. With the speed that some sites offer delivery, it almost could have beaten me home. and while we all know shopping from the comfort of your modular chaise can never give you the personal experience that most stores still do so well (recent trauma aside), sometimes it’s nice to jump the changeroom queue and spend that time washing your hair, or on the phone to crazy aunty Cathy – doing just about anything that doesn’t involve a Pdee (public display of extreme emotion).

so here they are, the top websites the SHOP team can’t get enough of – because, for all the time we spend writing stories, emailing Prs and designing pages, we clock about twice as much trawling the web for shoes, bags and alexander Wang dresses. some might even call us experts in the field of online shopping. all i know is, i can guarantee you many hours of happy online browsing – and the only thing you’ll need to wait for is the postie, promise.

Happy shopping! BB

MY Look: Ninety per cent of my wardrobe is black and white (and probably always will be), so i try to add a few crazy-bright statement pieces into the mix every season, with a focus on sleek shapes and beautiful fabrics. MY WeB-sHoPPiNg stYLe: i’ll add 37 pieces to cart before taking a short break, circling back and deciding exactly how much money i really want to part with that day. then i edit from there… normally picking up the very first two items i found.

WHat i Love Most aBout BuYiNg oNLiNe: i can browse at 11pm on sunday night if i can’t sleep (the convenience is also what gets me in trouble). But then Monday morning comes and i have parcels arriving that week to look forward to. i also love that there’s almost nothing you can’t purchase online these days – i pick up fashion and homewares for me, and have gifts sent directly to interstate friends and family.

MY NeXt Big PurCHase: some extravagantly soft, high thread count bed linen. sometime in the past 12 months, i decided my wardrobe was (close to) full but my apartment could do with some work, so homewares are my latest obsession. it’s my goal to recreate the experience you get at a five-star hotel, so heavenly pillows are next on my lust list after new sheets.

MY Look: i’m all about tailored classics. i like the idea of layering in a clever way, and wearing black head-to-toe gives me a sense of confidence and ease. i also love denim, whether it’s a skirt, wide-leg jeans or a top.

MY WeB-sHoPPiNg stYLe: i do my smartest shopping at night, after dinner – it’s when i’m best able to judge whether i actually need a pair of shoes or a dress – because it’s when i’m at my least vulnerable and most relaxed.

WHat i Love Most aBout BuYiNg oNLiNe: that i can trawl 10 sites at the one time. and nothing makes me happier than knowing i have a package to look forward to (and that inside might be a little something extra). it’s also useful for tracking down hard-to-find sizes and colours.

MY NeXt Big PurCHase: an acne motorcycle jacket. in black, it’s a keep-forever classic piece, and perfect for winter layered with a chunky jumper or a fine-knit turtleneck.

mychameleon.com.au Go there when: You want wardrobe inspo in a stunning setting. What you’ll find: it’s worth visiting alone for the gorgeous french underwear label Yasmine eslami. i’m also hooked on the shoots featured – it shows clothes on models as well as still-life, and it styles with gorgeous layers and lots of classic pieces so you can see exactly how to wear what you’re buying.

farfetch.com Go there when: You want a shopping trip in europe but the flight’s just not on the cards. What you’ll find: an online hub for a bunch of amazing european boutiques that otherwise wouldn’t have a web presence. this means the selection is large and varied, and i often find pieces i’ve not seen on any other websites. it’s my go-to for Marni and ann demeulemeester.

lagarconne.comGo there when: it’s time to invest in a new coat or jacket. i’ve bought all my anoraks, coats and trenches here for the past few seasons. What you’ll find: an impressive range of a.P.C. – the french label that’s your ticket to locking down effortless Parisian style – but because it’s an american store, you’ll find it way easier on your wallet shopping in us dollars.

greenwithenvy.com.auGo there when: You need an extra-special dress – and fast. What you’ll find: it’s aussie, so there’s a great mix of local labels (Camilla and Marc, Bassike, ginger & smart), but i visit here mostly for the impressive range of alexander Wang.

peterlang.com.auGo there when: You want a jewel update. What you’ll find: an aussie accessory mecca – while Peter Lang is known for its special-occasion jewels, this season the site’s also a must-visit for trend-based pieces. the ott look is in right now, which means piles of statement pieces – rings, earrings, necklaces and bangles. Lang’s style and materials perfectly capture what’s hot.

matchesfashion.comGo there when: You’re ready to invest, baby. What you’ll find: the online home of the London bricks-and-mortar store, so you can get a fix of its high-end brands closer to home (even if it’s just window shopping). Check out the collection of Carven, yet another covetable french label. think of this as the new Net-a-Porter.

openingceremony.usGo there when: You want to add some cred to chain-store basics. What you’ll find: the e-store’s as happening as it comes. Not only does it have the coolest brands (Christopher kane, kenzo, suno and delfina delettrez), the team always dig out amazing pieces from labels you might not normally look at. visit regularly to check out new collabs with brands like dkNY and timberland.

grown.comGo there when: You want organic skincare. What you’ll find: the most delicious plant-based face and body products. i love grown’s aesthetic; the beautiful packaging means i’m happy to display it in my bathroom. the hand wash smells insanely good – i dare you to find one that gets half as many compliments from guests.

You’ll see the full ranges here, and as well as special occasions, they all do great everyday pieces like asymmetric skirts and tailored blazers.

MY Look: eclectic! i look like alex Mack’s stunt double one day and a francophile fashion girl the next. some things never change, though, like my love of menswear and practical (usually expensive) shoes.

MY WeB-sHoPPiNg stYLe: i browse a lot of e-boutiques in the week, but that’s always work-related (read: safe). once a month i’ll find myself home alone on a saturday night and that’s when all hell breaks loose on my savings account.

WHat i Love Most aBout BuYiNg oNLiNe: there are no chatty salespeople, you can buy extravagant designer goods in a spaghetti-stained t-shirt, and you can picture yourself looking just as fabulous in that dress as the model.

MY NeXt Big PurCHase: the fact that i’m saving for a Hawaiian holiday means hours spent staring at Net-a-Porter on the verge of tears. i’m not being dramatic. i need a tiger-print kenzo backpack.

society6.comGo there when: Your weirdly wonderful aunt’s birthday has come around and this year you want to get a gift that’s uniquely “her”. something as random as a print of Chewbacca listening to an iPod (but only if she’s into that sort of thing). What you’ll find:an infinite number of arty designs you can also get on t-shirts, canvases, iPhone covers, cushions, cards, tote bags… just about anything you can think of.

forwardbyelysewalker.comGo there when: the fashion stars align so that the amazing isabel Marant dress you’ve been tracking since you first saw it on the runway is finally in stock, and you’ve got a wad of spare birthday/rainy-day cash. What you’ll find: an aggregate site that stocks all the coolest pieces from international designers – all the stuff i can actually afford.

anonymousgalleryshop.comGo there when: Your apartment needs a dose of street cred and a bright wall print or a just-plain-kooky sculpture is the missing link. What you’ll find:Plaster made in the shape of a crumpled starbucks cup, prints from Monsieur a (aka renowned graffiti artist andré saraiva) and books i reserve space for on my coffee table.

shopmarkethq.comGo there when: You’re saving for an overseas holiday, but still have the itch to splash a little bit of cash on a lot of brands. What you’ll find:a fun, quirky mix of younger labels like Minkpink, evil twin and stylestalker. i go here for fashion snacks like digi prints and slogan tees.

shop.lofico.com.auGo there when: You’d happily pass up a trip to the beach in favour of spending your sunday arvo in the darkroom (er, your closet) developing negatives. What you’ll find:retro-era cameras from cult hipster brands including Lomography and Holga. Not to mention more types of film than a budding photographer would know what to do with.

shop.kitsune.frGo there when: You live for a Breton striped tee and you’re keen to explore the effortless french fashion kitsuné does best. What you’ll find: Coveted collaborations with designers like Petit Bateau, its investment-worthy inhouse brand Maison kitsuné, and club mix compilations on Cd and vinyl to get you dancing in your seat.

karenwalkereyewear.comGo there when: You want to protect your eyes from the elements without resorting to standard-fare sunnies that can’t survive in your bag. What you’ll find:Classics with a modern twist you’ve come to know from kW, plus a few envelope-pushing styles for good measure.

net-a-porter.comGo there when: it’s been a long, hard week, which means it’s time to treat yourself to a big box all tied up with heavenly black and white ribbon. You know the one. What you’ll find:the catwalk lust-haves that you’ve been obsessively waiting for to drop on the site. all my personal picks are on here: isabel Marant, Carven and theyskens’ theory, to name just a few…

MY Look: forever fuss-free. i don’t like looking thought-out, and often forget to accessorise midweek, so i rely on strong prints and big colours to speak volumes. otherwise, a basic tee and jeans paired with heels works wonders.

MY WeB-sHoPPiNg stYLe: i browse on my phone while i’m lazing on the couch or in bed, right before i drift off. shopping online relaxes me. it’s quality me-time – a virtual brain massage after a long day.

WHat i Love Most aBout BuYiNg oNLiNe: i’ll shop music and homewares more than anything, but i also love indulging in handbags. i get a serious buzz from comparing prices off my fave sites and making the best value-for-money buy.

MY NeXt Big PurCHase: i’d love to find an exaggerated-shape coat – something mannish and luxe-y. i’m thinking caramel, but i’ll be open to stumbling across something random and falling head over heels.

ssense.comGo there when: You want to look more like an off-duty model. What you’ll find:a rainbow of leather jackets alongside a tight edit of cool designer clothing, heels, bags and jewellery. it’s also heavily stocked with kenzo – a good place to head for all those wacky prints spotted on your fave street-style blogs.

ln-cc.com Go there when: You’ve saved enough cash for something high-end.What you’ll find:everything you could need to make your monochrome-loving wardrobe sing. there are always great minimalist pieces in various shades so if you’re vibing the whole scandi movement, splurge on a piece from here and team it with a chain store buy. think ‘Where’d-you-get-that?’ slick, grown-up pieces.

liberty.co.ukGo there when: You’re in desperate need of fun, pretty things. What you’ll find:Besides items with that famous Liberty floral print, this site has loads of incredible homewares and gifts. i’ve picked up great cushions here before, and also added cute throws, bedding and more to my wish list.

fallow.com.auGo there when: You feel like going a bit goth, accessories-wise.What you’ll find:dark and moody pieces from the likes of Pamela Love, deadly Ponies and other equally spooky-but-cool designers. Check out the awesome copper spiked rings, plus skulls (my major obsession) on just about everything else.

needsupply.comGo there when: You’re keen to update your wardrobe with some trend-driven stuff. What you’ll find:Brilliant seasonal shapes with not-so-eye-watering price tags. go crazy adding-to-cart slouchy knits, silk printed dresses, and a mountain of sunnies, bracelets and other gimme- now accessories. and keep coming back to shop pieces from about-to-hit-the-bigtime indie designers.

oaknyc.comGo there when: dinner with the girls is on, but you have “nothing to wear”.What you’ll find:everything here is very edgy and downtown New York-y, so get clicking for unusual clothing that looks ultra-chic when it’s slung on. it’s a fantastic spot for comfy shirts and slacks, so stop in if you’re a sucker for boy-dressing.

anotherlove.com.auGo there when: You’re planning a hot date. What you’ll find: so much crazy-bright goodness – it’s like these local guys scour new collections and just pick out all the fun stuff. there’s also a small but amazing edit of shoes from serious-fashion labels like Carven. everything makes you feel a million bucks, so it’s perfect for a night out.

luisaviaroma.comGo there when: You’re ready to splurge on a new big-ticket item. What you’ll find:awesome designer spoils in the same vein as Net-a-Porter and shopbop. get clothing from big-gun labels like Lanvin, Marni, etro and fendi. the best part? unlike other power-player designer sites, they offer free shipping to aussies. Like you need another excuse.

Hands up if you’ve been victim to this online delivery paradox: your precious parcel is redirected back to the post office because you aren’t home to receive it. and you can’t get to the post office because you work business hours. sure, it might only take a day or three to wait for it to ship – but knowing your new dress/shoes/beauty loot/duvet cover is less than a kilometre away, languishing at the local postie, is total agony.

enter these can’t-come-soon-enough australia Post initiatives: Customer Collect

and Parcel Lockers. Both are free services that enable you to have your buys delivered to an address you can pick up from – Customer Collect is ideal if there’s a post office near your work, while Parcel Lockers (in locations across capital cities) allows you to pick up your delivery 24/7. go to auspost.com.au for more info.

if it’s a big delivery, like a major appliance, a service site like occasional Butler (occasionalbutler.com) can even connect you with a trustworthy person who’ll be there to stand in – without costing a bomb.

Find a home for your parcels when you’re not.

returns policies vary from store to store, so the golden rule is to check the site you’re buying from for details (if they don’t have this info available, it’s better to flex your plastic elsewhere). Local e-tailers are bound by the same rules as bricks-and-mortar stores – in simple terms, you can get a refund if it’s faulty but not if you change your mind. Most websites go above and beyond this (it sweetens the can’t-try-before-you-buy deal), and some might even pay the postage to send things back.

three exceptions that may catch you out: sale items, underwear and swimwear are often unreturnable under any circumstance.

if you’re buying from an overseas site, australian consumer protections do not apply. Legitimate sites often have the same policies as our local ones, but it’s still wise to double-check everything first. Bear in mind, too, that return overseas postage can take the shine off a bargain, so factor that in when you purchase.

the threshold to $500, but for now the government says there’ll be no change.

bongous.com“it’s super-easy to use, and since i’m a premium member (the monthly fee costs the same as three venti soy Lattes), it consolidates all the things i buy from different websites into the one parcel, to save me money when i ship it. Plus, Bongo has two locations – one in europe and one in the us – to cater to my every international purchasing whim.” – Laura

lilshoppa.com“an aussie named Michelle runs this company from her base in La, and the service is friendly and thoughtful – she’ll remove excess packaging and boxes to try to reduce

the size of your parcel, thus saving on hefty shipping costs. and it’s all wrapped securely rather than just flicked over in whatever the store originally sent out. You really feel like your purchases are safe, whether you spent a little, or (gulp) a lot.” – Kristie

hopshopgo.com “shop directly from the sites yourself, or they can do it for you if a us credit card is required. it’s linked to Paypal for almost-too-easy payment, and Hopshopgo consolidates packages from multiple stores to save you on delivery.” – Ellie

sHop saFeLy if you’re not sure whether a store is legit, check the ‘about

us’ or ‘Contact us’ section – it’s a good sign if the company has a physical address and phone number. secure sites will have web addresses beginning with

https:// (note the extra ‘s’). if in doubt, shop elsewhere.

What if the website won’t ship to Oz?our stronger-than-ever dollar means the us is the number one go-to for aussie shoppers – but some sites won’t let you purchase unless you have

a us address. Luckily, plenty of parcel-forwarding services have popped up to help you out of the no-shipping bind.
