She is the aunt of Bethany Ward, a student here at Cincinnatus . Our assignment was to write a letter to her class using present progressive, preterite, and present tenses telling about ourselves and our school. We learned that in their school, they have to wear uniforms and that most of the students’ parents are in the military. Submitted by: Hannah Green

Math Night 2012 On Tuesday March 20, the Elementary hosted a successful Math Night event! There were 9 different stations that had students practicing various math skills. The stations for grades 3-4 had students measuring and making play-dough, making geometric shapes with gum drops, using M&M’s to understand fractions, and listening to a story to help understand how to multiply. The stations for grades K-2 had their students up and moving by playing a hopping addition game and a bean bag tossing subtraction game. There was also a fun game that had students practice their operations, I-pads for kids to help learn their shapes, and a station that helped practice measuring the lengths of objects. The event was a fun-filled evening for the more than 50 students and parents who attended. Thanks to

all the teachers and staff who helped make Math Night a success! Submitted by: Ms. DeLapp

Did You Know?

• It is required by law for all children under the age of 14 to wear a bicycle helmet.

• Wearing a bicycle helmet is 88% effective in preventing serious head injuries in a bicycle crash.

Why Is Bicycle Safety So Important?Bike riding is a lot of fun, but accidents happen. Every year, about 300,000 kids go to the emergency room because of bike injuries. Some of these injuries are so serious that children die, usually from head injuries.

A head injury can mean brain injury. That's why it's so important to wear your bike helmet!! Wearing one doesn't mean you can be reckless, but a helmet will

provide some protection for your head and brain in case you fall down.Resource Corner:

Cornell Cooperative Extension has bicycle helmets available for Cortland County Youth ages 13 and under. Call them today @ 753-5077 to make an appointment for your child’s fitting and FREE helmet!

New Date forK-12 Art Show

The ART SHOW date has been CHANGED! The new date of the K-12 Art Show will now be Thursday, JUNE 7th from 6:30-8:30 PM. Please come and celebrate our students’ creative achievements and enjoy the wonderful works of art. Each student from K-6th grade will have 2 pieces of artwork displayed throughout the halls from outside the Art room down to the cafeteria. The 7th- 12th grade students will show their work in the large gym. Throughout the year Mrs. Warner and I have introduced a variety of art material. Here are some of the different techniques and knowledge our students have been cultured in: abstract expressionism, American Indians, ancient civilizations, batiking, biomes, ceramics, China, color theory, computer graphics, contemporary artists, cubism, 2-d design, drawing, elements of art, landscapes, metal tooling, perspective, portraiture, positive/negative space, principles of design, printmaking, painting, radial symmetry, realism, right brain drawing, sculpture, sewing, surrealism, watercolor and weaving to name a few. Please come and view what we have learned in K-12 Art class.

Attention all artistic talents in the community

Please show off your creative side in the community art display during the Cincy Art show. It is worth to have the students see how adults “release” their creativity. There are many ways to show your artistic side: drawing, painting, sewing, quilting, carpentry works either built or carved into, basket weaving, cross-stitch, the list can go on and on. These pieces can be done from any time in your adult life. If interested in showing your piece(s) @ the art show please give me a call @ 863-3200 or e-mail @ [email protected] Hope to see you @ the Art Show on June 7th! Submitted by: Nicole Fabian

Healthy Second Graders

Would you have guessed that 19 second graders could walk 427 miles in three weeks? Well, Mrs. Rice’s second graders did just that! Along with logging the number of steps we took during the school day hours using pedometers, we introduced healthy eating throughout the five major food groups. In addition, we spent time reading books, discussing, and creat-ing projects that reflected tips on staying safe and healthy. Throughout the three weeks we took daily 10 minute walks around the school building, made posters, kept a food journal, and prepared a healthy breakfast of

Scrambled egg taco for breakfast, yum!

Making a healthy egg taco is easy! Just fill the shell with scram-bled eggs, cheese, lettuce, fresh veggies, and salsa if you like.

scrambled egg tacos in the classroom! It was so good! In culmination, at the end of the third week, we to-taled the number of steps all 19 children took and mapped it out. The students were delighted to discover that they walked the distance it would take to go from Binghamton to Utica to Syracuse and almost all the way back to Binghamton. Mrs. Rice’s second graders are a healthy bunch!!

Art on DisplaY Locally

Cincy Art Students have been busy creating amazing art work! Art students are currently having their work displayed at Simple Pleasure's Bakery. The show is called "Food For Thought" and is all about food! The bakery created beautiful cupcakes for art students to eat and be inspired by. The students then created wonderful cupcake and dessert paintings. The art is fun and imaginative. Works include watercolors, acrylic paintings, pastel drawings, and palette knife paintings. The show is also a way to help gather food for the local food pantry. There is a basket for donations so stop down and lend a hand to your community. The show opening was a great success. The bakery provided amazing, homemade cookies and punch. the artwork was spectacular and the Cortland Standard even came and did a story on the show. Several

The Cincinnatus Central School District works to convey information to students, parents, businesses and community members in a variety of ways. One major source of information is the school district website which can be found on the Internet at www.cc.cnyric.org.

Another method of communication within the district is this publication, The Lion's Roar, which is produced by students enrolled in the high school course, Computer Publications. The newsletter is published entirely by students and the printing completed by OCM BOCES. In addition to the website and newsletter, there are also a variety of classroom newsletters, grade reports and parent memos sent home via students and/or mail.

The purpose of these communication tools is to share information about our district, to showcase student, faculty, and staff endeavors, as well as provide resources for students, parents, community members and faculty. We welcome input from all of the school community in making this communication more efficient and more valuable. In utilizing new technologies the district may want to post children's work or pictures on our website and/or in district publications. This could include photos, writings, artwork, or videos recorded for our in-house TV station. Parents or guardians who do NOT wish to have their child’s name and/or photograph on the district web site, in student video productions, in the newsletter or other publications, must notify the district in writing of their wishes. This must be done each school year. Please send any related correspondence to:
