Welcome October 20 2013

Welcome to Unley Park Baptist today. It is great to have you with us. If you are new to Unley Park, we appreciate that it can be daunting to walk into a new church, so as much as we can, we want to help you feel at home here.

In the pew in front of you please find a black folder that contains a white care card for you to complete.

There is also a "Welcome Pack" available for you that, among other things, has a special Care Card for you to record your visit and for us to follow up any requests you make. All Care Cards should be "posted" as you leave the church, in the locked box on the table by the "Baptistry Door". 10.00am Morning Worship – Mark Ryan Morning Tea: Morning Tea Next Week: 11.45am 5.00pm

Just a Minute

Rob Waldron writes… Last week I was on a walking holiday in New Zealand with my son Sam. Our plans included spending a day climbing to the highest point on the Routeburn Track. A fairly ambitious 8 hour hike and an even more ambitious climb.

We left early and by lunchtime had reached a hut about 2 hours short of the summit. We shared the hut with a family - husband, wife and 2 young children, and while we were eating they warned us that they had heard conditions further up the track were hazardous with ice and deep snow.

Undeterred, we soon set off again and the warning we had been given proved to be well founded. About half an hour short of the summit the weather began to deteriorate with dark clouds forming, poor visibility and snow falling. It became obvious to both of us that the only sensible thing to do was to turn around and head down off the mountain.

On our descent we sheltered for a while in the hut where we had lunched and caught up again with the young family. When I told them of our failure to reach the summit the husband made a comment which has stayed with me. He said, 'This is our summit'. He was inferring that with heavy packs and 2 young children the furthest they could hope to climb was to the hut, therefore it was their summit. A few years ago I was on another walking holiday in Tasmania including a climb up Tasmania's highest mountain. I was with my son Tim and on arrival at Cradle Mountain I parked by Dove Lake to organise our packs before setting off. In front of the car parked adjacent to us was seated a lady, aged in her mid-forties, and she was there just soaking up the view. She was also taking a keen interest in our preparations. I say she was seated, in fact she needed to be seated for she was sitting in a wheel chair. The lady was a paraplegic. What struck me, though, was the look of contentment , appreciation and even excitement as she was entering into our enthusiasm for the walk ahead. On thinking back I wonder what mountains this lady had climbed in her life. What had caused her disability? An accident or illness? Whatever it was she possibly had climbed the mountain of depression, or anger, or bitterness. Maybe the mountain of disappointment with life's ambitions shattered. But looking at the sense of contentment on her face I feel sure if she had climbed up some, or all of those mountains she had conquered their summits. Jesus once said, 'I will never leave you or forsake you'. In life we all have different mountains to climb but whatever mountain you may be climbing at present, remember - you are never climbing alone, and with Jesus alongside he can see you to the summit.

Christmas is coming The TEAR shop is up and running again in the breezeway until Sunday 22nd December. I am going to the USA on the 1st December and staying for Christmas, returning on 28th December. For the last 4weeks the shop is open, Sharon Sampson has kindly agreed to step in to take my place. When Sharon is not available, Lois Smith and Kathy Williams will take Sharon's place. The reason I am making this known is to encourage anyone intending to buy cards as Christmas presents, not to leave everything 'til the last couple of weeks as I will not be here to order more stock. TEAR only provides a small number of each of the cards so I usually have to send for more so you can have the cards of your choice. Last year you generously bought over $2,700 worth of cards, a great effort!! Thank you. I hope we can top that this year and give more many underprivileged people the opportunity to experience the love and care of Jesus through us. Blessings and love, Monica Kennerley.

This coming week we will be finalising our packing, moving everything out of our house, hosting a farewell party for our kids, attending a few farewell parties for different groups of friends and holding a moving sale. We will be very tired by the end of the weekend. Please pray that we will continue to reflect God in all our interactions with each other, our kids and those around us even when our stress levels are at a maximum.

This last week we celebrated SonRise Café’s fourth anniversary! We are so thankful for all the people we have been able to meet and befriend through this ministry and for the lives transformed by the gospel. Please pray that we would continue to entrust all the ministries, outreaches, finances, staff, customers and the future of the café to God and His perfect will.

This afternoon, Owen and David are planning to have a BBQ with university students. Pray that this would be a great time of fellowship and fun for all of them, and that Owen and David would have opportunity to share on a deeper level with these young people.

To continue the church’s goal to “build church community

through integrating newcomers and practicing hospitality”, we are planning another Hospitality Sunday

and would encourage you, our church family, to participate.

Entertaining Angels - Hospitality Sunday Sunday 10th November 2013

We would like you to meet together over a meal with those you may not know and maybe even others you do. In order to facilitate this Annette Lawrence, Suzanne Stanley Smith, Heather Waldron and Garry Gooden will allocate guests to hosts. We therefore need both HOSTS and GUESTS! In fact we need more guests than hosts – so please don’t feel embarrassed about nominating to be guests. If you have any questions please see Heather Waldron, Annette Lawrence or Garry Gooden.
