Welcome to our OCTOBER edition of LINK-Magazine.
Really like this time of year as we start looking forward to Halloween and Bonfire Night in November, it’s still a magical time for communities to get out and explore traditions and enjoy great local events. Don’t forget have a happy Halloween and attend an organised event for Bonfire Night - Be Safe.
LINK-Magazine is the only FREE magazine that delivers to all of FY5 and will always be free. As LINK Magazine is supported by 100’s of local businesses, as LINK provides cost effective advertising and mass coverage with our 6 magazines.
LINK relies on local contact and communities to provide local information of interest, events and useful local stories we are happy to print most of this for free, so if you have something of interest that would be useful to FY5 readers then get in touch or email on the details below.
We are working on our November and December editions now so don’t forget to send us your details for Christmas and New Year events, to let people know what going on in advance. LINK will get the message out where other media can’t.
Congratulations LINK-Spotter Susan Atkinson of Blackpool who won our ‘Where am I?’ Competition. £50 is on its way to you.

n Cleveleys Time CapsuleStep back 84 years in time on Cleveleys Prom.
We had an email this week at Visit Cleveleys about the contents of a time capsule that was believed to have been buried when the old promenade had been built almost 100 years ago.
Ken Harcombe is one of the volunteers from Coastwatch at Rossall Point, and he’d been reading about the first development of the prom at Cleveleys in 1927. Apparently, in the September of that year a time capsule had been built somewhere with items of interest from the era. Ken wanted to know if had ever been found, and more to the point what were the contents, and what had happened to them!
That set off an investigation on
the Visit Cleveleys Facebook page, where our intrepid readers joined in the trail. Mike Pollard provided the first photo showing what was left of it.
A Ralph Smedley (RIP) had told Mike that the capsule was in here, and another possible site was the tall column opposite Jubilee Gardens. The contractors looked in there too when the sea defence works started, but nothing was found. Mike understood that it was placed inside the foundation stone for the 1927 Cleveleys prom by the then Cllr Rowbotham, which was a little monument at the top of Kingsway about 4 feet high. The oak lead lined sealed casket contained posters, town planning maps and newspapers.
So the trail then turned to Wyre Council, with a word in the ear
of the engineers. The story of the time capsule had come up in 2005 when the sea defence works started and after much investigation it was found at the boundary with Blackpool, although as Mike said, initial reports had placed it near Jubilee Gardens.
Unfortunately, it appears that the time capsule had been opened in the 1980s before the whole monument was moved from opposite Jubilee Gardens, to its last place the Blackpool boundary. When it was opened in 2005, it was empty.
The monument is in storage at the Wyre depot at Fleetwood, and there are no plans at this stage to include it in the new works.

Blackpool to London: Cycle for Christie In August 2012 Andrew Halliwell and Mark Kelly, an Optical Assistant and the Lab Manager at Spec Savers in Cleveleys will be cycling from Blackpool to London to raise money for the Christie Cancer hospital in Manchester.
The reason we are doing this is because we have a colleague at work whose teenage daughter is attending the hospital for the second time in her life. She is currently under going Stem Cell therapy and is doing well. We are doing this bike ride to raise £1,500 a small target, we are raising the money so that the wonderful work that the Christie does can continue.
We are looking to raise as much money as we can and are after as much support, both financially and otherwise we can get.
People can donate to our cause in a number of ways. People can text BPLD51 £1,2,5,10,20 to 70070. They can contact us via facebook by searching for Blackpooltolondon:cycletochristie or they can come see us at Spec Savers in Cleveleys. You can also contact me directly on 07969 667 997.

The good news is that one piece of local road works has been completed! The new substation at Hillhouse Industrial Estate has been energised and the turbines have all been installed off Walney Island. They are due to be energised any time now – weather permitting! You can see exclusive photos on the website.
We’ve had some horrendous summer weather at Cleveleys and instead of an Indian summer mid September brought knee deep snow! Actually it was the foam that blows off the sea in certain weather conditions, created by the aftermath of Hurricane Katia on its way from America. On the high street, the Union Jack has been painted out on Victoria Market, and the Crest cafe looks like it’s about ready to re-open.
If you subscribe for weekly email updates you’ll not miss anything – with varied news and something for everyone. Find out about local shows from community groups like Phoenix Youth Theatre. We’ve been to see the new managers of the Wyreside Visitor Centre and hear about their plans, learnt how our local police operate and keep the streets safe, and all about local shops and businesses.
Don’t forget to send your community news to appear on www.visitCleveleys.info - a one-stop-shop for all the grassroots stuff that you want to know. Just email [email protected]

Paul Gailey ‘Diary of a local Councillor’
Paul Galley is a Councillor for Anchorsholme in Blackpool and each month he writes a
weekly diary of what he has been up to.
Thursday: Today I was invited to attend the launch of the new Bombardier Trams which come into use next year and I have to say they are very impressive. They are low floor trams which will make it so much easier for the elderly, the disabled and people with pushchairs to access as there are no more steps and plenty of room to store a wheel or push chair. As well as the new trams, Blackpool Transport have modernised 10 double decker trams with new doors and will be keeping some of the vintage trams and the illumination trams so there is importantly still a place for tradition in Blackpool’s new tram fleet. The key now is to get the line extended up Talbot Road and to connect it to a public transport interchange at the railway station where it would be possible to catch a tram a train and a bus all from the same place. I’m lobbying hard for this and will not stop until I’ve achieved it (however long it takes).
Friday: I am a member of an organisation called ACT which is a group involving a number of local people from around Anchorsholme working to bring lots of different groups and people together from youth groups to groups for people who are retired. We had a good meeting at St Teresa’s Church Hall, to discuss our official launch event which will be on Friday 14th October from 3pm to 8pm. The event will include all the different groups having stands allowing them to promote themselves from dancing to junior bingo. We will also have the fire brigade there and people from the new Neighbourhood North Team, along with myself and Councillor Tony Williams, so if you have any spare time on Friday 14th and are thinking of joining a group in Anchorsholme, please do come along to St Teresa’s Church Hall and you will be guaranteed a warm welcome.
Saturday/Sunday: I spent the entire weekend finalising my report on why the Lauderdale Tram crossing should not be closed and then printing & binding ten copies so that I could hand them to every member of the Blackpool Executive (the equivalent of a cabinet). It’s over 70 pages long and I spent the entire month of August writing it, it’s something I’m very proud of and I will be putting a copy in the Health Centre if anyone wishes to read it. It details why the crossing shouldn’t close, who uses it, the effects of closure and the supportive opinions of the emergency services.
Monday: Today I held a meeting with someone from Neighbourhood North to discuss Councillor Tony Williams and my plans to improve key area’s of Anchorsholme, notably Anchorsholme Park, the corner of grass between Luton Road and Anchorsholme Lane East along with planting more trees and flowers in different parts of Anchorsholme. I’m really pleased to confirm that with our ward budget we are going to build an archway at Anchorsholme Park similar to the ones that have been built at Eastpines Park, along with a noticeboard similar to one seen at Devenshire Gardens. This is just the start of our plans over the next four years to improve Anchorsholme Park and I’m so excited about it’s future. As for the corner of grass at Luton Road and Anchorsholme Lane we are going to hopefully build a rockery, with flowers and a small welcome to Anchorsholme sign along with some seating. Our aim is to improve the visual look of the area whilst putting Anchorsholme on the map. This will just be the start of our flower and tree planting programme for Anchorsholme and again it’s something I’m really excited about it.
Tuesday: This evening I spent time preparing myself for tomorrow night’s Town Hall debate about the possible closure of the Lauderdale Tram Crossing, we have only been given twenty minutes to debate the issue which will not be easy as I could talk all evening about it. After the Lauderdale debate, we have a general debate about other issues in Blackpool ranging from care to crime. It is vital to make sure you prepare for such meetings the best you can, as a missed detail can leave you with a very red face on the night.
Wednesday: The morning saw me call the bingo at our bingo group at St Teresa’s Church Hall which I really enjoyed. We are beginning to establish a really good group on Wednesday Mornings and everyone is welcome, the group normally starts at 10.15 and finishes around 12pm. There is another bingo/community group that I would also highly recommend and that is the Over 50’s club at Sevenoaks Drive, again it’s a friendly group and does some excellent work in the community, when ever I get a chance I try and turn up to their meetings on Monday and Wednesday afternoons. In the afternoon I had a meeting at the Town Hall and at 6pm we had the debate about the crossing. Again it was great to see so many people from Anchorsholme attending the debate and we all witnessed an excellent speech from a member of the public in support of keeping the crossing open. Both Councillor Tony Williams and myself spoke and urged the Executive to listen to what the people wanted and keep the crossing open and said that if they voted to close it at their meeting the following week, it would not be the end and we would appeal the decision. Ironically on the day of the debate the crossing finally reopened, our mission now must be to make sure it stays open. The debate finished around 9pm and I was back home for 9.30pm, where I spoke to a few residents about the debate and a subsequent radio broadcast they would be doing on the breakfast show of Radio Lancashire. Anchorsholme really does have some great people and I’m so proud to be their representative.
Many thanks Paul GalleyCouncillor for Anchorsholme
