Thank you to all who joined us on the LCA Christmas float in the Centreville Christmas parade – we won 2nd place! The parents and students were full of Christmas cheer, and our little snowmen delivered treats to the parade watchers. Thank you to the Mood family and all who helped prepare the float – it was magical!

The upcoming board meetings are Wednesday, January 7, and February 4, at 7 PM in the Safe Harbor Conference room. All are welcome to attend for the Open Session portion of the meeting. Board Minutes can be found on the website.

Carrie Ann Barrow Mrs. Barrow joins Lighthouse Christian Academy as the 7th and 8th grade Logic teacher and the 10th grade debate teacher. Mrs. Barrow taught Logic I previously at

Christiana Homeschool Academy in Westminster,

MD and has also homeschooled her children periodically over the past 3 years. She has a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Salisbury State University. Mrs. Barrow is a mother of 3 children, two of which attend LCA. Her son Tommy Barrow is a fifth grade student and her son Adam Barrow is an 8th grade homeschool student who takes History and Science at LCA.

Loris Nebbia Mrs. Nebbia was born in Brooklyn, New York, and spent her childhood in Allendale, New Jersey. Loris began her undergraduate studies at St. John’s College. There she met her husband, Karl Nebbia, a student at the U.S. Naval Academy. After they were married, they lived in many places while Karl served in the U.S. Marine Corps, eventually returning to Annapolis, where their four —Eric, Joseph, Valerie, and Karl—were raised.

Loris taught literature and composition for many years at Annapolis Area Christian School (AACS). It was here that Loris found inspiration for the personalities that inhabit the halls of CCS, the fictional high school in her first novel Solomon’s Puzzle. Her experiences helping students learn were some of the most treasured of her life.

During her time at AACS, Loris obtained her master’s in teaching from the UMBC, and was named Teacher of the Year in 2002. She was twice honored with the school’s Valedictorian/Salutatorian Award, for which students chose the teacher who showed the most concern for students’ wellbeing.

At the center of Loris’ love for her community is the gift of faith she received at age seventeen. Three years after her father’s death, during a time of unhappiness and misdirection, a friend gave her a Bible. She drank in the words of

Matthew 11, “Come to me all you who are weary and burdened,” as if they referred directly to her. That very moment she prayed and felt faith drop into her heart “like a living and luminescent pearl.” This faith has shaped her perception of family, friends, and students. Now a grandmother to eight children, Loris gives her time to them, to her adult children and to gardening, quilting, reading certain books, and writing. She is thrilled and honored to be able to serve Lighthouse Christian Academy’s students and their families this year.

This school year, the Teacher Appreciation Committee decided to forego Teacher Appreciation Weeks in an effort to minister more directly to the teacher's individual needs. You will notice e-mails that come from Mrs. Berger with "Teacher Appreciation Luncheon" in the subject line. Please click on the link contained in that e-mail so you can be directed to a sign-up for food or paper products or set up, etc. These luncheons are for specific days, chosen to fit well with our teacher schedules and desires. Please mark your calendar for Monday, January 26, as that will be our next Teacher Luncheon. Also, you will receive an e-mail several days

before your child’s teacher’s birthday with an attached Wish List. Thank you for all of the love and support you show our teachers - they feel so appreciated by all of your displays of kindness!

School Visits Visiting your child: LCA families are welcome to check in on their children at any time. This is one of the many wonderful aspects of our school. Office visit hours: Office visit hours help Mrs. Whiting coordinate her daily responsibilities and management and growth of the school. She is available every day from 8:30-9:00 AM and 2:30-3:15 PM, or by scheduled appointment. Please contact the school at (410) 643-3034 for appointments outside of these times.

Entrance Door The school now has a video monitoring and remote control system to unlock the main entrance door. Please push the call button on the intercom next to the door and you will be “buzzed” in. It is expected that this new system will save much time and energy on the parts of Mrs. Whiting and Mrs. Berger, who are thrilled to finally have it installed!

Most of our school families come to LCA by word of mouth – that’s YOUR friends, neighbors,

customers, coworkers, church friends, Boy Scout buddies, gym partners, Facebook friends… some folks have found us even because of your license

plate covers! We have planned an enrollment push for this Winter/Spring, so remember that

anyone you refer comes back as a minimum of a $300 tuition credit to your account!

Sunday, February 1: 1:30-4:30 PM

Tuesday, April 14, 9 AM – 2 PM Wednesday, May 6, 9 AM – 2 PM

Mark your calendars for the annual State of the School meeting on Monday, January 26, at 7 PM in the sanctuary. This is an opportunity to know how we’re doing, where we’re going, what’s in store for 2015-2016, and receive your 2015-2016 re-enrollment information (and incentives!). Please plan for at least one parent attend.

February 13, 2015

By now you probably know that your child is working on a science fair project! If you have any questions, direct them to your child’s homeroom teacher or Mr. Covington. We will have a panel of expert judges and an awards ceremony the evening of February 13. Grandparents’ Day is the same day, so if you have family visiting for that, invite them to stay for the Science Fair! It is amazing to see how inquisitive and well-prepared our students are!

The Hurricanes basketball season is underway! Come out and cheer on our boys as they take the court. We are looking forward to a winning season!
