Page 2 - Job - Part Time Computer Assistant - Southfield Public Library
This position is responsible in assisting the public in using the Library’s computers, printers, copiers, scanners and fax machines. Computer Assistants are responsible for assisting the public in using various software applications in the Computer Labs, assisting card holders in signing on to the public computers through our time management system, and issuing guest passes to non-card holders. This position is also responsible for maintaining, setting up, and resolving issues with the Library’s computers and troubleshooting hardware and software problems. Computer Assistants perform basic maintenance on equipment, clean equipment, and perform other technological support duties as assigned.
Job Requirements: Strong commitment to positive and polite public service. Excellent communication skills. Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Windows. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite software. Computer Lab and/or Library experience preferred. Experience setting up and maintaining PC Hardware. Software installation experience preferred. Ability to work independently after training is complete. Strong problem solving skills. Detail oriented.
Physical Requirements: Applicants must be able to lift 25 lbs., bend, push and stand for periods of time.
Hours: Up to 19 hours per week
The Library is open evenings and weekends
Availability on some nights and/or weekends is required

Reports to: Head of Technology Services or Designee
Supervises: Computer Assistants, volunteers
Full time position, 40 hours per week. Excellent benefits, including individual and family medical, dental,
and vision insurance; 457b retirement plan with matching contribution; paid vacation, sick leave
and holidays. Salary: $42,000-$45,000, depending on qualifications and experience.
Job summary:
• Oversees performance of and manages the functioning of the library’s network infrastructure,
including network servers, peripherals and software applications, works with The Library Network
(TLN) technicians to ensure proper functioning of library’s integrated library system.
• Responsible for staff and public computer hardware and software.
• Responsible for providing public computing services which are easy for library users to access
while maintaining both patron privacy and security of network.
• Responsible for data integrity, system back up and security.
• Assists with creation of technical training and support materials for staff, as well as day to day
assistance of staff in routine troubleshooting of software and equipment.
• Supervises and staffs weekly drop-in computer lab.
• Provides work direction and training for computer assistants.
• Working closely with the Head of Technology Services, ensures effective communication of
technology-related problems and resolutions to staff and public.
• Work requires considerable use of independent judgment and initiative.
Summary of Requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree in a computer-related field or five years related experience. • Extensive Microsoft Windows network administration experience. • Knowledge of Microsoft Office. • Firewall administration experience, Cisco experience preferred. • Knowledge of securing public computers while providing patrons with easy access. • Strong oral and written communication skills, including the ability to explain technology concepts
to users with a variety of skill levels. • Ability to establish effective working relationships and use good judgment to prioritize duties and
tasks, while demonstrating initiative and resourcefulness when dealing with the public and fellow employees.
• Curious attitude and ability to remain calm in the face of techno-stress. Desired Qualifications:
• Experience working in a library setting. • Experience supervising employees or teaching.

Romulus Public Library Part-time Library Assistant (20 hours/week)
Job duties:
Assist patrons of all ages at the Circulation Desk on the phone and in person.
Assist patrons with computer questions.
Handle cash transactions for overdue fines, copying and other fees.
Provide reference assistance and readers advisory.
Process incoming and outgoing interlibrary loan items.
Assist with projects.
Other duties as assigned. Job requirements:
Minimum of two years of college coursework required; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
Minimum of one year of library experience, preferably in a public services position.
Computer literacy including use of databases, MS Word and Excel required; experience with SIRSI Workflows or other library computer software preferred.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to provide superior customer service to library users of all ages.
Ability to operate standard office equipment such as a copy machine.
Ability to work cooperatively with library staff in a team environment.
Ability to produce neat, accurate and timely work within an established timeframe.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Must be able to lift and push 25 pounds Hours: Monday 3 - 8 p.m., Wednesday 3 - 8 p.m., Thursday 9:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m., alternating Friday/Saturday 12 – 5 p.m. (20 hours/week) Salary: $10.50/hr.
