BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP PUBLIC LIBRARY

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY AVAILABLE

POSITION TITLE: Adult Services Page DEPARTMENT: Adult Services, reporting to Assistant Department Head RESPONSIBILITIES: Direct public service: provides positive, pleasant professional

services to staff and public; directs patrons to appropriate staff for assistance; retrieves materials for patrons and staff. Indirect public service: sorts and shelves materials, reads shelves to ensure accurate order so that materials can be found by patrons; follows direction of supervisor; assists department staff as needed; maintains department supplies.

REQUIREMENTS: Minimum: Able to lift, bend, and stoop to shelve materials; able to use

step stool to shelve materials; able to push or pull carts weighing at least 20 pounds; able to visually review materials and discern voice and audible tones. Desire to serve the public in a positive manner. Computer/keyboard experience. Desirable: Public library work experience.

HOURS: Part-time, approximately 10-12 hours weekly, including evenings,

Saturdays, and some Sunday hours. WAGE & BENEFITS: $8.90 per hour with increase possible upon completion of 3 month orientation. APPLICATION, COVER LETTER & RESUME DUE: January 20. A clerical skills test must accompany your application,

A TYPICAL WORK WEEK FOR THE PUBLIC SERVICES PAGE MAY INCLUDE:

o shelve books in fiction section or alphabetically by author’s last name and under the author by title.

o retrieve magazines from magazine storage area

o push heavily loaded cart of materials from Circulation into work area

o straighten all of Reference section of materials

o shelve books in non-fiction by Dewey number and Cutter (author) letters

o shift several ranges of shelving to make room for more books

o direct patron to appropriate desk for librarian’s assistance

o take reading group books to lower level for shelving in compact shelves

o read shelves to put materials back in order

o photocopy flyers for public

o fill notepaper and pencil holders at each computer terminal

o cut recycled paper into notepaper size

o load materials on to book carts

o assist staff at programs by handing out fliers, showing movies, assisting presenters

o look up books in circulation module for statistics

o check booklists for status of material

Business & Marketing Librarian

The Clarkston Independence District Library seeks a creative, enthusiastic librarian to join a positive,

team-oriented work environment to interface directly with the local business community and guide the

library’s marketing strategies.

Hours: 40 hours per week, includes some evenings and weekends

Salary: $37,000-$48,000 depending on qualifications and experience

Benefits: Health, dental, and optical insurance; Disability and life insurance; Vacation, sick and

personal days; Retirement plan.

Reports to: Head of Adult Services

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

• Work closely with the Clarkston Area Chamber of Commerce to create relationships with local

businesses and develop collections and resources to serve the local business community

• Design a variety of programs and activities at the library and off-site to promote the use of

business resources and fulfill local business needs

• Meet with business owners on or off-site, as needed, to help fulfill their research needs

• Assist in educating local businesses about successful marketing techniques

• Develop and guide the library’s marketing strategies, including social media

• Assist patrons in obtaining information in a variety of formats

• Provide readers’ advisory services

• Participate in developing Library policies and procedures

Qualifications:

• MLIS from an ALA accredited institution

• Experience working with a variety of business resources & enthusiastic commitment to

promoting and educating others about them

• Strong organizational and planning skills with the ability to work independently and as part of a team

• Background in advertising and/or marketing

• Confident and engaged in a variety of social media techniques

• Comfortable working and presenting at the library and at off-site locations

• Public library reference desk experience

• Collection development and budget management experience

• Desire and ability to provide excellent customer service

Millage passed! Open again on Fridays, plan to open Sundays in January. Discussion of how to

staff Sundays. Many libraries have all or mostly subs.

Salem Witch trials program this month with Heatherleigh Navarre from the Boston Tea Room.

She is free to FERN, does programs on psychics, tarot cards, etc.

Halloween Spooktacular, kids trick or treat & program after Ferndale city trick or treating ends.

Darlene is serving as interim director

Major renovation. Good tie-in with summer reading theme next year about architecture.

Livingstone Reads – Jaws, programs, monsters of the Great Lakes (fish, invasive species)

Big Read Grant – Love Medicine, lots of Native American history in November

WWI in America Grant – 3 programs, Ohio museum art works from the trenches of WWI

Homeschool program began with an information panel last year with 30 people attending; now

have bimonthly homeschool discussion group with 5 – 12 regular attenders; will go to monthly

program with topics/speaker/resources/ ideas

Music program with John Latini – 45 people, adapts songs to audience

Photo contest 86 entries! Only stipulation is photos have to be taken in Springfield Twp.

Winners determined by public voting. Friends gave 3 prizes for youth, 3 for adult

Author Tobin Buhk coming for True Crime in MI

Local lawyer program about wills with no sales pitch

September national sign up for library card, prize drawing for getting a new card or bringing in

someone who doesn’t have a card

Position Available Part‐time Youth Services Librarian Orion Township Public Library 

  

Position:  Youth Librarian Part‐time     28 hours/wk, includes evening and weekend hours Department:  Youth Services Salary:    $18.70‐$24.62/hr.  

Primary Job Duties: Assist the Head of Youth Services in providing service to children and caregivers, including youth reference, programming, readers’ advisory and collection development and maintenance. Plan and provide programs for preschools in the community, including many outreach visits.  

Required Qualifications: 

MLS from an ALA accredited library school or minimum of 18 credit hours with concentration in youth services 

Prefer early childhood teaching endorsement or at least 2 years working in an early childhood setting  

 Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities  

Coordinate library outreach with public and private preschools 

Knowledge of library materials, reference service, youth literature, readers’ advisory 

Ability to develop creative learning programs for infants through age 12 

Demonstrated knowledge of emergent literacy and brain development in children 

Skills in working with community agencies serving children & their caregivers, including local schools 

Emphasis in public service with strong ability to speak and write effectively 

Ability to work independently and take initiative in developing services and programs 

Ability to effectively use and teach current technology to patrons of all ages 

Skilled in searching automated catalog, Internet, and library databases 

Excellent Microsoft Office and other computer skills 

Ability to promote and maintain effective relationships with other staff and to work as a team 

Strong organizational and time management skills
