Engimono are lucky charms that carry a variety of prayers such as wishes for good harvest, wishes for good business and wishes for the health of the family. Engimono are often given at New Year events in shrines and temples. Along with talismans and charms, orna-ments with the “Eto”(Chinese zodiac animal) of the year and “Shichifukujin” (the seven Japanese deities that are said to bring good fortune) are sold at shrines and many people buy them for the New Year. Another Engimono is “Mt. Fuji”, which was registered as a World Heritage Site in 2013. In Japan, there is a saying, “Ichi-Fuji, Ni-Taka, San-Nasubi” meaning “First, Mt. Fuji; second, hawks; third, eggplants.” It is said that if you see Mt. Fuji in your fi rst dream of the year (called Hatsuyume), you will have very good luck. This is an example of the way that Mt. Fuji has long been the heart and

There are other kinds of Engimono besides the classic ones. From the many regional ones that have been passed down in different areas of Japan, we will introduce a few simple and charming ones that will make you want to carry one with you. These Engimono can be purchased all over Japan at shops that sell local products and souvenirs or at local government showrooms. Why not buy one as a souvenir of your trip to Japan or as a gift for your friends and family?
This is made to wish for a good harvest. Goma means horse and this Engimono comes from Iwate Prefecture, where people have always cared for horses working on their farms.
Beko means cow. This is a red papier-mâché cow whose head sways. Cows are said to be powerful and hard working and red is consid-ered to be the color which prevents bad luck, therefore this Engimono is said to wish for good health and to keep diseases away.
This is an Engimono to wish for good health. Fukurou means owl in Japanese and owls are said to bring good luck. Also, the color red has long been believed to keep evil spirits away.
Tanuki means raccoon and this Engimono is considered to bring blessings of good business and economic fortune. The most famous one is Shigaraki-yaki or Shigaraki ware, originating from Shiga Prefecture.
Hariko means papier-mâché and Tora means tiger in Japanese. Boy’s Day is an annual celebration held on May 5th, and a baby boy’s fi rst Boy’s Day is called Hatsuzekku. Hariko no Tora are promi-nent in a boy’s Hatsuzekku to wish for his healthy growth, and they are often used as gifts to cele-brate the birth of a boy.
This Engimono is shaped like the wild Eurasian bullfinch, called “Uso” in Japanese. It is used in an event at Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine in Fukuoka Prefecture, and is also sold as a folk craft. “Uso” also means a lie in Japanese and therefore Kiuso is a pun meaning that this Engimono will turn all the bad luck from the past year into a lie and switch it with good luck for this year.
This is a wooden toy with more than 800 years of history in the Kyushu region including Kumamoto Prefecture. Kiji means pheasant. Pheasants are said to bring good luck and this Engimono is used to wish for the healthy growth of a child. It is also called Kiji-guruma.
Shisa are lion-like statues of mythological ani-mals that keeps evil spirits away. They have been passed down through countless generations in Okinawa Prefecture and decorate the gate or roof-top of houses to keep away any evil spirits. Cute figurines and trinkets have turned the ferocious-looking fi gure into a likable character, and made it a popular item.
soul of the Japanese people. It is not only the highest mountain in Japan, but a sacred symbol and where Gods are considered to exist. Other famous Engimono include the “Maneki-neko”, a beckoning cat figure which often decorates shops and restau-rants and is said to bring good business. Maneki-neko can be made of many ma-terials including pottery. Another widely known Engimono is the “Daruma” doll, designed to represent the founder of Zen Buddhism. People love this stern-looking ornament made of red papier-mâché. Daruma are manufactured mainly in the areas between Tohoku and Kanto regions including Takasaki City in Gumma Prefecture. Each area of Japan has their own unique Engimono that have been passed down for generations and were originally made by traditional methods such as papier-mâché, wood carving and pottery. These days, Engimono come in a variety of forms from ornaments made with traditional methods to key chains, mobile phone straps and stationery goods, which are all sold at souvenir shops. These souvenirs will not only bring you luck but they will be a perfect reminder of your trip to Japan.

Most people spend more time planning their next holiday than they do planning their financial future. As money plays a role in everything we do it is important for you to think about your wealth and how you can grow it.
Building wealth is all about investing. The goal of investing is to grow your money over a long period of time and involves investing in assets that provide both income and growth, for example shares, managed funds and property. Saving is not the same as investing as this normally involves a shorter time frame and investing in low risk assets that provide income only, for example term deposits.
As the timeframe for investing is longer than for saving and the goal is capital growth it generally involves taking on some risk. Investment risk refers to the chance of some loss in asset value at some time during the investment time frame. However historically assets recover from losses but they key is to have diversification across different asset classes to help minimise the risk of loss. The main asset classes are shares, property, fixed interest and cash. The goal of diversification is that if the value of one asset class falls this will be offset by a gain in a different asset class.
Another key element of wealth building is to start early and invest regularly. By starting early you gain the benefit of compounding. Compounding is best i l lustrated by an example. If you invested $1,000 for one year at 5% and received $50 income at the end of the year you would have $1,050. If you then invested the $1,050 for one year at 5% at the end of the year you would have $1,102.50. The additional $2.50 you have is the compound return. Whilst this may not seem much if you
did this for ten years you would have received an additional amount of $128.91 over the period.
When building wealth it is also necessary to consider debt. Debt can be used to build wealth but only where the asset that is purchased grows in value. Negative gearing is a term used where the cost of the debt, the interest, is more than the income you receive from the asset. As such you effectively make a loss which is tax deductible. However if the asset does not grow in value by at least the amount of the loss you have not invested wisely.
If you would like to find out more about building wealth we are conducting a free seminar on 19 March in Sydney. Please contact us if you would like to receive further information about this.

MELBOURNE, Feb 18 AAPToll Holdings shareholders, including former
boss Paul Little, are set for a windfall after Japan Post made a $6.5 billion takeover for the Australian transport and logistics company.
Mr Little, who drove Toll's rapid expansion in the Asia-Pacifi c region, will reap nearly $340 million should he accept the offer and sell his fi ve per cent stake.
Japan Post has offered $9.04 for each Toll share, a massive 49 per cent premium to Toll's closing price on Tuesday of $6.08.
If the deal succeeds, the combined company will be one of the top five players in global logistics.
Toll's board of directors has unanimously r ecommended shareho lders accep t the offer, which chairman Ray Horsburgh says represents full value for Toll shares.
Shares in Toll soared $2.87, or 47 per cent, to $8.95.
"It is a great transaction for our shareholders, for our customers and for all of our staff and employees," Mr Horsburgh said on Wednesday.
Kimber Capital head of research Greg Fraser said it was a good offer, especially considering Toll's "fairly ordinary" fi nancial performance.
"I don't think anyone will say no to it. It's a huge premium," he said.
The announcement coincided with Toll reporting a 22 per cent slide in fi rst half profi t to $134.3 million because of challenging economic conditions, especially the slowdown in the resources sector.
In addition to the Japan Post offer, should it succeed, Toll shareholders will be entitled to a fully franked interim dividend of 13 cents per share in March.
Japan Post wants to use Toll as a platform for expansion in Asia, Europe and North America, to offset a decline in demand for postal services in Japan.

Mr Horsburgh said Australia's recent free trade agreement with Japan would create tremendous new opportunities for the combined business.
Japan Post's skills in parcel delivery would also make Toll more competitive against Australia Post.
Toll would retain its name and continue to be run out of Melbourne as a division spearheading Japan Post's global operations.
Mr Horsburgh said Japan Post had made an incomplete and non-binding proposal to Toll in January.
After Japan Post examined Toll's books, a formal binding offer was made on Tuesday.

CANBERRA, Feb 11 AAPThe Abbott government has delivered on a
2013 election promise to put foreign investment in agricultural land under greater scrutiny.
And it's promised to soon make changes relating to residential real estate.
The Foreign Investment Review Board threshold for screening agricultural land purchases will be dropped from $252 million to $15 million from March 1.
The new threshold wi l l apply to the cumulative value of agricultural land owned by the foreign investor, including the proposed
purchase.Speaking at a sheep farm near Canberra on
Wednesday, Prime Minister Tony Abbott said the government would also set up a foreign ownership register of agricultural land.
From July 1, the Australian Taxation Office will start collecting information on all new foreign investment in agricultural land, regardless of value.
Mr Abbott said new free trade deals with Japan, Korea and China made Australia a vastly more attractive investment destination now than 18 months ago.
But it was important that foreign investment was transparent and in the national interest, he said.
"This is going to help to reassure the Australian public that the foreign investment we need is right for us," Mr Abbott said.
National Farmers Federation president Brent Finlay said the move would ensure a fact-based discussion around who owns what.
"We know that 99 per cent of Australian farms are owned by Australian families," he said.
"We need to see who's buying what so that we can have an informed discussion."

Treasurer Joe Hockey said there needed to be better enforcement of the rules for foreign purchases of existing homes so young people were not priced out of the market.
"It is clearly an issue in our metropolitan areas that there is seemingly an increase in unlawful acquisitions of existing residential real estate by foreign persons," he said.
An inquiry into foreign purchase of real estate called for higher administration fees for foreign buyers and a register of all Australian real estate in foreign hands.
