Will the new 33x fields be displayed; and if so, how?

Will all three fields be displayed?

(337 and sometimes 336 are left out)

How will they be displayed?

In what order?

Where will they be placed?

How will records with multiple 336/337/338 be displayed?

Display the controlled vocabulary terms “as is” from the MARC record?

Display replacement terms, truncated terms, or other alternative text?

Display with icons?

If the 33x fields are not displayed, will they be used for filtering/limiting searches in conjunction with info in the Leader and controlled fields?

What is the impact on users if the catalog has a mix of records – some with GMDs and some with 33x fields?

Will GMDs be replaced with 33x fields?

How do item-level data/item types/icons in the records affect the 33x display decision?

Who are the stakeholders in the decision of how to display the 33x fields in the OPAC?

8. Construct a GMD out of fields 338-336

Do not construct a GMD for [volume : text] if 337 is ‘unmediated.’ (Patrons are not used to seeing a GMD now for a monograph.)

If there is more than one |a term in either 338 or 336, separate those terms by comma-space.

Some of the 336 terms could be shortened if desired.

33x DisplaySnapshotSummary

Sept. ‘12

Labels for 33x fields vary- 336 – “Content type”- 337 – “Media type” or “Medium”- 338 – “Carrier type” or “Format”- Alternative method: no labels for 33x fields; instead,

include as part of “Description” Placement of 33x in display varies

- Most display 33x after/near/as part of “Description” / “Physical description”

If the OPAC includes both full and brief records, 33x fields most often display only in full

Of libraries that include 33x fields in MARC records:

Many are choosing to suppress display of 33x fields

If 33x fields are displayed, most OPACs show all three 33x fields, in numerical order
