What are they?

• FRBR is a conceptual model– How information is described and organized

• RDA & AACR2 are content standards– Which information to record and how to

record it

• MARC is a communication format– a ‘package’ for recording the information

More on MARC

• Created to be a carrier for data

• Tags, indicators and subfield codes are for machine use

• Developed alongside AACR (and AACR2)

MARC ≠ AACR2

Talking in MARC?

• “245 a” OR

“title proper of the manifestation”?

• Using the new vocabulary helps

• Thinking AACR2 means doing AACR2

• Thinking RDA means doing RDA

MARC and RDA

• RDA covers the recording of data elements that can be assembled to describe resources

• MARC bibliographic and authority formats provide one way of assembling many (but not all) RDA data elements at the moment.
