What are grains?

Grains are foods that come from rice, oats, wheat, barley, or corn plants.

Grains are sometimes called the staple of our diet—we eat more grains than almost any other kind of food. The average person should eat 6 1-ounce servings of grains per day. This equals 6 slices of bread.

Bread, pasta, rice, and cereal come from grains.

Grains Have It All

Grains have it all: vitamins, minerals and fiber

Foods that are high in fiber make you feel full, improve your digestion, and may help your heart.

Grains contain Vitamin B which help us in all kinds of ways.

Enriched grains contain iron and folic acid which makes our blood strong.

Whole Grains contain the entire grain kernel which includes the bran, the germ and the endosperm.

Refined Grains have been run through the mill to remove the bran and the germ. This makes them lighter and softer. But, in the process, they lose a lot of nutrients.

Myplate.gov says to eat six 1-oz. servings per day, but Make half of your grains whole grains!
