Mission Statement
Educating and serving
children and adults with
autism to achieve their
highest level of
independence in their
home, school, and
community.
Philosophy
The Illinois Center for
Autism believes that each
individual is unique and
defined by possibilities and
not limitations. Individuals
have the right to education,
training, and services
specifically designed to
meet their needs in the
least restrictive
environment.
A Message from Our Executive Director and Board Chair
Dear Friends,
42 years ago the Illinois Center for Autism was founded in the
basement of a church with a handful of children who literally had no
place else to go. In 1977 ICA became a beacon on a hill offering hope
to families that their children were more than the “experts” believed.
Since its founding, ICA’s Day School Program has exclusively served
children who could not have their needs met in any available public
school setting.
42 years later our mission remains the same but the expectations are
higher. Our obligation is not only to provide education and training
but to prepare every student and adult client for the next step that life
places in front of them. For some that means developing the
academic and vocational skills to prepare them for post-secondary
education or career development. For others, it means developing
the life skills necessary to fully access all the resources our
community offers.
The past year has seen the opening of our Practical Assessment
Exploration System (PAES) work development lab. The PAES lab
allows students to explore dozens of potential careers and develop
the vocational and life skills necessary to be ready for that next step.
This past year has also seen the addition of a full-time master’s
degree prepared Autism Curriculum Specialist. This new position is
focusing on curriculum selection and staff training necessary to
ensure every student has the opportunity to meet their full potential.
The above are just two examples of how the Illinois Center for Autism
is rising to meet our community’s expectations. None of this is
possible without the dedication and support of our staff, donors, and
volunteers. Your dedication and support makes it possible for ICA to
continue to be a beacon on a hill offering hope to those who most
need it.
We are blessed to lead an agency with over 100 dedicated employees
and hundreds of committed supporters and volunteers. With no end
to demand for services in sight and a need to provide increasingly
focused supports, we need the good will and support of our
community as much now as ever. If you haven’t had the chance
previously, please call us to schedule a visit and see and feel the ICA
difference.

Special Day School – 89% of students experienced fewer
mental, emotional and/or behavioral symptoms compared to
prior year.
ICA’s Special Day School program provides an
opportunity to not only educate but encourage our
126 children, ages 3-21, they are so much more than
their diagnoses. Not only do we believe, but they
must believe in all their possibilities. They share
announcements and the Pledge of Allegiance at the
beginning of each day, provide tours for our guests,
decorate our hallways with artwork, design t-shirts
for our events and make each day unique and exciting.
We are approved by the Illinois State Board of Education and conduct
year-round programming using evidence-based
practices.
Adult Services – 85% of our Adult Clients were
able to maintain/improve an increased level of
self-sufficiency.
Our Adult Services Program instills a “can do” attitude in
the 36 adults who are enrolled in our program. We
provide a structured, supportive atmosphere with
vocational skills training & volunteerism. These
opportunities include on-the–job training in our
business establishment, working in the community at
one of the businesses with witch we have developed a
relationship or volunteering. We create an interactive atmosphere,
building social skills and community engagement where adults continue to
grow and prosper.
Client/Family Support Services – 85% of clients
report improvement in their self-esteem.
Our Client/Family Support Program provides
home based services to more than 114 individuals
and their families. This includes emotional sup-
port, advocacy, resources, training and case coor-
dination. Our services are available to our
clients and their families as well as for the needs
of the communities we serve in southern Illinois.

Spotlight on PAES
We’ve expanded our 29 year old Transition Program to
incorporate PAES (Practical Assessment and Exploration
System), a curriculum that provides training in basic
generalizable vocational and life skills that relate to most
careers as well as skills needed for vocational training,
placement and independent living. Data collection allows
assessment of transition age individuals with varying
levels of disabilities. PAES allows for career and life
training, performance-based assessments, career
exploration, and work behavior development. PAES is
designed to support state and federal compliance.
