CELLS IN THE HUMAN BODY
LIVING THINGS are made up of very small units called cells.
CELLS are the basic units of life. Living things can be unicellular or multicellular.
Bacteria - unicellular
Animals - multicellular
All living things have three basic life processes:
CELLS IN THE HUMAN BODY
SENSITIVITY
NUTRITION
REPRODUCTION
NUTRITION Cells obtain nutrients and energy from food. All living things need food for energy and to grow. People and animals eat plants or other animals. Plants use sunlight to make their own food.
SENSITIVITY Cells react to what they perceive around them.
REPRODUCTION Cells can divide and produce new cells that are identical to
themselves. Reproduce means making new living things.
TYPES OF CELLS Cells differ in shape and size.
Blood cells are round.
Muscle cells are elongated. Intestine cells are block –shaped.
Neurons are star- shaped.
PARTS OF A CELL
Cells have three parts: The membrane is the covering around the cell. The nucleus is the part which controls the cell. Cytoplasm is a jelly-like substance. Many of the
chemical reactions of the cell take place here.

LEVELS OF ORGANIZATION Cells in multicellular living things are organised in levels –
LEVELS OF ORGANIZATION.
Cells are specialised:
they have specific
functions.
Cells form tissues. Tissues are
groups of cells with the same
function.
Tissues form organs. Organs are groups of
various tissues which act together.
Organs form systems. Systems are made up of several organs
THE LOCOMOTOR SYSTEM
SKELETAL SYSTEM
MUSCULAR SYSTEM
LOCOMOTOR SYSTEM
THE SKELETAL SYSTEM
Humans need a skeleton to:
GIVE SHAPE
SUPPORT THEIR BODY
PROTECT THEIR ORGANS
The skeleton is made up for:
BONES: hard bone tissue.
CARTILAGE: flexible tissue,
protects the ends of the bones.
THE SKELETON
Joints: they are the unions between two or more bones.
Fixed joints: cannot move.
JOINTS
Semi- flexible joints: Flexible joints: only move a little. lot of movement
LIGAMENTSLigaments: connect bones at a joint.
They are strong and elastic tissue.

THE MUSCULAR SYSTEM
The muscular system consists of all the muscles in the
body.
When a muscle is relaxed it is long and thin.
When a muscle is contracted it is shorter and thicker.
Tendons are tissues that connect muscles to bones.
