Transformation through Collaboration PoliceThis May, the Howe ISDClass of 2016 will graduate asthe first class ever to benefitfrom 1:1 computing devicesfrom elementary throughmiddle and high schools. Itwas nine years ago whenHowe ISD envisioned a newtype of learning environmentfor its students. At the centerof this partnership were 82fourth grade students whowould graduate in the Class of2016.

Terisa O’Dowd, TechnologyDirector at Howe ISDcommented, “In the beginning,we started a pilot program byproviding every fourth gradestudent and teacher with awireless computing device. We then installed mountedprojectors and documentcameras in all fourth-gradeclassrooms and strengthenedour wireless network tosupport the initiative.Additionally, the teachersagreed to attend curriculumand technology integrationtraining throughout the year.”

As the Class of 2016progressed through the HoweISD schools, so did technologyand staff development. Everyyear, teachers made acommitment to attend trainingand, in return, their grade levelwas equipped with 21stcentury learning tools. Twokey concepts emerged:technology access and student

-centered collaborativeclassrooms. The shift thatour leaders had envisionedbegan to take shape.Teachers began redefiningthe way they engagedstudents within theircurriculum. Project-basedtools helped teachersincorporate digital literacy, critical thinking andproblem-solving fosteringcollaboration in theclassroom. Electronictextbooks provided studentswith updated and interactivecontent. Students beganaccessing assignments andgrades through onlinelearning managementsystems. Students andteachers embracedcooperative to share ideas.

Nine years ago, the Class of2016 began a journey andbecame the model for allstudents within Howe ISD."Today, the vision thatstarted as a collaborationbetween teachers, students, parents and the communityhas allowed Howe ISD totransform our classroomsinto collaborative learningenvironments," saysO’Dowd.

“For God so loved the world, that Hegave His only beloved Son, thatwhoever believes in Him will notdie, but have everlasting life,” John3:16.

The realization of how much you areloved by God will change your lifeand how you see yourself andothers. The Bible tells you that Godloves you but it has to be in yourheart not just your head. You need arevelation that can’t be shaken orremoved. This can only be given bythe Holy Spirt. But first you have tobe a believer in Jesus Christ as theSon of God. You have to believeJesus was conceived by a virgin, born in the flesh and lived as asinless man. He was fully God andfully man. Jesus felt the temptationsof His flesh just as you and I do yetHe resisted and remained sinless. Asa perfect and flawless first born Hewas sacrificed for the sins of thewhole world. He was buried andresurrected to life and now sits at theright hand of God. The Holy Spirit ofGod was sent to us as our Helper andHe is fully God. Unlike Jesus, Hedoes not have a body and He can beall places at all times. When youbecome a believer in Jesus Christand called a Christian you want tosubmit to His authority as Lord overyour life. You are not born aChristian. It’s a choice unlike otherreligions. Another big difference inbeing a Christian than otherreligions, is that our God is alive andHe loves you.

The reality of how much God lovesyou happens as you read the Bibleand focus on His Word . God is agood Father and He continuallytells His children how much Heloves them. It’s easy to focus onhow much God loves the wholeworld but it’s a little more difficultto believe that if you had been theonly person on the earth, Godwould have still sent Jesus to diefor you and you alone. I was aChristian for years before I reallybelieved the debts of His love forme. When I had my first child, abeautiful son that I named Joshua,my heart melted. I started relatingto God as a parent, a perfectFather. I could not imagine beingable to love another human withthe same sacrificial love that Iloved Josh…then I had thisbeautiful baby girl, Maranda. Myheart felt so satisfied. I loved herwithout losing any for Josh. Buthow could God love the wholeworld like that? I had my thirdsweet little baby girl, Summer. Myheart was bursting with love forher and contented that I had maxedout…and then I had my youngestson, Derek, 12 months later. Hewas to be my baby forever andever and I love him so much. I alsohave a daughter, Michelle, whojust so happens to have a differentmother. I love her so very muchand have adopted her into my heartas if she has always been there. Myfive children are all different. They each have a differentpersonality, have different tastes, and a different calling withstrengths and weaknesses. Irecognize their differences andlove them for those difference. They each make this momma’sheart beat all the same. Myimperfect, selfish human heart hasso much love for my babies. Ifinally got it! God loves me! Godloves you! He is perfect, selflessand God the Father has so muchlove for us. We are His kids, Hisbabies, His children. God wantsyou to trust Him and to reach outto Him when you have a need.

He wants to have a personalrelationship with you. He wants tospend time with you. When I sayto my children that I lovethem…they know I love them asindividuals, also. I love doingthings with them together as afamily and individually, just themand their momma. I would tellthem that they were my favorite, Ithink they believed it when they

www.evercleanhbsolutions.com

were young. Now it’s a joke as towho is momma’s favorite. Godsays that to me and you. “You arethe apple of God’s eye” We arespecial to Him. It’s our nature tohave a craving and a desire in ourheart to be loved. God createdthat in us. You are good enoughto deserve the love of yourcreator. He loves the wholeworld and He loves you as anindividual. He already knowsyou’ve messed up. He knows theshame you have carried or arecarrying. He knows if youhaven’t or don’t love yourselfright now. You are unique andHe loves you for that.

No matter how much He lovesyou, if you are not conscious andaware of it, it is not going tomake you feel loved. Love is arelationship. You need toexpress love and feel love. Godwants to show you His love andHe tells us how to love Him. Justbecause you were savedyesterday or years ago does notmean you are enjoying a lovingfellowship with God. He doesn’twant to be just acquaintances. There are many who believethere is a God but they are nobetter off than those who denyHe is God. As much as I love myhusband, my children and mygrandchildren; I think of the Lordas soon as my eyes open and as Iclose them at night. My heart hasmore room to love others whenGod is first not last. He loves meright where I am and He lovesyou right where you are. If youthink badly about yourself, youwill not be able to believe thatGod loves you. He knows yourwrong doings and your sins, andHe wants you to correct thembecause He loves you. He doesn’tcondemn but “The Lord correctsthose He loves, just as a fathercorrects a child in whom hefavors,” Proverbs 3:12. Godcorrects us through His HolySpirit and we learn it in the Bible.God never holds back His love.

“For as a man thinks in his heart,he is,” Proverbs 23:7. Thinkabout how much God loves youand allow it to be real in yourheart. It will be life changing.

We are now officially in the seasonwhere massive amounts of peoplefrom other local towns are constantlyin and out of Howe. Youth baseballand softball sees more importedtraffic from other towns than anyother thing. Those in the knowexpect Howe to grow by a couplehundred homes in the next two yearswhich means a lot of young coupleswill be looking at our city in adifferent way on their way to littleHunter's baseball game at FergusonField or Hash Field.

In order to attract those youngfamilies to consider Howe's newhomes instead of new homes in VanAlstyne or Anna, we must improveour park situations. Those of us thathave young ballplayers, we travel toother cities and see the amenities thatare greater than ours when it comesto parks. Whitewright, Van Alstyne,Anna, Melissa and even Bells andS&S have superior fields andcomplexes. With that said, we havewonderful parents that help take careof and in some cases improve ourfields (such as John Grant and hisfellow 8U coaches and parents).

I've always been told to be the best atwhatever it is that we are. In a citylike ours - a bedroom community,we need to make sure that we are thebest bedroom community we canbe...until that changes.

In order to attract the young familiesand retain young families to ruralareas, we must be in the game for notonly great parks that include walkingtrails, biking trails and such, but alsosuperior Internet access, a shop localprogram, community activities, civicclubs, a great local newspaper(well..can't have 'em all), and greatschools.

Howe hangs it hat on the ISD as italone will attract some of thoseyoung families. But we ALL have todo our part also. Lets keep Howebeautiful and be welcoming to thosenew folks who will eventually makeour water bills lower.

Howe should focus tobe best at what itis...a bedroom city

Vintage tablecloths can be foundwith every imaginable motif—frombrilliant fruit and floral clusters tocowboys to souvenir state maps. Many collectors are finding thesewonderfully colorful tablecloths(and matching napkins if you arefortunate enough to find them) justright for their 1940s/50s kitchensor entertaining outdoors on thepatio. These are great items fornovice collectors; they are easy tofind, reasonably affordable, andcome in a wide variety of patternsand colors to match most kitchendecors.

The first cloths were produced inthe 1920s, but very few of thesewill be found—they wore out fromuse and were probably tossed out.The heyday for the cloths was the1940s (the charming designs andcolors helped uplift the spirits ofhousewives from the unhappinessof the war years) and the 1950swhen men and women alike wereready for cheerful injections ofcolor into their everyday lives. Thecloths were inexpensive and sold infive and dime stores, althoughsome of the better departmentstores sold them as well. Becausethey were economical manyfamilies owned four or fivedifferent patterns so they couldchange the look in their kitchensfrequently.

Small textile mills in the South,New England and Californiaproduced the cloths. If you arelucky you may find cloths in anunused condition with paper labelssuch as Broderie Creations,Springmaid, and Town andCountry. They were handprintedand made of 100-percent cotton, although some were made of rayonor linen. Their color-staying powerwas due to the fact that they werefinely woven and made with

colorfast printing and dyes. Thepermanence of the colors wasachieved by vat dyeing developedin the 1930s and perfected in the1940s. Vat dyes are insoluble inwater and very resistant tosunlight, washing and drycleaning;the fabrics in the cloths do notbleed or fade.

Style and motif are the best gaugefor determining age: linens fromthe 1920s had deco- and arts-and-crafts inspired motifs; fruits andflowers in naturalistic colorsembellished the 1930s cloths; the1940s patterns were moreelaborate a la Carmen Mirandawith bright borders and stripes andsouth-of-the-border and westerndesigns; more fruits and flowers, western and geometric andabstract designs were introducedin the 1950s. Kitchen implementsof every type (teapots, coffeepots, and appliances) took on the statusof household icons when printedon the cloths.

The most common motifs are thefruit and floral pattern, butsouthwestern and state maps, although harder to find, are highlysought after. When people startedtaking car trips for vacations, statemaps became popular. The mostcommon states are the onestraveled to by tourists, like Texas,Florida, California, Alaska, andNew York. Texas cloths are oftenexaggerations of the size of thestate with quips and jokesfeaturing Texas brag about theanimals, wealth, and historic sites. They often matched the samebraggadocio as were printed on the“tacky” souvenir plates that wereproduced in the U.S. and in Japan.

My mother ALWAYS had atablecloth on her table and mysisters and I have followed her in

that tradition. The HoweMercantile has a nice selection ofvintage cotton tablecloths justwaiting to be part of your springoutdoor dining. Many are pricedunder $20 so you can do as theladies of the 1940s and haveseveral to brighten up yourkitchen.

Texas History Minute:

Amon G. Carter was another of thelarger-than-life figures thatdominated Texas business in theearly twentieth century. His effortscemented Fort Worth’s attempts tobecome a major industrial andcultural center for the Southwest.Carter was born in 1879 near thesmall town of Crafton in WiseCounty. He quit school at the age of11 to help support the family.

In 1905, he settled in Fort Worthwhere he soon found work as theadvertising manager of the new FortWorth Star newspaper. However, the newspaper quickly faltered. Tosave the paper, Carter in 1908 led aneffort to raise money to buy thecompeting Fort Worth Telegram. On New Years Day 1909, hecombined the two papers into theFort Worth Star-Telegram, anextremely successful and profitablepublication that became one of thedominant papers of West Texas.

He quickly developed a reputation asa civic promoter and eventuallymade Fort Worth’s slogan “Wherethe West Begins” popular. In 1911,he arranged for the first airplaneflight in city history, which began along relationship between Carter andaviation. By the late 1920s, he waspart owner of what becameAmerican Airlines and convincedother shareholders to move itsheadquarters to Fort Worth. In thelate 1930s, he convinced whatbecame General Dynamics to open aplant in the city and later attractedBell Aviation to the area. In 1922, heopened the city’s first radio station,WBAP, which for many years shareda frequency with Dallas stationWFAA. He also convinced the stateto open Texas Tech University inLubbock in 1923.

In the meantime, he bought land andinvested heavily in oil exploration.Though Carter never held an elected

office, he effectively served as anambassador for Fort Worth’sbusiness and cultural interests, becoming one of the mostpowerful figures in the city.

From the 1930s through the 1950s,he nurtured a strong rivalry withDallas. One story relayed for yearswas that he had such a dislike forDallas that he would always bringa sack lunch to any meetings hehad in Dallas rather than spendmoney in the city. Part of this wasseen with the fight with Dallasover airports. Carter had supportedthe creation of Greater SouthwestInternational Airport in the early1950s, not far from the modernDallas-Fort Worth InternationalAirport while Dallas continued tosupport its own Love Field.

In 1945, he established the AmonG. Carter Foundation to fundcultural and education projectsacross the state. The foundationhas helped fund museums, symphonies, and art projects fordecades. It has also establishedscholarships and providedfinancing for medical research.

After World War II, he expandedhis media holdings into television. In 1948, WBAP became the firsttelevision station in the South (itscall letters changed to KXAS in the1970s). But after the war, Carterslowed down. His health declinedand suffered the first of severalheart attacks in 1953. He died atthe age of 76 in 1955.

His tireless work for Texas washonored in many ways after hispassing. Amon G. Carter Lake inMontague County, constructed in1956, was named in his memory. In 1961, his daughter, RuthStevenson, opened the AmonCarter Museum of American Art inFort Worth, one of the mostrespected art museums in the state. At Carter’s request, much of hiswestern art collection wasincluded. Amon Carter RiversideHigh School in Fort Worth is alsonamed in his honor. Buildings atTexas Tech, Texas A&MUniversity, and Texas ChristianUniversity are also named afterhim.Dr. Bridges is a Texas native, writer, and history professor. Hecan be reached [email protected].

Recycling is a great way to helpthe environment – and reusingthings is great, too. When yousend bottles, paper, and plasticaway to the recycling plant, ittakes energy to turn them intonew products. When you reusesomething, you’re keeping it outof the trash system altogether.

Collect 20 leftover plastic bags andtake them back to a store thatrecycles them. Recycled plasticbags can be used to make plasticlumber for decks or swing sets andpolar fleece for vests and coats.

Set up a place at school whereother kids can bring in plasticbags. With a parent, take what youcollect for a month to a store forrecycling.

Donate toys and clothes to Peggy'sPorch. With your family, gothrough your toys and clothes andset aside what you don’t play withor wear anymore. (Make sureanything in this pile is in goodenough shape that someone elsecould use it.) Bag up your thingsand drop off them.

Each Monday, city workers arriveto the same type of scenario on thegrounds of the recyclingcontainers. Due to a few citizenswho have ruined the recyclingexperience for the town by tossingin their trash instead ofrecyclables, the city has had tomanipulate the hours of thecontainers in order to prevent suchmisuse. However, due to theclosed hours, some feel the need tojust leave their trash or recyclingon the grounds for someone else topick up.

Also, the reconstruction of theformer First Christian Churchrequires a container outside of thebuilding. However, it seems thatsome citizens are confused andthink that it is a public trashcontainer. The volunteerorganization that raised $25,000for the renovation effort iscurrently paying for the trashcontainer, therefore, those placingtheir trash in this container arestealing from the great communityinvolvement program that tookplace in October.

There is an easy fix to all of yourtrash issues - call the city and findout what you can do. City Hall's

phone number is 903-532-5571.Those caught dumping illegallycould face hefty fines.

We can do better than this. Whenyou think of your city as you doyour home, these things will ceaseto happen. If any of this disturbsyou and you would like to becomea member of Keep HoweBeautiful, please contact DonnaWormsbaker [email protected] as sheis the Executive Director of theprogram. Membership dues are$10 per year for individuals andthey have clean-up days and flowerplanting days. They are NOT,however, responsible for pickingup your trash.

Please take pride in yourcommunity and take the time tomake Howe the best place to live.

In addition, if you find someonelittering or misusing the trashservices, please don't hesitate tosend photos [email protected]. It hasbeen suggested that the HoweEnterprise start a "public shaming"column in order to alleviate theseissues.

Howe's Rumor MillThe bigger the tale, the more people willbelieve it. That is typical life in smalltown America. Howe is no different thanHico or Hondo when it comes to therumor mill. Some of the rumors aroundtown include one that the old Dairy Queenbuilding had a deal with a restaurant, butit fell through and now the building willjust sit empty. In fact, the truth is thatthere will be a restaurant in the buildingand it will be front page news in thecoming weeks.

Also, word in the coffee shop is that all ofthe clearing of land by Howe High Schoolis making way for a new housingdevelopment. This also is not true. TheHowe Enterprise was told by two sourcesassociated with the clearing that theproperty is just being cleared and thatthere is no intentions to sell the land.

One of the biggest rumors now was set bythis very own establishment. Theelaborate April Fools joke on Facebookhas the Howe Enterprise purchasing theradio tower in Howe and starting a newFM station called K-HOW. Plenty ofpeople took the bait. Don't feel bad.

Rumor has it that Howe is looking in toputting a bridge across US Highway 75from L.B. Kirby Avenue to HallCemetery Road. This one is true as thedrawings have already been approved byTxDOT several years ago. They wereresubmitted last fall. If the projects isselected, it likely would start no soonerthan 2018. One day it will happen. Andalso something that is inevitable is thecity once again having its own sewersystem.
