Indians Come Out On Top InNon-Conference Action Against Pettisville
By: Mitchell Peebles
THE VILLAGE REPORTER
Pettisville 2/15/14The Pettisville
Blackbirds and Wauseon Indians went
to battle in their annual matchup. The
schools are separated by a mere ve
miles, which has only added to the ri-
valry between the two schools through-
out the years. This years renewal of that
rivalry was won by the Indians, as the
Tribe rolled to a 55-27 victory over the
Blackbirds.
Both squads were evenly matchedthrough for the rst half of the opening
quarter, as at the 5:30 mark of the rst
quarter, Pettisville and Wauseon were
tied at four points a piece. The Indians
soon created a bit of separation, scoring
seven straight points to go on top 13-
6. It looked as if the Indians were going
to stop Pettisville from scoring for the
remainder of the rst period, that was
until Pettisville senior Austin Dykstra
nailed a 15 footer with only ve seconds
remaining in the opening quarter to
end the Blackbird scoring drought, and
make the score 13-8 in favor of the Tribe
at the end of the rst stanza.
The spark at the end of the rst quar-
ter gave Pettisville some momentum as
the second period of play began. At the
6:26 mark of the second quarter, Black-
bird junior Tate Kauffman drained a
three point shot to bring Pettisville with-
in two of the Tribe, 15-13. However, that
Blackbird momentum would not last for
very long, as in the nal six minutes of
the rst half, Noah Castle and Kris Boy-
sel would take over the contest, leading
the Indians on a 15-2 run to end the rst
half of the contest. Castle racked up 14
points to lead all scorers in the rst half.
The Wauseon run put the Tribe quickly
in control of the contest, leading 30-15
at the intermission.
The Blackbirds looked to get them-
selves back in to contention as the sec-
ond half opened up, but the vaunted
Indian defense came alive in the third
quarter, holding Pettisville to only four
points in the third period. Boysel con-
tinued his hot streak, and was assisted
by junior teammate Jacob Newlove who
hit a three late in the quarter, helping
the Indians grow their lead to 42-19 as
the third quarter buzzer sounded.
As the fourth quarter began, the Tribe
was rmly in control. Pettisvilles Jacob
Reyes was not going to go out without a
ght, as the senior made sure to score
his nal points on the court he called
home for four years. However it was not
enough to chip away at the Wauseon
lead, as the Tribe would go on to win by
a score of 55-27.
With the win, Wauseon moves to 15-5
on the season, and is 6-1 in NWOAL
play. Pettisville falls to 11-10 on the
year, and 7-2 in the BBC.
For the Blackbirds, Dykstra led the
way with ten points. Noah Miller and Eli
King both scored four, Tate Kauffman
put down three, Jeremy Mann, Jacob
Reyes, and Korben Rychener all nished
with two points.
Castle set the pace for Wauseon with14 points. Newlove contributed 11, Boy-
sel scored 10, Zach Johnson tallied up
six, Dillon Schantz and Zac Robinson
both put up four, and Caleb Andrews
and Corry Byers rounded out the night
with three points a piece.

Bulldogs Pile Onto TheNorth Central Eagles On HomecomingPIONEER: February 15, 2014 As
Homecoming King Clayton Ferguson led
his North Central Eagle teammates to
the locker room to lace 'em up prior to
the February 15 game against the Edg-
erton Bulldogs, no one could imagine
what was coming at the opening tip.
The theme for Homecoming Night,
'Fire and Ice', turned out to be more
a prophecy than a mere theme. North
Central came out brutally cold to sup-
ply the ice, and Edgerton couldn't miss,
bringing a torch to the Homecoming cel-
ebration with a 60-27 blowout.
The Bulldogs pitched an 18-0 shut-
out in the rst period, and by the time
the intermission rolled around, the Ea-
gles were down 32-4...their worst offen-
sive display in years.
The barrage continued into the third
when Ferguson led the Eagles back to
life, but the second half efforts were
more than countered by the Bulldogs
that were still attempting threes into the
fourth period.
Ferguson led the Eagles with 11
points, while Jordan Reeves and Dylan
Hutchison each had 5 points, and Brady
Zuver, Jordan Bailey and Josh Roesner
each had 2 points.

WAUSEON: February 14, 2014 A

but if your defense cannot get your op-

der the same category...moot.
The Wauseon Indians were certainly
in non-compliance with the Evergreen

early lead and built on it for four quar-
ters on February 14, nishing the nightand the Vikings with a 43-23 win.

By: Mitchell Peebles
THE VILLAGE REPORTER
SWANTON 2/14/14The 2013-
2014 season did not end the way the
Montpelier Locomotives wanted it to, as
they suffered a 84-40 trouncing at the
hands of NWOAL rival Swanton. The Bulldogs wasted little time tak-
ing complete control of the contest, as
they jumped out to an 18 point lead in
the rst quarter, outscoring the Locos
24-6 in the opening quarter.
Things did not get much better for
Montpelier in the second period, as they
again were outscored by a double digit
margin, this time on the short end of a
26-7 decit. At the break, the Bulldogs
of Swanton led the Montpelier Locomo-
tives by a convincing 50-13 margin.
While the third quarter was not as
lopsided as the rst two had been, Mont-
pelier was unable to keep the Bulldogs
from pulling away even more than they
already had. The Loco offense was able
to score ten points in the third quarter,
but gave up 19 on the defensive end,
making the score 69-23 at the end of
three quarters of action.
Montpelier was able to close the gap
in the fourth quarter, but it was too late
to start building any momentum. The
Locos won the fourth quarter 17-15, butmaking the nal tally 84-40 in favor of
the Swanton Bulldogs.

points in the contest. Surbey was able

Pettisville Defeats Stryker To Win OutrightThe 2013-14 BBC Championship
STRYKER: February 14, 2014 The
Pettisville Blackbirds sealed the deal on
another undisputed BBC championship
on February 14, wresting it from the
Fayette Eagles by means of a 38-35 de-
feat of the Stryker Panthers in The Cage.
The win did not come easy for the
Birds. Pettisville jumped out to an early
lead, and built on it for an eight pointadvantage at the half. They held that
lead until the fourth where the panthers
mounted a late rally, only to have the
clock cut them off three points short of
the mark.
Tate Kauffman led all scorers for
the BBC Champion Blackbirds with 12
points, with Austin Dykstra getting 7.
Josh Liechty and Jeremy Mann each
had 5 points, Noah Miller and Korben

Frigid First Half Shoots DownHilltop In BBC Play Against Fayette
WEST UNITY: February 14, 2014
The Hilltop Cadets have struggled all
season long with consistency, and with
Fayette in the house on February 14,
the old bugaboo returned to bite the
hometown boys.
Hilltop posted a second half advan-
tage of 25-16 over the Eagles, a difcult
task against their defense. That advan-
tage was not enough to atone for a pal-try ve-point output in the rst half that
allowed Fayette to come away with a 35-
301 win.
Koby Biddix continued his torrent
of treys, landing four for Fayette and
a game-high 12 points. Chandler San-

Fayette Tops Edon In Overtime After Sanford's
Half Court Prayer Is AnsweredEDON: February 10, 2014 Throwaway the won-lost records and admit it...
The Hangar in Edon is not an easy place
to get a road win. The Boys in Bomber
Blue came into their February 10 BBC
game against Fayette with a 7-9 record
overall, while Fayette was sporting anoth-
er ne season at 11-5. All signs pointed
to a likely Eagles' win, but like I said, The
Hangar is not a place where visitors have
an easy go of it. The 36-33 Fayette victory
was one for the ages.
The Eagles and Bombers went back
and forth until a 15-10 third put Fayette
up by seven going into the fourth. Kaden
Sapp canned 8 of his team-high 13 points
to lead an Edon rally in the fourth that
saw the Bombers pull even at the end of
regulation. Overtime was on the way.
In the extra period, both teams' defens-
es came to the fore, putting the clamps on
scoring. Finally, the Bombers worked a
strategy to move the ball around, kill the
clock, and go for a nal shot. The strat-
egy worked well, until they moved the ball
into the right corner where the Fayette
defense forced a turnover.
After a timeout and with the potential
of a second overtime looming large, the
ball was inbounded from Grant Schaffner
to Chandler Sanford, a senior with trackand cross country experience dating back
to his junior high days. Turning around
and coming back to the other side of the
court, he was picked up by Edon's Brock
Thiel who turned Sanford to the sideline.
With the clock down to two seconds, San-
ford, who had the pedal to the metal, ranthe tightrope between River Wicker and
the sideline, ring off a shot as he hit
midcourt just prior to the buzzer. The ball
grazed the back of the hoop...everything
else was all net as the three-point prayer
was answered. The explosion of the Fay-
ette faithful was equally mirrored by thestunned silence of Bomber Nation.
Sanford led all scorers with 15 points
for Fayette, with Koby Biddix landing 8.Jerad Seiler had 6 points, Tristen Bates,
Tyler Cox and Skylar Lantz each had 2

Indians Bounce Elmwood InNon-Conference Action
By: Mitchell Peebles
THE VILLAGE REPORTER
WAUSEON 2/8/14---The Wauseon In-
dians played host to non-conference foe
Elmwood. It was the Indians stout defense
that led the way to an easy victory as theTribe would down the Royals of Elmwood
by a nal score of 60-28.
It was a slow rst quarter for both
squads offenses. The Tribe would start
off with a three pointer by senior Zac Rob-
inson early on in the quarter, but would
be unable to jump out to a big lead in the
opening quarter, as at the end of the rst
quarter of action, the scoreboard read 9-5
in favor of Wauseon.
Elmwood gained some momentum
in the early part of the second period,
even taking a 12-11 lead over the Tribe.
Wauseon head coach Chad Burt called a
timeout, and was able to make the prop-
er adjustments to get his
team back in to the lead.
Wauseon junior Noah Cas-
tle was a vital part of thiscomeback, scoring six of
the Indians 11 points in
the second quarter. At half,
it was the Indians who held
a 20-15 lead over the visit-
ing Elmwood Royals.
The third quarter is
when all doubt would be
eliminated from the con-
test, as the Indians would
take complete control of the
contest. The Indian defense
held Elmwood to only ve
points in the third quar-
ter. Meanwhile, ve differ-
ent players would score
for Wauseon, putting 20
points on the board in the
third quarter alone. In fact,Wauseon scored as many
points in the third stanza
as Elmwood had in the rst
three quarters combined.
Going in to the fourth and
nal quarter of action, the Tribe held a 40-
20 lead.
Wauseon would not take their foot off
the gas in the nal quarter of the night,
scoring 20 more points in the nal quar-
ter. Kris Boysel scored eight points in thefourth, giving him a total of 14 points in
the second half alone. Elmwood could do
nothing to close the gap, and the Tribe
would go on to win the contest by a nal
score of 60-28.
Leading the way for the Indians was
Boysel with 16, Corry Byers contributed
11 on the night, Castle and Jacob Newlove
both scored nine, Zac Robinson put six
points on the board, Zach Johnson had
four, Alec Lillich and Carter Bzovi both
scored two, and Dillon Schantz rounded
out the scoring with one point.

Hannah Bleikamp Breaks The 1,000-PointBarrier And The Hilltop Lady Cadets HandThe Antwerp Lady Archers A Lopsided Loss
By Timothy Kays
THE VILLAGE REPORTER
WEST UNITY: February 11, 2014 -The Hilltop Lady Cadets know how tothrow a Senior Night bash. After theirFebruary 11 tilt, the Antwerp Lady Ar-chers can attest to the fact. Emily Arm-bruster led all scorers with 21 points,Hannah Bleikamp broke the 1,000-ca-reer point barrier, and Kayla Settlemire, out injured since the Swanton game, made it onto the hardwood of The Bun-ker one more time as the Lady Cadetsunloaded the frustrations of a three-game losing streak on the Lady Archersby a 66-30 score.
The road to Senior Night was, at best, rocky. A loss to Swanton after the LadyCadets failed to hold a late lead was fol-lowed by the same thing to BBC rivalPettisville...a loss that cost them a piece
of the conference title. An obviously de-moralized an banged up Hilltop squadwas then clobbered by Edgerton onFebruary 8, leading to the Senior Nightgame. The focus of the Lady Cadet faith-ful was on Bleikamp, a Sienna Heights-bound senior who came into the contestjust six points shy of 1,000 for her elitecareer. The focus of Bleikamp and herteammates though was decidedly differ-ent...get off the schneid, and get back toplaying winning, Hilltop hoops.
Both teams came out with tough de-fenses that kept each other off the score-boards in the early going. A full-courtpress by the Lady Cadets was equallyeffective as the 2-1-2 full court zonepress of Antwerp. Eventually though, the team with better ball movement and
control began to nd chinks in the ar-mor of their opponents, and that teamwas Hilltop. With Antwerp well awareof the potency of Bleikamp, they couldnot afford to double up on her seniorpartner, the equally dangerous EmilyArmbruster. It was Armbrusters paintplowing that gave the Lady Cadets anearly lead that they would never surren-der. On the other end of the oor, theLady Archers were nding senior KaileyCreamers point defense almost omni-present, and fellow senior LeAnn Joosta pain in the paint. Antwerp did not getonto the scoreboard until less than aminute remained in the rst, and theywent into the second trailing 11-4. TheLadies In Red would turn the game intoa blowout in the second.
Bleikamp had ample opportunities towrap up her 1,000th point earlier in therst period, but instead chose to pass offin favor of sure scoring opportunities...astrategy that proved successful on thescoreboard. As her point total slowlyrose, so did the anxiety of the crowd. When a three attempt from the upperleft side hit the back iron, the collectivegroan from the audience could be felt aseasily as it was heard. The patience ofthe Lady Cadets on the oor was win-ning the game, and as the clock tickeddown toward the three minute mark inthe half, the impatient audience nallygot to see the history made that they ea-gerly anticipated.
Still playing the tough pressure de-fense, Bleikamp got a hand on the ball
being dribbled by an Antwerp guard. Al-though more a ball-handling disruptionthan a steal at the beginning, the actioncaused the Lady Archer to lose controlof the ball for a split second...and thatwas all Bleikamp needed. With the LadyArchers already falling back, Bleikampcleared the ball to herself and took offon the right side. With one defender infront of her, two to her right and theall-too-recently pilfered Antwerp guard
nipping at her heels, Bleikamp cut intothe right side of the lane and let go a
running jumper from six feet away. Theball went in, and at the 3:06 mark in thesecond quarter...8:17 pm for those whomissed the game, Hannah Bleikamp be-came the third Lady Cadet to break the1,000 career point barrier. The deucefrom the paint was point number 1,001.
The game was stopped temporarily aspublic address announcer Tom Schaperannounced the event to what had be-come a loud and sustained standingovation. Hannah received the congratu-latory hugs from her teammates, andthen from her parents, Phil and Bob-bie Bleikamp who came onto the oor.Hilltop Head Coach Aaron Schmidt pre-sented Hannah with the game ball, afterwhich many of the hometown faithfulput down the signs of support that they
were holding up to that point, pulled outcameras, and began snapping photos ofthe historical moment. The Lady Cadetswent on to expand their lead to 21 goinginto the intermission at 38-17.
Unfortunately for the Lady Archers, the timeout taken to honor HannahBleikamp was just a brief respite. Thesecond half remained to be played, andthe Lady Cadets, still riding the high of ahistory-making moment and a 21-pointlead, were not about to have a replay ofthe Swanton and Pettisville games...uh-uh.
The hometown girls hit the hard-wood in the second half with the samedirection that they had coming into thegame, and the intensity to back it up.This time around, there would be no laterally. The Lady Cadets went on 17-7 runin the third to open the advantage to31 at 55-24. In the fourth period, therewere only two things remaining to ac-complish. Make sure that there was notgoing to be any late-game suspense...check. The Lady Cadets continued toadd to their lead to ensure that point.
All that remained was to make surethat Senior Night was truly, SeniorNight. With under four minutes left inthe game, Coach Schmidt took care ofthat detail when he called Settlemire offthe bench to check in. Unable to playbut still able to suit up, the addition ofSettlemire to the lineup allowed her tojoin her fellow seniors Joost, Creamer,Bleikamp and Armbruster on The Bun-ker hardwood one nal time before theirhometown faithful. All ve then checked
out, bringing an end to their home reg-ular season careers. The lead and thegame well in hand, the Hilltop Lady Ca-det Class of 2014 went out in style witha 36-point win.
Armbruster nished with 6 boards,4 steals and a game-high 21 points forthe 13-7 / 6-3 Lady Cadets, and Blei-kamp went for 18 points, 5 reboundsand 3 swipes. Cierra Grant knockeddown 9 points, Creamer had 7 points, and Bailey Funkhouser rained down atrey. Joost nished with 2 points, Des-tiny Denton had a deuce and a dozendimes, and Allie Schmitt and KarissaCrisenbery came off the bench to eachadd another 2 points.
A big-time celebration in small-townAmerica...this Senior Night Bash in The
Bunker only took a couple of hours tocomplete, but the memories generatedon this night are guaranteed good for alifetime.

Stryker Lady Panthers' Sticky DefenseShuts Down North Central In BBC Play
PIONEER: February 10, 2014 The
Stryker Lady Panthers are renowned for
a turnover creating defense. Their BBC
rivals, the North Central Lady Eagles,

The Lady Panthers forced 25 turn-
overs with their pressure defense, con-
verting them into scoring opportunities
that saw Stryker run away with a 62-30
score over North Central.
The senior core of Stryker did the
most damage, with Conner Varner, Con-
nor Sullivan and Christie Huston post-
ing 25, 15 and 15 points respectively.
