    THE VILLAGE REPORTER

MONTPELIER- In what was the last

NWOAL meeting between Montpelier andLiberty Center and possibly the nal meet-

ing ever, the host Locomotives made it a

night to remember as they were able toseize opportunity when it came knock-

ing. The Locos took advantage of two Lib-erty Center fumbles turning them into two

touchdowns. The scores were an integralcomponent in Montpeliers 40-32 victory

over the Tigers, their rst since the 2006

season. The Locos won the toss and elected to

go on the offensive rst. They began thenight with the ball on their 33 yard line.

The decision paid early dividends as thetrio of quarterback Dylan Snyder, and run-

ning backs Dallas Royer and Jordan Bird-

sall each took their turns running the ball. The Big Three used up 5:19 to cover the

67 yards. Royer put the rst 6 points on

the board as he rambled through the teethof the Tiger defense for a 3 yard touch-down. After Cody Caudills kick sailed wide

left, the Locos were up 6-0.

Liberty Center wasted little time re-sponding. The Tigers covered 53 yards in

just 20 seconds as Dylan Sexton carriedthe ball twice in that span for the TD. The

2 point PAT run by Sexton was thwartedleaving the score knotted at six with 6:17

    left in the rst quarter.

The two defenses tightened the screwsas neither team was able to make much

headway offensively the rest of the periodand the score remained tied heading into

the 2nd quarter. The start of the second stanza was a

different story as the Tigers marched 84

yards in just under two minutes, mainlybehind the running of Sexton. Quarter-

back Brooks Hinton capped the drive witha 1 yard sneak. The extra point pass from

Hinton to Tejkl put Liberty up 14-6 with10:07 left before halftime.

Following a futile onside kick attempt

by the Tigers, Montpelier took over at theLiberty 44 yard line. Snyder and Birdsall

took turns toting the pigskin. This timeBirdsall crossed the goal line from 2 yards

out to move Montpelier closer cutting the

gap to 14-12. However, Snyders two pointrun was stopped short leaving the Locos

trailing by two with 7:27 left in the quarter.Once again the Tigers responded this

time chewing up 75 yards in 13 plays, allon the ground. Sexton was the benefactor

for a second time, on this occasion from

5 yards away. His two-point run attempt

however was a different story as Hunter

McKelvey and Alex Zuver slammed the ju-nior tailback to the turf short of the goal

line leaving the Tigers on top 20-12.Following a nifty 42 yard Caudill kick

return, and with just 1:38 remaining be-fore intermission, the Locos took posses-

sion at the Tigers 36 yard marker. That

time was more than enough for Snyder. The quarterback put the team on his back.

After a pass attempt to Caudill sailed high,Snyder ran the ball for one yard, and then

added 12 more yards. With the ball nowresting at the Liberty 23, the quarterback

nished the drive by scampering the re-

maining yardage to move the home teamwithin striking distance once again trailing

just 20-18. After a delay penalty, Snyderconnected with Caudill, but the senior was

tossed to the turf short of the end zone onthe PAT try.

With just 1:02 left on the clock, the Lo-

cos kickoff by Caudill sailed out of bounds.

However, in an apparent attempt to getbetter eld possession Liberty Center de-cided to have the ball re-kicked. However,

that decision failed miserably when Caudillpopped the kick over the heads of the front

line of the return team. Tejkl ran up on the

ball, but promptly dropped the leather onthe turf only to cover it himself at the Ti-

gers 28 yard line. Deep in their territory itappeared Liberty Center was satised with

a two point lead going into the locker roomas Sexton got the call for the 17th time of

the half. This time the tailback laid the ball

on the eld early in the rushing attempt. After a mad scramble the ofcial signaled

the ball belonged to the home team at theLC 31 yard marker with 50 ticks left on the

    scoreboard.

Snyder red high in the direction of

Caudill on rst down. The next snap Sny-der briey fumbled the ball, only to recoverit and scamper 12 yards. With another

rst down on the Liberty Center 19 yardline, Snyder sent a pass in the direction

of Keaton Byers. The receiver appeared to

be hit early, but no yellow hanky found itsway out of a pocket. Snyder called his own

number on second down, but lost one yard. After a timeout, Snyder connected with

Alex Zuver for 12 yards. With still 8 yardsto go, and just 17 seconds left, Royer got

the call and made his way to pay dirt with

a mere 8 seconds left in the half. Caudillskick was true this time and both teams

headed to the locker room with Montpelieron top 25-20.

The momentum gained at the end of

the rst half carried over to begin the third

quarter for the Locos. Liberty Center began

the second half with the ball on their 41yard line. After three short runs, the Tigers

punted the ball back to Montpelier.Following the downed punt, with the

ball on their 13 yard line, Royer gained 5yards on rst down. However, the tide took

a quick turn in the other direction when

Snyder had the ball ripped from his handsafter gaining another 5 yards.

The opportunistic Tigers covered theball at the Montpelier 26 yard line. In just

two plays Liberty Center added six points. The PAT run was no good, but in just a

little over 3 minutes into the third quarter

the Tigers were back on top by one 26-25.After McCord covered an onside kick

at the Montpelier 44 yard line, the Locooffense rolled back onto the eld look-

ing to answer the LC score. A rst downpass from Snyder intended for Byers fell

    incomplete. However, Snyder gained nine,

and then Birdsall moved the pile for six

hard yards and a rst down at the Liberty40 yard line. Zuver was the recipient ofa strike from Snyder, this time good for

a gain of 22 yards. Birdsall added sevenmore moving the ball to the LC 11. Sny-

der connected with Caudill, this time good

for six yards. With rst and goal to go atthe Tigers ve yard line, Snyder called his

number and picked up two more. Birdsallgot the next carry and burst into the end

zone for his second touchdown of the nightputting Montpelier back in the drivers seat

31-26. Snyder added two more to the total

when he ran through the heart of the LCdefense for the PAT. With 6:15 to go in the

third period, the Locos pushed the lead to33-26.

Not to be outdone, starting on their 41

yard line, the Tigers took back to the offen-

sive. Liberty Center covered the 59 yardsin 15 plays and just less than six minutes. The drive was capped off by a 2 yard run

by Jordan Smith. The Loco defense heldtough on the PAT attempt to maintain a

33-32 lead with 18 seconds left in the third

stanza. The fourth quarter began with both de-

fenses stiffening up. Both offenses wentthree and out to move the clock down to

9:40 left in the game. Thats when theMontpelier offense took over once again,

this time at the Tigers 40 yard line. The

backeld trio of Royer, Snyder, and Bird-sall each took turns toting the pigskin to

move the ball to the LC 8 yard line. Afterthe ve runs, and a Loco time out, Snyder

went to the air this time. What he found

was a wide open McCord who pulled down

a one-handed grab for six more points.

Caudill split the uprights for the secondtime on the night to push the Loco advan-

tage to 40-32 with 7:02 left in the contest. Not wanting to make the already long

bus ride home any longer by losing, the Lib-erty Center offense came out inspired with

the ball on their 28 yard line. Six straight

runs by Zack Carpenter moved the chainstwice, and the ball down to the Montpe-

lier 43 yard line. Facing fourth and seven,Hinton red a low strike in the direction of

Tejkl. Just as it appeared the drive wouldcontinue, the ball squirted out of Tejkls

hands to the ground seemingly ending the

hopes of the Tigers for a comeback.Montpelier took over at their 43 yard

line with 3:25 left in the game and was ableto grind all but ve seconds off the clock on

their nal drive. As was the case all night, the Big Three ground out a rst down

and much of the clock. Snyder sealed the

fate of the Tigers when his punt rolled dead

at the visitors 10 yard line, along with theLiberty Center hopes of a win.

Liberty Center had time for one more

play. After a pass from Tejkl to Hinton, then about six other laterals, the clock reg-

istered zero, and the Locos hung on for a

hard fought 40-32 victory.Montpelier Quarterback Dylan Snyder

did a masterful job running the Loco of-fense. He was the leading rusher with 107

yards on 15 carries. The total included the23 yard touchdown scamper. Through the

air the junior signal caller connected on 8

of 18 attempts for 103 yards and anothertouchdown. Birdsall rushed 12 times for

90 yards, adding two touchdowns, whileRoyer also added a pair of scores while

gaining 38 yards on 15 tries.

Alex Zuver was the leading receiver for

the Locos hauling in 3 tosses for 61 yards, with Caudill also snaring three aerials for17 yards. Nate McCord grabbed two pass-

es for 25 yards, including the one-hand-ed fourth quarter grab good for a 9 yard

touchdown; the score that put the game

away for the home team. The Locomotives, who improve to 2-1

on the season, look to move to 2-0 in theNWOAL when they make the long bus ride

to Hamler to take on a hungry band of Pa-triots from Patrick Henry on September

    19. The task at hand is a difcult one how-

ever as the Locos have not tasted victoryover the Pats since the mid 1990s. Kickoff

    is scheduled for 7:00 pm.

    THE VILLAGE REPORTER

(September 12th, 2014)-WEST UNITY:Hosting the Tigers from Holgate on Friday

night, Hilltop struggled from the onset ofthe game.

Losing 33-15, the Cadets had a hard

time dealing with Holgate quarterback Ga-

briel Santos, who completed 5 of 8 passesfor 70 yards. It was Santos feet that didthe real damage to the Cadet defense, how-

ever, gaining 157 yards and a touchdownon 9 rushing attempts.

One of those attempts was a 40 yard

touchdown run two minutes into the game.Holgate kicker Tommy Kovar missed the

extra point, and the score was 6-0, Hol-gate.

Hilltop put together a solid drive ontheir rst possession, with sophomore

quarterback Quinn Smith leading the of-

fense down the eld. The Cadets stalled in

eld goal range, though, and kicker JustinAshenfelter came onto the eld for the at-

tempt. Unfortunately for Hilltop, the kick

was blocked, and run back for a touch-down by the Tigers. A two point conversa-

tion attempt failed, making the score 12-0.Within the nal two minutes of the

half, Holgate added two scores to their

total, both of which were set up by San-tos. A long run by the Tigers quarterback

paved the way for Brock Theisen into theend zone from 4 yards out. Getting the

ball back, Santos completed a pass downthe eld for over 30 yards, giving Theisen

a demoralizing two yard touchdown runwith sixteen seconds left in the half. Kovar

made both extra points. Holgate led 26-0

at the half.Momentum began to shift in the third

quarter. The Cadets moved the ball moreeffectively, though they couldnt turn their

rst drive into points. On Holgates open-ing possession of the half, however, San-

tos went down with an injury, and backupDylan Szabo entered the game. Not nearly

as mobile as Santos, the Cadet defense

was able to get pressure on the new quar-terback, which allowed Hilltop to get the

ball back without giving up a score.Smith took advantage of the shifting

momentum, leading the Cadets on their

rst touchdown drive of the game. Thedrive was culminated with a 15 yard pass

to Zach VanDyke for the score. Ashenfel-ter made the point after attempt, and Hill-

top was on the board, losing 26-7.The Tigers responded just over a min-

ute later. Theisen rushed for his thirdtouchdown of the night, this time for 59

yards. Kovars kick went through the up-

rights, and Holgate led 33-7.Neither side could get much going after

that. A series of injuries to players on bothteams slowed the ow of the game, which

could be attributed to the lack of offense.David Smith did rush for a Cadet touch-

down with four seconds to go in the game,

giving it a nal score of 33-15, Holgate.Despite running a full 23 plays more

than the visiting Tigers, the Cadets werestill signicantly out gained in total yard-

age, 399 yards against 216. A lack of

balance in the Hilltop offense is the mainreason behind this, as 144 of those 216

yards were generated by the arm of Smith,

who went 16-42 passing with a touchdownand 3 interceptions. Compared to the 72

rushing yards the Cadets had, even with29 attempts, and their running game just

wasnt there for them against the Tigers.

The leading rusher for the Cadets wasDavid Smith with 39 yards on 16 rushes.

Smith himself had 29 yards on 11 at-tempts. Mikel Burlew led Hilltop in re-

ceiving yards, netting 55 on 4 receptions.VanDyke managed 29 yards on 2 catches,

and Quinton Miller brought in 3 ball for25 yards.

Szabo, who went 4-10 passing for 103

yards, spent most of his time trying toavoid Hilltop defenders. The Cadets got

to him 4 times as VanDyke, Jalen Towers,Caiden Miller, and Kohl Collins all took

a turn bringing down the Tigers quarter-back.

The Cadets travel to Calvert for their

next game, which will be played on Satur-day, September 20.

Bombers Drop Hamilton In Straight Sets(August 26th, 2014): It wasn't easy, but

Edon defeated Hamilton in straight sets.

The Marines from Indiana fought hard, but

just couldn't overcome the Bombers. The rst set saw the Bombers set the

pace of the game, winning 25-15. Game 2was tougher on Edon. Still they managed

to take the set 25-22. Hamilton gave it ev-erything they had in game three, but the

Lady Bombers were able to close out theMarines 25-23.

Alex Kiess did a little bit of everything

against the Lady Marines, making 13 as-sists, 4 kills, and 4 aces. Nicole Newell

nailed 13 kills for Edon. Teammate KaelaGearhart set things up for the Bomber at-

tack, serving up 15 assists to go along withher 2 aces and 1 kill.

    Edon Splits Tri-Match In Swanton(August 30th, 2014)-SWANTON: The

girls of Edon made the trip to Swantonin order to take part in a tri-match with

home team Swanton and fellow traveler

Hicksville. It proved to be too much forthe Bombers to take on both the Bulldogs

and the Aces, but they were at least able tocome away with one win on the day.

The rst opponent for Edon was Swan-ton. The Lady Bombers got off to a slow

start, dropping the rst game 13-25. They

came back strong in the second set, tak-

ing the game 25-21. Game 3 came down tothe wire, with both teams evenly matched.

Edon was able to earn the victory, howev-

er, winning the third set 26-24.Hicksville was next in line to take on

the Edon girls. Again, Edon struggled inthe rst set, losing the game 11-25. They

were unable to repeat their run from therst match, though, as they lost game 2

    17-25.

Edon Drops Match To Antwerp(August 28th, 2014)-ANTWERP: They

lasted four hard fought sets, but Edon

couldn't manage a win at Antwerp.

Game 1 set the tone for the evening, asthe Bombers pushed the Lady Archers to

their limit. The girls from Edon droppedthe set, however, losing 22-25. The Lady

Bombers didn't relent going into the sec-ond set, and it paid off with a victory. Edon

took the game 25-21. Antwerp controlled

game 3, as the Bombers fell 13-25. At-

tempting to force a decisive game 5, theLady Bombers put everything they had

into the fourth set. It wasn't quite enough,
