Ihis small volume an att mpt has been made to gathertogether the best and mos reliable of the sets of EthicalVerses attributed to the pyt agoreans.Both Hall's translation from t e Greek (1657), and Rowe'stranslation from the French of ndre Dacier (1707), have beenused in reproducing the Gold n Verses of Pythagoras, butDacier's version has been aim st exclusively followed, beingclearer and more intelligible.The Golden Sentences of D mocrates, the Similitudes ofDemophilus, and Pythagorean Symbols are from Bridgman'stranslation, and are to be faun in his little book, Translationsfrom the Greek, published in 18 4.The Pythagorean Sentencesof Demophilus, translated by avlor. are contained in thatvolume also.The remaining sets of verses, translated by Taylor, are ap-pended by him to his lamblichu I life of Pythagoras, publishedin 1818.

Sorely is needed in uch a lifethe strong, pure teaching of the elder days, when lea ning washeld to be richer than wealth, and simplicity fi er thanlavishness. The Greece of Pythagoras, with its mathe atics andmusic--order and harmony--has a message for th modernnations, disorderly and discordant, and this message may bestcome through those who, their own natures at uned bybrooding over the Pythagorean wisdom, can teach by life morethan by word lithe Beauty which was Greece."This book, into which are gathered the extant Py hagoreanteachings for those who would become disciples, cant ins muchmore than did Bridgman's Translations from th Greek,published in 1804, and is intended to serve as a nual formeditation on Pythagorean lines.
