Description: This statue includes the six instruments that are used in a jazz band: the sousaphone, saxophone, bass drum, snare drum, trombone, and trumpet. This piece allows the viewers to interact with it by pressing the buttons on the jazz stand to create the sound of each instrument. This allows them to participate in the jazz ensemble. This piece represents the music so important to the City and how it touches everyone who listens to it. Thank you, Barriane Franks, Art Major "Tri-centennial Band" Artwork by Barriane Franks

“Trilogy Freedom Dance Cycle”,
a narrative by Hannibal Lokumbe,
Composer, chose to cover his book with
a hand written letter by John T. Scott…
“In the beautifully crafted letter reproduced on the cover of this book, written to the author after reading “Trilogy”, the artist John T. Scott goes directly to the heart of the matter”:
“I believe it is within our power to heal this world we live in in some manner through our work. There are times when I wonder if it’s worth it, then I think of my children and grandchildren and the fact that they deserve a time to live without fear. My mule gets tired of pulling this load, but I can’t unhitch the wagon from my soul.
On my way back from the studio tonight it was really dark and as I came to this large field in which the fire flies were having a celebration my spirits were elevated. Love & Peace Your brother John

Bonner Scholars from Macalester College in St. Paul MN. visit Xavier Art 2600 “Community Through the Arts” class...
Since 2010 The Bonner Scholars program have been visiting New Orleans and meeting with the Xavier /Tulane Building Community through the Arts class for an interim semester course. I think they come for the better weather but it is more because New Orleans meets their six founding commitments and shared values with the outcomes of the Building Community class.
Diversity – We respect and embrace the many dimensions of diversity in our private and public lives.
Social Justice– We advocate for fairness, impartiality, and equality while addressing systemic social and environmental issues.
International Perspective – We develop international understanding that enables us to participate successfully in a global society.
Spiritual Exploration – We explore personal belief while respecting the spiritual practices of others.
Civic Engagement – We participate intentionally as a citizen in the democratic process, actively engaging in public policy and direct service.
Community Building – We establish and sustain a vibrant community of place, personal relationships, and common interests.
The Bonner Community Scholars Program is a four-year civic engagement program providing leadership programming, academic support, engagement opportunities and a social network.
Being a Bonner Scholar involves a commitment not only to service, but also to learning how to be an effective change agent for one’s campus, community, and beyond. Ideal Bonner candidates are passionate about civic engagement and eliminating systematic inequalities, demonstrate community involvement, embrace working in a team setting, have leadership potential, and a commitment to the Bonner mission of “Access to Education & Opportunity to Serve.”
