ObjectivesObjectivesTo provide enhanced Location-Based services for Info-mobility and Inter-modality applications, by the integration of Satellite Navigation and Communications functions.

Main project aims are:

To study and assess the GAUSS reference model, integrating NAV (GALILEO) and COM (S-UMTS-compatible) functions (the GAUSS Target System)

To demonstrate the GAUSS approach by exploiting existing facilities and performing new developments where required (the GAUSS Demonstrator)

To contribute in the standardisation process, with regard to both Galileo and UMTS

Main ChallengesMain Challenges

To develop advanced and innovative applicationsapplications

To develop an advanced n advanced multi-mode user terminalmulti-mode user terminal handling, in integrated manner, the COM and the NAV signals appearing in:

the S-UMTS band (COM signal) the GPS, EGNOS and GALILEO bands (NAV signal)

To specify and implement an access system tailored upon location-based services (requiring low-capacity and bursty resources) and featuring maximum commonalties with the emerging S-UMTS standard (W-CDMA)

GAUSS ServicesGAUSS Services

Location-Based (i.e. integrated NAV/COM) services

integrity and high accuracy (1-5m) (for Navigation)

global coverage, high reliability and continuity, quasi real-time (for Communications)

Characterised by the following requirements:

very great number of Mobile Users (MUs) for each Service Provider (SP) and Service Centre (SC)

Messages originating from MU always carry Position-Velocity & Timing (PVT) data

Project OverviewProject Overview

Page 8: The GAUSS Project GAUSS G ALILEO A nd U MTS S ynergetic S ystem Project Coordinator: A. Di Fazio (Telespazio) antonella_difazio@telespazio.it Presented.

Bursty and unbalanced traffic, with greater capacity requirement in the RL with respect to the FL

Services handled by GAUSS typically feature:

Two-way messages exchange between MUs and SPs/SCs

Low-bit rate transmission by the MUs of small data packets carrying accurate position and timing data

either periodically or asynchronously (e.g. upon request or following an event)

Messages can be generated:

Support of requirement for message acknowledgement

point-to-point (P-to-P),MU SP (NAV related messages)SP MU (service provisioning messages or ACK)

broad (B)-casting, SP all MU/subscribers broad-catching, SP all MU/subscribers multi (M)-casting, SP a group/set of MU multi-catching, SP a group/set of MU

Highly reliable and near real-time communications:

Service features: 1% - message loss probability 8 * 424 bit - maximum message size 1 msg/sec. - maximum message transmission rate 0.85 sec. - message transmission time 1% - blocking probability at busy hour

GAUSS Approach vs. S-UMTSGAUSS Approach vs. S-UMTS

The GAUSS system:

is conceived to constitute one of the UMTS RANs, optimized for the provision of location-based services

The GAUSS RAN is envisioned as fully integrated within the overall UMTS, not a competitor:

standard interfaces to the UMTS CN to be possibly complemented by other via-satellite RANs for supporting higher traffic levels and bit-rates

the GAUSS RAN is specifically designed to effectively and efficiently fulfil the requirements of inter-modality and info-mobility applications (small-size messages, low bit rate)

Tight integration & harmonisation between the 3G mobile networks and the GAUSS satellite component supporting the NAV/COM services:

Common Core Network, but distinct Radio Access Networks

Single User Terminal (dual mode) for Satellite and Terrestrial access

Basic System Design Concepts and Drivers

Reference to current standards with regard to architecture, interfaces, protocols

Use of consolidated and existing technologies as much as possible

Designed for maximum consistency with emerging S-UMTS standards

Adaptations required to best suit a service environment characterized by:

many MTs featuring very low activity highly-bursty low-rate communications support of broad/multi-casting communications transmission of structured short data packets

a common structure for all GAUSS services and applications

At application level, GAUSS messages are formatted as cells (the GAUSS CellGAUSS Cell), characterised by:

GAUSS applications typically require transmission of just 1 cell. Longer messages are anyway also supported, by concatenating up to 8 cells (424 bytes)

A GAUSS packet comprises the GAUSS cell plus the overhead needed for EDC and burst preamble

Messages are encapsulated into an UDP segment by the application, before delivery to the Upper Layers

The GAUSS message format is flexible, and capable of supporting virtually all kinds of message-based services (e.g., the so-called SAR services), in addition to those demonstrated within GAUSS

The GAUSS S-UMTS compatible access systemThe GAUSS S-UMTS compatible access system• The GAUSS access system was developed with regard to specifications being currently considered for S-UMTS

• Access is based on SW-CDMA: Forward Link: a solution close to DSCH approach specified by 3GPP Return Link: a reservation-based approach, based upon synchronous CDMA (GPS-assisted), with requests in slotted Aloha

The GAUSS User Terminal

a standard graphic system for position visualisation on digital maps

An multi-mode Mobile Terminal breadboard is being produced, comprising both ad-hoc developments and off-the-shelf items, i.e.:

an integrated NAV / COM digital receive front-end, able to de-multiplex: the NAV signals:

the current GPS signal simulated Galileo signals (E1 + E5)

and the COM signal, in the S-UMTS band

for COM: a transmit front-end, and a baseband & control section operating on CDMA and supporting the upper protocol layers

for NAV: a navigation receiver
