Future of Video: Agenda

• What is ONVIF? • Analog vs. IP • Why High Definition? • Video Management Solutions • Video Optics: Why cameras are changing • Camera Intelligence • Sample Security Solutions

What is ONVIF?

• Onvif– The Open Network Video Interface Forum, was founded primarily by Axis, Sony, and Bosch.

• Onvif is a communications protocol, like NTCIP, created as a universal protocol to make VMS systems and cameras plug n’ play.

• Onvif is rarely 100% compatible.

PSIA – The Physical Security Interoperability Alliance, was spearheaded by several manufacturers, including Cisco, GE, IBM, NICE, Pelco, Milestone, Genetec, and many others. Look for ONVIF or PSIA when selecting cameras

Adding

Ethernet Cable L2 switch

Why IP?

• Installation Costs

• Cost of Data storage vs. Demand for HD video

• Decentralization of Enterprise Systems

Vs.

Why Quality Matters – Low Light

• Scene Intelligence

• Color Reproduction

• Dynamic Range

• Light Requirement

• File Size: Recording Demand

Video Management Systems

Page 11: The Future of Video - Intelligent Transportation Society ...itsga.org/assets/1-future-of-video.pdf · The Future of Video . Presented By ... VSaaS • VSaas refers to hosted / Internet

Video Management Systems

• Video management software running on a Windows or Unix/Linux server, supplies the basis for video monitoring, analysis, and recording.

• The Past: physical location based recording (DVR, NVR, tapes)

• The Future: Edge recording, cloud management

Two examples: VSaaS and PSIM

Page 12: The Future of Video - Intelligent Transportation Society ...itsga.org/assets/1-future-of-video.pdf · The Future of Video . Presented By ... VSaaS • VSaas refers to hosted / Internet

VSaaS

• VSaas refers to hosted / Internet recording of security camera video.

• Software as a Service (SaaS) is a software delivery model that is sweeping the IT world. Software and associated data are centrally hosted in a cloud computing environment and accessed over the Internet.

• Differs from the traditional model of software delivery, where software is purchased and installed on a desktop or workstation.

Video Surveillance as a Service

Page 13: The Future of Video - Intelligent Transportation Society ...itsga.org/assets/1-future-of-video.pdf · The Future of Video . Presented By ... VSaaS • VSaas refers to hosted / Internet

PSIM

A category of software that provides a platform and applications created by middleware developers, Designed to integrate multiple unconnected security applications and devices and control them through one comprehensive user interface. Collects and correlates events from existing disparate security devices and information systems (video, access control, sensors, analytics, networks, building systems, etc.) to empower personnel to identify and proactively resolve situations.

Optics The HD Conundrum

• The market demands better optics

• Dome Optics are a science, few understand

• Higher megapixel cameras push the edge of dome, or

‘bubble’ technology, forcing market changes

No Dome (94mm):

Dome (94mm):

Page 15: The Future of Video - Intelligent Transportation Society ...itsga.org/assets/1-future-of-video.pdf · The Future of Video . Presented By ... VSaaS • VSaas refers to hosted / Internet

How high can optics go?

• Current Generation: 18x, 20x • Next Generation: 40, 50, 60x • Today general use CCTV cameras are 1.3

megapixel. That’s 1,300,000 pixels. • 4 megapixel cameras may seem tempting,

but can lead to many issues for surveillance.

Finding the balance between quality, cost,

and deployment is vital.

Improving Optics with Positioners Why pick a positioner?

• Flat viewing window creates better optics

• More mounting options

•Can utilize wipers and sunshields for glare areas

•Can be modular in design

Why not pick a positioner?

• Higher pricing and lower warranties compared to domes

•IP/NEMA ratings will be lower – less electronics protection

• Difficult to replace legacy dome equipment

Camera Intelligence

• The Past/Present – Location Based Recording

and Analytics

• The Future: – Edge Intelligence – Edge Recording

Page 18: The Future of Video - Intelligent Transportation Society ...itsga.org/assets/1-future-of-video.pdf · The Future of Video . Presented By ... VSaaS • VSaas refers to hosted / Internet

• Unique algorithms replace need for VMS analytics • The camera is the computer - higher levels of analytics • Video compression adapts to motion detection • Static scenes can drop bit rate up to 25% of set target

Edge Analytics

Edge Intelligence

Smart Cameras • Onboard monitoring of CPU, memory and other

thresholds • Hardware watchdog monitors software environment • The camera will never “stall” • SNMP for integration to IT monitoring software • Powerful diagnostics and system log reporting • ‘Imagine knowing you have a bad fan or surge?’

Page 19: The Future of Video - Intelligent Transportation Society ...itsga.org/assets/1-future-of-video.pdf · The Future of Video . Presented By ... VSaaS • VSaas refers to hosted / Internet

• Video is stored at the edges of the network instead of transporting it across the network to a centralized recording facility such as a Network Video Recorder.

• Previously was local storage, now the cameras will perform the storage

• Events and information can be called up on demand, or searched through VMS, limiting the bandwidth being used

Saving bandwidth and space

Edge Recording

Sample Solutions

• Encoder

• Camera (30x, 1080P)

• Pan/Tilt

• Transformer (110/220V Input )

• Cellular (LTE) Router
