Principal’s Message
It was lovely to walk through the gates of Forestville PS this morning and to see and feel the energy
within after my time away from school on long service leave.
I sincerely thank the members of our top notch School Leadership Team, led by Mrs Wellings, for
their very capable leadership and management of the school, and I am keen to catch up on the
many successes and achievements the school community has experienced during my absence.

Deputy Principal’s Message
MRS FERGUSON RETURNS
Cathie Ferguson returned to Forestville this morning and we are very pleased to see her after
her leave. We have all missed her and are very happy to see her so well and refreshed. She has
included a section in the newsletter to all of our Forestville community.
NAPLAN RESULTS
NAPLAN results will be given to students in Years 3 and 5 tomorrow afternoon. There has been
some media attention relating to the tests, as some students did them online while other
students, like Forestville, did the pen and paper tests. The results from these tests will assist us
in planning for 2019 and provide insights into areas of strength and areas needing
improvement.
NAPLAN READINESS TEST
All of the NAPLAN readiness tests went well last Thursday and students managed to complete
the required tasks. This test allowed the school to ensure all of the needs and requirements for
the delivery of NAPLAN in 2019 will be in place. We thank all parents and students for their
cooperation with this trial.
DANCESPORT PERFORMANCE
What a thrill it was to be able to attend our inaugural year of Dancesport at the Quaycentre
Arena at Homebush last Monday night. Our Year 5 student team were exemplary in their
performances and looked very glamorous in their dance outfits of black, white and purple. The
high levels of skills that the students acquired over the 15 weeks of Dancesport were
phenominal, and many of our student teams received medals….all of the parents and teachers
were so proud of the whole team! It is a new program which is gaining momentum and
interest across many Northern Sydney schools and beyond. Over 9000 Year 5 students across
NSW now participate in Dancesport. It is highly energetic and collaborative while also requiring
students to follow routines and stay on the beat. Special thanks got to Brad, the Dancesport
teacher, and to our Year 5 teachers, Christian Guzman, Nicole Amery, Brianna Wilson and May
Chiu for supporting the program and working with students to ensure their participation and
success at the event. It was better than wonderful!
STATE DANCE FESTIVAL
Forestville Senior Dance group performed in the State Dance Festival at the Seymour Centre
last Tuesday. Our students were outstanding and performed with flair and were very polished
and poised. An enormous thankyou to Vanessa Price, their choreographer and teacher, and to
Katy Costa, who puts in hours of time and lots of enthusiasm to organise these events for our
students. I feel so privileged to be able to watch such high levels of dance coming from
Forestville. We are up there with the best!
On Monday 15 October, all Year 3-6 students who have been in, or are still in, PSSA teams this year
will be having their sport team photos taken.
The sports include: Eagle Tag, AFL, Rugby Union (Boys and the Girls 7s), Soccer, Netball, T-ball,
Softball, Cricket, Paul Kelly Cup boys/girls, Zone/Regional teams for swimming, cross-country and
athletics. (The Zone and Regional teams might also include some Year 2 students.)
On the same day the 2018 House Captains for Wentworth, Sturt, Cook and Flinders will be taken as
well as the 2018 Dance and Choir Captains and the Flag Monitors.
The Drumming Group will also have their photo taken. They are to wear sport uniform and bring
their drums.
All students involved in the photo day are asked to wear their normal sport uniform and bring any
other uniform (or part of a uniform) that they wore when playing a PSSA sport. Soccer and rugby
tops will be given out on the day and if you wore long socks to play any of the above mentioned
sports, please bring them.
Attention: Day 1 Term 4 – Sport Photos (+ other groups)
K-2 SPORTS DAY
Our K-2 Sports Day was again a wonderful success. The students all participated energetically and
parents and families were supportive and involved as they accompanied students to their activity
stations. I would like to thank the K-2 team for their organisation and enthusiasm and for
ensuring our students had such a wonderful experience celebrating their sporting skills in a fun-
filled and positive way.
BULLYING ARTICLE
Children may come home and report an incident at school and refer to it as bullying. The article
contained in the link below helps us to understand the difference between bullying and incidents
on meanness. Please read this article from ‘Parentshop’ as it may help you provide an explanation
I am delighted that this term, our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate
in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey
measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The
focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices.
The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on
what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that
teachers interact with them. Schools in Australia and around the world have used the Tell ThemFrom Me survey to help improve how they do things at school.
More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au.
I want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically
take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 3
September and 26 October. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary.
A consent form and FAQS for parents/carers about the survey is attached to this newsletter and
available at the school office. If you do not want your child or children to participate, please return
the form to school by Monday, 24 September. Copies of the form and FAQs are available from:
