The First 5 Generations of the George Boone Family

The following genealogy begins with the earliest known ancestor of Daniel Boone (so-called George

Boone 1) as recorded in the “Old James Boone Genealogy” written by James Boone, March 21st, 1788.

The original, beautifully hand-written document is located at the Historical Society of Wisconsin, and

offered here as a starting point. We have added comments in italics to his work, and indicated where we

have copies of the original hand-written Old-English source record. Although we have hired several

genealogists to search for English Boone records, including the lead clerks in the Devon Record Office in

Exeter, England, the original records we have found do not contain any new information, but they do

confirm details of James Boone’s records.

Five generations of descendants of George Boone I are listed below. Four main sources are used for this

information: (1) “Old James Boone Genealogy,” (2) our own records obtained from the Devon Record

Office (printed in blue ink below), (3) Hazel Atterbury Spraker’s book, The Boone Family (referred to

simply as “Spraker”), and Sarah Ridge Rockenfield’s book Our Boone Families, Daniel Boone’s Kinfolks,

USA Boones (referred to simply as “Rockenfield”. Rockenfield is out of print and not available at this

time.) Please keep in mind that this is a work in progress and we would be happy to have your comments.

“Our GENEALOGY, or PEDIGREE; traced as far back as had come to the knowledge of John Boone (the

son of George & Mary Boone): written by James Boone (Grandson of the said George & Mary Boone).”

1st Generation

“GEORGE BOONE I, (that is the first that we have heard of) was born in England.”

The Boone Society, the Devon Record Office, and other hired British genealogists have not been able to

find a birth, marriage or death record for this George Boone of England.

Important: No source has even been found for the name of Ann Fallace or her alleged connection to

George Boone 1st or any George Boone. The Boone Society will refrain from using the Fallace name

until it can be proven, and we suggest you do the same.

2nd

Generation

“GEORGE BOONE II, (Son of George Boone, the First) was born in or near the City of Exeter in

Devonshire; being a Blacksmith; his Wife’s Maiden Name was Sarah Uppey. (or possibly Oppey) He died

age 60; and she died aged 80 years, and never had an aching Bone, or decay’d Tooth.”

The Boone Society has not been able to find the marriage or birth records for George Boone II and his wife

Sarah, and cannot confirm her maiden name of Uppey. Because “Uppey” is used in the Old James Boone

Genealogy, the Boone Society accepts it, and “Oppey/Opie” are names also under consideration.

However, The Boone Society does have burial records for both George II and his widow (written “wido” in

the old records) Sarah, which are recorded at Stoke Canon Parish, Exeter, England. (The Church at Stoke

Canon is St. Magdelene.) The original records are now located at the Devon Record Office in Exeter,

England and they read as follows:

Documents owned by the Boone Society:

George Boone was buried ye thirty first of May 1696

Sarah Boon “wido” was buried ye 5th of February 1708

Relying on the James Boone Genealogy that George II was age 60 at his death, then his approximate year

of birth is calculated to be 1636; and Sarah, age 80 at her death, would have been born 1628.

Also, the Boone Society has Stoke Canon Parish baptism records for three children of George Boone I and

wife Sarah: (1) Henry; (2) George I; & (3) John. Although they may have had other children, only records

of three children have been found. These 3 records are:


(1) Henry Son of George Boone was baptized the nineteenth of October 1663

Henry Son of George Boone was buryed ye eighth of February 1663

(Note: Yes, the baptism and burial dates for Henry are correct! In the old style reckoning [Julian

calendar], March 25 was the beginning of the year, therefore the infant Henry would have been about 4

months old at his burial.)


(2) George son of George Boone was baptized the Nineteenth of March 1666

(3) John Son of George Boone was baptized the twentieth day of April 1673

John Boone was buryed the 18th

day of April 1693

3rd

Generation

“GEORGE BOONE III, (son of George and Sarah Boone) was born at Stoak (a Village near the City of

Exeter) in A.D. 1666, being a Weaver; his Wife’s Maiden Name was Mary Mogridge, who was born in

Bradninch (eight Miles from the City of Exeter) in the Year 1669, being a Daughter of John Mogridge &

Mary his Wife whose maiden Name was Milton.

They (the said George & Mary Boone) had nine Children that lived to be Men and Women: namely,

George, Sarah, Squire, Mary, John, Joseph, Benjamin, James & Samuel, having each of them several

Children, excepting John who was never married. (A daughter named Mary died in infancy, so they named

a later daughter Mary also.) The said George and Mary Boone with their Family, came from the Town of

Bradninch in Devonshire, Old-England (which is a Town at 8 miles Distance from the City of Exeter, and

177 measured Miles Westward from London); they left Bradninch the 17 Aug. 1717, and went to Bristol

where they took Shipping, and arrived at Philadelphia in 1717 September 29, Old-Stile, or October 10th

New-Stile; three of their Children, to wit, George, Sarah & Squire they sent in a few Years before. From

Philadelphia they went to Abington, and staid a few Months there; thence to North-Wales and liv’d about 2

Years there; thence to Oley in the same County of Philadelphia, where Sarah (being married) had moved to

some Time before. This last Place of their Residence (since the Divisions made in the Township of Oley &

County of Philadelphia) is called the Township of Exeter in the County of Berks: It was called Exeter,

because they came from a Place near the City of Exeter. And,

“He the said George Boone the Third died on the Sixth Day of the Week, near 8 o’clock in the Morning, on

the 27th

of July 1744, aged 78 Years; and Mary his Wife died on the 2d Day of the Week, on the 2d of

February 1740-1; aged 72 years; and were decently interred in Friends Burying-Ground, in the said

Township of Exeter. When he died, he left 8 children, 52 Grand-Children, and 10 Great-Grand-Children,

Living; in all 70, being as many Persons as the House of Jacob which came into Egypt.”

The Boone Society has the marriage record of George III & Mary Maugridge (note different spelling of

“Moggridge” on original old English hand-written document below) performed at St. Disen’s Church in

Bradninch:

The Boone Society has copies of actual baptisms at St. Disen’s Church in Bradninch, Devonshire, England,

for 6 of the children of George Boone III and wife Mary. (Note: the Old James Boone Genealogy gives us

the actual birth dates.) George III & Mary actually had 10 children, which include two daughters named

Mary, (the first died in infancy). The children are numbered (1) through (10) below:


(1.) 1690 George ye son of George Boone baptized the 20th

day of July (George IV)

From James Boone Genealogy: “GEORGE BOONE IV (the eldest Son of George & Mary

Boone) was born in the Town of Bradninch aforesaid, on the 13th

of July 1690 about ½ H. past 5 in the

Afternoon; and died in Exeter Township aforesaid, on the 20 November 1753; in the 64th

Year of his Age.

He taught School for several Years near Philadelphia; was a good Mathematician, and taught the Several

Branches of English Learning; and was a Magistrate for several Years. His wife’s maiden name was

Deborah Howell. She died in 1759 January 26.”

They married 27 July 1713 in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. Page 590 of Hazel Spraker, “The

Boone Family” showing minutes of the Abington Monthly Meeting of Quakers:

5 mo 27, 1713 (27 July 1713 – old style calendar first month was March): Whereas George Boone and

Deborah Howell, the daughter of William Howell, having declared their marriage intentions before two

Mo. Meetings, Enquiry being made by persons Appointed and found Clear from all others on ye account of

marriage, Did accomplish their Marriage in ye United of Friends as is signified by their Marriage

Certificate.”


(2.) 1692 Sarah ye daughter of George Boone baptized the 28th

day of March

From James Boone Genealogy: “SARAH BOONE (Daughter of George & Mary Boone) was

born on the Fifth Day of the Week, about ½ H. past 11 in the Forenoon, on the 18th

of February 1691-2.”

Sarah married Jacob Stover 15 March 1715 in Pennsylvania, Hazel Spraker, The Boone Family p. 23.

“No known children of Sarah Boone & Jacob Stover,” explains Spraker, “Sarah married Jacob Stover

15 Mar 1715, as recorded in Christ Church, Philadelphia. … possible that she died quite young, and her

descendants, if any, are unknown. While she was the first in the family to settle in in the Oley Township,

she evidently did not affiliate with the Friends Meeting there, as no data concerning her appears in Quaker

records. She was no doubt absorbed by the German element into which she married … In 1738 a wife

Margaret (Stover) signed a deed for land sold by Jacob to another person, so Margaret was probably a

second wife.”

(Some researchers believe there were children of this marriage, or at least of Stover’s second marriage.

Proof sources here would be welcomed.)

From James Boone Genealogy: “SQUIRE BOONE (son of George & Mary Boone) was born on the

Fourth Day of the Week, between 11 & 12 in the Forenoon, on the 25 November 1696.” (Document

Squire married Sarah Morgan the “23rd

day of ye 7th

month in the year of our Lord 1720” at the Gwynedd

Meeting of Quakers, Philadelphia Co*, Pennsylvania.

(The marriage is recorded in the records of the Society of Friends, and is quoted on page 32 of Hazel

Spraker’s The Boone Family. As a footnote on said page 32, Spraker says, “This part of Philadelphia

County later became Berks County.)

Squire died 2 January 1765 and Sarah died 1777; both buried at Mocksville, North Carolina.

(5.) 1699 Mary ye daughter of George Boone baptized the same day (previous entry Oct 13, 1699).

(Note: This Mary was the second daughter of George & Mary Boone named Mary, not an uncommon

practice when the first one died – see child #3 above).

From James Boone Genealogy: “MARY BOONE (daughter of George & Mary Boone) was born Sept. 23,

A.D. 1699: She was the Wife of John Webb, and departed this Life the 16th

of January 1774, in the 75th

year of her Age; her Husband died in the same Year, October 18th

, in the 80th

Year of his Age.”

Mary Boone married John Webb 13 Sept 1720 in Philadelphia Co, Pennsylvania


(6.) 1701 John ye son of George Boone baptized January ye 30th

He was a school teacher and it was he who preserved the family births and deaths and passed it on

to his nephew James (son of James & Mary) who wrote the Old James Boone Genealogy, and quoted here:

Continuing with Old James Boone Genealogy:

“JOHN BOONE, Senior (Note: called “Senior” by James Boone, because James also had a son named

John, called John, Junior.) John Boone Senior, (the third Son of George & Mary Boone) was born in the

Town of Bradninch, in Devonshire in Old-England on the Seventh Day of the Week, about 10 or 11

o’clock in the Forenoon, on the 3 January 1701-2, Old-Stile, or A. D. 1702 January 14, New Stile. And he

departed this Life on the 10th

Day of October 1785, on the Second Day of the Week, Sixteen Minutes after

Midnight, in the 84th

Year of his Age (being the oldest of our Name & Family, that we have heard of ); and

was decently interred in Friends Burial Ground at Exeter the next Day. He (with his Parents, etc.) left

Great-Britain in the 16th

Year of his Age, and lived exactly 68 years here (in North-America) from the Day

he landed at Philadelphia. He lived only 5 Weeks and 4 Days after the Decease of his Brother James. N.B.

All of our Relations of the Name of Boone, who were living after 1785 October 10, are American born, as

far as we know.” (Hazel Spraker in her book, “Our Boone Family,” indicated John Boone never married.)

Sometime after 1701, but before 1717 when George III moved to America, the George Boone III family

joined the Quakers at Cullompton, just outside of Exeter, (Devon, England) and thus baptism records for

their remaining 4 children were not recorded. Their remaining 4 children were: Joseph, Benjamin, James

& Samuel and their birth and death information is shown as recorded by James Boone. All were born in

England.

Continuing from James Boone Genealogy:

(7) “JOSEPH BOONE (son of George {III} & Mary Boone) was born between 4 & 5 in the Afternoon, on

the 5th

of April 1704; and he departed this Life on the 30 January 1776, in the 72d Year of his Age (Berks

Co, PA). His Wife Catherine died on the 31st of January 1778, and was interred at Exeter (Berks Co., PA)

the next Day exactly 2 Years after the Burial of her Husband.”

Hazel Spraker, in her book, The Boone Family quotes from early Exeter (PA) Records: “8-30-1733,

Joseph Boone produced a paper of condemnation for proceeding in marriage contrary to order.”

Neither Spraker nor the Old James Boone Genealogy give a last name for wife Catherine, but Sarah Ridge

Rockenfield in her book, Our Boone Families, Daniel Boone’s Kinfolks, USA Boones, gives name of wife of

Joseph Boone, son of George Boone III & Mary Maugridge, as Catherine Warren. If this is true, it’s

interesting that both Joseph Boone Sr. and Joseph Jr. had a wife with the same maiden name of Warren.

Hazel Spraker lists no known children for this couple. The Boone Society has determined, however, that

Joseph Boone Sr. and his wife Catherine had at least 3 sons (see Generation 5 for info on their

children). Some researchers believe this couple had other children and any proof documents of other

children would be welcomed.

Continuing from James Boone Genealogy:

(8) Benjamin Boone (Son of George and Mary Boone) was born the 16th

of July 1706 and he died on the

14th

of October, 1762, in the 57th

Year of his Age. Susanna Boone (his Widow) died on the 5th

of

November, 1784, in the 76th

Year of her Age.

Benjamin married twice, first to Ann Farmer 31 October 1726 at Abington, Pennsylvania (marriage is

recorded in the Abington Meeting of Quakers); and married 2nd

in about 1736 to Susanna Likens/Lycon.

In Benjamin’s will he mentions, “Susanna, my dearly beloved wife”. The will is signed 5 January 1762,

proved 27 October 1762, recorded Berks County, Pennsylvania. The Boone Society has determined

Susanna’s last name was Likens/Lycon.

As proof of Susanna’s last name, we refer to a May 12-13, 1733 land transaction when Andrew Lycon

and his wife Anne sold 200 acres at Manatawny, Pennsylvania, to Benjamin Boone of Oley Township,

Pennsylvania (Berks County Deeds Book 1, pp. 68-69). We also cite Dr Peter Stebbins Craig, F.A.S.G.,

who has written the definitive work on “The 1693 Census of the Swedes on the Delaware” which was

published in 1993 by Studies in Swedish American Genealogy of Winter Park, Florida.

On page 36 of this heavily documented volume, Craig proves the surname of Susanna LIKENS (also

spelled LYKINS/LYCAN, etc.), the 2nd

wife of Benjamin Boone, uncle of the frontiersman Daniel Boone.

Susanna LIKEN Boone’s parents, Andrew LIKEN (Anders LYCON) “and his wife Anne sold 200 acres

at Manatawny (now Amity Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania, acquired in 1721 from Mans

Jonasson (Ander’s brother-in-law), to Benjamin Boone of Oley Township….Berks County”.

Page 41, Spraker’s The Boone Family: “When and where Benjamin married the second wife Susanna

(surname unknown) has not been learned. It is probable that he married the second time out of the Quaker

fold, possibly about 1736. At this time he was in disfavor at Gwynedd Meeting.” The minutes give this

item: “February 27, 1736, Benjamin Boone has not been spoken to since last Meeting”.

(9) “JAMES BOONE, Senr, (the Sixth Son of George & Mary Boone) was born in the Town of

Bradninch, in Devonshire, in Old-England about ½ Hour past 2 in the Morning, on the 7th

of July (Old-

Stile) or the 18th

of July (New-Stile), Anno Domini 1709. And in 1735 May 15 (O.S.) he married Mary

Foulke by whom he had fourteen Children, and Nine of them lived to be Men & Women, namely, Anne,

Mary, Martha, James, John, Judah, Joshua, Rachel, & Moses. The Said James Boone, Senior, & Mary his

Wife lived together 20 Years 8 Months & 25 Days; and She departed this life on the 6th

Day of the Week, at

20 Minutes past one o’Clock in the Afternoon, on the 20th

Day of February 1756, aged 41 years & 11

Weeks, and was decently interred in Friends Burying-Ground at Exeter on the First Day of the next Week.

And in 1757, October 20, he married Anne Griffith, being just 20 Months after the Decease of his former

Wife. And here, for the Satisfaction of the Curious, I shall insert a few Chronological Remarks, viz. --

The said Mary Boone deceased in 1756 Feb. 20, at 20 Minutes past one in the Afternoon, which wanted but

two Minutes & Sixteen Seconds of 20 o’Clock according to the Italian Manner of Reckoning (for the

Italians, Jews, & some others, always begin their Day at Sun-Set); which was the 20th

of the Zenith Month

ADAR, when the Moon was 20 Days old, and 4 Weeks before the Vernal Equinox.

The said James Boone, Senior, married Anne Griffith in 1757 October 10, at 20 Minutes past one in the

Afternoon; that is, he was married to his Second (or last) Wife exactly 20 Months after the Decease of his

first, and 4 Weeks after the Autumnal Equinox.”

“JAMES BOONE, Senior, departed this Life on the 1st Day of September, A. D. 1785, on the Fifth Day of

the Week, at ten Minutes after nine o’Clock at Night, in the 77th

Year of his Age; and was decently interred

in Friends Burying-Ground at Exeter on the Seventh Day of the Same Week. He (with his Parents, etc.)

left Great-Britain in the 9th

Year of his Age, and lived Almost 68 Years in Pennsylvania. N.B. When he

was born, it was between 9 & 10 at Night here in Pennsylvania (allowing for the Difference of Longitude);

and he died between 9 & 10 at Night.”

“Mary Foulke (Daughter of Hugh & Anne Foulke) was born at North-Wales in Philadelphia County, A. D.

1714 December 5 (N.S.) – James Boone, Senior, & Mary Foulke were married, A. D. 1735 May 26, (N.S.)

and lived together 20 years, 8 months and 25 Days. She departed this Life, A. D. 1756 Feb. 20 at 20

Minutes past one in the Afternoon, in the 42nd

Year of her Age.”

(10) SAMUEL BOONE, per Spraker, p. 24, “Samuel b. about 1711.” Per Old James Boone Genealogy:

Samuel Boone (the youngest Son of George & Mary Boone) departed this Life on the 6th

of August 1745,

and was buried at Exeter (PA) the next Day, aged about 34 Years.” Spraker, p. 49: Samuel married

Elizabeth Cassel 29 October 1734 in Pennsylvania.

1750 (St. Gabriel’s Episcopal Church Morlatton, Amity, Berks Co, PA.) p. 56 SPRAKER: In the Minutes

of the Exeter Meetings: on 30 May 1750 Josiah BOONE was condemned for a "disorderly" marriage, but

the name of his wife is not mentioned. Josiah's children signed a deed for their interest in their father's

estate which is on record in Versailles, Woodford Co, KY.

DAR records indicate that Josiah married 1st Hannah Henton, and 2

nd Hannah Hite.

Josiah married Hannah Henton (dau of George HENTON and Persis BOONE). Hannah b 1728 Exeter,

Berks Co, PA d 1759 Exeter, Berks Co, PA. They had four children. Hannah HENTON was not a Quaker.

Spraker, p. 56: In the list of Removals in the Exeter Meeting records is this entry: “June 24, 1762, Josiah

Boone to Bradford, M.”

Josiah married in 1766 to Hannah HITE b 1727 Exeter, Berks Co, PA d 31 Oct 1814 Woodford Co, KY

and they had six children.

DAR ID No.154512 V155 p161 Josiah served as a private and as guard of the Salt Works under Capt

Samuel KIRKMAN, Virginia Troops. (Also DAR ID NO 13752). 1794 Josiah Noah BOONE was a

Corporal, Whitakers Battalion Kentucky Mounted Volunteers.

The Virginia State Records list Josiah, served in the American Rev Virginia State Militia: Josiah BOONE,

guard duty at the Salt Works under Capt Samuel KIRKHAM in 1782 and on 22 Oct 1782 as a member of

an expedition against the enemy Indians under Gen CLARK. Served 32 days. Rev Service Papers:

"Josiah BOONE, Sr. was in the Lincoln Militia as Guard serving under Capt Samuel KIRKMAN, VA

troops & Col. Daniel BOONE, who was a first cousin of Josiah BOONE, Sr.

After the Rev War, Josiah and Hannah HITE moved to Woodford Co, KY.

(8.) Jeremiah BOONE b 6 Sept 1729 Exeter, Berks Co, PA d 20 Feb 1787-30 March 1787 Unmarried; no

children SPRAKER p 31 has his will on this page

(9.) Abigail BOONE b 9 Oct 1732 Exeter, Berks Co, PA d (probably before 18 Nov 1753, the date her

father signed his will. (SPRAKER p31) “She is not mentioned in the will of her father.”

(10.) Hezekiah BOONE b 22 May 1735 Exeter, Berks Co, PA d 20 Dec 1823 Woodford Co, KY. He

married Prisilla Truelock and her death date was 5 Apr 1810 in Woodford County, KY. These dates on

found on the tombstones where they are buried in Clover Bottom Cemetery on Brushy Creek Road in

Woodford County, Kentucky.

Rowan Co, NC. According to the Moravians who treated him near Winston-Salem, NC, Israel died before

June 1756 in Rowan Co, NC of “consumption.” We have since learned the correct death date of 26 June

1756. Daniel BOONE reared his children. SPRAKER says "He was testified against in Exeter Meeting for

"Marrying out, Dec 31, 1747.” The name of his wife is unknown, but recent mtDNA tests have proven that

she was not of American Indian descent, which some have opined in recent years.

1816 SPRAKER p58-60, “Samuel Boone was one of the first of Squire Boone’s children to marry,

although it is not know whether the marriage occurred in Pennsylvania or North Carolina. It is said Sarah

(Day) Boone was a young Quakeress of education who taught her young brother-in-law Daniel Boone to

In an excerpt from a letter to Lyman Draper in Aug 1858 by Enoch M. Boone (son of Squire Boone Jr. & a

nephew of Daniel Boone):

“Jonathan BOONE – came early to Kentucky – remembers him at Squire Boone’s Station as early as 1783,

and tended Squire Boone’s Mill. After a few years settled on Green River and after living there several

years then settled at the Big Falls of the Wabash (near Mt. Carmel, Wabash Co) on the Illinois side, not

more than 15 miles if that, above the mouth of the Wabash where he built a mill. There he died abaout

1808 – don’t know where his wife died, or how old he was. Left several daughters … and three sons, John,

Joseph and Daniel.”

Edward was killed by Indians while returning from the Blue Licks with his brother Daniel Boone where

they had gone to make salt and do some hunting. They stopped at a stream in Bourbon County and Edward

sat down on a log to watch the horses while Daniel went off in the cane in search of game. A small band of

Indians shot and killed Edward. Daniel escaped, and returned the next day with men from Boone Station

where they and their families were living at the time, and they buried Edward there where he had been

killed. Draper letters report that in about 1827, some of Edward's bones were left exposed from flooding,

and the Rev. Richard Thomas collected the bones and reburied them at the Rockbridge Baptist Church

(10) Nathaniel Boone, b. abt. 1742 (died an infant) This may be new information for some, therefore, an

extensive documentation follows. The Boone Society gratefully acknowledges the research of Society

member Kathryn Weiss for documenting Nathaniel Boone as a child of Squire & Sarah Morgan Boone.

Here is documented her findings:

“Two independent, yet strikingly similar accounts of the children of Squire Boone, Sr. and Sarah Morgan

were made in: Samuel Bryan’s 1830 History of the Bryans attached to his Revolutionary War pension; and

Captain Samuel Boone’s 1855 letter to frontier historian Lyman Draper. Both Samuel Bryan and Samuel

Boone were grandsons of Squire and Sarah M. Boone, and the two men (who were first cousins) were

naming their Boone aunts and uncles for posterity. Both Samuel Boone and Samuel Bryan named a twelfth

child, Nathaniel, for their grandparents Squire Boone, Sr. and Sarah Morgan. Samuel Bryan wrote in his

brief History of the Bryans in 1830, “William, my father comeing to the age of 22 years married Mary

Boone daughter of Squire Boone the 1, and sister of Colo. Daniel Boone the explorer and settler of

Kentucky. Squire Boone who was from the west of England to Pennsylvania where he married Sarah

Morgan, of welch extraction by whom he had twelve children, Eight Sons, and four daughters, which were

named Sarah, Israel, Samuel, Jonathan, Elizabeth, Daniel, Mary*, George, Nathaniel, Edward, Squire, and

Hannah; with his wife and these children he remov,d from Pennsylvania to Rowan County in North

Carolina…” (NARA:W9366)

“Captain Samuel Boone, (1782-1869) was a son of George Boone and Ann Linville. Samuel Boone wrote

to Lyman Draper, Sept. 10, 1855: “Some time in the year 1717, George Boone Grandfather of the late Col.

Daniel Boone came from england and Brought with him I think seven sons and settled all or the most of

them in the state of pensylvania. Squire Boone one of the seven sons married Sarah Morgan and settled in

Bucks County where they raised the following number of Children to wit: eight sons and four Daughters

first Israel; second Samuel; third Jonathan; fourth Daniel; fifth George; sixth Nathaniel who died when

young; seventh Squire; eighth Edward. Daughters: first Sarah who married a Willcox; second Elizibeth

married William Grant; third Mary Bryan; fourth Hannah who married John Stewart.” (WHS: DM22C67).

Mulkey Meetinghouse. On 14 Feb 1765 in Yadkin, Rowan Co, NC, Hannah m John STUART

(STEWART) b 1744 PA and killed by Indians Jan 1770. (Rockenfield has 22 Dec 1770). He was shot and

killed by Shawnee Indians and his body found five years later in a standing hollow Sycamore Tree.

Hannah m2 Richard Pennington 15 May 1777 in Rowan Co, NC and they soon settled in White Co, TN.

27-28, written by Hazel Spraker discloses the fact that Hugh Boone (d. 1805) of Berks Co., PA, was a son

of Joseph Boone (b. 1704). Spraker continues to say that it was proved that Isaac Boone of Berks Co, PA,

was also a son of Joseph Boone, by evidence of old wills that Hugh and Isaac were brothers. (The Boone

Family, by Spraker, p. 503, states Isaac’s will dated 1794.)

Records of Hugh Boone, son of Joseph Boone, include (1) the Will of Hugh Boone (Book 4, p 324, Berks

County, Pa.) made 14 Jun 1805, probated 11 Nov 1805; (2) Deed of Mordecai Boone (Deed Book 24, p 53,

8 Jul 1809) in Reading, PA, Mordecai Boone to John Heine; (3) Deed of Hugh Boone (Deed Book 13, p

512, 18 Feb 1794) in Reading, Hugh Boone and wife Catherine to Lyon Vanamringe; (4) Deed of Joseph

Boone (Deed Book 22, p 439, 16 Apr 1768) in Reading, Joseph Boone and wife Catherine to Hugh Boone,

one of the sons of Joseph.

Also, Boone Family Association, Bulletin No. 9, July 1, 1933, page 147, in an article by Hazel Spraker

(written from information she discovered after publishing her now-famous book). The BFA article is

titled, “Joseph Boone Sr. and Joseph Boone Jr. of Berks County, PA,” and Spraker refers to the

following important indenture:

Indenture Made 16 April, 1785, between Jacob Boone of Exeter Twp., Berks Co, PA,

Yeoman, and Samuel DeTurk of Amity Twp., Berks Co., PA. This indenture traces title to 500 acres of

land from William Penn, Proprietor of Pennsylvania to John Millington, 1682, through Ralph Ashton,

Gentleman, of Philadelphia to Squire Boone of (then) Phila Co., one half of said 500 acres, 1730;

Squire Boone and Sarah to Joseph Boone Sen. of Amity, 106 acres of above land, 1750; also

Proprietors of Pennsylvania 1738, to Joseph Boone Sen. of Amity, 184 acres (Phila Book A, p. 112)

Joseph Boone Jun. died intestate leaving a widow, Elizabeth, and ten children, the said Jacob,

Joseph, Thomas, Ovid, Abner, Johab, Ann, Catherine, Sarah and Hannah. (These children will be shown

The real estate of Joseph Boone Jun. was adjudged by Orphans’ Court of Berks Co. to his son

Jacob Boone and the land was sold to Joseph DeTurk by Jacob and wife Mary for 1000 pounds in 1785.
