With the lighter nights and warmer temperatures here again
(I know we’ve had a mild winter), we have been busying
ourselves in the garden already. As every enthusiast would
tell you, there’s plenty to do. Not only are we undertaking
the more usual tasks typical for the season, but also getting
ready for our new arrivals! We have decided to take on
some ex-battery hens, otherwise destined for slaughter and I
haven’t been so excited for years (I live a very sheltered life!) .
I went on line to www.bhwt.org.uk, did some ‘homework’ and
after much pondering (keeping hens isn’t to be taken lightly),
decided hen adopting was for us! Chicken coop ordered,
fencing on its way.....
Happy Mother’s Day !

are discussed fully, and the finished look creates a natural enhancement of your features.
The procedure involves the implantation of naturally occurring pigments into the skin. It differs from a tattoo in that it is not implanted as deeply and inks are not used, hence it is semi-permanent. Colours can be blended to find a perfect shade to suit your skin tone. The procedure itself is comfortable, indeed some ladies fall asleep during the eyebrow procedure.
Kathryn gained her Diploma of Excellence with Finishing Touches, one of the UK’s leading cosmetic and medical tattooing specialists, she also holds a BA (Hons) and Licentiate in Traditional Acupuncture and has practised locally for over 6 years. She has
a loyal following of clients, one lady coming as far as Kent. Appearance is very important. It influences your self-esteem and confidence. Natural looking semi-permanent make-up enhances the key features, eyes, eyebrows and lips, so you can wake up looking your best every day. It is amazing just how many ladies spend valuable time each morning drawing on their brows with pencil. Usually all they achieve are poorly shaped brows of an inappropriate colour, which has smudged by lunchtime ...... not a good look!
See Kathryn’s advert for great 2012 offers. Investing in yourself is one of the most important investments you can make. Enjoy a beautiful start to Spring.

How does it work? You can be coached over the phone, face to face or by email, the choice is totally yours. The sessions are normally up to an hour and
depending on your requirements, most of my clients have between 4 and 6 sessions in order to achieve their goal. You may have sessions weekly, fortnightly or monthly, depending on your goals and how you would like to work.
How will I know if it is for me? I offer a one hour session totally free of charge, so that
we can see if we can work together as well as to see if it is for you. So, why not contact me to book in a session to see how it will work for you?

First Aid for your feet...The human foot was originally designed to travel on soft, natural surfaces like earth and sand. Unfortunately, instead of soft earth, we now spend every day walking and standing on unnatural hard, flat surfaces like pavements and floors. These surfaces force our feet to roll inwards to gain ground contact and our arches flatten. This rolling inwards of the foot (‘excessive pronation’) is believed to affect over 50% of the population. Just like the tyres on a car, poor alignment of the feet can cause wear and tear to other parts of the body. Excessive pronation often disrupts normal knee function and hip alignment and increases
forces on the muscles in the lower back. Subsequently, excess pronation can cause a wide range of common complaints:
Heel pain (‘plantarfasciitis’) Shin pain (‘shin splints’), knee and back pain
Ball of foot pain (‘metatarsalgia’ or ‘neuroma’)
Tired, aching legs
Corns & callousesThe answer is to treat the cause of these complaints - not just the symptoms. In other words, by restoring the lower limb’s natural angle we can align the feet and body
posture to their neutral position and take away the cause of these problems. This is one aspect of the work of the Podiatrists at Health First, who use functional foot orthoses (‘orthotics’) to correct these problems.First Aid For Feet Health First, South Warwickshire’s supplier of Foot Care Products direct to the public (www.firstaidforfeet.co.uk, asked their own Chiropodist / Podiatrist, Jonathan Small, for some foot facts.“The foot is a complex part of the body with 26 bones, 19 muscles, about 30 joints, and many ligaments in each foot. On average,
your feet walk over 3 times round the world in a lifetime. There are numerous things that can cause problems, but many will respond to first aid from yourself. We all spend time and money looking after our teeth and hair, but often neglect our feet. However if you suffer from foot problems, you will know that when your feet hurt, it can hurt all over.” Jonathan, who is one of the most experienced clinicians in the management of foot problems within the county, finished with an important lesson for us all to note. “Prevention is the best treatment and by carrying out good, regular foot care, you can avoid many painful foot problems.”“Man’s foot is all his own. It is unlike any other foot. It is the most distinctly human part of the whole of his anatomical make-up. It is a human specialisation and, whether he be proud of it or not, it is his hallmark and so long as Man has been Man and so long as he remains Man it is by his feet that he will be known from all other members of the animal kingdom.” – Frederick Wood-Jones D.Sc., F.R.S., F.R.C.S.The foot consists of 26 bones, 33 muscles, 30 joints, and over 100 ligaments. It is a marvel of biological engineering. It is subject to more pressure and to more injury than any other part of the body. It is also affected by a great variety of diseases which are sometimes first noticed in the feet and can lead to diagnosis of that disease e.g. diabetes, circulatory disorders, arthritic diseases, tumours etc.The foot does many things; it acts as a supple shock absorber for the heel when it hits the ground and it acts as a strong lever to push the body forwards from the toes when walking. The foot, combined with other senses, also helps maintain our balance.By the time we are 70, most of us will have walked the equivalent of three times around the worldIf you have a foot problem, you should see

a Chiropodist or Podiatrist. The title Podiatrist is the internationally-recognised name for foot specialist. They do not just treat corns and toe-nails, but are able to diagnose, give advice on, and treat the majority of foot problems including soft tissue injuries, bone deformities, arthritic conditions, ulcerations, infections, gangrene and gait problems (which could cause knee, hip, back, and neck trouble)One of the most important group of patients are those with diabetes as they can develop foot problems which can pose a serious threat to their health e.g. ulceration, infection, gangrene. More
hospital beds are occupied by diabetics as a result of foot-related complications, than as a result of all other complications of diabetes. You do not need a referral from your G.P. to see a private Chiropodist / Podiatrist. For further information, contact The Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists, Registered Office, 1 Fellmonger’s Path, Tower Bridge Road, London’ SE1 3LY, Tel: 020 7234 8620, Fax: 0845 450 3721, www.feetforlife.org

Spring is in the air and hormones are buzzing...cats only come into season between January and November, during the short days of winter they do not breed. Now in March the queens will be calling and the toms will be out every night. Cats can mate successfully from 6 months of age and once a queen has had a litter she will become pregnant again before the first kittens are even weaned. So it is not surprising that the stray cat population can increase very rapidly. At Bilton Veterinary Centre we have stray cats brought in every week by kind members of the public. We scan the cats for microchips and if there is a
chip a happy re-union between owner and pet quickly follows. Stray cats that are not sick or injured and have no microchip, are released where they were found. Sick or injured cats are given emergency treatment which is part funded by the RSPCA. Cats that are not claimed are subsequently re-homed but with increasing numbers of stray cats there is often “no room at the inn”. The Cats Protection League and the RSPCA are in need of more volunteer foster carers, contact either of these organisations for more information. At Bilton we encourage early neutering of cats (from 4 months of age). By doing this, we and pet owners can make
a significant impact on the stray cat population. No-one likes to think of a cat living alone, fending for itself, with no-one to provide care when it is sick or injured but this is what happens when too many kittens are bred. Early neutering also significantly reduces the chance of your cat being involved in a fight or being run over. Remember, a neutered cat is a contented cat, much more inclined to stay at home and be cuddled.Neutering is a straightforward procedure. Cats are admitted in the morning and discharged after lunch. They are all given pain killers and most are racing around again the same day!

A SIMPLE GUIDE TOINVESTING FOR INCOMEIf you are investing for the short term (perhaps up to 5 years) and want to retain access to your money, you should remain in cash. Even though returns are low, the capital will be secure, and that will be important if you don’t want to put any of your money at risk. If you haven’t used your cash ISA allowance for the tax year 2011/12, you can save up to £5,340* and receive tax-free interest. Interest rates available from these products can vary enormously, as can the regularity with which they are paid. You can also use your annual ISA allowance of up to £10,680* for the tax year 2011/2012 (less any investment in a Cash ISA) to invest in alternative assets. If you do not wish to take much of a risk, you could consider fixed-interest funds which normally pays a better rate of interest than cash in return for a higher risk. These funds mean you effectively loan money to a government or company in exchange for a fixed rate of interest over a predetermined period. The initial loan value is then expected to be returned on a specified future date. Bonds issued by stable governments such as the UK government (known as gilts) are regarded as the safest, although the downside is that their low-risk status means they will usually offer a much lower rate of interest than higher-risk bonds. You could also consider corporate bonds, which are slightly riskier but usually generate a higher yield. These mean you lend money to companies in exchange
for an agreed rate of interest and the face value of the bond back in the future. There is, however, no guarantee that the issuing company will keep up with the interest payments or pay the face value on the date of maturity. The likelihood of them honouring their commitments is analysed by specialist ratings agencies on a sliding scale. The most trusted bonds will be awarded AAA status.
If you’re happy to take a slightly higher level of risk, other asset classes you could consider are equity and commercial property. On the equity side, you can buy into companies that are expected to pay a decent income to investors in the form of regular dividends. A more common option is to invest in an equity income fund, whereby you rely on the skills of a specialist fund manager to do the research on your behalf and purchase a portfolio of shares for you. The next area to consider is commercial property. Specialist funds have the capability and financial means to acquire commercial property. The current rental yields paid on the average UK commercial property, as a percentage of the current significantly reduced
