LEARN WITH THE B.E.S.T IN FLORISTRY...After only nine successful months of business, B.E.S.T in Horticulture are expanding their portfolio of courses to include City and Guilds Level 2 and Level 3 diplomas in floristry, leisure Floral Design courses, and a wide range of Certificates of Competence including the popular PA1 and PA6 spraying courses.
The company was started in August 2011 by Tony Davies and Janet Prescott to provide education outside a conventional college environment. Their team of tutors and subject specialists come from a number of Horticultural Colleges and the wider industry. Lisa Henshaw, NDSF (previously a floristry lecturer at Warwickshire College) has recently joined the team enabling B.E.S.T in Horticulture to be able to offer a new floristry provision to its learners. Lisa is passionate and enthusiastic about her subject area and is keen to share her expertise with those wishing to learn. She has taught both City & Guilds level 2 and 3 for a number of years with excellent success rates, and has personally tutored students, through the UK Skills competitions, to achieve 2 National Gold and 3 National Silver winners.
Lisa will be offering Floral design courses at venues across
Warwickshire, Worcestershire and the West Midlands in June and July, and is now recruiting for City & Guilds Level 2 Floristry and City & Guilds Level 3 Floristry, both of which will be commencing in September 2012. Free taster sessions are offered to those who have an interest in studying these qualifications.
B.E.S.T in Horticulture still continues to offer the popular RHS courses at both level 2 and 3, with various methods of study to include distance learning, blended learning and face to face delivery. The RHS Practical qualification at Level 2 are now running as a rolling programme on Saturdays at Ryton Organic Gardens in Coventry, giving learners the advantage of staring the course at any time through the year, and Level 3 starts in September 2012.
B.E.S.T in Horticulture have the advantage of not having to offer courses within the normal restrictions of College timetables and funding rules, which enables us to offer a wider range of opportunities to learners depending on their time commitments and budget.
For more information about any of our courses and Certificate of Competences, visit our Website - www.bestinhorticulture.co.uk or contact us by telephone on either 07544 512 501 (for Horticulture) or 0754 943 1559 (for Floristry and Certificates of Competences.)

Specialists in Domestic& Commercial ElectricalInstallations
In 2005 the Government introduced electrical safety rules into the Building Regulations for England and Wales.Because of this, most fixed electrical installation work carried out in homes, must by law, meet the Building Regulations.Part P states that anyone carrying out electrical installation work in a home must make sure that the work is designed and installed to protect people from fire and electric shocks.Part P applies to newly-built homes and to any changes made to existing installations, including any parts that have been rewired. All electrical installation work in a garden, conservatory or outbuilding must also meet the Building Regulations.Apart from some types of minor work, all electrical work needs to be reported to the Local Authority Building Control, or be carried out by an electrician who is registered by one of the Government-approved scheme providers, such as NICEIC, NAPIT or ELECSA
who will notify LABC direct. All electrical installation work needs to be certified under BS 7671 IET Wiring Regulations, 2008, (Amendment No.1,2011). This is especially important,as not only does it prove an electrical installation has been tested and is safe, solicitors will ask for these documents when selling a property.
By law, all homeowners and landlords must be able to prove that all electrical installation work meets Part P, or they will be committing a criminal offence!
Therefore, the advantages of using a registered electrician are:You will not have to pay high building control charges; The electrician can deal with everything for you;The electrician will arrange for you to receive a certificate that confirms the work conforms with Building Regulations; You have access to a formal complaints procedure; You can choose to take out an insurance-backed warranty when the work is done.In short it is against the law, to undertake electrical installation work in the home, without proper notification to LABC.

Dogs are what we call indiscriminate feeders, most of them will eat most things! I know because I have one, Reggie (labrador cross) likes nothing more than a walk through the cow field. To Reggie this is the equivalent of going to an eat-all-you-like creperie and if he doesn’t fancy eating it….. well he can always roll in it! Whilst these habits are rather offensive to our human sensibilities, they generally aren’t harmful to Reggie who has a stomach of iron. However there are plenty of items around the house and garden that dogs often do swallow, with serious and sometimes life threatening consequences. The canine intestine never ceases to amaze me with its ability to cope with objects that were never intended to be eaten. Socks frequently go in one end and come out the other, sewing needles, items of jewellery, even a metal kebab skewer have passed uneventfully through dogs we have seen at the surgery. Inevitably not everything gets through and when an
object does get stuck in the stomach or intestine, it causes the dog to become very ill, very quickly. Emergency surgery is required to remove the obstruction and save the dog’s life. Stones are the most common foreign body we have to surgically remove, followed by socks (not all make it through) and then children’s toys. Take a look at “Case of the month” on our web site www.biltonvets.co.uk to find out what happened to some underpants! Dogs also have a taste for corn on the cob and as we come into barbecue season please take note …the eaten cobs are just the right shape and size to form a bung in the small intestine. Barbecued spare ribs should never be given to dogs as the sharp bony splinters can cause serious intestinal damage including fatal perforation. Equally, don’t be tempted to give your dog the fat off the steak, he may love you for it at the time but he won’t when he develops pancreatitis. Who would have thought a
barbecue could be so hazardous!!Sometimes foreign bodies sit in the stomach without causing a problem. When my border terrier swallowed a piece of lead, not only did I find the lead but also bits of biro and part of a plastic box! Equally surprising was the labrador who swallowed a ball the postman had thrown for her. At surgery we found not one but two balls in her stomach! Her owners said the second ball had gone missing the previous year.So be warned, there isn’t much that a keen canine won’t consume….unless it’s a tablet from the vet of course!
