And yet, it is so easy to take life and its blessings for granted. If we are not tuned in to the attitude of appreciation, it is easy to miss the joy of the present moment. The poet put it this way: “It was spring, but it was summer I wanted- The warm days and the great outdoors. It was summer, but it was fall I wanted- The colorful leaves, and the cool, dry air. It was fall, but it was winter I wanted- The beautiful snow, and the joy of the holiday season. It was winter, but it was spring I wanted- The warmth, and the blossoming of nature. I was a child, but it was adulthood I wanted- The freedom and the respect. I was twenty, but it was thirty I wanted- To be mature and sophisticated. I was middle-aged, but it was twenty I wanted- The youth and the free spirit. I was retired, but it was middle-age I wanted- The presence of mind without limitations. Suddenly my life was over. My life was done, my life was finished, my life was gone, But somehow I never got what I wanted.” (Jason Lehman, “Present Tense”) Isn’t that a sad commentary? And yet it is an apt description of how many people go through life --- always wishing for something else, always seeing greener grass on the other side of the fence and missing out on life because somehow they lost the attitude of appreciation. A minister tells about asking his mother how her friend was doing. His mom said: “Why, son, she has been trying to die for years. Every time I see her or hear from her, she’ll say, ‘I’m so glad to see you, Linda. But I probably won’t see you next week because things are mighty bad. I don’t know that I’ll be here.’” And then the minister’s mom added, “Son, if that woman ever worked as hard to live as she works to die, it’s amazing to think how she might have enjoyed life!” St. Luke’s family, one of the best ways I know to enjoy life is to live daily in the spirit of appreciation. On page after page, the Bible tells us to be grateful and to cultivate an attitude of appreciation. Faithfully, A Message from our Pastor

The Forward In Faith initiative is in its second year. Several members rolled off the team at the end of the year and new members have joined. We are excited to be working with the Program Ministry Teams (PMT) on the many St. Luke’s ministries and programs. The goal of the Program Ministry Teams is to reinvigorate and interconnect our ministries in service to our diverse community. The four PMT areas are: Worship - led by Lauren Daughtry and Linda Hensley; Education - led by Marcy Mittelstadt; Outreach (Evangelism) - led by Phyllis Gay and Kurt Knotts; and Mission/Service - led by Pat Anderson. Within these teams are smaller groups or individuals who have responsibility for the ministries or activities related to each area.

The leaders met recently to kick off 2018 and discuss ideas for implementing the PMT connection throughout the many ministries and programs of the church. The team leaders will be contacting the leaders in their areas to meet and discuss ideas for evaluating each of the activities and ministries and look for ways to improve, reinvent and connect them with others at St. Luke’s. The PMT leaders hope you will continue to offer your time to the many ministries St. Luke’s has to offer to our congregation and community and offer your ideas and suggestions for improving and interconnecting them. If you are not already involved in one or more of the ministries, but would like to be, please contact one of the leaders named above.

CAN YOU HELP?If you really want to know what goes on during the week at St. Luke’s come be a volunteer at the front

desk. We are a very busy place! There are many happy faces that come in our doors when parents drop off and pick-up children and many phone calls to inquire about our church and our outreach ministries. Due to reductions in staff hours that began in January, we are in desperate need of volunteers to help at the Hospitality Desk during the week. The main responsibility is answering the phones. We have a security person here to help with visitors but they are not available to stay behind the desk to answer phones. The shifts run from 9:00am-12:30pm and 12:30-4:00pm each day Monday-Thursday. You can volunteer for one shift per month or more. Please contact Vickey Hobbs - 452-6262 or [email protected]

LIGHT Night is starting up again! We will begin January 28 and go through April 29, meeting from 5 – 7 PM for 4 yr olds - 5th graders. NOTE: 1-day Schedule Change: Feb. 4 (Superbowl Sunday) - We will meet direct-ly after church for LIGHT Night activities including lunch. Pick up at 2:30 PM. We will NOT be meeting that evening. We are adding TWO NEW components to LIGHT Night this semester:- Bright LIGHTS: Our performance work-shop last semester was such a success and a fun time for the children - we'd like to offer up a time before LIGHT Night for

children to sing and perform with our NEW Music Director. It will begin Feb. 11 and then every Sunday we have LIGHT Night from 4:30PM - 5PM. - Parents group for fellowship and discussion of topics relevant to parenting. Amber Wofford will be facilitating this gathering time. This semester, our 4-year olds - Kindergartners will engage in a fun and creative workshop with crafts, music, stories, and more. We have 2 exciting work-shops for our 1st – 5th graders: art and science 2.0!As a reminder, we’ll begin each Sunday night with dinner, followed by a lively, creative workshop, and conclude with free play. Please register your children to ensure we have food for dinner and the appropriate number of leaders and materials. Register on the website: stlukesumc.org/ministries/children/light-night/ And please, feel free to invite a neighbor or friend.

Souper Bowl of CaringOn Sunday, February 4 our youth group is having a Super Bowl party, but before we have our Party, we will participate in something far more important than a party. It’s the Souper Bowl of Caring. At the end of the service when everyone is leaving, we will be at the doors holding soup pots and we would like everyone to drop in at least $1.00, if not the cost of a meal. That way, we can give the money to help feed people who are hungry and we can all play in the Souper Bowl. All of the money collected will go directly to the hunger ministries here at St. Luke’s to feed people here in our community.Thank you for helping us feed our community!

THANK YOU FROM THE FOOD PANTRYI would like to thank all of our donors and volunteers for your assistance in keeping the pantry going in 2017. We had a very busy year. We served over

3000 families and could not have done it without your support. The Sunday School classes at St. Luke’s donated over $800 to help us provide needed staples to our clients. With your continued support and God’s guidance we will endeavor to serve the disadvantaged in our community for the coming year.Carolyn Galloway

Beginning in March we will move to a once per month printed Epistle. We will continue to have announce-ments in the Sunday bulletin and an emailed newslet-ter that may happen more frequently. The Epistle will be assembled on the 4th Monday of the month so as to have the calendar and events for the next month. This will begin on February 26. Please be aware of this change so that you will have all events in March ready to be publicized by Feb. 26.
