The Objectives of the Society are to perpetuate an interest in the culture of
Scotland and to encourage the study of Scottish History , literature and performing arts.
To engage in fellowship with persons who value and appreciate the history of Scotland.
To celebrate St. Andrew’s Day (Nov 30), Hogmanay (Dec 31), Robert Burns’ Birth-
day (Jan 25), National Tartan Day (Apr 6); and other events that are consistent
with the Society’s objective. To sponsor and, when the Board of Directors deems it
appropriate, provide financial support to affiliated groups who are engaged teaching and
performing the arts and culture of Scotland. This may include but is not limited to
singing, dancing, piping, drumming, reciting poetry and speaking Gaelic.
Monthly Board Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of the month. Contact
elected as your new President. It is truly an honor and I
will do my very best to uphold the standards that Tom
set forth. I would like to tell you all a little bit about my-
self. My Clan is Clan Macleod of Lewis. I spent twenty
years in the US Navy and have had many occupations
since. I moved to New Mexico in September of 2001. I
am currently working the Albuquerque Bernalillo County
Water Utility Authority.
I see great things ahead for our organization. We are
going to start making the Society’s name more well-
known this year by looking into sponsoring more func-
tions and we will need all of our members to support
these by a show of force so to speak. I look forward to
serving you as your President and hope that I see as
many of you as possible at the Celtic Festival, so please
come and bring all the family.
Sincerely Your President,
Bruce Green

Maya Spencer, 17, beloved daughter, of Alan and Barbar Spen-
cer, passed away on March 21, 2015 after a terrible accident on
the Sandia Crest. She entered this world on February 23, 1998
in Albuquerque. She loved horses, dogs, and just about any
other animal she came in contact with. Music was her passion
and she followed several local and regional bands. Maya never
met a stranger, and she adored her friends. Her bright smile and
cheery disposition were infectious. - Albuquerque Journal
Those interested in donat-
ing can go to fundrazr.com,
and search for “Maya
Funeral”.
This closes on April 7th, so
if you’ve been meaning to
help, then now is the time.
Alan has posted on his
Facebook account, saying
that the family will donate
any extra money to a Maya
approved charity.

National Tartan Day: April 6
Americans of Scottish descent have played a vibrant and influential role in the development of this country. However not until 1997
was this influence recognized by a single-year U.S. Senate Resolution that appeared in the Congressional Record of April 7, 1997. In
1998, National Tartan Day of April 6 was officially recognized on a permanent basis when the U.S. Senate passed Senate Resolution
155 recognizing April 6th as National Tartan Day. This was followed by companion bill House Resolution 41 which was passed by the
U.S. House of Representatives on March 9, 2005. The passage of this bill was due to the work of the National Capital Tartan Commit-
tee, Inc. and president James Morrison.
The date of April 6 commemorates the signing of the Declaration of Arbroath in 1320, which asserted Scotland's sovereignty over
English territorial claims, and which was an influence on the American Declaration of Independence. Canada has been celebrating
"National Tartan Day" since 1993. The idea and motivation for creating a similar American holiday was provided by the Scottish Coali-
tion, a group of national Scottish-American cultural organizations. Scotland has established it's Tartan Day on April 6th, 2004 and has
since joined other regional councils in attempting to develop its potential as a global celebration.
There is another Tartan Day, called International Tartan Day, celebrated in Australia and New Zealand on July 1st, the anniversary
of the Repeal Proclamation of 1782 annulling the Act of Proscription of 1747, which had made wearing tartan an offense punishable
with up to seven years transportation.
Due to the Easter Holiday being on April the 5th, we will celebrate on the following Sunday, April the 12th, at the German American
Club, see the calendar or the website (SASSNM.org) for more details.
In the end, no matter what day you decide to celebrate, be proud of your ancestors and your heritage. Source: Wikipedia
Origins As Saint Andrew is the patron saint of Scotland the surname Anderson, which means Son of Andrew is found com-mon over most of the country. The Scottish Gaelic derivation of the name is Gilleaindreas which means Macandrew. The Scottish historian, Ian Grimble, states that although arms were granted to an Anderson of that Ilk in the sixteenth century, as the name is so widespread no exact place of origin can be established.
16th and 17th centuries The historian George Fraser Black lists Andersons as being burgesses of Peebles as well as in the county of Dum-fries. In 1585 John Anderson was a commissioner to Parliament for Cupar. Alexander Anderson was a famous mathema-tician who was born near Aberdeen and later settled in Paris, where he published works on Algebra and Geometry. Alex-ander's kinsman, David Anderson of Finshaugh, also a scientist, is renowned for removing a rock that was obstructing the entrance to Aberdeen harbour with the application of science and mechanics.
19th and 20th centuries In 1863 William Anderson published his famous biographical history of the people of Scotland, The Scottish Nation, in three volumes. In this book he praised the above-mentioned rock remover, David Anderson, stating that he had been rich enough and generous enough to found and endow a hospital in Aberdeen for the maintenance and education of ten poor orphans. In the 20th century the name is remembered for the famous Anderson shelters, a type of bomb shelter that was designed by John Anderson, 1st Viscount Waverley, during World War II.
Anderson Clan Society The Anderson Clan Society was formed in 1973 and is active throughout the world. A clan room and archival display are maintained at Wisby House in Kirtlebridge, Dumfriesshire
Cadet branches There is currently no chiefly line of the Clan Anderson, however the major cadet branches have been identified as Anderson of Dowhill, Anderson of West Ardbreck and Anderson of Candacraig.
Highland MacAndrews and Andersons In the Scottish Highlands the surname MacAndrew is considered a sept of the Clan Mackintosh or Chattan Confeder-ation and MacAndrews were also associated with the Clan MacDonell of Glengarry. The surnames Andrew, Andrews and Anderson are also considered septs of the Highland Clan Ross.
