Hello New York District!
I am Holy Cheong and I will be serving as your
2012-2013 District Bulletin Editor. A main part of
my job is to create a newsletter that is informative
and appealing to my readers. This is the first
seasonal issue of The Empire Key. On the cover of
this issue, I included group pictures of different
divisions. This was one of my ideas to make the newsletter more relevant
because after all, this is for you guys.
In this first issue, you will find important information that all clubs must know. I
hope to communicate with members through my newsletters as well as
publicize the achievements of the mighty New York district. With that said,
After interviews and talks, here are the 2012-2013 committee representatives

Toddler Olympics
Bayside High School Key Club and Queens College Circle K in New York raised over $350 and increased awareness for the Eliminate Project by hosting the first ever Toddler Olympics on May 6th, 2012. Children from ages 2 to 6 could run through various obstacle courses (with the mother's help) or go to the activities table & get tattoos, coloring pages, or pictures with Bayside's mascot. Following the obstacle courses, families went to the auditorium for an award ceremony and an Eliminate Project presentation. SLP subcommittee members Erika Lim, Key Club International, and Rickie Santer, Circle K International, spoke about Kiwanis' worldwide campaign to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus by 2015 and showed two clips about the project. Then, every participant was given a medal and a goodie bag, which not only included treats but an Eliminate Pocket Guide! The purpose of this event wasn't just to fundraise money for the Eliminate Project but to raise awareness to the community and bring mothers and children one step closer while having fun at the same time!

Memorial Day Parade
Baldwin Key Club was invited to accompany the Memorial Day parade to distribute flags and programs. We met at 8:30 AM wearing Key Club shirts, ready for action. Next, we crossed the street en masse to find the flags. Each of the elementary school principals had flags; we were to use the extra. We tracked down each of the principals and introduced ourselves while picking up other Key Clubbers along the way. At 9:35 AM, I began a final run down of each of the schools. The parade was scheduled to begin at ten, so I wanted to obtain all of the flags and bring them across the street to Kiwanis because we planned to march and distribute simultaneously.
Just as we got our first box of flags, I received a call from the other side of the street. The parade was starting fifteen minutes ahead of schedule. We adjusted our hand positions on the flags, got ready, and took off at a dead run. On the other side, we met up with our Kiwanis, other Key Clubbers and a member from Circle K. We quickly loaded the trunk with programs and flags, falling into step behind the car. We walked along the route behind the car, giving out flags and programs to everyone. When we ran out, we took more out of the trunk, and when those ran out, we marched all in a row down to the end of the route. With no rain, it was a great experience.

March of Dimes
Edward R. Murrow’s key club attended the March of Dimes walk in Manhattan. We met up at the Coney Island train station and took the train as a group to the starting point of the walk. The walk took two and a half hours to complete but time flew by because we had such a good time meeting other people from other schools. During the walk, we proudly displayed our new banner made by fellow key clubbers. When we reached the finish line we felt a refreshing feeling of success. We had made a differ-ence. We saw other key clubs at the finish line and this gave me a strong sense of pride as a key clubber.

Puppetry Arts Festival The Puppetry Arts Festival was a recurring festival to raise money for the organization to continue. It was held on June 2, 2012 in Park Slope, Brooklyn. This event included activities such as puppet shows and sing-alongs. Each activity costed $2 and all the money was donated to fu-ture performers and programs that will keep the organization going. In this event, the lack of volunteers gave us a variety of jobs. One station was the cookie decorating station; the sugar cookies were donated by a kind bakery nearby. We made cool designs with vanilla/chocolate frosting on the cookies. The children then decorated them by using can-dies such as jelly beans and gummy bears. Their prize was to enjoy the treat they had made. Even Darth Vader and his crew came to support this event and played a game of golf! At the Bounce House, many children jumped in there and had so much fun that they didn’t want to come out. At the end of the day, the volunteers had to have some fun as well... so we bounced in the bounce house for five minutes. A lot of the food was left over. Large bags of popcorn were left over and Tim jokingly said “Bring it to the movies tonight”. As tempting as the offer sounded, we didn’t take it but settled with the cookies we made. At the end of this long and sunny day, we had to clean up. It was quite a workout to lift all the tables, chairs, and closing the tents. Helen Ho from my club said, “It was crazy fun, but I almost died from the heat.” Nabil Faizullah also commented, “This festival took me by surprise. I never realized how much fun it would be. Even though I was exhausted in the end, it was an enriching experience!” Despite the dreary, wet morning to the extremely hot weather in the after-noon where we all tanned, it was a pleasant event to see all the children smile as they walked the streets of the festival.

Governor’s Project
Hello Mighty New York District,
Each year, the District Governor designates what is known as the Governor’s
Project, an area or category of service outreach that he or she chooses to focus on
for the service year. This year’s Governor’s Project is called “Keys to Accessibility,”
which aims to help the elderly and those with disabilities, two extremely important
components of our society. The goal for this year’s Governor’s Project is 5,000 service
hours and what better than to be able to celebrate this achievement than at the 65th
Annual Leadership Training Conference in 2013. Work hard and be creative, but most
importantly have fun. I look forward to hearing about your service projects through-
out this year. For more information about “Keys to Accessibility,” please visit the district
