THE ELEMENTS

My dear students, you are the youth of to-day and the future of tomorrow. Zest, the cultural festival of the University provides you with an amazing platform not only to showcase your talent but also helps you to develop your holistic skills such as time management, team work spirit, leadership skills, stress management and further gives a new dimension to your personality with an enriched confidence.

This year theme is PANCHTATTVA which means the essence of life comprising of earth, water, sky, air and fire. The entire Universe is made up of these five elements. These five elements though being diverse in nature, work in harmony to maintain the cycle of life and teach us a lesson of Unity in Diversi-ty.

Similarly, my young friends you all are working in unity with high spirits and I am very sure that with your consistent hard work, bril-liant talent and genuine efforts, ZEST-2K17 will be a mega success.

Wishing you all the very best.

The word for air (vayu) or wind (pavana) is one of the classical elements in Hinduism. The Sanskrit word 'Vata' literally means "blown", 'Vayu' "blower", and Prana "breathing" ( the breath of life). Hence, the pri-mary referent of the word is the "deity of Life", who is sometimes for clarity referred to as "Mukhya-Vayu" (the chief Vayu) or "Mukhya Prana" (the chief of Life). Air is always around us, though we have never seen it but always felt its presence. Air can be felt when the leaves of the trees rustle and the clothes hanging on the cloth wires swag. The pages of a book start fluttering when the fan in the room is switched on. The wind makes the kite fly.

Imagine not being able to hear a screaming jet engine a foot away from your ear. That’s what would happen if air did not exist. People can hear sound only because air car-ries sound waves from one point to another. Eliminate air, and nobody will ever hear sounds that move between loca-tions. Because air molecules cause violet and blue wave-

lengths of sunlight to scatter, the sky appears blue. With no air, the sky would always be black. You can also thank air for rain, snow and tornadoes, because air helps create weather. Storms, for example, often occur when a cold air mass collides with a warm air mass. An air mass is a body of air that acquires the temperature of the area over which it resides.

Air is constantly in motion, even when you can't see it. This is the same for the mind of a person with the Air element. Of the four ele-ments, Air is the most concentrated on thought. You think through every decision thoroughly and often find clever solutions to difficult problems. You are studious and scholarly and often see "the big pic-ture" when others cannot. However, as changeable as the direction of the wind, Air people can also vary quite drastically. While some are outgoing, rational and clever, others are scattered, eccentric, and cold. You excel at multi-tasking, however, be careful as you are also easily distracted. You have the ability to multi-task but you are strongest when focused on one problem at a time.

Air is also what gives humans the ability for speech. Because of this you are witty and entertaining and are a welcomed guest at any party. Be aware that while you have charm, you sometimes lack social graces. Your focus is placed so often on logic, that you often overlook feelings. Commitment doesn't come naturally to you. Couple this with your sometimes insensitive nature and it makes relationships very difficult. You are not rooted in tradition. You go with what makes sense and don't believe in doing something because "it's how it has always been done."

Zest is a youth festival of our esteemed university cele-

brated with a huge enthusiasm and passion. We cele-

brate this fest with many different themes and this year

we have a wonderful theme “PANCHATATTVA”. I per-

sonally loved this theme and feel strongly behind the

meaning which inculcates a strength of bonding among

each other. We stand united and this quality is endear-

ing. We can learn lot from this :

From facilitating and enhancing networking skills to

helping students get better at man-management and

speaking skills , this season of college fests provide stu-

dents, a great learning curve, amassing things they’d label as ‘wonderful memo-

ries’ after they graduate. The learning that happens at a fest, be it the experience

of being a team player, is no match to a classroom atmosphere. It builds the feel-

ing that you’re part of the college. You’ll find yourself in moments like these,

your interests, culture, fine arts or even literature.

Human being is Gods wonderful creation. To provide peace and pros-perity God has created nature. Panchatattva is a beautiful Sanskrit word that means five elements .The entire universe is created by these five elements. These are: Akash (Sky or Space), Vayu (Air), Jal (Water), Agni (Fire) and Prithvi (Earth). When panchatattva are in balance then it provides happiness, success, prosperity, peace etc. The five elements are associated with the five senses, and act as the gross medium for the experience of sensations. The basest ele-ment, earth, created using all the other elements, can be perceived by all five senses – (i) hearing, (ii) touch, (iii) sight, (iv) taste , and (v) smell. The next higher element, water, has no odour but can be

heard, felt, seen and tasted. Next comes fire, which can be heard, felt and seen. Air can be heard and felt. I Srishti kaul would like to thanks Latha ma’am and lingaya’s as a whole for giving me such a huge opportunity to be the head of con-trolz. This opportunity comes with a great responsibility, I am hon-

oured to fulfil this. As a head, I need to supervise all the activities going on in different committee. These activities include checking various progress report of performing committees

For me as the head of the organising committee aka controlz , it is my due responsibility to explain the theme of our fest :

PANCHATATTVA Or Five Elements. Our whole cosmic quest of the world and beyond starts from the point of panchatattva (five elements) which then manifests in an en-joining manner to form the life force and then, later, those five elements disintegrates to ensure a celestical traverse at the Paramount (atom) level.

Earth (Prithvi): One can touch earth and smell it too ! Howev-er, there are two types of earth one is Eternal or (nitya) which are in the form of atom (Paramanu).

Water or Jal: is the second element which again has two charac-ters as in the Earth i.e. eternal in the shape of atom and Karya (Work) be it as river, pond or seas are perishable.

Air or Vayu: Again it has two levels as earth and water i.e. eternal atom and perisha-ble Karya. One can feel air, as we breathe in or out.

This really applies to our college as students from contrasting backgrounds are here in

our college .They all work together to make this event a grand one .This gives a great

message for the community as a whole which is much needed in this world.

You all must be aware of Panchtattva. The word 'panchatattva' originates from Sanskrit, where "panch" stands for five and "tatva" indicates elements. Following the universal law of life, every thing on this planet is composed of five basic elements or the "panchamahabhutas". These are : Akash (Sky or Space), Va-yu (Air), Jal (Water), Agni (Fire) and Prithvi (Earth). If we relate them to life The Earth: Solid as it is - houses the soil, landscape, flora and fauna. With its tremendous magnetic fields and gravitational force, it keeps every living and non-living thing grounded to the earth. Water: Water is the source of life - and it flows within all of us. 70% of the earth is water and the same goes for the human body. Fire is the source of energy and light. Light is important for mak-ing the beauty of the world visible to all of us - in all its radiant colors. Air, which can also be linked to space and atmosphere is a powerful life source that is important to sustain life.

AIR ( Vayu )

The Third Element of Five Elements is “AIR” which represents “Thinking” in terms of Astrology.

The Atmosphere of the Earth is about 400 kms deep, and con-sists of 21% Oxygen ( prana or vayu ),

78% Nitrogen, Carbon-dioxide, helium, other kind of gases, dust particles, humidity and vapour, in certain proportions. The correct percentage of different gases, Atmospheric pres-sure and humidity levels is important for life forms on Earth.

The life of Human beings, animals and plants depends upon this .the air is vital for survival. Our sense of sound, touch and feel are related to air. Air represents a cheerful, amiable, gen-tle, neat,

If balance of air is disturbed, it effects the Lungs, Kidneys, and blood disorders. Hippocrate, the Father of Medicine, in whose name the Oath is taken, said that never touch a part of the body with iron whose controlling sign is being aspected by the Moon. When moon is in Taurus and if you carry out the tonsils operation, it amounts to introducing the air element and stemming the rising of the water element

Importance of air in our life is so and it is the prime cause of life on Earth. Without it life would not be possible as seen on other planets in our Solar system. Hence air is a natural virtue on earth which sustains life. Air must be monitored in order to control and lower pollution levels, control smoke caused by wildland fires, and to monitor air quality. The Forest Service monitors the effects of air pollution that may impair visibility, harm human health, injure trees and other plants, acidify or cause unnatural fertilization of streams and lakes, leach nutri-ents from soils, and degrade cultural resources, like archeo-

logical sites and historical buildings. Then, as human popula-tion and land use for agriculture increased worldwide over the centuries, atmospheric methane slowly climbed. Between 100

B.C. and A.D. 1600, methane emissions rose by nearly 31 million tons per year. Ac-cording to the most recent data, the United States alone generates some 36 million tons of methane per year. “The ice core data show that as far back as the time of the Roman Empire, human [activities] emitted enough methane gas to have had an im-pact on the methane signature of the entire atmosphere,”

Air, mixture of gases comprising the Earth’s atmosphere. The mixture contains a group of gases of nearly constant concentra-tions and a group with concentrations that are variable in both space and time.

The uniformity of composition is maintained by mixing associat-ed with atmospheric motions; but, above a height of about 90 km (55 miles), diffusional processes become more important than mixing, and the lighter gases (hydrogen and helium, in particu-lar) are more abundant above that level.

Of the gases present in variable concentrations, water vapor, ozone, carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide are of principal importance. Although present in relatively small amounts, these variable constituents may be very important for

maintaining life on Earth’s surface. Water vapor is the source for all forms of precipitation and is an important absorber and emit-ter of infrared radiation. Carbon dioxide, besides being involved

in the process of photosynthesis, is also an important absorber and emitter of infrared radiation. Ozone, which is present mainly in the atmospheric region 10 to 50 km (6 to 30 miles) above the Earth’s surface, is an effective absorber of ultraviolet radiation from the Sun and effectively shields the Earth from all radiation of wavelengths less than 3,000 angstroms.
