The Eagle
March 2018
St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church 3220 Columbus St., Grove
City, Ohio
614/875-2314 www.stjohnsgc.org
Save the date! Mark your calendars! Invite your neighbors and
friends!
Saturday March 24 at 6pm
Sunday March 25 at 8:15 and 11am
We are doing something very special for Palm Sunday (and
Saturday) services this year. You
will experience the Passion Drama of Holy Week as you have never
experienced it before!
On March 24 and 25 we will be experiencing Walt Wangerin’s “The
Cry of the Whole Congre-
gation”. This is a blend of traditional hymns and narrative
reading of the Gospel story. There
will be congregational responses that will draw you into the
drama unfolding through the read-
ings and actions of the Biblical characters. We will celebrate
Holy Communion at the point in
the story where Jesus is in the upper room with His disciples.
You will be the crowd at the tri-
al of Jesus and witnesses at His crucifixion.
You may have watched Passion Dramas in the past, but this
service will bring you into the sto-
ry as we worship God and hear again the Good News of Christ’s
sacrifice for our sins. This
service will touch your heart!
What an odd year! We had Ash Wednesday on Valentine’s Day.
Easter is on April Fool’s
Day. Both the Winter Olympics and March Madness are during
Lent.

From the Parish Nurse
WHAT IS ADDICTION?
Addiction is a chronic, relapsing brain disease that is
char-acterized by compulsive drug seeking and use, despite harmful
consequences. Drugs change the brain. These changes can be long
lasting, and can lead to the harmful behaviors seen in people.
Opiate addiction is one of the most common problems we see
today.
Opiates are drugs that slow down the activity of the nervous
system, which decreases pain and effects breathing. Com-mon opiates
include heroin, oxycodon (Percocet, Percodan,
OcyContin), hydrocodone (cicodin, Lortab, Norco), fentanyl,
hydromorphine (Dilaudid), buprenorphine (Subutex, Suboxone).
codeine, methadone, morphine, and tramadol (Ultram).
Prescription Drug abuse is the use of medication without a
prescription, in a way other than as pre-scribed. or for the
feelings of getting high. It is important to keep all prescription
medication in a secure location out of reach of children. Parents,
teachers, friends and coaches should not provide prescription drugs
to those without the written prescription of their doctor!
Signs of abuse include: slowed breathing rate; red or glazed
eyes; irritability; lack of interest in hob-bies/activities;
withdrawing from family; change in school work; missing medicines;
constipation; drowsi-ness; poor coordination; stealing; forging or
selling prescriptions; excessive mood swings or hostility; poor
decision-making; appearing to be high; unusually energetic or
revved up; or sedated; continually "losing" prescriptions; so more
prescriptions must be written; seeking prescriptions from more than
one doctor.
When responding to an overdose, try to wake the person up by
yelling their name and rubbing the middle of their chest with your
knuckles. Call 911 and explain that the person has stopped or is
struggling to breath. Make sure nothing is in the person's mouth
that can block their breathing. If breathing has stopped or is very
slow begin rescue breathing. If possible, administer Narcan.
If you or a loved one are experiencing a mental health or
substance abuse related emergency call the Netcare Access Crisis
Hotline: 614-276-2273 or Opiate Crisis Line: 614-724-4673.
Acts 20:35 In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind
of hard work we must help the weak, re-membering the words the Lord
Jesus himself said: It is more blessed to give than to receive.
May you feel God by your side in all you encounter. Your Parish
Nurse Kim Easterday RN BSN CHPN

This year, God told me I should go on the Mexico Mission Trip
with
St. John’s. During the tr ip, we were paired with niños; I had
two.
Gabriel and Alberto were now my best friends to show God’s love
to.
During the week, we played games, went on field trips, and had
VBS. We
three had a lot of fun and learned a lot more about God. This
experience
was a significant spiritual awakening with my relationship with
Jesus. God
used me to show the love of Jesus to my niños from Tijuana.
Spending individual time with them allowed them to
open up with me and I could see that they were very passionate
about loving and serving God.
I had a lot of fear going on this trip because I wasn’t used to
going on a mission trip whose sole purpose was to serve
children. Those I had attended in the past had involved
construction only. Nevertheless, God showed me a verse to
help me on this mission trip: “For God has not given us a spirit
of fear, but of love, power, and a sound mind.” II
Timothy 1:7. This verse reminded me that God does not want us to
have fear , but He wants us to do the oppo-
site and obey even when it is uncomfortable. The most meaningful
event I experienced with my niños was a concert.
They were praising God and enjoying His presence. I knew then
and there that that was why God wanted me on this
trip; to love and guide my niños closer to God and each other.
In conclusion, God will continue to lead me to serve
others before myself and will equip me with patience for dealing
with the changes that take place in life.
¡Gloria a Dios!
Brandon Rogers
Heading into the Mexico Mission this year, I felt unsure and
ill-prepared. While I had had an amazing exper i-
ence the previous year, I had become tired and overwhelmed by
the many obstacles and anxieties life had thrown at
me over the course of the year. I was in desperate need of some
spiritual renewal.
From the moment the children stepped out of their van, however,
everything changed. I was blessed to be
paired up with a 12 year old girl named Anna, who was smart,
tenacious, and, above all else, unafraid to confront her
fears and try new things, all in the name of the Lord. And what
struck me most from the beginning was just how sim-
ilar we are. One moment that stands out happened the first day:
after finishing up a game, we were walking back to
the dining tent to meet up with our group. Anna saw a nearby
soccer ball and ran to it, passing it back and forth to
me. We got a little over exuberant, however, and sent the ball
flying, straight at the head of one of the Rancho Gene-
sis Staff. Immediately, both our reactions were to turn around
and walk away, pretending like nothing happened.
When we turned to each other and realized what we had just done,
we both burst out laughing.
Flash forward through a week of songs, games, and
relationship-building, to our last campfire Friday night; the
night
where we have a chance, via an interpreter, to speak one on one
with our niños, sharing with them our goodbyes, as
well as the ways we had seen God working with them over the
week. Even before the campfire began, both Anna and
I were crying. When it was our turn to talk, I shared with her
all the thigs I had noticed about her over the course of
the week – how smart and driven she was, especially when it came
to learning English. How willing she was to face
her fears and to challenge herself. And, above all, how
wonderful her heart for serving others was. When it was
Anna’s turn, she just said how much it meant that I got her,
understanding and appreciating her for the amazing
person that she is. In all this, I was blown away by the way God
overcomes. No matter the age or cultural differ-
ences, no matter our backgrounds or nationalities, God’s love
transcends it all, building a new family in Christ.
That, without a doubt, is one of the greatest lessons one can
learn.
Galatians 3:28 “There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave
nor free, nor is there male or female, for you are all
one in Christ Jesus.”
¡Gloria a Dios!

Song of Easter
Sing a song of Easter,
Of life worth living,
Sing praises to our Lord
For all he is giving;
For the Easter of hope
And renewal of the earth,
For the miracle of seedtime
And the promise of our rebirth.
Ada Weygandt
It’s Spring! God’s sun warming the earth,
Winging birdsong in a sky serenade,
Blooming forsythia and bedding tree,
For such was this day made,
It’s Spring!
For each morning anew,
Each petal shimmering with dew,
For each sweet bouquet of love
Wafted from the heart of God above;
For such was this day made,
It’s Spring! Ada Weygandt

in Rooms 103 & 104 from 9:00am-11:00am. Everyone is welcome.

NEW ADULT MISSION OPPORTUNITY. Rachel Katterhenrich has
contacted us about sending a team of 8-10 people to Tanzania to
assist with their an-nual missionary conference. The team would
lead a VBS for 50-60 missionary children and provide some child
care during other times of the week. We would also need one or two
people to lead singing during the worship times. The conference is
June 28-July 4, 2018. There will be an option of a side trip before
or after the conference. The estimated cost is $3,000 a person. If
you have an interest or questions please contact Pastor Allman.
Blankets of Love Warming Hearts!
Thanks to all who prayed over, paid for, prepared and/or tied
the 50, (YES 50!) blankets that will be included with every bed
delivered in the month of February by the Bed Brigade. The first
happy recipients are shown in the photo at right. Thank you so very
much for helping us warm the beds, souls, and hearts of those in
the Columbus area during this cold winter season. Warmly, Lauren

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE DURING LENT!
During Lent we will be asking for donations of care
kit supplies as well as monetary donations for Sole
Hope.
Each kit requires a $2.00 donation to help defray
the costs of the additional supplies that Sole Hope
furnishes.
Checks can be made out to “St. John’s Lutheran”.
Please note in the memo “Sole Hope”.
For the care kits we are collecting: band-aids (assorted sizes),
mid-size safety pins,
alcohol wipes, small tubes of antibiotic ointment, sealable
sandwich baggies and
quart size baggies, and sticker sheets.
Throughout Lent, there will be a display board in the north
entrance and link area
that you can visit to see what items are most needed. Thank
you!
Sole Hope is an organization which helps children and adults in
Uganda rid themselves of
“jiggers” (not “Chiggers” as we know them), which embed
themselves in their feet and can cause
inflammation, ulceration, gangrene and even amputation. The
jiggers are a small sand flea found
in Sub-Saharan climates. The female once inside the foot lays
eggs which continue to multiply.
These wounds are very painful and cause difficulties for victims
in daily activities, such as walk-
ing, playing and going to school.
Sole Hope has set up clinics throughout Uganda to treat and
educate the people there. Once at
the clinic, feet are washed and jiggers removed with safety pins
or in worst cases razor blades.
The wounds are then bandaged and each person is given a new pair
of shoes and educated on
how to care for their feet, as well as receiving a care kit
which includes safety pins, antibiotic
ointment band aids, and alcohol wipes. Currently they have
enough shoe material but are in need
of these kits.
You may go on the internet on YouTube and search “Sole
Hope”. There are videos there showing how these people are
getting care. It is a must see, that will tug at your heart.
We
pray you will help to make this a successful ministry.
For more information contact Linda Diehl at 614-906-1408 or
talk to Luci Evans at youth group.

BEACONS AND QUILTERS NEWS
Now is the time to come and check out the Beacons and
Quilters. Hopefully, the March weather will be mild. You
can visit for just an hour and then go on your way. If you
can visit longer, bring your lunch and stay for a couple of
hours. A visit is not a commitment. We do stamps and
cards any Tuesday, not just the third Tuesday.
The spring meeting of the LSS Auxiliaries will be Saturday,
March 17, 2018 at 11:30AM-
1:30PM here at St. John’s. The 13 LSS auxiliaries will prepare
75 newborn diaper bags. These
bags will be given to mothers who use the food pantries and who
request the bags. We need any
kind of newborn clothing; diapers; such as Aldi’s size N and
size 1; bottles; formula; rattles;
bathing products; towels; washcloths; anything you feel will
help a new mother the first few
weeks after giving birth. There are two LSS meetings in a year.
The next LSS meeting will be
in September. Please join us.
The Beacons were blessed with 24 double-fleece, fringe-tied lap
blankets from a Centerville
Lutheran church. The Beacons gave the lap blankets to the
Furniture Bank for families moving
into apartments. The lap blankets did not meet the Bed Brigade
size requirements.
This year, the Beacons will be donating men’s and women’s used
clothing to Astoria Place
Nursing Home on Souder Avenue near Mt. Carmel West Hospital.
Other used clothing will be
donated to the Methodist Free Store on Parsons and to Volunteers
of America on Stringtown
Road. Household items will be given to the Furniture Bank on
Yale Avenue in Columbus. Faith
Mission is limiting their acceptance of donations because of
storage problems. If anyone
knows of a Grove City group who would like such donations on a
continuing basis, please leave
a message with the church.
The Quilters meet every Tuesday from 9am to 2pm in rooms
103-104. The Beacons meet
with the Quilters on the third Tuesday to sort and bag clothes,
cut and sort labels and stamps,
help with projects and attend the monthly meeting. Bring a sack
lunch. All materials are pro-
vided. At the Beacons’ meeting, we take offerings for the food
pantries and for the Beacons’
general fund.
“If a man shuts his ears to the cry of the poor, he too will cry
out and not be answered .”

OWLS UPCOMING EVENT – MARCH 16TH
Kids! Grandkids! One of life’s greatest experiences is watching
our children grow up and
choose a vocation that makes them happy, fulfilled adults. The
only thing better is watching
our grandchildren repeat the process. South-Western City Schools
(SWCS) has been there for
our children and grandchildren since they entered the
kindergarten room.
Today the school district covers 119 square miles including
rural, suburban and urban settings.
It is one of the most unique public school districts in the
state. Over 22,000 students call
SWCS home and the district has over 2,600 employees.
Like everything around us, our schools have changed
tremendously. Here are a couple of inter-
esting facts: Today there are 78 language dialects in our
district. 52.9% of the students qualify
for the free lunch program. 6.7% qualify for the reduced lunch
program. We have brand new
buildings and more to come hopefully.
Please join us March 16th to hear more news about our schools
from Dr. Bill Wise, super-
intendent of the district.
We will enjoy a potluck before our speaker. Bring your favorite
covered dish to share.
Fried chicken will be provided. Our meeting starts at 11:30 am
so please plan to arrive
by 11:15 am. Use the salmon insert in the church bulletin to
sign up or call the office to
make your reservation. If you sign up and your plans change,
please call the church of-
fice to cancel.
CALLING ALL OWLS! INVITATION TO JOIN THE OWLS
Have you retired recently? Are you looking for a club, group,
etc. to get involved in to
share your love of God? The Older Wiser Lutheran Seniors at St.
John’s would like to
invite all members to join the fun and share the Christian
fellowship at our monthly meet-
ings. An OWL might be a little older in age but we are very
young at heart. There isn’t an
age requirement but you must be old enough to enjoy the
friendship and fellowship of oth-
ers from St. John’s. We are a very active group that meets the
third Friday of every
month for either a potluck lunch at the church or an outing to
visit different interests
around the area.
