Aceasta înseamnă că o parte substanţială a valorilor noastre culturale îşi au rădăcina în tradiţiile metalurgice, spaţiu ce trebuie redescoperit, cercetat şi clarificat. hough metallurgy is approached today as no more than a technical domain, it had a central cultural importance in the past. This point is illustrated here by the deep metallurgical background of the cult of YHWH, the god of the Bible. This is reflected by the outstanding status of the smiths in Ancient Israel, by the central importance of metallurgy in the Biblical myths of origin, by the symbolism of the Jerusalem temple, by the strong metallurgical affinities of YHWH, revealed by his volcanic theophany, his residence in mining areas and his celestial domain envisioned as a giant furnace. These features reveal that the Israelite religion emerged as the extension to an entire people of beliefs previously belonging to the Canaanite metalworkers. This means that a substantial part of our cultural values are rooted in metallurgical traditions that remain to be rediscovered, investigated and clarified. Keywords: pre-Israelite cult of YHWH, smelting god, metallurgical beliefs, Bronze Age religion, Jerusalem temple 1. INTRODUCERE 1. Today, technology is no more than an ensemble of processes which are reliable, efficient and powerful. In such a context, technology is thus in no way assumed to interfere with our beliefs, ethics and universe of values. For this reason, ancient techniques are hardly expected to be a significant source of spirituality. However, this reduction of technology to the art of domestication of matter is recent. It is a consequence of the revolution promoted by modernity, in which the universe became reduced to an inert matter blindly obeying scientific laws. It cannot be used to evaluate the cultural importance, in pre-modern time, of techniques in general and metallurgy in particular. D

DIMENSIUNEA CULTURALĂ
A METALURGIEI:
CAZUL VECHIULUI ISRAEL
THE CULTURAL DIMENSION
OF METALLURGY:
THE CASE OF ANCIENT ISRAEL

Această importanţă culturală este documentată clar de
istoricii religiilor.
Memphis,
prima capitală regală a Egiptului Antic, era patronată
primului rege Caeculus şi căruia i s-a dedicat primul
dezlegarea misterelor. Prin urmare se poate
evidenţia rolul metalurgului în ceremonia de
This cultural importance is clearly acknowledged by
historians of religions. Mircea Eliade, for example,
claimed that ... "Not only did the manipulation of
metals contribute considerably to man's conquest of
the material world; it also opened for him a new
mythological and religious universe".10
This opinion
is confirmed by an overview of Bronze Age cultures
from the Ancient Near East and Europe and Asia, all
devoting to the smith an outstanding status.
According to Kristianssen and Larsson, in the Bronze
Age civilizations, "Smiths often enjoy a privileged
position linked to the role of the smith as a Culture
Hero, and the Heavenly smith is the son, messenger
and collaborator of the Supreme god or creator god,
and helps him to complete his work".11
These considerations find confirmation in the central
importance of the smith-god in the past. Memphis, the
first king's city of Ancient Egypt, was patronized from
its origin (about 3000 BCE) by Ptah, the Egyptian
smith-god. The same situation is encountered in
Mesopotamia, where the city of Eridu (whose name
probably comes from urud = copper), the earliest
prestigious city of the Mesopotamian civilization, was
patronized from its origin by Enki, the crafty god
specifically related to metallurgy. Later, the city of
Tyre, the heart of a maritime empire extending over
the whole Mediterranean coast, was also patronized
by Melqart, the smith god.12
Hephaestus, the divine
smith, was the patron of Athens, together with his
female counterpart Athena, the wise goddess of
arts and crafts. Even Rome was founded under the
auspices of the smith-god Volcanus, the "father" of the
first king, Caeculus, and the first god to be officially
worshipped in the city.13
The cultural importance of metallurgy did not
disappear after Antiquity. In Medieval Europe, the
smith was approached as the man able to cooperate
with the creator through his skill.14
This opinion is
even reflected in the Christian medieval exegesis
that approached Joseph, the father of Jesus, as a
blacksmith, then relating him directly to the creator
god.15
Such a belief displays a striking parallel with
those attested about two millennia before in Europe,
where "The Smith-Counsellor continues and
completes the work of God by making man capable
of understanding mysteries. Hence the role of the

privilegiată cu sufletul şi migraţiile acestuia. Vezi Williams, 2012, paginile 46-48. 5 Vezi Helms, 2006, paginile 461-462
Dimensiunea culturală a metalurgiei: cazul vechiului Israel
63
Deşi comparaţia are un
punere scurtă a fundamentelor religiei israelite vechi.
smith in the initiations at puberty and in secret
societies, and his importance in the religious life of
the community".16
Such a cultural importance of metallurgy is also
explicitly expressed in African traditional societies.
Here again, the smith is accounted for by his intimate
relation with the divine universe. This is expressed in
his function of priest, magician, healer, conciliator, as
well as inspired poet and musician.17
This outstanding
status is also reflected by the holiness of his
workshop: "Connected to the notions of fecundity,
life and liberty, [the forge] is the most typical
sanctuary of the African religion, the one which,
after the hearth, possesses the widest extension [...] If
the comparison were not so extreme, we could almost
say that the forge is the church of the African
village".18
This overview reveals that throughout millennia,
metallurgy was regarded in the Ancient World not
only as a craft, but also for its central cultural
dimension.19
This means that many fundaments of our
culture, values and beliefs are probably rooted in
metallurgical traditions, though this reality is totally
ignored today. In this paper, I intend to illustrate this
point by briefly exposing the metallurgical foundations
of the Ancient Israelite religion.
2. STATUTUL DEOSEBIT AL METALUR-
GILOR ÎN VECHIUL ISRAEL
2. THE OUTSTANDING STATUS OF
METALWORKERS IN ANCIENT ISRAEL
In the text evoking the deportation of the Jerusalemites
at the end of the first temple period, it is related that
Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon ... "carried out
thence all the treasures of the house of YHWH, and
the treasures of the king's house, and cut in pieces
all the vessels of gold which Solomon king of Israel
had made in the temple YHWH, as YHWH had said.
And he carried away all Jerusalem, and all the
princes, and all the mighty men of valor, even ten
thousand captives, and all the smiths and

metalworkers; none remained, save the poorest sort
of the people of the land" (2Kgs 24:13-14). The
mention of smiths requires clarification. It may be a
simple anecdote revealing that the smiths from
Jerusalem were sufficiently appreciated for their skill
by the enemies to be taken as captives. Alternately,
their mention together with the elite of the society,
may also reflect their prestigious status in the Ancient
Israelite society. This latter explanation is confirmed
by the following considerations:
Closeness to YHWH: We read in the book of Isaiah
that the god is personally involved in the activity of
the metalworker: "Behold, I have created the smith,
I blow the fire of coals, and I bring forth the tool for
his work" (Isa 54:16). A similar involvement of
YHWH is not mentioned in the Bible for any other
craft. YHWH is no longer evoked to create any other
guild or professional activity. This means that the
metalworkers were regarded in Ancient Israel as
being especially close to the god. This singularity may
explain why the members of the tribe of Qenites, the
Canaanite metalworkers living among the Israelites,
were collectively approached as faithful servants of
YHWH (see Jer 35:18-19, 2Kgs 10:15-16).
Divine inspiration: Bezalel, the craftsman making all
the artifacts of the tabernacle (Exodus 25-30) is
considered as being directly inspired by YHWH:
"YHWH spoke to Moses, saying: See, I have called
by name Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of
the tribe of Judah; and I have filled him with the
spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and
in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship" (Ex. 31:1-3). This claim promotes him to the singular
rank of 'craft-prophet' expressing his divine
inspiration via the artifacts he creates. Bezalel is
apparently not an exception. Exactly the same
situation is encountered later concerning Hiram, the
smith building the Jerusalem temple and making all its
cultic artifacts. It is in no way specified that Hiram
received instructions either from Solomon or from any
prophet of YHWH. We do not know further about a
pre-existing plan for this project. This silence is
especially intriguing when one takes into account the
fact that Hiram originated from Tyre (1Kgs 7:13-14).
This situation reveals that Hiram was considered by
the Israelites as being specifically inspired by YHWH
in the construction of the temple and its artifacts,
independently of his engagement with regards to the
Israelite alliance.
Metallurgic priesthood: Metalworkers were appa-
rently involved in the cult of YHWH. Jethro, the
father-in-law of Moses is a priest belonging to the
tribe of Qenites (metalworkers).21
His attachment to
20
Dimensiunea culturală a metalurgiei: cazul vechiului Israel
65
faptul că lui Moise i s-a relevat adevărata identitate a
YHWH is revealed by the fact that he lived at the
vicinity of the holy mountain (Horeb) where YHWH
revealed himself to Moses (Ex. 3:1). It is confirmed by
his action of blessing YHWH and offering of sacrifices
to him in presence of Aaron, the priest of Israel (Ex.
18:10-12).
Moses "encountered" YHWH for the first time after
years spent in company of Jethro (Exodus 3). It is
specified that Moses discovered there the genuine
identity of YHWH, which was previously hidden to the
Israelites (Ex. 6:3). These details suggest that before
the Exodus and Sinai covenant, the deep knowledge of
YHWH, and his revelation were apparently reserved
for the elite of metalworkers, who were considered to
Metalurgia era un meşteşug foarte apreciat în
Antichitate. Astfel, noi nu credem că un individ
neexperimentat ar fi putut crea sponatan artefacte
metalice complexe.
Qenaz, o ramură a breslei metalurgilor canaaniţi.
be in close relation with YHWH.
Metallurgy was a highly specialized skill in Antiquity.
So that we do not expect that a non-experimented
individual could spontaneously produce complex
metallic artifacts. In Ex. 32:4, it is mentioned that the
artisan preparing the mould and casting the golden
calf (probably through the lost-wax technique) was no
other than Aaron himself. This reveals that Aaron, the
first chief-priest of the Israelites, was also a master
smith.
Smiths as heroes and liberators: Moses, the most
famous hero of the Israelite tradition, also displays
metallurgical skill. This is revealed by YHWH
requesting him to make by himself a copper artifact of
serpent shape (Numb 21:8). It is mentioned that Moses
successfully forged this cultic artifact without delay (v.
9), and without the help of any professional artisan.
So there is no doubt for the author of the book
of Numbers, that Moses was familiar enough with
metallurgy to succeed in this task. Further judges and
liberators of Israel also originated from the meta-
llurgical horizon. For example, Caleb and Othoniel,
two heroes explicitly mentioned as being filled of the
"spirit of YHWH" (Numb 14:24; Judg 3:10), belonged
to the clan of Qenaz, a branch of the Canaanite guild
of metalworkers.
Such an involvement of metalworkers in leadership is
not restricted to the early phase of Israel history, when
kingship was not yet established. Even in the far
future, the leaders to be sent by YHWH to emancipate
the Israelites from oppression are approached as
metalworkers.
This point is explicitly revealed in the book of
Zechariah: "YHWH showed me four smiths. Then
said I: 'What come these to do?' And he spoke,
saying: 'These, the horns which scattered Judah so
that no man did lift up his head, these then are come
to frighten them, to cast down the horns of the
nations, which lifted up their horn against the land
of Judah to scatter it" (Zech 2:3-4).
21
Jethro, the father-in-law of Moses, is specifically called "the Qenite" in Judg 1:16.

The emissary of YHWH as divine smith: A divine
being termed the emissary of YHWH (malak-YHWH)
is frequently mentioned in the Bible. He is so close to
his "patron" that it is not always easy to distinguish
between them in the Biblical text. The identity of this
emissary of YHWH is generally hidden in the Bible,
and it is explicitly mentioned that the Israelites should
not worship him (Judg 13:17-20). However, he reveals
himself in the book of Malachi as a divine smith:
"Behold, I send My Emissary, and he shall clear the
way before Me ... But who may abide the day of his
coming? And who shall stand when he appears? For
he is like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' soap; And
he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; and
he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them a
gold and silver..." (Mal 3:1-3). A comparative
analysis of the other mentions of the emissary of
YHWH confirms that he was truly approached by the
Israelites as a divine smith.23
It is not surprising,
therefore, that his terrestrial counterparts, the metal-
workers, were also regarded as the messengers of
YHWH among the mortals.
All these considerations reveal that the high status of
the smiths in the Ancient Israelite society did not
originate from their nature as artisans, but rather as
a direct consequence of their specific closeness to
YHWH.
This latter, intimately related to their activity,
transformed them into priests, leaders and prophets
among the Israelites.
3. METALURGIA IN TIMPURILE MITICE 3. METALLURGY IN TIME OF ORIGIN
Miturile originare sunt elemente fundamentale ale
culturii.
Myths of origin serve as the most fundamental
elements of a culture. Accordingly, if metallurgy holds
a prestigious and even central status in the Ancient
Israelite culture, we expect to encounter it in the myths
of origin. In the Bible, the 'beginning' of mankind's
history is evoked through two interrelated stories: the
expulsion of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden,
and the birth of Cain. This invites one to look for their
affinities with metallurgy.
The expulsion from the Garden of Eden: The
expulsion from the Garden of Eden is presented in the
book of Genesis as the key event by which the history
started. Such a metamorphosis is provoked by the
discovery of the serpent, a feature stimulating Adam
and Eve to transgress a taboo. But the serpent
surrounding the tree of knowledge is not truly an
ophidian, because, in contrast to waht is claimed
concerning the mythical animal, no snake is fed by

mitic (Gen 3:14).
dust (Gen 3:14). To identify what this 'serpent' is
really eating, it is necessary to refer to the other
meaning of 'afar, the term generally translated as
dust. In the Bible, the noun 'afar also designates
metallic ores.25
So if the serpent eats ore (and then
excretes slag), we may conclude that this animal is of
metallic nature and that he lives in a furnace. This is
confirmed by the noun designating the serpent in this
story, nahaš, which also means copper.
relevă faptul că descoperirea metalurgiei a transformat
că omul a descoperit puterea propriei sale inteligenţe,
In such a context of meaning, the sudden encounter
with the serpent in the Garden of Eden and its
consequences reveals that the discovery of metallurgy
radically transformed the human condition. This
interpretation finds a confirmation in the text: the man
discovered the power of his intelligence (Gen 3:7)29
and the divine beings acknowledged that "the man is
become as one of us" (Gen 3:22).
This reading reveals that the most fundamental myth
of the Bible is therefore related to the discovery of
metallurgy and the change in mind stimulated: some
of the demiurgic powers previously exclusively
reserved to the domain of gods are now mastered by
mankind.
Through metallurgy, mankind discovers his own
capacity to interfere with his milieu, independently of
the traditional requests and limitations laid down by
the gods.30
Cain the smelter: Cain is the firstborn of mankind,
engendered immediately after the expulsion from the
Garden of Eden. He is generally remembered as the
murderer of Abel, a crime interpreted as the
expression of the struggle, at the earliest stages of
civilization, between sedentary agriculturists and
nomadic breeders. However, a complex reality is
hidden behind this "official" interpretation. This is
revealed by the name Cain, which in Biblical Hebrew
means the metalworker (and probably more
specifically the smelter).31
Since metalworking, and
especially smelting, was a specialized craft in
Antiquity, we may guess that the conflict between Cain

In Biblical Hebrew, the adjective 'arum means not only nude, but also intelligent. This is exactly the meaning of 'arum
in Gen 3:1, when it is said that "the serpent was more subtle ('arum) than any beast of the field" 30
A similar story is encountered in the Greek mythology, where the forbidden transfer to the earth of the divine fire
(= metallurgy) by Prometheus is followed by rebellion against the gods and 'punishment' of mankind via the creation of

probabil expresia apropierii privilegiate a metalurgilor
de YHWH. Cain este, de asemenea, considerat ca fiind
primul om care înfiinţează un oraş (Geneză 4:17),
primul erou biblic civilizator.
and Abel should not be considered in its literal
meaning. It rather accounts for the strict interdiction
of the metalworkers to cultivate the land, a feature
explicitly mentioned in Jer 35:7.
Linking the birth of Cain to the 'knowledge' of YHWH
(Gen 4:1) suggests that metallurgy is deeply involved
in the 'discovery' of the god. This feature agrees with
the claim that YHWH is actively involved in
metalworking (see above), so that he may be revealed
through this activity. The divine protection of Cain
YHWH (Gen 4:15), which is even extended forever
to his descendants (Gen 4:23-24), is probably an
expression of this privileged closeness of the metal-
workers to YHWH. Cain is also related as the first
man founding a city (Gen 4:17), a feature
transforming him into the first Biblical civilizing hero.
Here again, this characteristic fits perfectly the
widespread function of patron of the earliest cities
devoted to the smith god in the Ancient Near East.
The outstanding status of Cain (and his lineage) is not
directly related to the production of metallic tools. The
making of utilitarian artifacts is evoked only a few
generations later, with the birth of Tubal-Cain (Gen
4:22). This means that metallurgy is not an activity
appreciated here for production of efficient tools. It
seems, rather, that metallurgy per se, the production
of metals from ore in a furnace, is the important
feature leading to the emergence of the new cultural
horizon.
These two myths of origin reveal that metallurgy is
approached in the Bible as the most fundamental
event both in time transforming the metalworker in a
civilizing hero and specifically promoting the
discovery of YHWH.
4. TEMPLUL DIN IERUSALIM,
UN CUPTOR SIMBOLIC
4. THE JERUSALEM TEMPLE
AS A SYMBOLIC FURNACE
Metalul era considerat un element preţios în
Antichitate.
alte date.
Metal was a precious matter in Antiquity. For this
reason, the presence of metals in temples is generally
interpreted as a way to praise the gods by magnifying
their shrines. It is therefore tempting, in this context,
to interpret the outstanding amounts of gold, silver
and copper found in the temple of Jerusalem as a way
to magnify the cult of YHWH and to express the wealth
he provides to "his" people. However, an indication
invites us to reconsider this view. In the book of
Isaiah, YHWH evokes the king of Assur as follows:
"his rock shall pass away by reason of terror, and his
princes shall be dismayed at the ensign, says YHWH,
whose fire is in Zion, and His furnace in Jerusalem"
(Isa 31:9). This oracle suggests that the temple of
Jerusalem was symbolically identified as a furnace.
This view is supported by the perpetual fire burning at
the temple, and by further evidences.
Dimensiunea culturală a metalurgiei: cazul vechiului Israel
69
Simbolul cazanului: Numeroasele bazine de cupru şi
”marea de cupru” prezentă în temple (1 Regi 7:23-39)
era legată aparent de simbolismul cuptorului. Aceasta
starea lichidă a materiei.32
Dimensiunea metalurgică a
(vezi Ieremia 52:21-23; 1 Regi 7:13-22) erau evident
impresionante.
urmare nume specifice (Yakhin and Boaz pentru
The cauldron symbolism: The many copper basins
and the "sea of copper" present in the temple (1Kgs
7:23-39) were apparently related to furnace
symbolism. This is suggested first of all by their
homology with copper cauldrons, the cultic artifacts
intimately related to fire and to the liquid state of
matter.34
This meta-llurgic dimension of the copper
basins of the temple is explicitly revealed when Ezekiel
represents the temple as an immense copper cauldron
in which a complete re-melting of matter is operated
(Ezek 24:3-14).
The giant copper columns: Two columns of copper
were positioned at the entrance of the Jerusalem
temple. These artifacts of more than ten meters in
height (see Jer 52:21-23; 1Kgs 7:13-22) were
obviously extremely impressive. Being disconnected
from the edifice, these columns did not support any
part of the roof, and they did not contribute to its
stability. These columns were specifically named
(Yakhin and Boaz for the right and left columns
respectively, see 1Kgs 7:21), a feature suggesting that
their presence was fully integrated in the cult
performed at Jerusalem.
Devoid of any architectural function, these two giant
pillars of 59 tons of copper each35
stressed first of all
the central importance of copper in the cult of YHWH.
By their size, massive shape and weight, these two
immense columns evoked first of all copper as raw
material. This suggests that they symbolized two
immense ingots of copper at the entrance of the
temple. Consequently, they reflect the result of a
smelting operation occurring within the edifice
characterized by the constant presence of fire and
intense smoke. This invites to identify the temple as a
furnace, the site of copper production, rather than a
smith's workshop.
The copper serpent: A copper artifact of serpentine
form, termed Nehushtan, was present within the
temple. We know about its existence because King
Hezekiah excluded it from the cult of YHWH (2Kgs
18:4). However, it is in no way specified there that this
copper serpent made by Moses was a 'foreign deity'. It
is neither mentioned that the burning of incense to the
Nehushtan by the Israelites was an idolatrous
practice. So we have to conclude that the book of
Kings evokes here a worship of YHWH through
the copper serpent. In Canaan, such a cult involving
a copper serpent was apparently deeply related to
metallurgy. This is revealed by the discovery of a
copper serpent in the shrine located within the copper
mining area of Timna (about 13-12th century BCE).

cult YHWH.
These observations confirm that the metals were not
only introduced in the Jerusalem temple for esthetical
purposes, but rather as essential components of the
cult of YHWH.
5. SFERA DIVINĂ ŞI METALURGIA 5. DIVINE DOMAIN AND METALLURGY
Anumite elemen-
câmpiile Edomului, pământul s-a cutremurat,
Shrines were regarded in Antiquity as sites where the
terrestrial and celestial universes interrelated. This is
why the shrine devoted to a deity was conceived in
close relation with his celestial domain. So if the
Jerusalem temple was likened to a furnace, we may
assume, by extension, that both the terrestrial
dominion of YHWH and his celestial universe were
conceived in a similar fashion. Some elements support
this assumption.
The god of mining areas: We learn in the song of
Deborah that YHWH originates from the region of
Seir: "YHWH, when you did go forth out of Seir,
when you did march out of the field of Edom" (Judg
5:4). This mountainous area is located south of the
Dead Sea, at the vicinity of the copper mining area of
Punon (the Arabah valley) characterized by an intense
metallurgical activity during Antiquity.39
Since no
other economic activity characterizes this desert
region, it is likely that the mention of YHWH coming
from Seir was a clear indication of his dwelling in
areas of mining and copper smelting. This conclusion
is supported by the vision of Zechariah evoking
YHWH coming from mountains of copper (Zech 6:1).
This affinity of YHWH with mining areas is confirmed
in the Deuteronomy by the mention of the land of the
Israelites as "a land whose stones are iron, and out
of whose hills you may dig copper" (Deut 8:9). This
mention of the Promised Land as a giant mining area
is imaginary, because neither iron nor copper ore
were substantially extracted from it at any time. This
means that this description is motivated by theological
rather than realistic considerations: assuming that
YHWH dwells among the Israelites implies that their
land has to be considered as a giant mining area.
The volcanic theophany: The most famous theophany
of YHWH in the Bible is undoubtedly his revelation at
Sinai. This event is explicitly identified as a volcanic
eruption by the smoke of the mountain, earthquakes,
intense fire at the crater and strong noises generated
by gas release (Ex. 19:16-19).42

period (see Levy and Najjar, 2006), so that it may hardly have been ignored by the Biblical authors. 42

Dimensiunea culturală a metalurgiei: cazul vechiului Israel
71
Te! Atinge munţii, ca să fumege!" (Psalmul 144:5).
The realism of this volcanic description contrasts with
the total absence of active volcanoes in Sinai, Canaan
and Egypt at the historical period. This means that the
volcanic representation of the revelation of YHWH at
Sinai reflects first of all the existence of a theological
link between YHWH and volcanism. This is confirmed
by the many mentions of the inevitable melting of
mountains induced by the "coming" of YHWH: "He
touches the mountains, and they smoke" (Ps.
104:32).43
This essential link is confirmed by the
psalmist calling YHWH to come down to melt the
mountains: "YHWH, bow Your heavens, and come
down; touch the mountains, that they may smoke" (Ps 144:5).
In Antiquity, volcanism was specifically related to the
gods of metallurgy. Hephaestus, the Greek smith god,
is called the prince of the Etna, and the volcanoes
were designated at Rome by the name of the smith-
god, Volcanus. Such an essential link is easily
understandable: metallurgy is the single human
activity leading to the melting of stone (the ore), and
its transformation into something very similar to lava
(the slag).44
So if YHWH manifests his presence
through the melting of mountains (volcanic eruption),
we may conclude, here again, that he is specifically
related to the smelting of ore in a furnace.
The celestial furnace: The book of Daniel reports a
vision of the celestial throne positioned upon a flow
of fire (Dan 7:10). This description clearly points to
theflow of slag emanating from an open furnace, such
as those in activity in the Near East at the first
millennium BCE. It suggests, therefore, that the
celestial domain of YHWH was represented as a
furnace. This assumption is supported by the Ezekiel's
vision evoking the celestial universe as a domain of
intense fire and burning coals (Ezek 1: 4, 13), upon
which is positioned the throne of YHWH. This point is
confirmed by the vision of a divine being throwing
these celestial coals on the city of Jerusalem in order
to destroy it (Ezek 10:2). In other visions, these celes-
tial coals are associated with burning sulfide ore
(gofrit) 47
, a feature revealing, here again, the meta-
llurgical character of this firing reality. This meta-
llurgical interpretation of the celestial domain is con-
firmed by the description, among the burning coals, of
what Ezekiel calls hašmal (Ezek 1:4, 27). This term
was generally used to designate copper-silver alloys
characterized by their pale yellow color.48

We may doubt, however, that such an alloy, being
surrounded by burning coals producing intense heat,
may be in a solid state. Rather, it seems that Ezekiel
describes here metal in liquid state through the pale-
yellow color radiating from it. Here again, this
confirms that the celestial domain of YHWH was
represented as a giant furnace where metal was
continuously reduced.
6. CONCLUZII 6. CONCLUSIONS
This overview provides enough information to assume
the existence of a deep metallurgical background to
the cult of YHWH.50
It also suggests that the Ancient
Israelite religion emerged as an extension, to an entire
people, of beliefs previously reserved to the guild of
Canaanite metalworkers. So we may confidently
assume that, through the Bible, the cultural dimension
of metallurgy is one of the main fundaments that has
fashioned our universe of values and beliefs. This
conclusion invites us to ask why this reality is largely
ignored today. Three answers may be suggested.
2. Motivaţia din Antichitatea tîrzie: Statutul
prelucrătorilor de metale s-a depreciat continuu în
timpul primului mileniu î.H. Din eroul civilizator,
metalurgul a devenit meşteşugarul servil din epoca
elenistică şi romană. Această degradare este
1. The early Israelite motivation: Though many
elements reveal the metallurgical fundaments of
Yahwism, this reality is never explicitly claimed in
the Bible. Parallel to this, the cult of YHWH prior
to the rise of Israel is never explicitly detailed.
This silence is easily understandable as soon as
the Israelite religion is approached as a religious
reform. It represents not only an extension of
the ancient cult reserved to metalworkers, but also
its replacement. This substitution is explicitly
revealed by the story of the transfer of primo-
geniture rights from Esau, the father of the
Edomites (the people of metalworkers dwelling in
the mining area of Seir) to Jacob, the father of
Israel. By the dramatic way this event is related in
Genesis 27, we may conclude that the transfer of
'religious authority' from the Edomites to Israel
occurred far from peacefully. This is probably an
important motivation for silencing as much as
possible the metallurgical background of the
Israelite religion, the latter being a reminder of
the conflicting reform the Israelites promoted.
2. The late Antiquity motivation: The status of
metalworkers became progressively depreciated
during the first millennium BCE. From civilizing
hero, they became no more than servile craftsmen
during the Hellenistic and Roman periods. This

This meaning is deduced from the translation of hašmal as elektron by the Septuagint, and by the designation of such an
alloy as hšmn (egyptian), ešmaru (akkadian) and išmalu (elamite). See Bodi, The Book of Ezekiel, pp. 82-90. 49
Amzallag (2009). 50
Further evidences towards the metallurgical background of the cult of YHWH are exposed in Amzallag (2009).

privind originea metalurgică a yehovismului.
degradation is evoked in Greek mythology by the
tragic fate of Prometheus, the first smith and
civilizing hero later bound with iron chains on the
Caucasus. It is also reflected by the relatively low
status of the smith in the Greek society at the
Classical period. Aristotle reveals this opinion
when he claims: "Nay, in ancient times, and
among some city-states the artisan class were
slaves or foreigners, and therefore the majority
of them are so now. The best form of state will
not admit them to citizenship".54
A similar
opinion is also held among the Jews at about the
same time. This is explicitly revealed by Ben
Sirah, evoking the artisans as being exclusively
busy with their own craft: "All these rely upon
their hands, and each is skilful in his own work.
Without them a city cannot be established, and
men can neither sojourn nor live there. Yet they
are not sought out for the council of the people,
nor do they attain eminence in the public
assembly. They do not sit in the judge's seat, nor
do they understand the sentence of judgment;
they cannot expound discipline or judgment, and
they are not found using proverbs. But they will
maintain the state of the world, and all their
desire is in the work of their craft" (Sir 38: 31-
34). In such a context, it became inopportune to
associate YHWH, acknowledged as the supreme
master of the Universe, with an activity reduced
to the rank of a technique. This is why the
prestigious status of the god of Israel required
disconnecting him as much as possible from his
metallurgical roots.
3. The rise of modernity: The outstanding status of
the smith has survived centuries of depreciation
during the Hellenistic and Roman periods. This is
attested by the religious functions of the smith
in Medieval Europe (see above). Furthermore,
many Biblical exegetes yet considered YHWH as
the divine metalworker at the first millennium
CE.55
YHWH was also explicitly acknowledged as
the god patronizing alchemy and specifically
involved in the metallic transformations operated
in the attanore, the alchemical furnace.56
All these
last traces of the metallurgical roots of Yahwism
disappeared with modernity. At a time the

mysteries relative to metallurgy became totally
denied, the association of YHWH with metallurgy
became meaningless, and even a non-sense. This
is the time metallurgy became disconnected from
its prestigious past, and replaced by a series of
'narratives' supporting the modern universe of
beliefs.
