Ladies Page Mexican-style baked potatoes with mince and avocado INGREDIENTS 4 large (1kg) coliban or desiree washed potatoes 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 onion, finely chopped 1 garlic glove, finely chopped 500g chicken mince 420g can Mexican chilli beans in tomato sauce 1 tablespoon tomato paste 1 tablespoon tomato sauce 2 jalapeno chillies in vinegar (finely sliced) 1 tablespoon chutney 2 teaspoon lime juice salt 1 avocado, diced 2 tablespoons light sour cream METHOD
Preheat oven to 190°C. Line tray with non-stick baking paper. Pierce skin of potatoes in several places. Place potatoes on tray. Bake in oven for 1 hour or until tender. Meanwhile, heat oil in a non-stick frying pan over medium heat. Add onion and garlic. Cook for 3 minutes or until soft. Add mince. Cook, stirring with a wooden spoon to break up mince, for 6 minutes or until browned. Add beans, tomato paste, 80ml water, tomato sauce, chillies, chutney and lime juice.
Cook, stirring for 5 minutes or until sauce thickens. Season with salt. Remove potatoes from oven and cut a 5cm-deep cross into each. Push sides open to hold filling. Place potatoes onto plates. Fill with mince-bean mixture and top with avocado and a dollop of sour cream.
~BANOFFEE ICE CREAM PIE~ serves 8 * 220g/8oz milk chocolate * 600ml/20 fl.oz cream, chilled * 400ml/14oz tin Caramel Top n Fill (dulce de leche) * 3 bananas Melt 150g/5oz of the chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl, in the microwave, in 30-second increments, stirring after each until smooth. Line a 20-cm springform cake tin with cling wrap. Pour the chocolate into the base of the tin, smooth with a spoon and place in the freezer. In a large bowl, beat 300ml of cream just until soft peaks form. Add the Top n Fill and mix to combine. Pour half the caramel mixture over the chocolate base and return to the freezer for 2 hours. Cover remaining caramel with cling wrap and refrigerate. Once caramel layer is nice and firm, remove from freezer, cut the bananas into 2-cm chunks and place over the top. Melt another 60g of chocolate in the microwave until smooth. Add 50ml of cream and mix to make a chocolate sauce. Drizzle this sauce over the banana layer. Sit for 2 minutes, then top with the remaining

caramel. Smooth the top once again. Return to the freezer to completely set, at least 2 hours. Before serving whip the remaining 250ml of cream and smooth over the top of the ice-cream cake. Decorate by grating the remaining chocolate over the top. Optional: For THE MOST DELICIOUS Caramel Ice-cream see page 92, simply beat 300ml thickened cream just until soft peaks start to form. Mix in 400g can of Caramel Top n Fill until well combined. Pour into a paper lined 23 x 13-cm loaf tin, cover with cling wrap and freeze overnight.
Brief History of the VW Transporter (Kombi Bus)
1949 Prototype "Plattenwagen" or "Flat Car"
First Generation Transporters (1950-1967) After the War in 1944, the Wolfsburg factory needed to move supplies, parts and
tools around the slowly rebuilding factory, so he engineered the first Plattenwagen ('flat-car'). It was a flatbed truck based on a beetle chassis, built from available VW parts. It had a ladder frame with Beetle axles, a front flat carry bed and an open cab above the rear VW flat-four engine. It proved a very useful addition to the factory, and soon there were dozens moving about the factory. Improved versions were subsequently made to the same basic flat-bed design, but with more powerful VW engines and enclosed cabs with modern seats and headrests. Utilising parts from the Kubelwagon, Ben Pon came up with the idea of moving the cab forward and covering the flatbed over. The first prototype for the now world famous VW camper was born and the Transporters went into production in November 1949. During a press conference on 12 November 1949, Heinz Nordoff, chief executive of Volkswagen, presented the world with the first Volkswagen Transporter. With it's engine in the rear and passengers placed up front over the axle, the payload was perfectly balanced between the axles.
Prototype Transporter Initial tests on the new vehicle came to a halt. As the floorpan could not with stand the stress of the new bodywork. A new prototype was hastily built but with unitary construction. The body and chassis were welded together and strengthened with an additional subframe. Better brakes were added and the rounded shape of the front panel reduced fuel consumption.
Mechanically, the transporter was basically the same as the beetle up to 1970, sharing many sets of parts, which kept costs down. Below is an early panelvan with side opening doors for access to the huge loadspace.
The kombi was launched in May 1950, coming with side windows and
Cowra Crankhandle Page 5
removable seats. It was closely followed by the VW Micro Bus in June 1950 which boasted more creature comforts, better trim and many other passenger improvements - see pic below. 1950 VW Kombi The Samba Microbus (below) was released in April 1951, designed to carry up to nine people and had a full-
length canvas sun roof.
VW Samba Microbus The VW pickup truck was launched in 1952 and became very popular in the construction industry. It was hardy and reliable, and simple to service and
maintain (below). The crew cab model which was added to the range in 1958. VW Pickup Truck
A late addition to the range, a High-roof van was launched in 1962 and proved to be popular with the rag trade as garment rails could be fitted in the load area. The side loading doors had to be enlarged to accommodate the higher roof line - see diagram and pic below.
VW High Roof Van
The top of the range Microbus had a full width dashboard while all other models up to 1955 had a separate speedometer behind the steering wheel. You can see the difference below.

Second Generation Transporters (1967-1979) Known as Bay Window Transporters. VW launched the successful Bay Window Transporter series in August 1967. A sliding side door and step were added to facilitate entry to the vehicle. The air intakes were moved to the front panel, the indicators were
moved below the headlamps, the bumpers were strengthened and the one piece windshield offered better forward and all-round vision - see pic below. Bay Window Transporter Designed with safety and comfort in mind, the Bay Window interior and dashboard
made more use of soft plastic and bigger, more comfortable seats - see pic below. Bay Window Transporter Dashboard VW Fleetline In 1975 the VW Fleetline was released in South Africa as a budget alternative to the German models. It was only in production for a year and was manufactured in Brazil, comprised of parts from both older and newer versions of the transporter. Read more about the Fleetline.
1975 VW Fleetline The End of an Era The end of an era came when the classical rounded buses were phased out in 1979
and replaced with the newer, squarer Microbus shape (and Caravelle), the Third Generation Transporters.
Third Generation Transporter Caravelle
South and Central American Production After production stopped in Germany, Mexico continued to
produce buses from 1980 until 1990. They produced two commercials (panelvan and flatbed) and the family transporter combi. Mexico Range 1980 - 1990 Volkswagen Brazil continued to manufacture the Transporter from 1991 until 2005. They produced the panel van and the family version with windows - see pics below.

Current Production A UK company called Danbury Motorcaravans currently produces brand new VW Transporter Panelvans, Kombis and customised Camper Vans from their factory in Yate.
Pic-A-Park Run 1st November
Very pleasant night with varied subjects spoken about, Everything from the slow mail, Tasmania, Plants and birds and many other subjects. My tea was a little cold as I had a prospective new member wishing to join the club on the phone. As it got darker the mosquitoes got more active, very active so it was decided to call it a night. Classic Yass 5th November
This event is one of the best organised and most interesting car shows in NSW. There are vehicles there to cover everybody’s taste, some amazing cars and some totally unrestored and as found. Rough and ready, but still with a certain magic appeal. I have sung the praises of this event for years and as Charlie commented on Facebook, it is one of the highlighted events of the year, every year some new cars, now with the added interest of modified vehicles, Hot Rods and post 1970 vehicles filling a separate area across the road. Street stalls, model cars and some Swap Meet like stalls. If you don’t like cars, the shopping centre is a short walk through a covered walkway paste the Yass library. Next to the library in a large room, some specialists had their items on display, the men’s shed was sensational and very friendly, other collections included a full set of Mamod Steam Engines
Cowra Crankhandle Page 8
Then there is the billy-cart Derby, enough to keep you occupied for hours, some hilarious, some very, very serious. Also some fantastic built carts, some modern and others as original made of all timber for the chassis and steering. Like a fair few club events, I have no understanding of why there aren’t more members attending; this is one of my major highlights of the year. Last couple of years attended on my own as Kathy was working, still enjoyed Classic Yass, very unusual for me to go on a run without Kathy. Yes, it is a long way, particularly in an older car, but as with all our club runs, everyone drives at the speed of the slowest car, that is why the slowest car must always lead the way. While I am at this point – remember to keep the car behind in your rear view mirror. If the car disappears it either means the group is driving too fast or they have broken down. If everyone followed this recommendation the whole group would stop, even it is the last car dropped off. This time Charlie led off and the rest chatted for a couple of minutes before leaving. Finally caught up with the Vanguard approx. 20 k’s out of Boorowa. When we caught up it was clear that Charlie was only 2 to 3 mile an hour slower than the rest, no wonder it took so long to catch up. It was a great drive down and back home, just what the car needed. Rodney and Larry stayed overnight to participate in the rest of the events on Sunday. Please keep this in mind for next year, it REALLY is worth a visit. Saturday Mystery Run 22-10-2016
If success can be gauged on fun, laughter and song this run had it all. On meeting at railway station it seemed that everyone was on the same wavelength. It was quickly decided Wyangala for the barby via Vic’s garage sale. It was great to finally meet Vic’s lovely wife. The clouds hung over on what threatened to be a possibly wet day as we wound our way around the bends of that great scenic road. On arrival we just sat and talked for quite a while before firing up the barby. A nice couple travelling through turned up and fitted in to the chatter real well. Once lunch was over the subject turned to music played on unusual everyday things. Ian made a dash for the toilet only to bring back several sheets of toilet paper, He, Joyce and Carmel then grabbed a hair comb and with the two everyday items combined broke into a great rendition of Goodnight Irene with John joining in on vocals. I have it on video for a possible later fun night we came up with. As we were about to leave another group turned up, a social club from down the coast. Again they were on for a good yack whilst admiring Ian’s sons FJ Ute. We went into the lookout before heading home, was great to see so much water in the dam. A very enjoyable day. Mystery Run Forbes. 13th November
I would have thought there might be a few more wanting to go to McFeeters Museum, but no just two cars from Cowra. WE met up with Brian & Janelle at Eugowra for morning tea. It was cool but very pleasant, such good company great conversations we sat and chatted for over an hour before just the two from Cowra headed to Forbes. Even though there was limited numbers it was a great day, fantastic drive, lots of laughs and the museum and hospitality at the museum just sensational. Street Stall 17th November
Heather supports the club in her own way, by organizing the annual Street Stall. Sadly Heather has not been well, so thanks to Jan & Carmel for taking over the street stall. Heather is improving in health but just not quite there to run the stall today. By the time we packed up at 1:30 pm there was virtually nothing left. Jan and Carmel were helped by Sharon, Russell & Leon.

Editor’s/Plates Notes Welcome to new members, Evan Dawe with a nice original XB Falcon 302, it was originally Evans fathers and has only done 138.000 kilometres. The other is Barry Parks with a very original WB Statesman, Barry is a Holden man, his garage is amazing with the makings of a HQ series Monaro Coupe, but an amazing “Smokey & the Bandit” Pontiac Firebird in amazing condition. Shed is surrounded by Commodores. Although runs have been talked about, written about in the Crankhandle, it seems there is an ongoing problem and discussion point. . Here are some key points.
1. 3 Run Rule – to encourage participation – not to discipline 2. Too many runs – tried many times to reduce and even implement one a month – there was no change 3. Saturday runs – for those who go to Church – no increase in numbers, if anything a decrease 4. Cut out Club meetings and Rego day as a run – even less participation 5. Club runs should be that (run with members together slowest car first and keep an eye in rear view mirror
for car behind) it has been proven to work, just hard to get members to watch car behind instead of keeping up with the car in front, just stay in front of one behind, there has been some thought and discussion that a member going to the same destination but not with other members not be considered as a club run.
6. How do we increase participation with the club? 7. Do we make it harder to do three runs and then Police it better? 8. Under the RMS Policy, it is the clubs that have the policing authority, all clubs. It is not the RMS or the
Police job. This was the reason the price of registration was kept low on club plates.
Of course there are exemptions i.e. Point 5. Swap Meetings exempt. Then there are numerous legitimate reasons, sick, car off road, family commitments, money, and many more. People won’t go if they believe they are being forced. I firmly believe that as the years pass the lifestyle changes and the busier everyone becomes. When the club started everyone had young families, and it was something the kids enjoyed as much as the adults. There was also no need for a destination; the drive was the most important. I don’t know the answer; I can just quote from experience within this club and friends in other clubs that I chat to about these problems often. All clubs seem to have the same or similar problems. There is a core of keen people, an outer ring of regulars, the occasional attendee and what I affectionately call the “Fringe Dwellers”. These fringe dwellers I understand as in most, if not all, their lifestyle prevents commitment to the club, so many things going on in their lives that the club is not high on their priority list. I do know that every possible conceivable idea to encourage participation has failed numerous times, tried again and again and still failed. Mid-week runs, Saturday runs or Sunday runs make no difference to participation, events that the organiser put on that you would think be well attended, aren’t. Runs that you think won’t be well attended are often the opposite, there really is no way of knowing what will or will not be successful. There is a video in the library of a very early observation run, with only 3 vehicles. The president at the time can be clearly heard in very colourful language questioning where everyone else was, what their excuse were and that they were missing a great and sensational fun run. What we have works to a point and is the envy of members from other clubs– it allows members to pick and choose what event they are able to attend. There are really no new ideas, even to the point of electing relatively new members to be President to try and create some new ideas, that so many times has failed and also caused a multitude of internal problems. Any other limitation put in place on the runs has resulted in even less participation. Not related, but there is the age old problem of verifying who was on a club run – Members on runs must be recorded, as close as possible to the event, that night if possible. As an example, it is very easy to leave someone out as is evident from runs that I have attended, if I don’t take a photo of the car it occasionally is left out of the Crankhandle and therefore left out of the Movement Diary if I don’t write the article, download pics on Facebook as soon as I get home. I plead with members that if I am not there on any event can you please email/phone who attended the run that night after the run. Sometimes I just get a list of names, which is not good enough because many have more than one car. It is some sadness that I wish to report the passing of Des George, Des was somewhat of a strange and unusual character, old school pilot as seen in World War 2 British movies. Des lost his mind many years ago after
Cowra Crankhandle Page 12
dropping his Jaguar at West Cowra Auto and forgot where and who he was, spending his remaining life in Moyne. Saddens me to report his family had the funeral without notification to anyone at all. The funeral was held on 11th November.
Bathurst Christmas Expo – Swap – Car Show 20th November
I was amazed at the numbers that DO NOT COMPLY with H plates. Reason is quite simple, they are unroadworthy. For any that think they are roadworthy, faults are simple, protrusion through bonnet, illegal diameter wheels 20 inch. Of course the other is the main H plate rule "as close as possible to original" The plates registrar for the club that has signed the 1259 form stating the vehicle is eligible has a lot to answer to the RMS.
Many clubs think that if the vehicle is over 30 years old it is eligible for H Plates, truth is to be eligible, the vehicle has to be as close as possible to original. Period accessories allowed. 20"wheels aren't period nor are holes in bonnets with air cleaner hanging out are not period or even roadworthy
The club display looked fantastic as you can see in photo. As usual there was controversy over the judging, some of the vehicles that won were in no way the best
in that category (opinion of many), there was a great deal of discussion about the choices overheard by me on my way to the toilet. Even got collared by an owner of a Pontiac, who was suitably disgusted, and it wasn't sour grapes on his part, his car was immaculate in comparison to the winning Dodge in the same category. Some didn't even comply with the category that they won. Even though it was listed as “People’s Choice” Vote there were concerns of who was voting as there were no instructions on voting, anybody could pick up a handful of voting cards. Congratulations to Charlie for yet another "Best European" trophy

There was noted by the club errors in the issuing of categories. It became very heated with the president stepping in and finishing the discussion. Prior to the finish there was some discussion and mention of the CAVC Facebook page not relaying clubs opinion? Which was more about the RMS H Plate non-compliant vehicles at the show with only the mention by Russell of an entrant’s complaint made to him? Even after the president stopped the conversation more heated discussion – end result if anyone wants to complain about the judging to do it on a personal basis, not as a representative of the CAVC
